    WARNING

To avoid loss of control of processfluid and subsequent personal injury orproperty damage caused by bursting ofpressure-retaining parts, be sure thecylinder pressure does not exceed 80psig in high cycle-rate, fast stroking

    speed, three-way valve applications.

In three-way valve applications where the actuatorfully strokes at a frequency of once per minute or fast-

er, and the stroking speed is rapid (less than 0.5 sec-onds per stroke), there is a possibility that the stemcan fracture at the plug if the actuator cylinder pres-sure is greater than 80 psig. This can cause loss ofcontrol of process fluid and further damage to the ac-tuator. Consideration should be given to the use ofhigh-strength, fatigue-resistant stem materials inthese applications.

This problem appears to be application sensitive, in

particular, water quench applications in steel millswhere stroking speed and cylinder pressure are high. There have been no reported occurrences of this typeof failure in other applications.

    Description

The compact Type 585C and 585CR pneumaticspring-and-piston actuators (figure 1) provide accuratethrottling or on-off control of sliding-stem valves. Bothtypes have a double-acting cylinder requiring air pres-sure for operation. The Type 585C actuator with biasspring action fully retracts the piston stem upon loss ofcylinder pressure, while the Type 585CR actuator withbias spring action fully extends the piston stem uponloss of cylinder pressure. No additional parts are re-quired to convert from one actuator type to the other. Both actuators are available with or without a top-mounted handwheel.

    Installation

    WARNING

To avoid personal injury or propertydamage caused by bursting of pressure-retaining parts, be certain the cylinderpressure does not exceed the limitslisted in table 1. Use pressure-limiting orpressure-relieving devices to preventcylinder pressure from exceeding theselimits.

A Type 585C or 585CR actuator is normally shippedmounted on a valve. Refer to the appropriate valveinstruction manual when installing the valve in thepipeline. If necessary to mount a separately shippedactuator on a valve, perform the procedures describedin the Actuator Mountingportion of this section.

    WARNING

Dropping the actuator and any attachedaccessories and/or valve may cause per-sonal injury and/or equipment damage. For all mounting procedures use an ad-equately sized chain, sling, hoist, orcrane to handle the actuator and any at-tached accessories and/or valve. Usecaution during lifting and handling toprevent slippage, swinging, faultyequipment connections, or suddenshock loads.

    Actuator Mounting

The following procedure describes how to mount aType 585C or 585CR actuator on a push-down-to-close valve so that the piston stem to valve plug stemconnection allows full travel and proper shutoff. Keynumbers referenced in the following steps are shown

    in figures 2 through 6.

    1. If not already removed, remove the stem connector(key 12) by loosening the cap screws (key 14).

    2. Thread the stem connector nuts (keys 13 and 15)onto the valve stem, and run the nuts to the bottom ofthe valve stem threads.

    3. Push the valve plug stem until the valve plug isclosed for push-down-to-close valve plug action.

    4. Place the actuator on the bonnet of the valve andsecure the actuator tightly to the bonnet with the yokelocknut.

    CAUTION

In the following procedure, do not rotatethe valve plug while it is seated sincethis may cause damage to the seatingsurface and thereby allow excessiveleakage. Also, during adjustment, usetools carefully to avoid damaging thevalve plug stem. A damaged valve plugstem could cut the packing and allowleakage.

    Note

When using an actuator with handwheelin the following step to stroke the valveplug, be sure the bypass valve (key 66,figure 3 or 5) is open. Rotating the hand-wheel (key 47, figure 3 or 5) clockwiseextends the actuator stem (key 10); ro-tating the handwheel counterclockwiseretracts the actuator stem.

    5. Perform one of the following procedures (a or b asappropriate):

    a. For a Type 585C actuator (figure 2) withpush-down-to-close valve, manually move thevalve plug to the seated position. Rotate the hand-wheel or apply pressure to the pressure connectionin the cylinder (key 1) until the piston (key 3) andactuator stem (key 10) move down the specifiedtravel. Run the stem connector nut (key 13) up onthe valve stem until it contacts the actuator stem.Back off the handwheel or reduce cylinder pressure

enough to move the actuator stem away from thestem connector nut approximately 1/4-inch. Rotatethe stem connector nut, so it moves up the valvestem, an additional two turns. Rotate the hand-wheel or apply pressure to the pressure connectionin the cylinder (key 1) until the actuator stem (key10) again contacts the stem connector nut. Be sure

the flats on the actuator stem are perpendicular tothe scale indicator web on the yoke (key 6). Adjustthe stem connector nut as necessary, so that theflats on the nut and the actuator stem are parallel.Clamp the actuator stem and stem connector nuttogether with the stem connector (key 12) and thetwo cap screws and hex nuts (keys 14 and 23).Run the hex nut (key 15) up the valve stem andtighten against the stem connector nut (key 13).

