Manly Arts Festival Celebrating creativity on Sydney’s Northern Beaches

WelcomeWelcome to the 2018 Manly Arts Festival. This year we’re coming together to celebrate 25 years of this amazing Festival and the magic of creativity on the Northern Beaches. Once again, our region will be ignited with an eclectic mix of exciting events featuring prominent musicians and visual artists, hosted in a number of venues including artist studios, Manly Art Gallery & Museum, the Creative Space and Glen Street Theatre.

Since 1994, this community-based arts festival celebrates the achievements, dedication and innovation of the Northern Beaches creative community in the fields of visual, musical, film, literary and the performing arts.

Each year, Council joins forces with artists and cultural organisations with the support of local businesses, to develop a creative and entertaining arts program for our residents and visitors. This year you’ll find lots to see, hear and participate in, with a range of creative learning opportunities to explore and enjoy.

Northern Beaches Council is committed to supporting cultural initiatives in our area and genuine opportunities for participation in the creative arts. We are currently developing an Arts & Creativity Strategy and look forward to working with our community on this and providing continuing opportunities in this area.

Octennial: Reg Mombassa & Peter O’Doherty Exhibition The celebrated art of ‘Reg and Pete’ returns to Manly Art Gallery & Museum. The exhibition includes recent and early works featuring Reg Mombassa’s iconic allegorical landscapes and Peter O’Doherty’s studies of deceptively mundane domestic and suburban Australian scenes. The exhibition also includes recent graphic works and is accompanied by unique public programming. Frank Hurley: Photographer & Gardener Exhibition This exhibition casts new light on Frank Hurley’s early professional life (1906-1911) in Sydney and then his later life (around 1948-1962) residing at Collaroy Plateau. Here, he produced photographs and books focussed on Sydney, Sydney Harbour, the Northern

Beaches and the Australian native plants which were his lifelong passion. Kimbriki Studio Open Day Come and meet residency artists, Angela van Boxtel and Fraser the Razor in their studios at the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre. Eramboo Artist Residency: Michelle Perrett Exhibition ‘Porcelain Flowers’ is an exhibition by residency artist Michelle Perrett. Exploring the economic, ornamental and healing narratives of flowers, Michelle uses ceramic techniques to create detailed, handmade sculptures. Her focus is on local plants and the threats which can cause them to die, as well as responding to the cultural relationships with the environment. The Eramboo Artist Residency is a joint initiative of Eramboo and Northern Beaches Council.

Creative Space Open Studios Creative Space in North Curl Curl was launched in 2014 to showcase emerging and established artists while creating a dynamic arts centre for the community to visit. A studio program was developed to further support artists by providing studio space, professional development and networking opportunities. Objects of My Desire: Manly Artist Christine Simpson has created an exhibition of sculptures and multi-media works after investigating iconic Manly locations and transforming them into visual and sonic 2D and 3D landscapes. The exhibition features wall works of reassembled textiles and stitch work, sculptures of transparent coloured pulled glass, and works on paper using pencil, charcoal, chalk pastel, collage and acrylic. Soul Invictus Exhibition An exhibition by Kere M Baker and Andrew Lukic exploring the theme of ‘Soul Invictus’ (defined as the unconquerable soul). Using inspiration from their connections to the Polynesian Islands, the artists explore the concept using abstract landscape themes, tempered with modern interpretations of tribal symbolism. Underground ART Space Open Studio The underground ART space is driven by a love of creativity, and a desire to provide a safe supportive space encompassing many creative fields. There are painters, jewellers, makers, writers and photographers in the open studio at any given time. The creative outlets vary, but the consistency in our 8.5 years is that we’re all like-minded folk, at varying levels from hobbyist to professional, and value each other’s unique and very individual journey. A Textural Inquiry: Jo Neville & Lara Hutton Paper and form artist Jo Neville (current resident artist, Q Station) together with director, stylist and ceramicist Lara Hutton blend their creative minds, aesthetics and love of structural form in a new work ‘A Textural Inquiry’. The artists will use the heritage glasshouse at the Q Station as a central hub and the breathtaking hilltop setting with several surrounding ‘pods’ to showcase paper and ceramic works. Our Stories: Yesterday | Today | Tomorrow Do you remember visiting Manly Fun Pier or diving into Manly Harbour Pool? ‘Our Stories’ offers a creative perspective on our local heritage, encouraging visitors to take a fresh look at our area’s living history and the social, cultural, political and environmental narratives that connect and influence our own stories of belonging and inclusion. This event features an installation by Sydney-based artist Francesca Mataraga, as well as an interactive StoryPod storytelling booth where you can

