ANZAC CEREMONY Our term began with a most moving and personalized ANZAC ceremony on the first morning. An addion to what is already a poignant and significant event in the College calendar each year was the presence of Mr Ralph Devlin QC AM, and his wife Frances. Mr Devlin is the namesake and nephew of Ralph Devlin, an Old Boy of Marcellin College from the 1930s who was tragically shot and killed the day before the Concentraon Camp in which he was a POW was liberated by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. The College library, The Devlin Centre, is named in honour of him and all of those other 30 Marcellin Old Boys who made the ulmate sacrifice. Mr Devlin’s address was a very personal account of his uncle’s life, with a parcular focus on those last days and the lead up to his death. He is in the process of wring a book on the subject and has done an enormous amount of research. Students, staff, parents and other guests were deeply moved by the recount of this young man’s life and death and it really helped to bring home the significance of the occasion, parcularly for the boys. Several hundred mothers, grandmothers, aunes and boys came together for a memorable liturgy in Greenstead Hall. I remarked at the conclusion of the Mass that the numbers certainly made a statement about our College as a faith community. College Chaplin Fr Greg Morgan spoke passionately in his Homily about the important role women play in the life of their sons. It was a wonderful occasion and I think the ‘mums’ have certainly thrown down the gauntlet to the fathers in terms of numbers so gentlemen, over to you. Welcome back to Term 2.

ANZAC CEREMONYOur term began with a most moving and personalized ANZAC ceremony on the first morning. An addition to what is already a poignant and significant event in the College calendar each year was the presence of Mr Ralph Devlin QC AM, and his wife Frances. Mr Devlin is the namesake and nephew of Ralph Devlin, an Old Boy of Marcellin College from the 1930s who was tragically shot and killed the day before the Concentration Camp in which he was a POW was liberated by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. The College library, The Devlin Centre, is named in honour of him and all of those other 30 Marcellin Old Boys who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mr Devlin’s address was a very personal account of his uncle’s life, with a particular focus on those last days and the lead up to his death. He is in the process of writing a book on the subject and has done an enormous amount of research. Students, staff, parents and other guests were deeply moved by the recount of this young man’s life and death and it really helped to bring home the significance of the occasion, particularly for the boys.

MOTHER’S DAY MASSOn Wednesday morning we had our largest ever attendance at the Mother’s Day Mass. Several hundred mothers, grandmothers, aunties and boys came together for a memorable liturgy in Greenstead Hall.

Photos of the Mass are on Page 7 of this newsletter.

LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLYToday we gathered at the Headmaster’s Assembly to acknowledge our newest student leaders. Under a revised student leadership program, nine new Year 11 Leaders will begin their ‘apprenticeship’ working alongside their Year 12 counterparts in a range of portfolios.

Old boy and current parent of the College Mr Matthew Vesper was the guest speaker. Matthew had been part of the Training Program for these leaders and so it was most appropriate for him to be there to speak about leadership from his vast experience in the Law and the Armed Forces.

My thanks also to Mr Paul MacGee, Year 10 Coordinator, who has been the driving force behind the new Student Leadership structure. The Assembly was a great acknowledgement of these fine young men.

of high standards here and experimenting with drugs is something that flies in the face of that mantra. Thirdly, an issue such as this provides an opportunity for parents to encourage an open dialogue with their sons. While perhaps confronting and potentially uncomfortable, it is something best addressed rather than ignored.

As I was reflecting on all of this and how the College might deal with those involved, I went back to a book I was reading earlier in the year called The Name of God is Mercy. The book is the result of a series of interviews conducted by the Vatican journalist Andrea Tornielli with Pope Francis. It explores the reasoning behind the Pope’s decision to call an extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy this year. With chapter headings such as “Sinners Yes, Corrupt No” and “Shepherds, Not Scholars of the Law”, and discussions about vexed issues like the relationship between Mercy and Justice, you can pick up the themes that the Holy Father is elaborating on. In exploring the relationship between Mercy and Justice, Francis states:

Mercy is an element that is important, even indispensable, for human relationships, so that brotherhood may exist. Justice on its own is not enough.

He goes on to speak of a ‘true justice’ that we should be seeking – a justice that flows from love, that most fundamental of Christian values at the centre of all our beliefs. As a Catholic school in the Marist tradition, we are always striving to be true to our mission and get the balance right.

There has always been and will continue to be into the future, a fine line between Mercy and Justice. What seems ‘Just’ to one, may seem harsh to another. At Marcellin, that fine line is walked within the ‘culture’ that exists here – expecting the highest standards while respecting the dignity of each individual.

