July 17 — Club Meeting. WPresident Mark Burton will give a craft talk and talk about his vision for the 2017-2018 Rotary Year.

Save The DateAugust 14 — Rotary Book Club. The book this month is The El-ephant Whisperer: My Life the Herd in the African Wild by Lawrence Anthony.

Mark Your CalendarsSummertime and the living is busy – with sign-up sheets for numerous activities on our tables: the Walk for Life on July 15, the District Breakfast on July 18 and the P.S. I Love You Day at the Beach on July 29.

President Shannon Ryan and Kathleen Terry shared their experiences at last year’s Walk For Life (an eye-opening experience for Shannon’s daughters) and urged us to join them at the eighth annual event, a 2.5 walk beginning at the Sheriff Youth Center at 11911 S. Vermont spon-sored by the People for Community Improvement. If you are interested, Kathleen is organizing carpools.

We also heard from Patricia Jones, the founder of the P.S. I Love You Foundation, who described her organization and its annual Day at the Beach. Kathleen Terry is on the board (why are we not surprised?). Patricia described the day’s activities: 300 inner city kids are paired with folks like us who “adopt a kid for the day, to break barriers, develop trust” and, basically, have fun. Jason Hearne is organizing volunteers. And let Ken Deemer know if you’d like to attend the next Rotary Dis-trict Breakfast on July 18.

The June 26 meeting started with a salute to the flag, literally, by Mike Doell, who explained that military veterans could salute rather than place their hands over their hearts. In his thought for the day, John Russo talked about the outpouring of support Rotarians give to fellow Rotarians and their families, something clearly important to John as he begins eight weeks of radiation therapy.

Farewell to our Marriott CrewIt was also a day of “lasts” – President Shannon’s last day as our presi-dent, our last meeting at the Marriott, and the last time we’ll be served by our hard-working servers. Thanks to Dr. Chris, we had the opportunity to reward their efforts, and he presented each of them with a check and a thank you card.

President Shannon eloquently described the privileges of being presi-dent – being Mrs. Claus when she rode in the Santa Float (recently rebuilt by Leadership Manhattan Beach) and giving out scholarships to high school and community college students were two of her favorite experiences. Shannon has told us frequently that she isn’t funny, but she clearly is having fun!

Happy Dollars were “donated” by proud empty nester Jason Wal-lace, whose daughter graduated from UC, Irvine and has a job; Geoff Bremer, whose son will be spending his summer working for Japan Times in Tokyo; Monica Farrell Bringleson, in honor of dad Rick Farrell’s birthday; and David Gendron, who thanked James Kennedy for new solar panels and Eric Iverson for revamping his website. Rick “celebrated” his birthday by hosting our Book Club that evening, and Monica was there with baby bundt cakes for all.

On Game at LAXTim Hageman introduced our speaker, Chief Dave Maggard, whose career in law enforcement spans 33 years, some of them in Manhattan Beach. Chief Maggard is Chief of Police for the Los Angeles Airport Police. It’s a big job keeping the 81 million people who go through LAX each year safe, but Maggard has the right officers for the job, a diverse group who speak dozens of languages. The goal, he explained, was to “keep people safe but also be approachable, be ambassadors.” He talked about terrorist attacks at airports around the world and said “We’re on game all the time.”

Next meeting – a day of firsts with new President Mark Burton presid-ing over our first meeting at Verandas.

Yours In Rotary,Sue Vogl
