Maple Ridge should tweak its parking regulations in the down-town to make it easier to shop and easier to park.

Coun. Gordy Robson, who in 1991, helped form the Maple Ridge Downtown Parking Soci-

ety, says enforcement of parking rules is too strict and it’s hurting business. While regulations are needed, so too is some relaxation.

Robson said that about seven years ago the parking society enforced parking limits in the downtown, a chore that was of-ten seen as more educational than punitive, so that motorists knew the limits.

But with the city’s bylaws depart-ment now in charge, too many fines are being issued.

“These guys are so good you can

be there for an hour and four min-utes and you get a ticket. We didn’t do that when the downtown park-ing [society] ran it.

“They certainly aren’t helping with the way they are enforcing parking, that’s for sure,” Robson said.

“I think we are over zealous. It shouldn’t be looked at as revenue, it should be looked at as an educa-tion and be part of the customer experience and service.”

The downtown parking soci-ety was formed in order to pro-

vide parking lots for employees of downtown business, so they wouldn’t occupy storefront park-ing stalls.

Today, employees who work downtown continue to park where they shouldn’t.

The issue will become more top-of-mind when Walmart opens in Haney Place Mall this fall, draw-ing in more traffic downtown, Robson said.

“I think it’s going to get far worse when Walmart gets here.”

Homeless people on Cliff Avenue are fearing for their safety, after regu-lar threats materialized into gasoline being dumped near the first tent in the long row lining the street.

A man living at the camp who did not wish to be identified said the homeless people there have been warned to leave, and threatened that they will be burned out, or beaten with baseball bats.

“Some people have left in fear. They can’t take it anymore,” he said.

Nicolas Nations working for tot

B y N e i l C o r b e t [email protected]

Nicolas Nation is all about providing the best chance at a good life for a Maple

Ridge toddler fighting a life-threat-ening disease.

The nation will rally this Sunday at the family home of Nicolas’ parents, Rolf Schwuchow and Petra Fellinger, to go over all the work that needs to be done to help Nicolas thrive.

Nicolas was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 1. Children with this disease are typically never able to lift their heads, walk or sit unsupported.

“He is completely dependent,” said his mother. “Something as simple as scratching an itchy nose, reach-ing for a toy well within his reach requires help from someone else.”

Children with SMA Type 1 suffer from system-wide muscle wasting that can affect their ability to breath, and cause other health complica-tions. It is the most common genetic cause of infant death, and many die before their first birthday.

At the same time, each SMA patient is different, and Schwuchow and Fellinger have learned about others who grow up and attend uni-versity and get married. His parents hope that promising new treatments develop into a cure.

Their son is turning three in Octo-ber, and with regular water therapy, motion therapy and other treat-ment, he has grown into a happy toddler. He has parents who are determined to do everything they can for him.

“You realize you can have an impact on this diagnosis,” said Schwuchow.

“We don’t know what tomorrow holds. None of us do. All we can do is give him a quality of life.”

Fellinger said her son is starting to propel himself in the water – the en-vironment where he enjoys freedom of movement. He can give himself a snack, and he’s training to use a power chair.

“He’s the happiest kid. He’s always singing,” she said.

“He’s intelligent, he’s a flirt and he’s an absolute joy,” said his dad.

Nicolas’ critical water therapy at a public pool brings with it germs and a risk of Nicolas contracting illness. The flu or a cold can be far more serious for him. The family

was looking at a home pool instal-lation and other modifications to their house, in order for Nicolas to have the best home environment they could afford. When they spoke with a builder about the renovations they could afford, and the plans ballooned.

Andrea Cihelka, president of Gara Construction, is leading Nicolas Nation in the construction project, dubbed an “extreme makeover.”

She is donating her time, and is encouraging other local tradespeo-ple to do the same.

Cihelka started off looking at the house for a small renovation, but once she saw Nicolas, and learned about the entire situation, she wanted to do more.

“I have three sons myself. They’re all very active in sports and living quote-unquote normal lives,” she said.