record your own stories, memories and ideas about the past, present and future of Manly Cove. Racked Angela van Boxtel turns a selection of bicycle racks into sculptural pieces, adding warmth and colour to the suburban landscape with the addition of funky knitted wraps. Greater NSW A solo exhibition by local artist Rachel Carroll celebrating the NSW town of Orange. After a recent journey to Orange, Rachel fell in love with the trees, the vast sunsets and the undulating hills. She also went to great lengths to find and paint the very same tree that Brett Whiteley painted in 1984 in Carcoar; to this day the great yellow willow remains a feature of this former tiny mining town. #1 Dog Trumpet The much loved and travelled band of Reg Mombassa and Peter O’Doherty comes to MAG&M to play an intimate gig. #2 Jen Cloher In recent times, Melbourne-based singer songwriter Jen Cloher has moved from being an underground cult figure in the Australian Indie music scene to becoming an internationally acclaimed and sought after artist. Jen will play an intimate set at MAG&M featuring songs from her new album alongside works made in collaboration with Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett. This show is absolutely unmissable. “A modern day Patti Smith whose brutally honest, politically charged lyrics mark her out as one of the most interesting and important artists of her day.” - The Independent (UK) When: Fri 21 Sept, 7pm

#3 The Pinks “Pinks play the blues… It is also what seven of Australia’s top rock, jazz, blues and country musicians do when they just want to have fun.” – SMH. With a repertoire that runs from Muddy Waters and Little Walter, all the way to Donovan and David Bowie, the Pinks are not a usual blues band. Assembled by the acclaimed jazz bassist Jonathan Zwartz, The Pinks will also include Robert Susz (Dynamic Hepnotics) Brendan Gallagher (Karma County) along with Reg Mombassa and Peter O’Doherty, who gather for a rare performance at MAG&M. Michael Rubbo: Book Talk Join filmmaker and artist, Michael Rubbo on a journey through his life and recently published book, ‘Travels with my Art’. He is also the grandson of famous artist and teacher, Antonio Dattilo Rubbo, who helped found MAGM, and will share insights and interconnections between them. Michael will also talk about his new initiative, Lumenarta which, through a chain of galleries set-up with digital screens, unlocks great paintings and collections from around the world to be enjoyed by regional communities. Creatives Connect Manly Art Gallery & Museum throws open its doors on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Listen to creative talks, engage with artists and build your creative network. Presented by MAG&M Society for members, friends and those interested in connecting to life at the Gallery. In September, join Jaimee Paul (Artist - Illustrator - Teacher – Designer) who shares the story, experiences and benefits of being a part of La Crème Creative Inc, a successful non-for-profit co-working space in Brookvale.