It is indeed timely that at our Parents In Touch gathering on June 16, Professor Ian Hickie will be speaking about adolescent mental health. He may well comment on the potential impact of drugs on the mental health of young people. I hope you can make it along to this evening – details appear on Page 3.

A TIME FOR SOME REFLECTION

In discussions I have had recently with members of our Community, I have heard again and again what a positive culture we have here at Marcellin. It is certainly what I experience on a daily basis. It challenged me to think about the why and the how questions - because it is important to be able to identify and articulate the things that make us the way we are. It is also important to identify what else we could or should be doing to not only maintain but enhance what we are doing. The result of these reflections is a ‘Cultural Audit’ which will gather data about the College from parents, staff, students and Old Boys. Parents will receive a letter outlining the process next week. The data gathered will be invaluable for the preparation of our next strategic plan which begins in 2017.

One thing that I’m confident will come through in the audit is that one of the strengths of the College is the high standards expected of the boys. This can be challenging at times though. There are times when they will be exposed to things that are in direct conflict with the expectations of parents and the school. One example of this is the relative ease with which illicit drugs can be accessed. Police tell us this is a significant problem in the local community. As a result I would like to take this opportunity to make the following points in relation to how the College views this and in doing so, highlight the way we go about maintaining our high standards, while caring for the individuals involved:

• The College takes the matter very seriously and always acts accordingly.• The statistics on drug use by adolescents is concerning and schools have a responsibility to educate their students on the dangers and risks of experimenting with any drugs. We do this here at Marcellin through the curriculum and through the use of guest speakers and forums which address the issue. However, we are constantly reviewing what is being done in order to see if any extra programs should be put in place.• Schools also have a responsibility to do their utmost to ensure a safe and drug free environment and therefore must be vigilant in ensuring that drugs are not brought on to school property at any time. Here at Marcellin I believe we have very good structures in place and I believe they are effective in dealing with the issue.• The response to any issue to do with drugs by the College must always be multi-layered. First and foremost we would deal with students affected and their families. Secondly, a strong message would be given to the entire student population about the danger of experimenting with any form of drugs and the serious consequences that would follow. We speak to the boys often about the expectation

With blessings for the fortnight ahead.

From the Deputy Headmaster

Welcome back to Term Two. My hope is that all students have had a nice break and are ready to continue their learning journey as the bar has raised a little higher. Students are constantly reminded about high standards. Without high standards, maximum potential is not reached. Regardless of your ability, reaching a little higher is achievable by everybody. If parents can monitor student’s homework and assignments and see that both are being attended to each and every night then better results and outcomes will be reached.

UNIFORMThis term students are expected to be in full winter uniform. Students will be required to wear their blazer every day, apart from Thursday. Students also need to wear a belt and polished black shoes. Please also note that students may only wear lace-up sports shoes of a Thursday with the sports uniform. The details of the College uniform and expectations are outlined on Pages 12 and 13 of the Student Diary. I must say that I was very impressed with the standard of uniform last week.

A THOUGHT FROM EDUCATION EXPERT ANDREW FULLER“Increase your Motivation”Change your routine - If you’ve been finding it difficult to get yourself motivated, change your set pattern. Study in a local library rather than at home or change the room you study in. Just as you learn to surf best by surfing, you learn to succeed in exams and essays by giving your undivided attention to your study. Practice in the same conditions you intend to perform in. There won’t be electronics and music in the exam room. www.andrewfuller.com.au

ANZAC Day Ceremony

This year the traditional ANZAC day ceremony was held on Tuesday 26th April. The ex-students and members of the Coogee Randwick RSL have always appreciated the way in which the College and students commemorate ANZAC Day as in return we all appreciate what these men and their fallen comrades went through during the years of war.

Marcellin College student’s and staff took the time to pause to remember in a very special, personal way, those 31 ex- students of Marcellin who gave their lives in the service of their country. The names of these men are listed on plaques at the base of the memorial statue of Saint Marcellin Champagnat in the courtyard. This statue was erected by the Ex-Student’s Association in the late 1940s to honour those sons of Marcellin, who made the supreme sacrifice in war.

This year, the commemoration service was held in the Marist Centre and featured a personal address by Ralph Devlin outlining the story of his Uncle (Ralph Devlin) who lost his life in the last weeks of World War II. His address was a moving and informative tribute to the sacrifice of Ralph Devlin but also all who sacrificed so much. In addition to the traditional ceremony 31 current students symbolically represented each of the 31 ex-students who gave their lives for their country. Every member of the College community also placed a poppy at the base of the courtyard statue of Marcellin Champagnat. Many of the guests commented on the reverence with which the student body participated in the ceremony.