“I looked at little Nicolas and it kind of broke my heart. He’s a delight. He’s just the sweetest little guy.”

The family needs a sit-to-stand power chair valued at $30,000, and an above-ground pool for daily water therapy.

They will renovate the house with ramps, lifts, wheelchair accessible rooms and create a sanctuary where Nicolas can wheel himself around, and get the treatments he needs.

“We’re planning on a lifetime

with him,” said his father. With the drawings finalized, the energy and excitement of Nicolas Nation is growing, but the group is still in need of more local businesses and skilled volunteers to make their plans a reality, said Cihelka. As-sistance is needed in the areas of excavation, demolition, framing, concrete, insulation, electrical, plumbing, flooring, roofing, mill-work, drywall, painting, interior and exterior finishing, gutters, sprinklers, siding and landscaping.

On Sunday, they will host an open house and barbecue from 1-4 p.m., and guests can look at the drawings and determine whether they would like to be involved.

“We’ve had some amazing people come forward,” said Schwuchow.

“It’s a hard thing to ask for help. But we’ve had to do whatever we can to help our boy.”

So far Nicolas Nation has raised $52,000 of their goal of $300,000.

“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity and the kindness of the community,” said Schwuchow.

“There’s still a big thing to accom-plish here.”

Anyone interested in attending Sunday’s open house should e-mail Cihelka at [email protected] or [email protected]. For more about the campaign visit A Boy Named Nicolas on Face-book or aboynamednicolas.ca.

Ridge Meadows RCMP made a small dint in the street drug supply after stopping a Vancouver couple on 203rd Street and Dewdney Trunk Road, Friday.

Police seized what they suspect to be crack co-caine, powder cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin from a man and a woman. Charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking are being recommended against the couple from Vancouver.

Police said they seized a little less than half a gram of heroin and several green pills that they sus-pect to be fentanyl.

There were also 11 packs of cocaine, individ-ually wrapped, working out to about three grams.

“Are we talking pounds or kilograms? No we’re not, but when they’re all individually wrapped like that, this is indications of a dial-a-doper going out and making a delivery,” said RCMP civilian me-dia spokesman Dan Her-branson.

He said fentanyl that can be manufactured as a synthetic heroin, but is 100 times more powerful and dangerous.

“You’re putting your life in the hands of a back-yard chemist. Do they really know what they’re doing? Well that’s always up for debate at the best of times.”

He added that fentanyl can be absorbed through the skin. “You don’t have to ingest it with a needle or smoking. You can just put it in your hand and it will absorb into your blood stream.”

According to the coro-ner, from January to May in B.C. this year there have been 54 fentanyl-related deaths. In Metro Vancou-ver last month alone, 12 people have died.

Police remove street barrierThe gas was not lit,

and one of the camp residents tried to dilut-ed it with a jug of water. Another sprayed it with a fire extinguisher, and they called 9-1-1.

Dr. Liz Zubek, a fam-ily physician with a clinic right across the street from the camp, made a posting on the Maple Ridge Council Watch Facebook group that pointed the finger at residents of the street.

She said there was a party at a residence, and the people there blocked the street with a truck and pylons, not allowing traffic to get through to the camp. The RCMP were called to have the barricade removed.

Dan Herbranson, the civilian spokesman for the Ridge Meadows RCMP, confirmed that police attended and “certainly there was an odour of gasoline in the area.”

He said police are aware of “ongoing hos-tility” directed at the camp residents.

While the immediate neighbours are most ef-fected by the tent city, they are not the only ones growing impatient

with the situation.“It’s not just the neigh-

bours. Quite a number of citizens are upset with the camp being there,” he said.

So far, there are no charges.

“The investigation is definitely ongoing.”

He said the dumping of gasoline did not ap-pear to be necessarily connected to the Rally for Community Safety which was held on Sat-urday.

“We monitored the march, and it was very peaceful. Everyone was

respectful,” said Her-branson.

Salvation Army Car-ing Place executive di-rector Darrell Pilgrim was not aware of the gas spill, but has heard about the threats from vigilantes.