Seeing Saltwater Country: Book Talk Sally Mayman and Dale Kentwell discuss their art practices and collaboration with the people of the Dampier Peninsula, Western Australia. Sonic Moves With a wonderful line up of experimental sounds, the spoken word, noise performances and drawing response invitations, ‘Sonic Moves’ brings the Manly Arts Festival to Dee Why! Come and check out the latest happenings

with this avant-garde experience, curated by Hirofumi Uchino and Christine Simpson. An invited artist will make live drawing responses to the three performances. The audience is also invited to respond to the performances by drawing with their own materials. Sydney Chamber Music Festival 2018: Figuratively Speaking This series of concerts brings together music inspired by the fascinating artworks of Australian painter Robert Dickerson AO (1924 – 2015). Concert 2: Nella and the Paradise of Birds A 40 minute family concert featuring the Sydney Puppet Theatre, Bridget Bolliger on flute and Andrew West on piano in this truly original artistic program. Sydney-based composer Jim Coyle’s stunning set of 12 miniatures for flute and piano, composed and recorded in 2017, is beautifully brought to life as little Nella dreams and imagines a paradise of birds in her puppetry realm. Concert 3: Timeless Arguably Australia’s finest cellist, the New York born and Perth based musician Michael Goldschlager joins flautist Bridget Bolliger with the internationally acclaimed British pianist Andrew West in a remarkable program of chamber music throughout the ages, performing works by J.S.Bach, Haydn, Debussy and Martinu. Dedicated in part to the 100th anniversary of the passing of the great Claude Debussy, ‘Timeless’ will also feature the Australian premiere of the adaptation of J.S.Bach’s famous ‘G Major Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano’. Concert 4: Up Close and Personal Conductor, pianist, broadcaster and SCMF patron Guy Noble, will host an insightful 75 minute program that takes the audience ‘up close and personal’ on a journey into the mind and workings of a successful professional musician. Guy will be joined by one of Australia’s finest international artists, the great Mezzo-Soprano Deborah Humble, along with pianist Andrew West and Amanda Cole PhD, founder of ‘Performance Brilliance’, to give their unique views and expertise on musical life and how to master both body and mind to reach potential and to enhance performance. Concert 5: Piers Lane One of Australia’s ‘favourite sons’, the acclaimed pianist Piers Lane, will be giving his only public recital in Australia in 2018 at the SCMF, performing a diverse and stunning program featuring works by J.S.Bach, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. A pianist who stands out as an engaging and highly versatile performer, Piers’ concerto repertoire alone exceeds ninety-five works, he has performed five times at the BBC Proms and has a discography of over 50 CD’s spanning Bach to Williamson. #1 Burst Your Bubble Students will have the chance to blow a big glass bubble until it bursts! (10-15 minutes). No previous experience necessary. When: Sat 15 & Sun 16 Sept, 10am - 4pm Cost: $10

#2 Come Blow Your Form This is a simple vase blowing lesson. Students are supported to create a drop vase by arranging colours on the marver. The teacher then assists the student to pick those colours up by rolling hot glass over them and then covering with clear glass from the furnace. The teacher will then assist to blow the bubble out, hang and put into kiln to cool slowly (30 – 45 minutes). Students return to collect the vase once it is cooled. No previous experience necessary. #3 Two Day Glass Blowing Intensive This beginner’s workshop is the perfect way to discover the excitement of working with hot glass and join in the fascinating foray into the mysteries of the age-old art form of glass blowing. The workshop explores the basics of glassblowing and is aimed at beginners wishing to learn glassblowing at the furnace. No experience is required. Students will learn how to gather and marver, shape and blow glass and how to use the appropriate tools through basic exercises and practice. Use of colour will also be explored. Students usually end up with 2-4 pieces: a paperweight, tumbler, small vase or bowl. When: Mon 17 & Tues 18 Sept, 10am - 4pm and Sat 22 & Sun 23 Sept, 10am - 4pm Cost: $580

#4 Two Day Weekend Glass Casting Intensive This is a unique opportunity to study with the artist, Sallie Portnoy in her studio by the sea and to take home a wealth of knowledge and several new cast sculptures. Have an inspiring weekend getting the creative juices flowing. This two day workshop will take students on an intensive journey into the creative possibilities of kiln cast glass. The instructor will demystify the casting process by teaching how to model and form positives in clay to make simple open moulds. The use of Gel-Flex rubber will also be demonstrated.
