Singing is one of the most essential elements of worship. Short songs, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. It allows everyone to take part in a time of prayer together and to remain together in attentive waiting on God, without having to fix the length of time too exactly. To open the gates of trust in God, nothing can replace the beauty of human voices united in song. This beauty can give us a glimpse of "heaven’s joy on earth," as Eastern Christians put it. And an inner life begins to blossom within us. These songs also sustain personal prayer. Through them – little by little – our being finds an inner unity in God. They can continue in the silence of our hearts when we are at work, speaking with others or resting. (They are infinitely more centering than the typical tunes I introduce to parishioners, like the Twins’ baseball victory song.) In this way, prayer and daily life are united. They allow us to keep on praying even when we are unaware of it, in the silence of our hearts. Taizé prayer is led by instrumentals, but it is sung by the congregation-as-choir. The person who begins the songs is generally up front, together with those who will read the psalms, the reading and the intercessions, not facing the others but turned like them towards the altar. Parish Reconciliation Service: Wednesday, April 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Guardian Angels Church. Come at least for the meditative singing and instrumental music, and the quiet in between. SCHOOL NEWS

!F.2GFH&IE&!GF&JFFKMelissa Miller graduated in 1998 from the College of St. Benedict. One month after graduation, she was offered a long term sub position at Chaska Middle School East where she taught science and language arts. Shortly after that assignment, Mrs. Miller was offered a full-time position at St. Raphael’s School in Crystal teaching 4th and 5th grade science and language arts, taught piano lessons and was co-leader of the after school program. She met her future husband, Mike, and moved to

New Germany and, desiring a shorter commute, found a position closer to her home. She was hired at Guardian Angels to teach Middle School Science. During her four years in Middle School, Mrs. Miller also had the opportunity to teach Religion, Geography, and Language Arts. Last year, she moved to fifth grade, her present position. Mrs. Miller enjoys working with children and is excited to be teaching at GA! She states “I have had a really positive experience here and look forward to the years ahead! I thank those of you who have given me the opportunity to teach your children! I am not only a teacher at GA, but my husband and I are also GA parents! Our daughter is 4 years old and currently attends preschool. We also have twin boys that are 1 !. We have had a fantastic first experience with school! Our decision to send our daughter to GA has been a true blessing!”

Bring on SPRING! HALOS Guardian Angels Middle School Youth Ministry Saturday, March 19, 2011 - 1– 3:30pm GA School Gym

As we all anxiously await the arrival of both Spring Break and Spring why not come to the school gym for some fun outdoor challenges indoors! Not to worry, if you aren’t interested in outdoor activities, we have something for you too—one room will have Spring themed crafts that we will be delivering to parishioners and another room will have a Wii “Just Dance” competition! Something for everyone! Bring your friends and enjoy an afternoon filled with activities that will help us Bring on Spring! There is no cost for this event.

The sacrament season is in full swing at GA! Our second year confirmation students will be confirmed on April 9th, our RCIA candidates will be fully initiated in the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, and our first sacrament students will receive first communion on April 30th/May 1st. The RCIA candidates are going to the Basilica this weekend to celebrate the Rite of Enrollment with hundreds of other RCIA candidates in our archdiocese. Please continue to pray for all of these individuals and their families as they grow deeper in their faith and come closer to the reception of their sacraments!

Catechists of the Week We are blessed with four amazing 10th grade catechists! Barb Gebhart, Julie and Randy Eiden, and Robin Techam have joined their gifts and talents to foster the spiritual growth of our tenth grade faith formation students. Each of these four catechists come with a years of experience and passion for sharing the faith. They are all have had other children in our programs and now are helping the last of their children going through Faith Formation at GA! This is their second year working with this group of students and they have been able to find lessons, activities, and prayerful experiences that the students can learn and grow from. This group of students will be confirmed in less than a month and they have not slowed the learning down one bit, they are currently working on leading grades 1-9 in the Stations of the Cross using back lighting to create shadows. Please join us in praying for the continued success of Barb, Julie, Randy, and Robin’s 10th grade faith formation class!

THANK YOU! To Kenny & Theresa Fahey for their donation to the school!

Words cannot express everything that is in our heart to say a HUGE "THANK YOU" to everyone who helped with Sue Cisewski's Benefit on March 6. Thank you to those who made donations, volunteered, set up, took down, cleaned up, served, bid on the auction items, ate the dinner ... the list goes on. How can one say what we feel in our hearts for all of you... we explode with gratitude! Sue & Al and their family are soooooo grateful for everything. The out-pouring of love and help from the setting-up to the taking down was incredible. The Benefit was a huge success, not just monetarily, but mostly for Sue to see all this support really lifted her spirits. May we as a Marriage Encounter Ministry, Guardian Angels Community AND the larger community which includes all our friends, family & neighbors continue to care for one another as Christ has taught us.

The Sue Cisewski Benefit Coordinating Team

I’m always intrigued when a parishioner or a Catholic at another parish confides in me:

“No offense, Father …”

(When I hear this, I know something interesting is coming, and I sort of brace myself.)

“… but pastors come and go. Again, no offense, but a parish really isn’t a pastor’s parish. It’s the parishioners’ parish.”

When I hear this, I smile “… in addition to being Jesus’, of course.”

I secretly take great delight at what I think was intended as a shocking revelation. After all, it has been a consistent theme of mine over the past several years.