Visual Art Excursion

On Tuesday, 5 April, Year 11 and Year 12 Visual Art attended the annual ‘Art Express’ excursion at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

We first viewed ‘Art Express’, an exhibition of outstanding ‘Body of Works’ of HSC Visual Arts students from across the state in 2015. The students wandered and perused through the Gallery in absolute awe at the amazing technique and creative ideas on display. They were inspired, overwhelmed and intimidated all at the same time by the results of a journey in which Year 12 are currently undertaking. This was followed by an informing study session run by the exhibiting students themselves, who offered some very relatable real life advice.

Following a relaxing lunch in the park, we took part in a practical tour and workshop based on the notable Contemporary Art exhibition, ‘Biennale of Sydney’. The students were exposed to the weird and wonderful world of Contemporary Art. They were intrigued, disgusted, shocked, mesmerised and entertained, as expected, by what was on show; a very different experience to the traditional art they may have been used to. These experiences have been valuable in inspiring and informing the students for their HSC ‘Bodies of Work’, their theoretical studies and of course expanding their minds on what art is and can be.

The John Berne School desperately needs help with volunteers to come to our School

for 2-3 hours on one day a week on a regular basis to help listen to our super needy

kids read aloud as part of our daily literacy support.

We have also just initiated a Berne Library and would love any teenage fiction or non fiction books that families could donate.

WINTER SEASON - RUGBY LEAGUE & SOCCER Rd 1 v LewishamThe winter season got under way with matches against Lewisham in both Rugby League and Soccer.

Our Rugby League teams performed exceptionally well, winning every match contested. The most dominant performances came from our A Grade team that posted fifty points, as well as the U14s and B Grade. Our Soccer teams found Lewisham to be very strong opposition, with just the one victory recorded. Our A Grade team played extremely well to claim a 4-0 victory while the U14s and B Grade lost tight matches.

Rd 2 v RydeYesterday our Rugby League and Soccer teams took on Ryde in Round 2 of the MCC winter season. As expected, Ryde provided our boys with tough competition across both sports. Our Soccer teams claimed victory in two of the six matches – the U15s winning 3-1 and the A Grade winning 2-0. The Rugby League matches were shared evenly between the two schools. Marcellin claimed victory in the U13C’s, U13B’s, B Grade and A Grade.

MCC SOCCERThe official MCC trial round in the final week of Term 1 was the selection trial for the MCC Opens Soccer team. Congratulations to both Nathaniel Sharpley and Evan Davis who were successful in gaining selection in the MCC team.

MCC RUGBY LEAGUELast week’s fixtures against Lewisham doubled as selection trials for the MCC Rugby League teams in both the U15 and A Grade divisions. Once again, Marcellin has been very well represented in these two teams with sixteen students selected in total. Congratulations to the following boys who will represent MCC at the CCC Trials later this month:

Under 15 – Will Fagan, Kobi Rugless, Lachlan Gale, Thomas Giles, Ky Hill, Ryan Baghdadi and Tevita Taumoepenu

A Grade – Jonathan Mitsias, Nicholas Mougios, Campbell Graham, Lachlan Lam, Joshua Cook, Ethan O’Neill, Jed Bouris, Callan Turner, Joseph Galea and Bobby Nader

CCC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPSThe following sixteen Marcellin students were selected to represent MCC at the NSWCCC Swimming Championships on Friday 29 April: Connor Barrett, Marcus Littlejohn, Billy Reynolds, Beau McConnell, Ryan Wilkes, Alejandro Belmont, Kel Gollan, Cormac Guthrie, Kyle O’Sullivan, Philipp Trupke, Jake Andrews, Zac McConnell, Anthony Sinapi, Jacob Jakubczak-Phillips and Toby Dunn

Some outstanding results were achieved by our swimmers including victory in the 17 Years 4 x 50m Medley Relay (Kel Gollan, Cormac Guthrie, Nick Pavlakis and Philipp Trupke) and individually by Cormac Guthrie (1st 100m Freestyle, 1st 200m Freestyle, 2nd 50m Freestyle) and Alejandro Belmont (3rd 50m Freestyle, 4th 50m Butterfly).

Such fine results earned these boys selection in the NSWCCC team to compete this week at the NSW All Schools Championships.

AFL - SWANS CUP Marcellin’s Opens AFL team played in the Swans Cup yesterday at ELS Hall Field in Ryde. The competition consisted of three games in one day. The boys won the day’s opening game against Epping Boys High convincingly, showing great desperation to gain possession and move the ball forward. Fullback Luke Reid chipped in with a goal in the second half to seal the deal (5.5.35 to 1.2.8).

