After a hot, dry summer and a very wet September, our containers have paid the price.

Tired, stressed plants are showing up ev-erywhere, and now it’s time for a change.

As summer gives way to fall, it’s an opportunity to add a fresh autumn look around our homes to lift our spirits just like the refresh-ing fall breezes.

We have never had a better se-lection of plants to create an excit-ing new look in our fall containers.

Through innovation, our indus-try has done an amazing job of putting together a grouping of new and old plants that thrive in fall and winter conditions.

From bergenias and new ‘hot’ fo-liage heucheras to evergreen sag-es, lysimachias, vincas, sedums, tiarellias, ajugas, euphorbias and colourful ivies, there is an amazing showcase of container plants to blend beautifully with winter pansies and violas.

Evergreen ornamental grasses have never been as front and center as they are today, and their soft fl owing look provides the charm we have been missing in our container displays.

From the new varieties of carex, like ‘Everest’ and ‘Strike It Rich’, to the bronze stems of Carex testacae (Zone 6) and the new fescues, like ‘Golden Toupe’, there is a wealth of colour and textures available today like never before.

Even the pure black Mondo Grass (Ophi-opogon ‘Nigrescens’ (Zone 6), surrounded with the silver foliage of Dusty Miller ‘Cirrus’ or pure white violas, offers an opportunity to create a new and stunning look in fall containers.

Funky trees and shrubs can be real eye-catchers in containers as well. Anything with an unusual form or shape gets my vote.

The amazing Cotoneaster corokia (Zone 7) looks like sagebrush gone wild. Tall, thin Cedrus atlantica (Zone 5) and C.a. ‘Glauca Pendula’ add a blue, tall, slender look to add that all important vertical element.

Weeping beech, both the green Fagus sylvatica ‘Pendula’ (Zone 5) and the Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea Pendula’ (Zone 5), pro-vide great form and balance to any planter. For a tall, thin look, try the golden and green Irish yew, Taxus baccata fastigiata (Zone 5).

All of these trees not only add form to

your containers, but they also combine so well with all other plants.

Broadleafed plants add the fulliness and colourful fi ll often missing in fall contain-ers.

My all-time favourite is ‘Heav-enly Bamboo’, Nandina domes-tica, especially with so many new forms available today.

The deep rich red of ‘Summer Sunrise’ (Zone 6) provides a colour ‘wow’ for anything pink, gold or silver.

The compact forms, N.d. ‘Gulf Stream’, ‘Harbour Dwarf’ and ‘Moon Bay’ (Zone 6) are nice to blend with ornamental grasses and evergreen perennial foliage plants like heucheras.

Leucothoe has for too long been underutilized in container work.

The compact Leucothoe ‘Scarletta’ (Zone 6), with its bronze new growth that turns brilliant scarlet in late fall, is one of those ‘wow’ plants.

Callunas and ericas, especially the ones with colourful foliage like Erica ‘Mary Helen’ and ‘Golden Starlet‘, add both fl ower and foliage, and the ericas will hold those fl owers through winter.

The new long blooming ‘Bud Bloomers’ are also a welcome addition.

The containers themselves are where we all need to kick it up a notch. If the container doesn’t say ‘wow’, why are you using it?

Tall and thin or low and round are the most pleasing forms. Everything in the middle is just ‘the same old’.

Low containers look great on pedestals too.

If you can fi nd antiques that fi t the style of your patio, so much the better.

Remember, as winter approaches, that frost can split clay and poorly fi red ceram-ics.

Also make sure to use very well drained soils by adding 1/3 fi ne bark mulch.

Most of all have fun. Reach out a little with your fall look and create the ‘wow’ look you’ll be sure to appreciate and enjoy all fall and winter.

Remember too, that as any plant passes its prime, quickly replace it with another.

As most of these plants are perennials, they will easily fi nd a home in your garden.

We all need a late winter

pick-me-up with some

reliable colour that can

withstand nature’s sometimes

fi ckle mood swings. Late cool

spells and heavy frosts (as well as

snow) are still a possibility, so it’s

important to choose early March

outdoor colour carefully.

So, what are the best cool-lov-

ing plants for a hot display? By far

and away, the top performers are

violas and pansies. Pansies may

be old fashioned favourites, but

the many new colours and variet-

ies have certainly kept them up-

to-date and interesting.

My latest favourite is the new

Ultima Morpho, a European

Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner.

It’s a distinctive bi-colour with

mid-blue upper petals and bright

yellow lower petals. Talk about

standing out in a crowd. I used

Morpho in our winter planters,

and it added a much needed lift to

the more muted tones of the other

winter plants.

Wallfl owers are more suited to

late May or June gardens, but I’ve

got my eye on the new dwarf va-

riety, called Fragrant Sunshine,

which, unlike most others, is

perennial and will repeat bloom

year after year. In other words,

with Fragrant Sunshine we can

enjoy early fragrance and colour

and long continuous blooming. I

watched them over the winter in

cold greenhouses, and even their

foliage is beautiful.