“We’re certainly con-cerned with some of the comments we’ve heard about and read on social media,” he said. “Our desire is that everyone involved would be treat-ed with respect.”

Some negative com-ments have been direct-ed at the Caring Place,

and Pilgrim said they are uninformed. Of the hundreds of people in poverty whom the Sal-vation Army helps ev-ery day, the majority do not live on the streets, he said.

The Sally Ann sent 45 kids to summer camp last week, and is put-ting together 250 pack-ages of school supplies in its backpack cam-paign.

“We are here to help anybody in our com-munity that is in need – anybody at all,” said Pilgrim

Voters will know by next Tuesday who will be the candidate trying to retain the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge seat for Ste-phen Harper’s Conserva-tive party.

Mike Murray, cur-rently executive-assistant to present MP Randy Kamp, and MLA Marc Dalton, are competing for the right to run in the Oct. 19 election.

The candidate will be decided during a vote at the nomination meeting, this Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Westview secondary, 20905 Wicklund Ave. The candidates will both speak starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by voting from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, Murray said both Kamp and pre-vious MP Grant McNally have endorsed him as the candidate.

Murray also feels he has the advantage be-cause he’s been working for Kamp, who’s retiring, for the last several years.

“It’s going to be close, there’s no doubt about it,” said Murray.

He said about 1,500 members are eligible to vote in the nomination.

And if he wins that, Murray said he’s ready to start campaigning.

“I’m ready. We’ve been waiting a long time, so we’re ready to hit the ground running.”

However, Dalton says he has the lead in the numbers of members who are supporting him.

“I’m feeling pretty good about it.”

It’s just a matter of en-suring that supporters get to the meeting in or-der to cast their vote.

Murray said if he wins the nomination, he has a core group of about 15 to run the election cam-paign and “hundreds of people ready to volun-teer.”

The NDP named Bob D’Eith as its candidate for Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge last May, while last week, the Green party named Peter Tam.

The Liberals are also expected to name a can-didate soon.

Murray said with the long campaign period, each candidate in the riding will be allowed to spend more than $150,000.

He says he’s more pre-pared than Dalton for the nomination and that if he wins, he has a lot of support in the commu-nity.

He expects Conserva-tives to be re-elected as the government.

“The message of a safer Canada and a strong economy is the message we want to put forward.

He added he wants to stay on track with that message throughout the campaign.

Dalton, elected as a Liberal representative for the provincial riding of Maple Ridge-Mission, is currently sitting as an independent while he pursues the nomination. If not successful, he’ll return to the provincial Liberals.

Dalton ran unsuc-cessfully for the Con-servatives in the 2006 federal election in Burn-aby-New Westminster, losing to the NDP.

Related to the federal election, my-as-geeky-

as-it-sounds book club is half way through “Enlightenment 2.0,” by University of Toronto philosophy professor Joseph Heath.

The title premise is the 18th Century French Revolution, a Version 1 effort toward political reform – and it is cur-rently time for another attempt to re-boot the system.

Though Heath has yet to call for Madame la Guillotine’s return, he does argue that modern social and media environments prioritize “gut feel truthiness” over more mentally challenging processes of reasoning.

Thus, current election campaigns are fought via appeal to voter’s hearts rather than minds.

Hence, today’s political discourse is in-sanely partisan rather than even moderately informative.

A debate took place when exactly? However, I was surprised to find myself

isolated from the predominantly professo-rial club members upon suggesting the last 20 years in politics has been more blip than trend. Because, whether due to optimism or naivete, I want to believe humanity is pro-gressing. And, self-indulgent though it may be, to continue writing articles and hosting

public forums, I need to feel there is some point to it.

Unfortunately, all of the reading group and local cognoscenti I’ve consulted, and frankly most of my career experiences, disagree.