Game 2 proved to be more challenging with Blackwattle Bay forcing the Randwick boys to be accountable and run back to defend. Lead by Harry Lewis’ attack on the ball the team was inspired in the second half to come out with the win (3.1.19 to 2.1.13).

After a long lunch break, the MCR boys came out with fresh legs, asserting authority early in game 3 against Forest High. Brilliance in the midfield by Luke Johnson and Jared Deep ensured a comfortable victory (6.4.40 to 0.0.0). The Marcellin boys aimed to finish regional champions at the end of game 4, but a slow first half left the boys a massive task in the later stages of the game. Coach Mr Broe gave a fantastic half time speech as Errol Gulden lifted his game guaranteeing a clean sweep of the competition for his team (7.2.44 to 1.2.8). The youngster was exceptional up forward with his classy skills and athletic ability, earning him the ‘Player of the Day’ award.

The team now progresses onto a tougher challenge at the State Cup which will be held at Blacktown later in the year. Well done to all the boys who took part in the day.

MCR ATHLETICS CARNIVALThe 93rd Annual College Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, 29 April at ES Marks Athletics Field. Participation on the part of the boys was fantastic across each age group.

It was great to see the enthusiastic involvement in each of the seven events contested throughout the day. Well done to our Age Champions who performed so well across a range of events.

Congratulations to the Bowen house that claimed victory in the overall points tally to retain the aggregate trophy which they have now won for the past five years. Bowen House has now completed the 2016 ‘Double’ having claimed victory at both the Swimming and Athletics carnivals.

Another highlight of the day was the staff/students relay which was the final event on the program and one that was keenly contested. On behalf of the staff, thank you to all parents who assisted and provided food for the day, as well as those who attended to support their sons. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Australian Marist Basketball Carnival: 10 -15 April 2016

In the first week of the school holidays the Marcellin College A Grade Basketball Team participated in the 27th Australian Marist Basketball Carnival. The carnival is a gathering of Marist schools from all over Australia and is a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate the Marist spirit. As there are schools from all states in Australia the standard of competition is extremely high; every game is tough and competitive. This year the carnival was hosted by St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill with all competition games played at Bankstown Basketball Stadium.

The carnival spanned six days and each day the boys had to play up to three very tough games. On the first day of play one of our starting five players, Max Houle, dislocated his shoulder in a very hard fall. Over the next four days the team missed Max’s strong offence and defense however went on to win 4 of their 8 games, overcoming teams from Marist College Ashgrove, St Joseph’s Hunter’s Hill (two teams) and Marist Catholic College Penshurst. Our final placing was a very credible 13th out of 24 schools, given the injury and illness to players throughout the week, this was an extremely determined effort by MCR A Grade.

The boys represented Marcellin College perfectly on and off the court; their behaviour was exemplary. Special mention should be made of the Year 12 students in the team who were strong leaders and role models for the younger members of the team. Derek Daquel as team captain displayed outstanding leadership on and off the court and thoroughly deserved the Most Valuable Player Medal he received from the organisers of the carnival. Derek had to play many minutes given the injuries to other players and was outstanding both offensively and defensively in every single game.

There are many people responsible for the team’s success at the Australian Marist Carnival. The team received enormous assistance from Mrs Hayley Spencer who gave up a week of

her holidays to manage the team and assist me in all facets of supporting the boys. Special thanks to Mr Peter Buxton who transported the team to the opening mass and dinner and Mr Paul Leary who supported the boys by driving the school bus to and from Bankstown Basketball Stadium. Mr John Hickey was also on hand to transport the boys and cheer them on. The parents of our players are always a fantastic source of support and once again gave valuable encouragement and assistance with special thanks to Mrs Virginia Black, Mr Jason Laing, Mr Roland Pizzinato and Mrs Maria and Mr Marvin Daquel who assisted with transport and team support throughout the carnival and the various events associated with participating in the carnival. Such success is not possible without an exceptional team, my sincerest thanks to the boys who participated in the 27th Australian Marist Basketball Carnival.

ARE YOU 18? HAVE YOU ENROLLED TO VOTE?

Voting is compulsory by law but most importantly, young people have the power to shape our future. At the last election 400,000 young people between the age of 18 and 24 election were not enrolled to vote.

Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull is expected to call an election any day, that means people will only have seven days to enrol to vote from this announcement date. We are asking students who have turned 18 to take a moment now to enrol. Enrolments can be checked and details updated with the Australian Electoral Commission here: http://bit.ly/1WaouFT.

Any student in Years 8-12 who has not yet collected their yearbook should go

to Mr Buxton’s office for collection.