Don’t forget their cousins,

Bowles Mauve and its variegated

form that have great perfume and

bloom well into late spring and

summer.At this time of year, the soft co-

lours of primroses blend beauti-

fully with the bronze foliage of

bergenias (Zone 3), heucheras

(Zone 5) and heucherellas (Zone

5), and the reds, bronzes and deep

yellows need silvers, like Dusty

Miller, around them to create a re-

freshing spring look.

The amazing Heuchera Green

Spice is magic with them too, as

is the wonderful Tiarella Forest

Frost (Zone 5).

If you look carefully at this time

of year, you can fi nd some of the

early Wanda primulas throw-

ing out the odd fl ower here and

there. Remember that today we

have the newer seedling varieties

from England in a wide range of

colours accenting those burgundy

leaves. The white and yellow Wandas

are my favourites because they

look so rich with any back up

foliage. They are great garden va-

rieties too, unlike so many of the

big fl owered acaulis varieties we

see today. They do best in partial

shade and if you can, blend them

with four inch pots of the orna-

mental grass, Carex morrowii

Variegata.This combination is beautiful in

light shade under trees.

The amazing early blooming

varieties of English daisies, like

Galaxy, are a true bonus for early

colour. Once properly hardened off, they

are amazing. Either planted by

themselves or spotted in among

white winter heather or Carex

morrowii Variegata, the reds,

pinks and whites of these small-

fl owered button daises scream

spring. They are the way to go.

To make your early displays

stand out, you need a good sized

accent plant, complemented by

enough smaller ones to create

an effect that makes everything

jump. The good news is that many of

these plants are perennials and

as the seasons progress, they will

keep these spots going all year

round with the help of other ac-

cent colours.

These plants are the stuff that

great gardens and containers are

made of. They’re not just a momentary

splash – they’re a colour invest-

ment and are well worth the effort

to fi nd them.

If there is one trend

that has really

caught my atten-

tion of late, it’s the

vast number of young

couples and families

looking to grow their

own herbs, fruits and

vegetables.

From what I can

tell, it is a completely

organic phenomena as

this demographic is cer-

tainly not the garden

magazine-reading type

– they just want access

to fresh food.

The two biggest limitations they face

is a lack of space (due to smaller urban

lots) and plant knowledge. They are easy

to spot at the garden centre because they

usually ask so many questions, which is a

good thing.

So I thought I’d dedicate an article to

help inspire these young urban farmers.

It involves a lot of name-dropping, so you

will have to excuse the cluttered, albeit

informative, nature of this piece.

• Fruit trees have but two shortfalls

– they occupy a great deal of space and

often shade the ground below, making it

diffi cult to grow other edibles. So choose

carefully. ‘Lapins’ is by far the best coastal cherry,

with its big meaty fruit and split resis-

tance – although for smaller gardens you

might want to consider the genetic dwarf

‘Compact Stella’ – both are self-fertile.

‘Bosc’ and ‘Bartlett’ are good choices for

traditional pears due to their prolifi c and

self-fruitful nature. Despite their exotic

reputation, Asian pears are no harder to

grow than their pyriform counterparts,

but they do crop better with a cross-polli-

nator – ‘20th Century’ and ‘Chojuro’ make

a good pairing.

Quince (Cydonia oblonga) is another

lesser-known fruit tree with golden pear-

like fruit (some cultivars are round) that

is virtually inedible raw, but when cooked

transforms pies and pork dishes into deli-

cacies and makes my favourite jelly.

If I could only have one plum tree in my

yard it would defi nitely be the self-fertile

‘Italian’ prune with its purple egg-shaped

fruit and yellow fl esh – when picked early

it is refreshingly tart, while later crops

are quite sweet, suitable for preserves and

baking.Apple selection can be a bit challeng-

ing with the choice often being between

disease resistance (‘Redfree’, ‘Liberty’,

‘Jonafree’) and fl avour – but it is also

important to pay close attention to the

dwarfi ng rootstock.

‘Golden Sentinel’ and ‘Scarlet Sentinel’

are two genetic dwarf apples that grow in

a columnar form – with an average ulti-

mate size of nine feet tall and only three

feet wide. Your other space-saving option

is to espalier (train branches horizontally

on a fl at plane) a young self-fertile apple.

For these purposes I would consider ‘Spar-

tan’, ‘Royal Gala’, ‘Yellow Transparent’

(for sauce) or ‘Golden Delicious’.

Peaches and Nectarines also benefi t

from being espalier trained under a south

or west roofl ine, where they can be kept

dry and free of peach leaf curl, a fungal

disease common on the coast.

‘Frost’ is the most disease resistant

peach and both are self-fertile.