To illustrate, one of my first jobs after undergrad was as a new-car salesman. That lasted less than a month and a half because – and without disparaging that industry’s professionals – my process of providing information proved not to be what most prospective purchasers sought. Instead, and as the dealership’s older hands advised, it was far more lucrative to simply support shop-per suppositions about the ‘right vehicle for them.’

Offering up new (much less differing) details only complicated customer efforts to make a decision. Or, put another way, gas mileage doesn’t matter when buying now makes you feel more attractive, more ac-cepted and more successful today.

And so it is with this election. Who cares how ridiculous it is for the

Liberal Party to promise “real change” when Justin Trudeau is so photogenic?

Or whether the NDP’s promises are even possible in a Trans-Pacific Partnership world when Tom Mulcair is the only “middle class” leader?

Or even why a Conservative Party, un-interested in curtailing theft of tax dollars by Senators they appointed, when Stephen Harper promises to cut taxes?

Not that I’m much better insofar as (pend-ing a now overdue counter from my global

warming critics) incorporating Elizabeth May and the Green Party in the above list seems more hassle than productive.

That said, though, my hostility about turn-ing our economic and social future over to the ‘most popular senior’ does highlight a key vote motivator for myself.

The plain truth is that the power brokers behind today’s parties are pretty much unin-terested about our little corner of the world. Fates will have been determined long before we’ve finished voting and the eastern consen-sus is we Lotus-landers are too busy hiking and sailing to stay involved or mad for long.

Which in turn makes the Green Party’s pledge to end “whipped votes” a clarion call above normal campaign din. I mean not even the most ardent supporters believe every campaign promise will be delivered: Mulroney promised to “end patronage”; Chretien to “eliminate the GST”; Harper to “balance the budget.”

And every one of them was elected to a second term despite not even really attempt-ing to deliver.

Fine, things happen, circumstances change, new decisions are required. But this makes it all the more reason to (as I have done since running myself in 1993) cast my vote for the best local candidate, regardless of affiliation.

And I’ll keep doing so until either my business provides sufficient fish to teach new tricks to already trained seals, or I come to terms with a different understanding of human nature than I choose to maintain at present.

Ban the breedIngrid RiceNews Views

Question of theweek:

Is 78 days too long for a federal election campaign?Yes: 77% – No: 23%

This week’s question: Should the province ban pit bulls?

@ Online poll: cast your vote at mapleridgenews.com, or e-mail your vote and comments to [email protected]

A pit bull had to be killed to free its grip on the arm of a 15-year-old newspaper carrier in Maple Ridge two weeks ago.

A week later, a pit bull killed a Pomeranian in Pitt Meadows.

A year prior, a different pit bull killed another small dog in Pitt Meadows.

The more recent events reignited a call to ban pit bulls in B.C., as was done 10 years ago in Ontario.

Since, reported pit bull bites have dropped, from 168 in the last year before the ban to 13 in 2014.

The Ontario legislation forbids the breed-ing and importation of pit bulls and associated breeds. It requires them to be neutered, and to be leashed and muzzled in public.

Any dog can bite. But not all of them need to have their throats cut just to let go.

The damage pit bulls can and do inflict is far greater than that of most other breeds, and as Ontario’s stats showed, they do so more often.

Before the ban in Ontario, the bite rate of pit bulls was twice as high as the second most ag-gressive breed – German shepherds.

Even responsible owners can’t always prevent pit bulls from attacking.

We don’t expect pit bull defenders to quit campaigning in support of their beloved pets.

But the data on banning the breed is compel-ling.

Dangerous dog bylaws don’t prevent attacks. And contrary to the SPCA’s view, we think it’s

easier to control the breed than trying to influ-ence pit bull owners.

Anything that reduces such vicious attacks, as witnessed locally, is welcome.

Safety first.

We would like to extend our gratitude, first and foremost, to all the neighbours who came running to help our daugh-ter, Sarah Metzner, from as far as a block away.

The response was awesome and it was very comforting to know that we live in a community of people willing to sacrifice their own safety for another.

We would like to thank the fabu-lous staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital, as we received top-notch treatment in the emergency room. The pediatric staff members were so caring and kind. They made the treatments much easier to manage, with their compassion and thoughtfullness.

