From the HSIE Coordinator

‘Water from the Rock’ is the title of a book that explores Marist Spirituality. Like many teachers, I have used it as a source of inspiration in countless prayers and reflections over the years. I never appreciated the significance of the title until I had the opportunity to go and visit L’Hermitage a few years ago. It is the place where 200 years ago Saint Marcellin Champagnat chose the site in the Pilat Region in Southern France, upon which he would build a residence to house the first Marist Brothers. It is, as you would expect, a special place.

Nestled in a valley, the L’Hermitage was carved from the rock by the first Marists. With the Gier River flowing through the centre, this valley is a place where the water seemingly flows from the rock. It would have been an imposing, cold and unforgiving place before the toil and tenacity of Saint Marcellin transformed it into the serene and picturesque place it is today.

Which brings me to last Tuesday’s Champagnat Mass and festivities. This was not only a wonderful community event for the College, but for me, it was a reminder of how far Saint Marcellin’s vision has come. Marcellin College Randwick is a long way from L’Hermitage in France, yet in many ways, it is not. The same Marist values of Presence, Family Spirit, Simplicity, In the Way of Mary and Love of Work that were the guiding principles for Saint Marcellin 200 years ago were evident in abundance throughout the day.

With many parents, Marist Brothers and special guests, the school became a community that celebrated Mass, showcased our talents during a musical concert and then raised money for Marist initiatives. It was a day to share food and enjoy each other’s company. All of these things are echoed in a paragraph from ‘Water from the Rock’ that states,

‘Whatever the members of a community do – working, struggling for justice, serving society, praying or sharing meals and relaxation together – we recognise the blessings of God. We are blessed with the gift of life and with companions for our mission and our life’s journey. We proclaim, not just what God has done for each one of us, but what God is doing for us together, as family and community.’

The Inaugural Champagnat Award - Hon John O’Meally AM, RFD

Above: Headmaster Mr John Hickey presenting the Hon John O’Meally AM RFD with a Champagnat Award

A highlight of our Champagnat Day celebrations this year was initiating a Champagnat Award to a distinguished ex-student of the College.

You would be aware that Champagnat Awards are highly valued in the community and are presented to a small number of students and staff each year on the Feast of the Founder of Marist Education, St Marcellin Champagnat. This year I was delighted to welcome back to the College for the ceremony the Hon John O’Meally AM, RFD and present him with the inaugural Champagnat Award for distinguished service to the broader community. Please find below some background on John taken from my address last week:

• John O’Meally attended Marcellin College from 1950-1957 and has maintained a close association with the Marist Brothers ever since

• He was affiliated with the Marist Brothers in the Brothers Chapel here at Randwick in 1990 by Br Alman Dwyer, who was Provincial at the time but had also taught John while he was at Marcellin

• He graduated from the University of Sydney and was admitted to the Bar in 1964• He practiced as a Barrister until he was appointed to the Bench in New South Wales in 1979. Prior to this appointment he

had acted as a Judge of the National Court of New Guinea and was a frequent visitor to PNG as a Barrister in its Supreme Court.

• He has served as a Judge on numerous courts both here and abroad as well serving on a number of Tribunals • To list his achievements, and more importantly, his significant impact on so many people here today, would keep us for

far too long but I do want to mention in particular his role in the Dust Diseases Tribunal• The name Bernie Banton may not mean much to the boys, but many parents and staff would remember Bernie as the

face of the asbestos campaign 10-15 years ago. Mr Banton was terminally ill due to his asbestos related disease but he fought on till the end in search of compensation and justice. Judge O’Meally became the President of the Dust Disease Tribunal in 1998 and it was he who convened the tribunal’s bedside hearing for Bernie Banton in the Palliative Care unit of Sydney’s Concord Hospital in 2007 towards the end of his life. The courtroom came to the bedside to allow the terminally ill Mr Banton to give evidence.

• He has worked very hard in the service of many individuals, communities and nations to ensure fairness and justice are at the centre of decision making and in doing so has made our communities better places

• In recognition of his work, he became a Member of the Order of Australia on Australia Day 2002

Above: The College was honoured to have Mr and Mrs O’Meally as guests at this year’s Champagnat Day festivities

Mr Chris ShieldsDirector of Teaching & M-Learning

From the Deputy Headmaster

As you would know I have just returned from three weeks in the States. I spent some time in Disneyland and Hawaii. Two very different places that I would highly recommend. Disneyland is a truly magical place that captivated and entertained the whole family (even the adults), whilst Hawaii is a superb holiday destination that has something for everyone-great scenery, beaches, food, friendly people and plenty of history.

Of course, when I put in the paperwork requesting long-service leave I hadn’t envisaged that I would be Acting Deputy. This meant that twelve months later when I “jetted off”, many people at Marcellin had to do a lot more work. I would like to particularly thank the Headmaster Mr Hickey, Mr Shields who took over as Deputy, College Executive members Mr Burke and Ms Dove, as well as the Year Coordinators and other teachers who all did a fantastic job in making sure my absence wasn’t missed. I believe that it is the mark of a great staff when so many capable people can absorb the duties and responsibilities of others so seamlessly and without fuss.

Thanks also to the many students who gave me such great travel advice ranging from how to beat the queues at Disneyland to the best eateries, shops and tourist places around Waikiki. It helped to ensure a very hassle free family holiday!

Year 8.1 PDHPE Newman On Wednesday, 13 June, as part of an enrichment assessment task, the 8.1 PDHPE Newman Stream class were involved in making a video presentation and then teaching sixty-four Year 3 students from OLSH Primary School, Randwick.

The boys were firstly required to prepare a video presentation based on a cricket skill, such as batting and bowling. In groups of five, they were responsible for the script, demonstration and editing of the video.

The next part of the assessment was for each group to teach their cricket skill to the primary school students. The boys and girls were separated into three different groups; rotating between the three cricket skills on the day. The Marist Centre and the Bottom Yard of the College were used to conduct the cricket clinic. The skills being taught on the day were batting, bowling and a modified game of Cricket (Diamond Cricket).

The boys and girls from OLSH Primary School said how they thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being in a Senior School and learning three different cricket skills.

The Lionel Bowen Lecture Series seeks to engage with leading figures in Australian society who have contributed significantly to the common good, and inspire others to emulate their example. The lecture series is a public event open to all in our community.

We warmly invite you to join us for this special event. This year’s lecture will be presented by Jesuit priest Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO. Fr Frank is Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Social Services Australia – the Catholic Church’s peak body for social services in Australia.

Fr Frank has been a long-time advocate for human rights and social justice in Australia. His contact and involvement with people who are poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged began early in his priestly ministry when he worked in the inner Sydney parish of Redfern with priest activist Father Ted Kennedy. In every role he has had since, he has been amplifying the voice of conscience, especially the voice of those who are marginalised.

Fr Frank is also an adjunct professor at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture and the Australian National University College of Law and the National Centre for Indigenous Studies. He is also the superior of the Jesuit community at Xavier House in Canberra.

Congratulations to all the Rugby League teams for the victories against Marist North Shore. Mr Wilkie’s U/13C team have continued to be the surprise packet of the competition this year with their only loss so far coming at the hands of our U/13B team.
