Think Spring! Landscape Supplies:We all look forward to spring...and re-mulching...Mulches are great sources of compost, weed control, and aesthetic character. Some of you already may have started thinking about mulching your beds. To best determine how much mulch is necessary for your landscape this year, you can measure the depth of the already existing mulch. If it is a finer mulch there is a good possibility it has either decomposed or has washed away by heavy precipitation. With a rake, try to "fluff" your beds, use a ruler to measure what the depth of mulch to "top dress" your landscape beds.Feel free to contact Chris or Jim, our bulk sales supervisors, here at Mapledale.

Dyed mulches are available in colors of dark brown, black and red. These mulches are generally made from a process of grinding up slab wood and hardwood pallets, that have had the nails removed, and then the mulch is dyed with vegetable based dyes in vats of the various colors.

Gravels have many applications that require the use of various sizes, and types of mixtures to accomplish the desired, required and specific results. Larger gravel stones approximately fist size are designated as #1, #2 and #3, and are normally used for the base layer of driveways. The #57 gravel is usually placed over the base gravel to fill in, and to create a smoother surface. Limestone finer gravels, such as #10 can be mixed with #57 or added to the final top layer to create a binding, harder and smoother surface for the drive. Gravels are used for berm and road bed requirements and as fill materials for many applications.

In addition to the wood mulches, Mapledale Farm, Inc. offers mulches created from rubber. These products are used for playgrounds surfaces and do not break down and do not fade. This rubber mulch provides a cleaner and softer surface as compared to gravel, dirt, and most wood mulches. This product can be used for residential and commercial applications as well. Rubber mulch is more expensive initially than natural wood mulch, however, this realistically-tectured ground cover, made from 100% recycled, ground-up rubber products, will not fade, rot, compress, or lose its original beauty, even after years of exposure to the elements. Though it is more expensive when you first purchase it, the fact is, that over a number of years it is cost effective because of its durability.

Organic Hardwood Bark Mulch, is exactly that. Hardwood Bark Mulch is the outer layer taken from hardwood trees such as maple, oak, cherry, hickory and other types of hardwood. The rich brown color of hardwood bark mulch is the natural occurring color. There is no brown dye added to the natural mulch. It is processed by being shredded or ground up to provide a finer consistency.

In addition to mulches, Mapledale processes and sells: compost, leaf humus, screened and unscreened topsoil, fill dirt, fill sand, mason sand and various sizes of gravel. These materials are available at our bulk materials location on 9763 Old State Road.

In addition to our bulk materials of mulch, gravel and hard surface supplies, Mapledale Farm, Inc. offers a fullline of commercial turf-care products at wholesaleprices for you do it yourselfers. We sell many bagged products such as potting soil, softener salt, ice-melter, fertilizer, seed, and Baccto bagged gardening products and many other landscaping and construction materials. We also provide PVC pipes and fittings, culverts, ground cloth, weed control, straw, and landscaping tools. Mapledale also carries the Century precast steps in a variety of sizes.

In addition to bulk supplies, our other services include landscaping maintenance, design and installation, snowplowing, ice control and snow removal.

Rubber mulch is available in colors of black, green and redwood, blue and cypress and other earth tones. To contain the rubber mulch in specific areas of application, rubber border timbers are available. These border timbers are also made of recycled rubber that is flexible; this allows for the shaping of the containment border to create a curved, clean and well-maintained look. Mats and tree rings made of recycled rubber are also available in different colors.

Stone Wall:

Winter Pruning Trick:

A dry natural stone stacked wall refers to a wall that is not mortared in place, like a homemade wall created from field stone, or rocks from a creek. A dry natural stone stacked wall usually shifts during severe weather. For the most part, dry natural stone stacked walls simply need a little readjusting. Readjusting the wall can be accomplished by rearranging larger stones with smallerones. It does not require much effort and will boost the aesthetics. If you want a virtually maintenance free wall, we sell astonishingly affordable, Belgard or Unilock outdoor hardscape, which makes the ideal home investment.

For the "Do-It-Yourselfers": Due to the heavy precipitation and ground heaving, though outthe winter, the walking path orstepping stones will become uneven. To correct this problem, the stones need to be picked up and soil, gravel or sand needs to be added to level out the stones.

If you have not had the time to prune your garden or landscape, there is still time!Examine the tree or bush you desire to prune, decide what the desired shape of the tree is and observe the tree at different perspectives. You may wish to mark the limbs before you prune them. This way, you can get a better visual of what the tree or shrub will look like when you are finished. You need to do your pruning before any buds appear.

Fixing uneven stepping stones:

Cut back ornamentalgrasses to about 6 inches tall

Cut back perennials(a plant that lives formore than two years)to almost groundlevel

Remove dead woodand suckers from trees and shrubs, evergreen anddeciduous

Plant dormant trees and shrubs

Move dormant plants

Dig and divideemerging perennials

Remove leaves from the bottom of ponds,or other water features

Clean gutters to prevent water from drowning plants below

Now is the time to...

Please contact Gene, our maintenancesupervisor, for any

lawn or turf care needs.

Lance, our construction supervisor, and his team can design, install and maintain a unique and customized water feature or pond that fits most any budget to make your backyard more beautiful and tranquil.