And special thanks to our doctors, who fought to ensure our daughter was pro-tected from any further complications.

We also would like to thank the staff at

Abbotsford Regional Hospital, where the surgery was performed.

Our hospital workers are truly amazing and a credit to our community.

Finally, we would like to thank the RCMP officers who attended.

We know there is some dissention re-garding the manner of their handling of this incident.

Let us be clear, we stand in full sup-port of any measures the Ridge Meadows RCMP felt were necessary to get that beast off of our daughter.

We believe their actions were directed solely for the purpose of her protection and we thank them deeply for their ser-vice, knowing what it must have cost them.

As for the comments of the dog’s owner in this paper, we are deeply disappointed to read the latest article, which seems to indicate that their dog’s well-being was a priority over my daughter’s safety.

Under no circumstances do these peo-ple get to abdicate their sole responsibil-ity in this matter.

It should have been to engage in proper handling techniques to counter the ag-gression.

They assert that the police should bet-ter know how to deal with an aggressive dog.

The reality is, police did the best they

could to mitigate the damage that should never have occurred, and would not have occurred had the owners better known how to deal with their aggressive dog.

At its most base level, these owners failed their dog, and our daughter paid the price, is still paying the price, and will continue to pay the price for a long time to come.

‘In a heartbeat’Editor, The News:Re: Pit bull’s death questioned (The

News, July 31).I want to commend the RCMP of-

ficers who arrived on scene of this de-fenseless young girl who was savagely attacked by these people’s pit bull.

They have the gall to criticize the  way the police handled it? They ran away from the scene and could not control this brutal attack by their dog.

If that was my child, I would have  done anything to put that animal down in a heartbeat.

The SPCA should not be judging the RCMP  here.

Thank-you  Ridge Meadows RCMP.Bob McKee

Editor, The News:Yes, 78 days for an election campaign is way too long and

will cost us the taxpayer/voter more millions of dollars thanks to Stephen Harper.

Every time I see one of those Harper attack ads, I know why I won’t be voting for the Harpercons.

I now have to go out and find a candidate to vote for as I will be going out to vote.

Ban practicableChris Tan · Re: ‘Ban the deed, not the breed’ (mapleridgenews.com).“We feel you ban the deed, not the breed.” If Moriarty can come up with a 100 per cent foolproof method of banning the deed, then not banning the breed is practicable. Until that happens, innocent children, people and other pets will continue to be maimed and murdered by well-inteneded deed-ban fails.

www.mapleridgenews.com - THE NEWS -- Friday, August 14, 2015 -- 9

A 29-year-old man known to the RCMP died of a suspected drug over-dose late last week in his Maple Ridge apartment.

RCMP civilian media spokesman Dan Her-branson said police re-sponded to a call at the Rio apartment complex, located at 120th block of 228th St. at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6.

Herbranson said drugs were believed to have played a role and foul play has been ruled out.

Herbranson said they

are waiting for the toxi-cology reports before they can determine the exact cause of death.

Thursday’s death was followed by a rash of fen-tanyl overdoes in Vancou-ver on Sunday. According to the Vancouver Police department, there were 16 suspected fentanyl overdoes in a 24-hour period.

Erin Gibson, the region-al harm reduction coordi-nator for Fraser Health, said they are seeing more cases of adverse reac-

tions and death across the province because of the potency of fentanyl.

According to Fraser Health, fentanyl is a syn-thetic narcotic that is 50-100 times more toxic than other opioids. It is often mixed with other drugs like heroin.

“What we’re seeing is the increase in the pres-ence of fentanyl in all sorts of substances,” she said. “So we’re promot-ing awareness of what an overdose looks like, how to respond, and the im-

portance of calling 911,” she said.

Gibson said Fraser Health also distributes take-home naloxone kits in hopes of re-ducing overdoses.

Signs of a fentanyl overdose include severe sleepiness, slow heartbeat, trouble breathing, slow or shallow breathing, snor-ing, clammy skin and trouble with walking or talking.

