BOXInGWhat could be one o the worst nightmares that a guy could everexperience?? You get into a boxing match with the missus andshe cleans your clock. Yes you heard right!! Now mind youit was only on a V screen using our new video game system, but still it was pretty pain ul!! No not my body, just my ego.Now these games are not per ect (obviously) but their ability totranslate your body movements and put it all on the V is truly remarkable. So ... hiding the embarrassment o my boxing de eat, we movedon to table tennis. Once upon a time I was a airly experiencedtable tennis player, but that experience ailed me as I wentdown to urther de eat and humiliation. But, with my neversay die personality, I went about practicing my table tenniswith renewed vigour. I moved up rom beginner to amateur

to pro essional and rom there demanded a rematch with themissus. Victory!!!!! Not even close, I won each game!!!Just as in li e, success usually takes a lot o practice. But succe

isnt just doing the same things over and over again. o truly develop new skills you have to experiment and try new ideas. What happens when I do this and i I change this what happens??E ective practice isnt so much about simply doing or playing, itis also about learning and adapting.

For instance, one o the things that I have learned is to neverchallenge the missus to a game until I have achieved some reallevel o skill at it or even better, nd a sneaky way to win withoutskill. I am thinking that i I can convince Xbox to get a betterhandle on reality, the missus should be way too short to evergive me a head shot. Another thing I havent tried, is to see whatwould happen i I kick her real good. Against the rules, whoknows but could be worth a try.

Alternatively, I could adopt a moremature attitude towards losing. Youknow, Its not whether you win or losebut how you play the game. I coulddo that you know, but somehow it justdoesnt seem as appealing as trying tokick her butt. 800

Adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle is somethingmany people do selflessly in an effort to protect theenvironment and ensure that the generations tocome have a healthy planet at their disposal. Butthat same lifestyle can also pay instant dividends, helping homeowners save money and creating ahealthier atmosphere in which to live.

As spring cleaning season gets set to hit full swing, what better time to do some "spring greening"?Homeowners can make the most of spring cleaningby making several manageable changes around thehouse that can protect the environment withoutdisrupting one's current lifestyle.

Clean green. Instead of using harmful chemicalcleaners when cleaning around the house thisspring, choose green cleaning supplies that don'trelease harmful chemicals or toxins into the air.

Paint with the planet in mind. Spring is a populartime to repaint rooms in the house. Homeownerswith painting on their to-do list this springcleaning season should choose no- or low-VOC

    (volatile organic compound) paints.

Fix those drafts. Chances are, after a long winterhomeowners are well aware of which rooms werewarm and which might have had drafts. Visitthose colder rooms and plug any air leaks aroundthe house. This will result in a lower heating billnext winter and could save substantial amountsof energy. For homeowners with attics, checkingthe attic for air infiltration should be done eachand every year.

Manageable Means to Going GreenAround the House

Unplug the appliances. Perhaps nothingaround the house silently uses energy as muchas a plugged-in appliance that's not being used.Certain estimates suggest as much as 40percent of a monthly utility bill is going towardpowering home appliances that are turned off. While every home is different, it's a safe betthat most homes can save energy by simplyunplugging appliances that aren't in use.

Go low-flow. Spring cleaning isn't just forclearing out the winter clutter. It's also a timewhen many homeowners fix up the house. Ifreplacing showerheads, faucets or even toiletsis on the to-do list, replace existing fixtureswith low-flow models to save water andmoney.

Shop for sustainable materials. Sustainableflooring is growing in popularity now that

going green has truly taken off. Search forwood that has been harvested in anenvironmentally friendly ways. Sustainableflooring materials include bamboo and cork, which many homeowners find as aestheticallyappealing as it is eco-friendly.

Explore alternative landscaping methods.Xeriscaping, a style of landscape design thatrequires little or no irrigation, can savesignificant amounts of water. However, homeowners should consult a landscaping

professional to determine if xeriscaping is aviable alternative to more traditional landscapingin their region. If xeriscaping can be done, thenhomeowners will save water while also reducingthe use of potentially harmful pesticides andchemicals commonly used to keep lawns lookinglush.

Every spring, homeowners head outside to takestock of how the winter treated their lawn.

Homeowners in areas that experience heavy snowor rainfall each winter likely do not look forward tothis inventory, fearful of what another harsh winterdid to their property. Fallen tree branches, frozenground and winter wind storms can do a number oneven the most well-manicured lawns, turning asummertime labor of love into a nightmare.

While homeowners might not be able to do anythingabout the weather, there are ways to revitalize alawn each spring. And you don't have to be anaccomplished landscaper to handle the task. The

following tips can help bring your luscious lawnback to life, helping make winter a distant memory.

Revitalize Your Lawn Aftera Long Winter

Remove all debris from your yard. Debrisincludes any trash in the yard, wood, large roots, fallen branches, and even stones. The presenceof trash such as broken glass or even fadedpaper products such as cups or bags is not onlyunsafe for the environment, but it can proveharmful to anyone who might be out in the yardonce your grass grows, especially if you havechildren. Oftentimes, winter winds can blow

trash from nearby garbage cans across the yard,no matter how neatly homeowners put out theirtrash.