    b. For a Type 585CR actuator (figure 4) withpush-down-to-close valve, manually move thevalve plug to the seated position. Run the stemconnector nut (key 13) up the valve stem until itcontacts the actuator stem (key 10). Rotate thehandwheel or apply pressure to the pressure con-nection in the yoke (key 6) to move the actuatorstem (key 10) approximately 1/4-inch away fromthe stem connector nut. Rotate the stem connectornut so that it moves up the valve stem two fullturns. Manually move the valve plug so that thestem connector nut again contacts the actuatorstem. Be sure the flats on the actuator stem areperpendicular to the scale indicator web on theyoke (key 6). Adjust the stem connector nut, asnecessary, so that the flats on the nut and the ac-tuator stem are parallel. Clamp the actuator stem

and stem connector nut together with the stem con-nector (key 12) and the two cap screws and hexnuts (keys 14 and 23). Run the hex nut (key 15) upthe valve stem and tighten it against the stem con-nector nut (key 13).

    6. Cycle the actuator several times to check forproper operation.

    Note

In the following step, make sure the cor-rect travel indicator scale (key 19) is

used per the Parts Listfor the desiredtravel.

    7. If necessary, remove the travel indicator scalescrews (key 18) and reposition the travel indicatorscale (key 19) so that the scale arrow points in thesame direction as the valve plug moves when open-ing. Close the valve. Adjust the scale up or down sothat the stem connector (key 12) indicator lines up withthe closed mark on the scale. Secure the scale withthe scale screws.

    Handwheel Adjustment

Key numbers referenced in the following steps areshown in figure 3 for the Type 585C actuator and infigure 5 for the Type 585CR actuator.

The handwheel assembly on a Type 585C or 585CR

actuator may be used as an adjustable travel stop tolimit full upward or downward travel of the actuatorstem (key 10), or as a manual actuator to fully strokethe valve. When the neutral indicator (key 42) is in theneutral position, travel is not restricted. With clockwisehandwheel (key 47) rotation, the operating nut (key46) is screwed downward, forcing the actuator stem(key 10) down. With counterclockwise rotation, theoperating nut is screwed upward against the hand-wheel stem washer (key 45), pulling the actuator stemup.

    Note

When using an actuator with handwheelto stroke the valve plug or position thetravel stop, be sure the bypass valve(key 66) is open.

    Maintenance

Actuator parts are subject to normal wear and must beinspected and replaced as necessary. The frequencyof inspection and replacement depends on the severityof service conditions. This section provides two sepa-rate procedures, one on Replacing Handwheel Hous-ing O-Ring or Thrust Bearings, and the other on Re-placing Seals, Changing Action, or Changing BiasSpring(s).

For an actuator with handwheel, a grease fitting (key50, figure 3 or 5) is provided on the bearing cover (key38, figure 3 or 5) for periodic bearing lubrication withLubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 24, figure 3 or 5) orequivalent.

    WARNING

Avoid personal injury from sudden re-lease of process pressure. Before per-forming any maintenance operations:

Disconnect any operating lines pro-viding air pressure, electric power, or acontrol signal to the actuator. Be surethe actuator cannot suddenly open orclose the valve.

Use bypass valves or completelyshut off the process to isolate the valvefrom process pressure. Relieve processpressure on both sides of the valve.Drain the process media from bothsides of the valve.

Vent the power actuator loadingpressure and release all bias springcompression force by slowly unscrew-ing the cylinder cover bolting in a criss-cross pattern.

Use lock-out procedures to be surethat the above measures stay in effectwhile you work on the equipment.

Replacing Handwheel Housing O-Ringor Thrust Bearings

Perform this procedure if inspecting or replacing thehandwheel housing O-ring, handwheel thrust bearings,or any other handwheel parts located above the cylin-der (key 1, figure 3 or 5). Inspection or replacement ofthe cylinder O-ring, handwheel stem, or handwheelstem jam nut (key 57, 56, or 52, figure 3 or 5) are cov-ered in the Replacing Seals, Changing Action, orChanging Bias Spring(s)procedure. Key numbers arereferenced in figure 3 for a Type 585C actuator and infigure 5 for a Type 585CR actuator.

    Note

This procedure may be performed with-out removing the cylinder, or yoke (key

1 or 6) from the bonnet of the valve.Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, re-lease pressure from both sides of the valve body, anddrain the process media from both sides of the valve.Shut-off all pressure lines to the power actuator, andrelease all pressure from the actuator. Use lock-outprocedures to be sure that the above measures stay ineffect while you work on the equipment.

    1. Shut off the bypass valve (key 66). Remove thecylinder pressure piping and bypass tubing from thebypass tees (key 68) on the cylinder (key 1).

    2. Turn the handwheel (key 47) in the appropriatedirection so the neutral indicator (key 42) is behind the

NEUTRAL position of the neutral indicator plate(key 37).