Immediate use of an opioid antagonist, such as naxolone can reverse the effects of fentanyl.

The B.C. SPCA is sat-isfied that Ridge Mead-ows RCMP were justi-fied in killing a pit bull that had its jaws locked on a paper carrier’s arm, and did so without sub-jecting the animal to ex-cessive cruelty.

Whether police used a knife in killing the dog, as witnesses relayed to the dog’s owner and wrote in social media accounts of the inci-dent, remains ambigu-ous.

RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop has said no knife was used.

The dog attacked 15-year-old paper car-rier Sarah Metzner on

July 24, as she worked her route on 117th Avenue, near Thomas Haney Secondary. It broke through a screen door to get at her, and locked its jaws on her hand. Her injuries re-quired surgery.

Marcie Moriarty, the chief prevention and enforcement officer for the SPCA in the prov-ince, said she could not confirm whether there were knife wounds on the dog’s neck.

Moriarty said the dog was buried by the own-ers, but its body was ex-humed at the request of the victim’s parents, so they could be reassured the animal did not have rabies. Although the lo-cal branch of the SPCA

said the dog would be examined to determine cause of death, provin-cial spokesperson Mo-riarty said the cause of death is not relevant, because the police had a “lawful excuse” for their actions.

The dog was attacking a person when they ar-rived at the scene, and police determined that they could not safely kill the dog with a firearm in the residential situa-tion.

Eyewitnesses said the police twice cut the dog, and used a makeshift muzzle to try and con-trol it. They also had of-ficers kneeling on it, us-ing their body weight to pin it down. By the time the struggle was over,

say RCMP, the dog was dead.

That is consistent with an eyewitness account that said the police used a length of cable that had been laying in the yard to strangle the dog.

RCMP civilian spokesman Dan Her-branson said the media should ask the SPCA if it has determined the cause of death. Moriarty said only the police of-ficers who attended the scene know how the dog died.

The RCMP’s comment was they used the level of force required in the circumstances, said Moriarty, and that is ac-cepted by the SPCA.

“There is no open in-vestigation,” she said.

Boot mayors off TLink?

B y J e f f N a g e lBlack Press

Regional politicians tussled last Friday over whether Metro Vancouver board directors or the mayors’ council should set trans-portation policy if TransLink is reformed, yet again.

Some directors argued the may-ors’ decisions on how to lead the plebiscite Yes campaign led to the defeat of a new sales tax to fund transit, and suggested they resign.

“The mayors’ council is respon-sible for the No vote in a large way, and a lot of it was the robo-calls and the millions of dollars spent,” Richmond Coun. Harold Steves said at the July 31 Metro board meeting. “In the public mind, the best thing they could do is resign.”

The Mayors’ Council on Re-gional Transportation was cre-ated in the province’s 2007 reor-

ganization of TransLink when elected officials were turfed off the board and replaced with unelected directors. Mayors were stripped of any power over TransLink and left mainly with decisions on tax hikes.

The mayors’ council, mean-while, has already threatened to quit its role in TransLink un-

less the province grants them more control and a new funding source.

That’s why an urgent push is now on for Metro Vancouver regional district to take on a ma-jor transportation planning role, which would mesh well with its responsibility for regional land use planning.

NEWS FILESDiscussion continues endlessly about TransLink.

Some say Metro Vancouver should run transit

He favours expand-ing the underground parking lot beneath the Leisure Centre, which currently has 500 stalls, as part of redeveloping the core area.

Parking will always be an issue, said Coun. Craig Speirs.

“We’ve got lots of parking.”

But it’s important to ensure that there’s not too much parking be-cause that creates too much asphalt.

He suggests that a long-term goal would be to build a parkade on city land near the Haney Place Mall.

However, concen-trating any new stalls into one new parkade, would be too inconve-nient for shoppers be-cause it would be too far from other parts of downtown, says Bob Jones, president of the downtown parking so-ciety.

