A Message from Mr Anthony Clarke, Director of Marist Mission and Life Formation

This year Marist schools are celebrating the Montagne Year. The word ‘Montagne’ comes from the surname of a teenage boy who grew up in the area of France where Marcellin Champagnat resided. When Marcellin was asked by the boy’s mother to visit her dying son, he found a boy who was ignorant of God. This event shocked Marcellin and encouraged him in his plans to establish an order of teaching Brothers, known today as the Marist Brothers, to help evangelise young people. Nearly two hundred years later, not only are there over two hundred Marist Brothers serving the Australian community but also many hundreds of men and women Marists educating young people in the Catholic faith as well as preparing them for full and wholesome lives as adult Christians. The Marist Brothers began their ministry in Australia in 1872 and it continues in all States and Territories today. It began when Marcellin Champagnat said ‘yes’ to God, through the invitation of a local priest for him to go to the seminary and begin his training as a priest. By 1817, Marcellin was ordained and had begun his educational work in the parishes around Lavalla in southern France. ‘Every diocese fits into our plans’ he declared.

In this Montagne year, we are invited to focus on the ‘Montagnes’ around us, those searching for God in a world confused and distressed by a lack of opportunity for some and peace for all. Today the Spirit that was very much alive in St Marcellin Champagnat longs to live and breathe in each of us. The charism that he brought into our Church and throughout the world is thriving in our community and in the relationships we share. Whether we are students, parents or staff, we seek to be people who model our founder, who respond to the needs of all because it is the right and just way of living and acting.

Like Marcellin, we imitate his simple presence amongst all, who reach beyond lines of discrimination and exclusion, embodying a spirit of family to all we encounter. Let us be challenged by his actions, his love, and his witness of a different way of living, but particularly his call to go and serve in Jesus’ name, in a caring manner to one another.

Marcellin lived pursuing a vision where he sought to provide a way for all young people to experience the love of God and to obtain a rich

education. For Champagnat, education was a powerful means for forming and transforming the minds and hearts of all those he encountered,

as he carried a heart for those on the peripheries.

“I cannot see a child without wanting to tell him how much God loves him...” Marcellin Champagnat visiting the dying Montagne.

“To raise children, we must love them and love them

equally forever. “

As we move closer to the end of Semester One, organisation is critical for the boys. Many boys have just completed exams and now will be finalising assignments, finishing units of work, completing homework and hopefully spending time each night revising. Your sons must be organised both at school and at home and there is a key role here for parents. If you can assist them in their time management and general organisation at home, the many tasks they have to get through night after night and week after week are more likely to get done and done more efficiently.

As you know, boys are very good at leaving things until the last minute, so without good time management some things may not be completed at all. I would also encourage parents to monitor your son’s work at home. It is worth taking the time to

From the Deputy Headmaster

Thank you to everyone involved in Champagnat week last week. Each morning Mr Laing reflected on the life of Marcellin Champagnat over the PA during homeroom, thus enabling all of us to consider what is means to be Marist. Champagnat Day on Friday was outstanding. A wonderful Mass set the tone of the day, followed by Marcellin’s Got Talent. When students were dismissed, all staff gathered in Greenstead Hall to listen to three of St Marcellin’s letters and further explore the question, “What does it mean to be Marist”.

I would like to congratulate the staff and students listed below, who received a Champagnat Award last Friday. To receive a Champagnat award, the following criteria must be met:

St Marcellin Champagnat’s character and life exemplified the qualities of encouragement, persistence, trust, care for others, hard work, generosity and respect.

look over their homework and read through their assignments. When you ask them questions about what they have done and why they have done it, it enables them to self-reflect and possibly re-evaluate their task. No matter what year your son is in at school, your involvement as partners in their education is essential.

Have a nice week.

The Music Corner

On Sunday, 31 May, St Joseph’s Parish in Rosebury held an Open Mic Night at the parish hall. Students from schools around the area were invited to attend and perform in a relaxed and casual setting. Upon walking into the hall, a very cool ‘bohemian’ set up was on display - candles, pillows, cushions and dim lighting - which set the mood for the evening. A number of boys from Marcellin’s elective music classes attended and were excited to play and sing simply for the enjoyment of it.

Jacob Siles, Michael Jenkins, Alex Walker, Alessandro Palumbo and Tim Brabook, all from Year 12, showed off their talents in drum solos, acoustic sets and vocal performances. Michael Murphy from Year 11 and Paul Escorrido from Year 10 sang a few duets, and their perfect harmonies and very technical singing wowed the audience. Jaysen Largent from Year 9 was the surprise package, being the youngest musician amongst the senior music students. Jaysen sang two songs and played piano with confidence and maturity in what would have intimidating for him with the older students present.

Many thanks to Father Greg and Phillip Merchant who organised the event with the youth group called JOEY’s Teens. It was a great opportunity for Marcellin musicians to perform and share their talents amongst family and friends.

The decisive fixture was against Edmund Rice College, Wollongong. WINTER SEASON – Rugby League & SoccerMarcellin came up against Champagnat Catholic College Pagewood last week in Round 5 of the MCC competition, which was a fitting ‘match up’ during Champagnat week. This proved to be a very successful day for Marcellin College. Our Rugby League teams excelled, defeating Pagewood in all but one match contested with a number of very dominant scorelines. Success was also enjoyed on the Soccer fields with the A Grade, B Grade and U13B teams leading the way.

Yesterday Round 6 of the MCC competition was completed, with our teams competing against Kogarah. As expected there were a number of hard fought matches, with victories shared evenly between the two schools. While Kogarah dominated the majority of Soccer fixtures, our A Grade and U14 teams both managed to draw their matches. MCR Rugby League teams won five of seven matches played. The strongest performances this week came from the U13A, U13B, U14 and B Grade teams.

As we move towards the latter stages of the winter season, it’s great to see the majority of our Rugby League and Soccer teams entrenched in the top half of the table and looking likely to qualify for Semi Finals.
