Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Malo E Lelei, Pagbati, Kia Orana, Vanakkam, Namaste, Ni Hao, Greetings

Welcome back to term two, even if those holidays just seem like a distant memory now. Students have settled back into classes well and winter sports begun last week. We have been blessed with continued sunny weather which is giving parents a little grace to be able to sort out school jumpers and jackets for the cold wet times that are certainly to come. Our Marist pillar for this year is Aroha ki te Mahi - Love of Work, and at the start of a term that has much internal assessment in it as well as service groups and school council really getting their plan and goals underway, it is appropriate that we are reminded of what it means to be part of our Marcellin family, and our Christian family as children of God. Part of the gift of belonging is also the responsibility it brings with trying to live out our faith through the pillars of St Marcellin. Aroha ki te Mahi - Love of Work challenges us to:

● ‘roll up our sleeves’ and be prepared to do whatever is needed ● approach work with a sense of pride and dignity as St Marcellin did ● having purpose and meaning to life and contributing to the wider community ● be a ‘co-creator’, continuing the work of creation with joy and hope ● develop a strong character and resilient will with a balanced moral conscience and solid values ● show self-motivation and the willingness to put serious effort into our classes ● foster teamwork, a sense of justice and a socially sensitive approach to those in need ● persevere in our own work and the effort we make ● use the gifts and talents we have been blessed with

If as a College we display these values and live as one whanāu, one people as a member of the body of Christ, supporting, sustaining and helping each other to grow then we can truly be called a Christian community. Have a great week, and I hope to see many parents at the various sporting venues over the term. Optima Quaere, Rapu i te pai Seek the Best Jan Waelen Principal

2019 Annual School Ball Marcellin College Annual School Ball is held at Alexandra Park in Greenlane, next week on Saturday 18th May at 6.30pm until 11.30pm. Please remind your students and their guests that this is a school event and school protocols still applies. The School Ball is an alcohol, drug and smoke free event. There are to be absolutely no “after-ball’ functions as these usually involve illegal provision of alcohol to under 18-year olds.

The Ball is always one of the highlights of the year for our senior students. We hope that they will all enjoy a wonderful and safe night out.

Champagnat Day and Mass It is another busy term as we begin our preparation for our full school mass and commence the sacramental programme. On Thursday 6th of June we will celebrate our Champagnat Day Mass. This is our special feast day Mass honouring our patron Saint Marcellin Champagnat. It will take place in the school gymnasium at 11.30am – 12.45pm. Please join us on this special occasion.

Remar We have been very busy in Remar both in Term One and in the holidays. We have had quite a few visits to G.I.F.T. and to Manly and the Year 13 students ran a great Remar Day on the first Wednesday of the holidays. The Year 12 students also composed a lovely reflection about loving service which related to the theme that the Year 13 Remar members had selected for the day. The Year 13 students have also begun the FISH programme which is run for students in Year 7 to 9. Year 10 students will be invited to consider joining Remar later this term. Here are some photos which showcase what has been happening in Remar recently:

Year 11 Deloitte Trip Fourteen Year 11 students celebrated the completion of their Deloitte 'Grow' programme at Deloitte's Auckland City office, last week on Friday 3rd May. The 4 week programme was run by Mr. Shane Kelly and his team of mentors, enabling students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and to work as a team.

Onehunga Library Book Club Yesterday we had our first book club at the Onehunga library. Leena Menon is starting a monthly teen book club, and she asked our Marcellin College book club to help start it up. It will be our students for the first few months, and then it will be broadened out to other teens.

This will be on the first Thursday of the month, except for next month when the library is being renovated. Here is a picture of Leena Menon, Bethel Neguse, Brion Seno, Arna Metcalfe, Epeli Prescott and Minia Prescott. Mrs A. Metcalfe English Teacher

New Staff This term we would like to welcome Faustina Fernandes and Renu Lata both Year 7 & Year 8 teachers. Faustina has been doing some of the teacher relief here at Marcellin last term and will be with us until the end of the year. Renu Lata came to us from Royal Oak Intermediate and will be with us permanently as a full time Year 7 & 8 teacher. We also welcomed back Clare Corbett as our school nurse. We farewelled Danielle Carter and Gertie Wetsteijn (Year 7 & 8 Teachers). Thank you both for your service and to Gertie for your 15 years here at Marcellin College. We wish you both all the best for the future.