Speirs would also like to see some relaxation and creativity in park-ing in order to make it easier to shop.

“You want people to stay in the downtown for a few hours.”

He’d also like to see the city to offer free parking in its parkade beneath the Leisure Centre on Saturdays.

“The public relations and the goodwill and the benefit to the down-town would be im-

mense.”Downtown Maple

Ridge Business Im-provement Associa-tion executive-director Ineke Boekhorst said there’s enough parking in the downtown, even when Walmart opens in Haney Place Mall this fall.

What has to improve is informing people where those parking stalls are in order to make it easier to stay down-town. Better signage with maps, diagrams and explanation is key.

In European cities, big signs make it clear at the entrances to downtown where people can park.

“We know there are more than 6,000 spots in the downtown.

“It’s just that they’re not in the right place.”

Boekhorst says there are exactly 6,790 park-ing stalls within the BIA boundaries, including staff parking.

And she notes that parking anywhere on Maple Ridge streets, except for the under-ground parking lot be-

low the Leisure Centre, is free.

Boekhorst said one-hour parking limits are needed to ensure there’s space outside restau-rants or other business-es so people can move in and out.

“It’s still free parking. Go downtown Vancou-ver, you can’t park any-where.”

The city, BIA and the parking society should cooperate, said Jones.

“The thing is, a more comprehensive plan has to be done.”

Plenty of parking, says BIAParking from Front

14 -- Friday, August 14, 2015 -- THE NEWS - www.mapleridgenews.com

A lot of you have been converting your gardens over to low-maintenance perennials with the idea of them being

at least moderately drought tolerant. The reasons vary from just being tired of

constantly watering those scorched azaleas and rhododendrons to summer flower displays that don’t seem to last in the heat.

Regardless of the catalyst, it is obvious that our new normal of hot, dry summers and the subsequent water restrictions are changing the way we garden.

Add to this the fact that we are all busy with careers and family, and the last thing we want is to come home to a ‘crispy’ landscape.

The one benefit that herbaceous perennials provide us is that even when the weather gets the best of them, most can be cut back and will happily regrow fresh foliage.

The same can’t be said for the many scorched broadleaf evergreens and hedging cedars we see haunting our neighborhoods, as this visible damage is usually apparent for years to come and doesn’t always recover.

In fact, barring not watering newly planted perennials, these resilient plants should give you years, if not decades of reliable foliage and flowers if they are properly placed.

The one proviso being that while our summers may be drier, the same cannot be said about fall to early spring – so you need to factor in those winter rains and drainage concerns before deciding which perennials to plant.

That said, there are a handful of these which can tolerate both the temporarily waterlogged winter soils and the summer heat, and although they may not look their best in July, they will still live to see another season.

Among these are Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), daylilies (Hemerocallis), our native Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) and pigsqueak (Bergenia cordifolia).

The other buying trend I have noticed of late is that ornamental grasses seem to be enjoying a revival of sorts, as many of you have noticed that these have been faring quite well despite the dry weather.

I came to the same conclusion after water restrictions prevented me from using the sprinklers and I saw how the established Japanese silver grass cultivars (Miscanthus sinensis) continued to thrive in the pond garden at work, although most have grown much shorter than in previous years. The Joe-Pye weed (Eupatorium purpureum) is also looking in prime form despite many perennials around it scorching out with the lack of irrigation.

Many drought tolerant perennials have several attributes in common, including thick succulent foliage which stores moisture (sedum), deep tap root systems (butterfly weed/Asclepias tuberosa) or hairy

silver foliage (Artemisia) that helps reduce transpiration from sun exposure. A few drought tolerant ornamental grasses to consider include panicum ‘Heavy Metal’, Mexican feather grass (Stipa tenuissima), calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, Pampas grass (Cortaderia), Festuca ‘Elijah Blue’, Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’ and blue oat grass (Helictotrichon).