When religious order members and diocesan priests stuffed rectories, friaries and priories, they did absolutely everything. Parishioners were expected to simply pay, pray and obey. Times have certainly changed. The priest-and-sister shortage has emptied out rectories, convents, etc. Thanks be to God, parishioners are stepping up to fill in the ministry vacuum.

More than fill in the vacuum, really! For no one is better positioned to evangelize by inviting and welcoming prospective parishioners than current parishioners! Without a doubt, this has been the story of G.A., and huge factor in why we’ve doubled in membership.

The greatest honor parishioners could ever pay me is to continue to take this parish to the next level. Even greater things are in the parishioners’ community’s future. What follows is another transition update. I am committed to making this transition as smooth and productive as possible. ~ Fr. Paul

Helping with the transition, and increasing the appeal of this parish for prospective pastors, is our parish’s adoption of a plan long in planning: the new Parishioner Leadership Structure, which taps deeper and more broadly into our parishioner community, engaging them more and more in their parish.

The overview on March 5 and 7 cleared up what is meant by leadership. Some parishioners may be confused by the term, perhaps equating leadership with obvious power and title.

By virtue of our baptisms: Doers are servant-leaders … visionaries are servant-leaders … council members are servant-

leaders … the folks who welcome people at the church are servant-leaders … quilters are servant-leaders … pastoral care ministers are servant-leaders … etc.

Every disciple is called to be a servant-leader.

This new leadership structure simply builds on the progress made to date in parishioners/stakeholders taking ownership of

their parish and its ministries.

I understand that an unprecedented 85 pastoral reassignments will be made in the Archdiocese for this late spring/early summer. So there will be a lot of transition throughout the Archdiocese, not just here at G.A.

There will be an unusually large pool of pastors from which to select, which is great for G.A.

The Comprehensive Assignment Board’s next meeting was this past Tuesday. At that time, a member was to be assigned to come out to G.A. to interview parishioner leadership. Because of the sheer number of pastoral assignments to be made, this visit may not happen right away this month. The assignment board is aiming to make appointments by April.

Should projects be put on hold during the transition? Let me respond this way: Does the work of Jesus Christ ever stop? Does a finance council and parish council shut down during a transition? Do Masses cease? Absolutely not! If a project was worthwhile and parishioner-led twelve months ago, nine months ago, three months ago … it is worthwhile today and tomorrow.

I would even say that, during a transition, projects that improve and move forward our parish are all the more important. Priests coming out of the seminary nowadays truly appreciate parishes moving forward, parishioners assuming ownership of their parishes. If only because parishes standing still or moving backwards mean all the more work for them. There is also the spirit of the Second Vatican Council that calls for this parishioner engagement in a parish.

Some wonder why my reassignment announcement was made when it was. Aside from taking advantage of the regular assignment cycle, and drawing upon the largest pool of available pastors in recent memory, the announcement’s timing was dictated by the Archbishop.

When will I know what my new assignment will be? I believe it will be in April. I believe it will take place in mid- to late-June, when all new assignments will take place. As for what or where it will be, I do not know. I’ve asked to be assigned closer to my parents. I do not know if I will be a pastor, an assistant pastor, a chaplain, etc.

The 2011 Catholic Services Appeal is more than just another collection. It is the way by which every Catholic shares in the work of our Archdiocese and the mission of the Church. Our work is in preparing seminarians to be priests and deacons, faith formation and education programs in our parishes, providing Catholic Schools for our children, and in collaboration with Catholic charities, we feed and minister to the poor. Please give generously.

Angels ChoirThe Angels Choir (for 3rd through 8th graders, whether they be from Guardian Angels School, other schools, or home-schooled) will be leading the singing for the March 19th 5pm Mass. Rehearsal is the same day at 3:30pm in the choir loft. Please RSVP to Teresa Schmidt (Director of Worship) at 952/361-0181 or [email protected].

During our parish’s 150th anniversary two years back, the Parish Community Council renamed our church’s chapel, sandwiched between the sacristy and the sanctuary, the Fr. Ravoux Chapel.

Originally, the Ravoux Chapel was less of a chapel and more of a gathering for Franciscans for Mass. The chapel’s doors to the sanctuary would be opened, and the Franciscan friars would have the best view in the church of the High Altar, where Mass was originally celebrated.

For a brief period of time, daily Mass had been celebrated in the Ravoux Chapel. But far too many people now come to daily Mass, and so it was moved to the larger church.

Soon, the framed photographs of our community’s two founders will be placed on the chapel’s north wall, on the Friary Garden side. The photos are of Monsignor Augustin Ravoux, founder of the mission church (1842) and Fr. Bruno Riss, O.S.B., founder of the parish church (1858).

Thanks to Dale Gilles’s creative woodworking talents, we have a new reserve-tabernacle pedestal, donated earlier in the memory of Joe Lano. Replacing the altar with the pedestal has really opened up the chapel. Mary Meyer is working on a special altar cloth for the ledge under the painting of El Senor de los Milagros / the Lord of Miracles. You should check out our parish’s only chapel.

Individual confessions are still held in the Ravoux Chapel at 4 pm on Sundays. But the chapel is a wonderful place to pray in silence before and after Masses. To get to the Ravoux Chapel, simply go through the door leading to the sacristy … the same sacristy door parishioners use to get to the restroom near the sacristy.
