We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761 March 15, 2020 From the Pastors Desk We have heard, many mes, this weekend’s Scripture recounng Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Here, something quite extraordinary is happening. Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink of water. In doing so, the Lord is inving her to an act of generosity. This simple invitaon not only awakens her gen- erosity but, in the end, brings her to a life changing encounter with Christ. This weekend, as we connue our Stewardship Renewal, we are focusing on the importance of offering God our sacrificial giſt of financial treasure. As the Lord sought to draw from the Samaritan woman her generous response to his invitaon for a drink of water, so the Lord also desires our generous re- sponse to His invitaon to be good and faithful stewards of the resources He has given to us. Whether we are quite well off financially or we are barely making it month to month, there is one thing in common. God desires that we offer Him the first fruits of our financial treasure. In fact, thing or offering our weekly/monthly sac- rificial giſt of treasure is an act of worship. At each Mass, as the collecon is taken up, we offer our sacrificial giſt of treas- ure as the giſts of bread and wine are brought to the altar to be transformed into the perfect offering of Christ’s Body and Blood. Jesus offered Himself completely and totally as He stretched out His arms and died for us on the Cross. The offering of our sacrificial giſt of treasure and the offering of our lives are united, in worship, to the perfect sacrificial offer- ing of Jesus Christ, which we parcipate in at each Eucharist. The offering of our financial giſt of treasure is an act of wor- ship in which we trust God with our finances. The offering or thing of our treasure is also a sacrificial giſt. We see in the Scriptures the story of the widow’s mite, one who gave her enre livelihood. When I have been asked to give at a level that I felt was a bit outside my comfort zone, I have been amazed at how much I have received in return. The blessings and graces that come our way when we give sacrificially are numerous. This weekend, I encourage each of us to prayerfully consider the amount of our financial treasure we the on a regular basis. Whether we offer our sacrificial giſt on a weekly or monthly basis is there room for a modest increase? Is our giſt a sacrifice that honors God and the many graces and bless- ings He has poured into our lives? As the Lord thirsted for the faith of the Samaritan woman at the well, Christ thirsts for our response, with grateful hearts, a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God. We, the parish of Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic Church, WELCOME all to CELEBRATE, TEACH and LIVE the Mission of JESUS CHRIST

Ss. Mary & Mathias Church 215 W. 8th St. Muscatine, IA 52761

March 15, 2020 From the Pastors Desk We have heard, many times, this weekend’s Scripture recounting Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. Here, something quite extraordinary is happening. Jesus asks the Samaritan woman for a drink of water. In doing so, the Lord is inviting her to an act of

generosity. This simple invitation not only awakens her gen-erosity but, in the end, brings her to a life changing encounter with Christ.

This weekend, as we continue our Stewardship Renewal, we are focusing on the importance of offering God our sacrificial gift of financial treasure. As the Lord sought to draw from the Samaritan woman her generous response to his invitation for a drink of water, so the Lord also desires our generous re-sponse to His invitation to be good and faithful stewards of the resources He has given to us.

Whether we are quite well off financially or we are barely making it month to month, there is one thing in common. God desires that we offer Him the first fruits of our financial treasure. In fact, tithing or offering our weekly/monthly sac-rificial gift of treasure is an act of worship. At each Mass, as the collection is taken up, we offer our sacrificial gift of treas-ure as the gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar to be transformed into the perfect offering of Christ’s Body and Blood. Jesus offered Himself completely and totally as He stretched out His arms and died for us on the Cross. The offering of our sacrificial gift of treasure and the offering of our lives are united, in worship, to the perfect sacrificial offer-ing of Jesus Christ, which we participate in at each Eucharist.

The offering of our financial gift of treasure is an act of wor-ship in which we trust God with our finances. The offering or tithing of our treasure is also a sacrificial gift. We see in the Scriptures the story of the widow’s mite, one who gave her entire livelihood. When I have been asked to give at a level that I felt was a bit outside my comfort zone, I have been amazed at how much I have received in return. The blessings and graces that come our way when we give sacrificially are numerous.

This weekend, I encourage each of us to prayerfully consider the amount of our financial treasure we tithe on a regular basis. Whether we offer our sacrificial gift on a weekly or monthly basis is there room for a modest increase? Is our gift a sacrifice that honors God and the many graces and bless-ings He has poured into our lives? As the Lord thirsted for the faith of the Samaritan woman at the well, Christ thirsts for our response, with grateful hearts, a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to God.

HOW MUCH DOES THE BIBLE SAY I SHOULD DONATE TO MY CHURCH? BY ANN NAFFZIGER AUGUST 26, 2013

The Old Testament contains a vast amount of material about giving a portion of one’s harvest, properties, or ownings back to God. Many commandments in the Old Testament mandate giving of one’s “first fruits” i.e. the first of the fruit or grain harvest, or the first of the newborn livestock. The Hebrew word for this offering is translated as “tithe” or “a tenth-part” with the emphasis being that the first fruits are intentionally offered.

The New Testament doesn’t adopt the language of tithing or mandate that a particu-lar percent be given for the support of a religious institution. That said, in Mark 12:41-44, Jesus praised a woman who put the equivalent of a penny into the Temple treas-ury (similar to the collection basket at churches today), but denounced someone else who gave a tenth of his income with a public show of self-righteous grandeur (Luke 18:9-14).

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops suggests we give a “planned, pro-portionate, and sacrificial” amount, yet like the New Testament does not tell us what percentage of our income that should be. What is a clear biblical challenge is that we give of our “first fruits” rather than our “leftovers,” those one dollar bills that we sometimes slip into the collection basket on Sunday because we’ve already spent our paychecks. A more biblical approach to tithing would be to include our charitable giv-ing as a non-negotiable line item in our monthly budgets right along with food, utilities and rent.