    3. Unscrew and remove the neutral indicator cover(key 35).

    4. Remove the handwheel retaining ring, handwheel, and locking key (keys 48, 47, and 65).

    5. Loosen the bearing cover set screws (key 51), andunscrew and carefully remove the bearing cover(key 38).

    8

    6. Remove the handwheel housing O-ring (key 58)and the top set of thrust bearings (key 39).

    7. Since both the handwheel housing (key 36) and theoperating nut (key 46) have left-hand threads, unscrewthe handwheel housing by turning it clockwise off theoperating nut. Carefully remove the detent ball and

detent spring (keys 64 and 63), and remove the bot-tom set of thrust bearings (key 39).

    8. Unscrew the handwheel stem cap screw (key 60)while using a 7/8-inch wrench to hold the handwheelstem (key 56). Remove the handwheel stem washer(key 45), and the operating nut (key 46) with attachedneutral indicator (key 42).

    9. Unscrew the neutral indicator (key 42) counter-clockwise if necessary to separate it from the operat-ing nut (key 46).

    10. If the neutral indicator (key 42) was removed, coatits threads with Loctite No. 242 sealant (key 70) or

equivalent and screw it into the operating nut (key 46).Position the 90-degree elbow of the neutral indicatorso that it will not interfere with the neutral indicatorcover (key 35) when assembled.

    11. If necessary, replace the anti-rotation key (key40), by pushing the key outward from the cylinder (key1) then install the replacement key (key 40) into theanti-rotation hole of the cylinder.

    12. Lubricate the inside surface of the operating nut(key 46) with Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 24) orequivalent. Install the operating nut with the attachedneutral indicator, and the handwheel stem washer (key45), onto the handwheel stem (key 56) and secure

with the handwheel stem cap screw (key 60). Tightenthe cap screw to 125 lbfft (169 Nm).

    13. Place the bottom set of thrust bearings (key 39)on top of the cylinder (key 1). Insert the detent springand ball (keys 63 and 64) into the cylinder.

    14. Install the handwheel housing O-ring (key 58) onthe handwheel housing (key 36). Since both the hand-wheel housing and the operating nut (key 46) haveleft-hand threads, thread the handwheel housing ontothe operating nut by turning it counterclockwise overthe operating nut until the handwheel housing is snugagainst the bottom set of thrust bearings (key 39).

    15. Install the top set of thrust bearings (key 39) overthe handwheel housing (key 36).

    16. Carefully slide the bearing cover (key 38) over thehandwheel housing (key 36) and thread the bearingcover hand tight onto the cylinder (key 1). Secure bytightening the set screws (key 51) to 13 lbfft (18Nm).

    17. Install the locking key, handwheel, and handwheelretaining ring (keys 65, 47, and 48).

    18. Screw the neutral indicator cover (key 35) handtight only onto the handwheel housing (key 36).

    19. Install the bypass tubing with attached bypassvalve (key 66) into the bypass tees (key 68) in the cyl-inder (key 1).

Replacing Seals, Changing Action, orChanging Bias Spring(s)

Key numbers are referenced in figures 2 and 3 for aType 585C actuator and in figures 4 and 5 for a Type585CR actuator.

Isolate the control valve from the line pressure, re-lease pressure from both sides of the valve body, anddrain the process media from both sides of the valve.Shut-off all pressure lines to the power actuator, re-lease all pressure from the actuator, and release all

bias spring compression force by slowly unscrewingthe cylinder cover bolting in a crisscross pattern. Uselock-out procedures to be sure that the above mea-sures stay in effect while you work on the equipment.

For Type 585C actuators with push-only handwheel,be sure the handjack stem is backed out of the cylin-der as far as it will go to relieve any extra spring com-pression.

    1. Remove the cylinder pressure piping. With a hand-wheel construction, perform steps 2. through 10. ofthe Replacing Handwheel Housing O-Ring or ThrustBearingsprocedure.

    Note

In the following step, loosen each cylin-der-to-yoke cap screw a slight amountin turn in a crisscross pattern to keepthe cylinder square with the yoke whilerelieving spring precompression.

    2. While carefully allowing bias spring precompressionto be slowly released, remove the cylinder-to-yoke capscrews and cylinder cover (keys 2 and 1).

    3. Remove the cylinder (key 1). Set the cylinder on aprotective surface to prevent damage to the cylindersurfaces. With a handwheel construction, inspect thecylinder O-ring (key 57) and replace it if necessary, applying Lubriplate MAG-1 lubricant (key 24) or equiv-alent to the replacement O-ring.

    4. Inspect the piston O-ring (key 8) and replace, ifnecessary. If the only further maintenance to be per-formed is replacement of the piston O-ring, skip tostep 11. of this procedure.