Consider seeding the lawn if need be. For lawnsthat took a particularly harsh beating over thewinter, consider seeding the lawn to helprevitalize it. When seeding a lawn, be sure youchoose the right seeds. Different regions respond

better to different types of grass. But don't beintimidated if you don't know the correct grass tochoose. Simply ask a landscaper or consult alawn care specialist at a nearby homeimprovement center as to which type of grass isthe best fit your region and your yard.

Smooth the soil. Once all debris been removed, examine the soil for any abnormalities that mightneed to be smoothed out. Use a spade or rake tosmooth any areas that aren't up to par. Next you'llwant to loosen the soil as well, something thatcan be done with a garden rake. Any unsightlyareas, such as humps or ditches, should either besmoothed out or filled in, depending on which isappropriate. This can be done with some soil andshould not prove too costly.

When you're ready to seed, the seed can bescattered by hand for smaller yards, or with adrop spreader for larger lawns. When spreadingwith a drop spreader, use the suggested amountof seed on the bag (even a little less seed shoulddo the trick) and make sure you spread out therows evenly in the same direction. Once you'vesowed the first part of your lawn in one direction, you can crisscross back over that part at a90-degree angle, making sure you keep equaldistance and calibrate your spreader at the samespeed.

Add mulch for aesthetic and practical appeal.Moist helps the soil, and can also add aestheticappeal to a lawn. Moist helps the soil by allowingit to retain moisture, making it more conducive togrowing healthy grass. When laying mulch down, keep the mulch at roughly a quarter-inch toensure your lawn will grow in nicely.

One of the best things about the dawn of spring andthe return of warmer weather is the chance to get

out of the house and get some fresh air. Forhomeowners, this is the perfect opportunity toassess any damage the previous months did toyards and develop a plan restore properties.

Restoring Your Property Af tera Long Winter

Don't jump the gun. The first warm day of springmight seem like a great time get out in the yardand get your hands dirty. But it's best to wait untilthe grass has completely dried out before gettingto work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk oftearing out grass, which can cause bald spots andthe growth of weeds down the road. In addition, stepping on the grass while the ground is still wetcan compact the soil, which can slow drainageand block the lawn's roots from breathing.

Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy trafficarea once the warm weather arrives. If your yardtransforms into a child's wonderland upon thearrival of spring and summer, you might want torevive the soil by aerating. When the yard getsheavy usage, it's easy for soil to becomecompacted, which makes it hard for air and waterto reach the lawn's roots. That can eventuallymake for a less-than-appealing lawn. So if youryard is the place to be come the warmer months, aerate in the spring to loosen the soil and make iteasier for the lawn to withstand the monthsahead.

Remove debris that's piled up. Debris has atendency to infest a yard over the course of thewinter months. Fallen branches, stones and eventrash can accumulate in a yard, putting those whospend time in the yard at risk of injury once thewarm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigsand pebbles that are blown across the yardduring a windy winter can be embedded in theyard, making the yard less of a haven and moreof a hazard. Once the grass is dry enough to walkon, walk around the property and remove anydebris that's piled up over the last few months.

Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeownerswho routinely spend their summers agonizingover weeds throughout the yard should considerapplying a pre-emergent weed killer around thebeginning of spring. It's important to do so

around the end of March or early April, when theweeds have not yet had a chance to grow. Whenapplying, follow the dosage instructions providedby the product's manufacturer. Such instructionsoften recommend a second application rightbefore summer begins.

No matter how harsh the winter months might havebeen, spring is a great time for homeowners torestore the property around their homes.

Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, youcan begin to remove thatch that's built up overthe winter. Thatch is potentially very harmful tosoil, blocking sunlight, air and moisture the soilneeds to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy.Thatch removal does not necessarily need to bean annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Just use adethatching rake to make the job much easier.

The spring season is a time for many things, fromrediscovering the great outdoors to clearing theclutter leftover from another long winter.

For many homeowners, that spring cleaning alsomeans a careful examination of a home's exterior.Winter can prove especially harsh on a home'sexterior, in particular the roof. While stains on theceiling or obvious leaks are easy ways to detect roofdamage, many times problems with a roof are notso obvious. For homeowners hoping to give theirroof a thorough end-of-winter examination, consider the following tips for recognizing roofdamage.

    Recognizing Roof Damage

Look on the ground surrounding the home. While

it might seem odd to look down to see if a roofhas been damaged, some of the most telltalesigns of roof damage could be right in the yard, nearby bushes or driveway. Once the snowclears, homeonwers should take a walk aroundthe property and look on the grounds for anyshingles, be it full shingles or pieces of shingle. This is best done as soon as possible anddefinitely should be done before the first lawnmowing of the spring season.

Inspect the roof's supporting cast. Homeowners

living in regions where heavy snowfall is commonshould also look at the support beams in theirattics. Roofs tend to take a beating in regionswith heavy snowfall, as the weight of all that snowcan take its toll over time. Even if the roofappears to have made it through another harshwinter, it's still a safe and smart bet to see howwell the roof's supporting cast handled the harshweather as well.