Some attractive companion perennials for these grasses that are equally drought resistant are Russian sage (Perovskia), Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’, Sedum ‘Purple emperor’ or ‘Autumn joy’, red Valerian (Centranthus ruber), Gaillardia (blanket flower), Echinops ritro (globe

thistle), Yarrow (Achillea) and many Euphorbias.

For those of you with smaller scale needs, such as edging plants or rock garden specimens, there are also plenty of reliable choices – from the starry blooms of Hardy ice plants (Delosperma), to the bright gold needle-like foliage of sedum ‘Angelina’, the delicate pink or white flowers of creeping baby’s breath (Gypsophila repens) and the wispy silver foliage of Artemisia ‘Silver Mound’.

So as you can see, drought stricken doesn’t mean that you need have a boring garden.

Podium performances at Games

ContributedReid Muller runs to a second-place finish in the 800m race at the Western Canada Summer Games under way in Alberta.

Team BC is the team to beat at the 2015 Western Canada Sum-mer Games under way in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and athletes from Maple Ridge and Pitt Mead-ows are helping to up the medal count.

B.C. enjoyed a podium sweep of the women’s hammer throw with Natasha Akbarizadeh (Maple Ridge), Camryn Rogers (Richmond), Chanell Botsis (Co-quitlam) taking the gold, silver and bronze respectively.

Akbarizadeh was a heavy fa-vourite, having won two straight national junior championships in the event.

“I was feeling really confident in the circle,” said Azkbarizadeh.

“Right before my last throw Camryn had her last throw and she threw a 54.14, so I knew I had to step up my game! I was able to throw one just past her. It was

nerve racking but I’m glad she was there to help push me.”

Still on the track, Pitt Meadows high school track star Reid Muller won the silver medal in the 800m race in a time of 1:52.45.

Team BC women’s cyclists swept the podium Monday for the fourth-consecutive day. Em-ily Handford (West Vancouver), Kelsey MacDonald (Pitt Mead-ows) and Stephanie Denroche (Whistler) finished one, two, and three respectively in general clas-sification.

In the canoe and kayak events on Monday, the B.C. men swept the podium for the second day in K-1 5000m with Team B.C. flag bearer Alex Brent of Dewdney, a member of the Maple Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club finish-ing first, and teammates Matthew Kholer and Seb Sorescu, both of Maple Ridge finishing second and third respectively.

So far Team BC has brought home 169 medals – 77 ggold, 51 silver and 41 bronze.

There are 10 days of competi-tion in 19 sports.

Swimmer Nathan Stein of Maple Ridge has won two medals at the 2015 Toronto Para-pan American Games.

He took silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in the 50m freestyle in the games, which run Aug. 7-15.

Brazil’s Andre Bra-sil, the world record holder in the 100m fly event, won the race in a Parapan Am record

time of 56.72.“I was really trying

to reel him in at the 75-metre mark,” said Stein, who has a condi-tion called osteocho-dritis discans which has resulted in him having 11 surgeries on his leg. “I started to seize up.

“The silver is always good, especially on home soil. It was not quite the time I wanted but it was still a good race,” he said.

After being injured in 2013, the 23-year-old has continued on the recovery trail in 2015 when he qualified for

the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Toronto Games.

At the Speedo Can Am Para-swimming Championships in To-ronto Stein won the S10 50-metre and 100-m freestyle plus was sec-ond in the 100-m but-terfly. Less than a week later Stein finished third in the 50-m freestyle at the British Para-Swim-ming International Meet in Glasgow.

Ridge Meadows Bur-rards lacrosse player Megan Kinna was part of a historic win in Ed-inburgh, Scotland, as Team Canada’s 2015 U-19 Women’s Field team upset reigning world champions Team USA 9-8.

The Americans were on a 7-0 streak and had beaten their oppo-nents by an average of

16 goals. The U.S. had beaten Canada 15-9 in their tournament open-er on July 23.

But in their first gold medal game in the U-19 women’s national team history, Canada pulled off the upset.

Kinna will play for the Northwestern Wildcats of the NCAA in Chi-cago after she graduates from Samuel Robertson Technical at the end the 2016 school year.