• Where space for fruit trees is lacking,

berries can be a very practical alterna-

tive. Blueberries are some of the easiest

to grow, and can be blended into a mixed

ornamental border where their brilliant

autumn foliage (‘Northland’) can contrib-

ute to the overall display.

Although self-fertile, you will get larger

fruit and bigger crops if you plant several

different varieties to ensure cross-pollina-

tion. A few of my favourite cultivars include

‘Reka’, ‘Blue Crop’, ‘Duke’ and ‘Spartan’.

Although not everbearing, ‘Tulameen’

is still the best raspberry for consistent

heavy crops, large berries and true rasp-

berry fl avour.

Currants (available in red, black, white,

and pink) and gooseberries both do well

here, as does Jostaberry, a thornless

gooseberry x black currant cross.

For strawberries, the everbearing

‘Tristar’ and ‘Albion’ will grow well in

hanging baskets, containers or in ground.

The new golden-leaved alpine straw-

berry, Fragaria vesca ‘Golden Alexandria’,

looks great as an ornamental and kids

adore the bubblegum fl avoured berries.

• Herbs also grow well in containers and

taste so much better than their bulk bin

supermarket counterparts.

For rosemary, ‘Rex’ and ‘Gorizia’ have

lush (easy to chop) fl avourful leaves, while

‘Arp’ is the hardiest to grow outdoors.

Flat leaf parsley is better tasting than

curled, and garlic chives just have that

extra joie de vivre. ‘Tabor’, ‘English’ and

‘Provence’ are the tastiest thymes, while

‘Grower’s Friend’ is the best of culinary

sages. Basils such as ‘Lettuce Leaf’ and ‘Geno-

vese’ make superior pesto and if you use

a lot of cilantro, make several plantings

a few weeks apart to ensure a supply all

summer. • Last but not least are tomatoes and

kale. For tomatoes, try ‘Tumbler’ or ‘Tumbling

Tom Red’ for hanging baskets, ‘Sweet

Million’, or ‘Early Girl’ for containers – ‘La

Roma’ is your best paste tomato, while

‘Lemon Boy’ is a good choice for a low acid

yellow fruit.

Kales, such as ‘Redbor’, can be sown

from mid June to July, for a delicious and

beautiful fall crop.

We all need a late winter

pick-me-up with some

reliable colour that can

withstand nature’s sometimes

fi ckle mood swings. Late cool

spells and heavy frosts (as well as

snow) are still a possibility, so it’s

important to choose early March

outdoor colour carefully.

So, what are the best cool-lov-

ing plants for a hot display? By far

and away, the top performers are

violas and pansies. Pansies may

be old fashioned favourites, but

the many new colours and variet-

ies have certainly kept them up-

to-date and interesting.

My latest favourite is the new

Ultima Morpho, a European

Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner.

It’s a distinctive bi-colour with

mid-blue upper petals and bright

yellow lower petals. Talk about

standing out in a crowd. I used

Morpho in our winter planters,

and it added a much needed lift to

the more muted tones of the other

winter plants.

Wallfl owers are more suited to

late May or June gardens, but I’ve

got my eye on the new dwarf va-

riety, called Fragrant Sunshine,

which, unlike most others, is

perennial and will repeat bloom

year after year. In other words,

with Fragrant Sunshine we can

enjoy early fragrance and colour

and long continuous blooming. I

watched them over the winter in

cold greenhouses, and even their

foliage is beautiful.

Don’t forget their cousins,

Bowles Mauve and its variegated

form that have great perfume and

bloom well into late spring and

summer.At this time of year, the soft co-

lours of primroses blend beauti-

fully with the bronze foliage of

bergenias (Zone 3), heucheras

(Zone 5) and heucherellas (Zone

5), and the reds, bronzes and deep

yellows need silvers, like Dusty

Miller, around them to create a re-

freshing spring look.

The amazing Heuchera Green

Spice is magic with them too, as

is the wonderful Tiarella Forest

Frost (Zone 5).

If you look carefully at this time

see today. They do best in partial

shade and if you can, blend them

with four inch pots of the orna-

mental grass, Carex morrowii

Variegata.This combination is beautiful in

light shade under trees.

The amazing early blooming

varieties of English daisies, like

Galaxy, are a true bonus for early

colour. Once properly hardened off, they

are amazing. Either planted by

themselves or spotted in among

white winter heather or Carex

morrowii Variegata, the reds,

pinks and whites of these small-

fl owered button daises scream

spring. They are the way to go.

To make your early displays

stand out, you need a good sized

accent plant, complemented by

enough smaller ones to create

an effect that makes everything

jump. The good news is that many of

these plants are perennials and

as the seasons progress, they will

keep these spots going all year

round with the help of other ac-

cent colours.

These plants are the stuff that

great gardens and containers are

made of. They’re not just a momentary

splash – they’re a colour invest-

ment and are well worth the effort

to fi nd them.
