Wallawong Clients’ Steers Shine at 2012 Sydney Royal Easter Show Murray Greys enhanced their carcase quality

reputation with nineteen steers by Walla-

wong bulls performing strongly at the 2012

Sydney Royal Easter Show Steer and Car-

case Competition.

Wallawong client steers filled many of the

high ribbon places in the live competition,

including a steer bred by Rodger and June

Lucas, Emerald Hill, winning lightweight steer

Class 5 and being awarded the 2012

Reserve Champion Lightweight Steer.

The 366kg Murray Grey steer scanned 7mm

fat over the rump and 7mm on the rib and

was sired by Wallawong Quorum out of a

commercial cow. The steer then sold for one

of the top prices at the auction when pur-

chased for $5.00/kg liveweight by Tender

Gourmet Meats who appreciated the quality

cattle entered by Wallawong clients. A second Lucas steer

by Wallawong Quorum placed third in steer class 6.

Also scoring well in the lightweight steer and carcase division

was a steer bred by Neil and Felicity Fleck, Mullaley and

sired by Wallawong Qualifier. The 337kg steer placed sec-

ond in a strong class of 17 steers and the carcase won third

place, scoring maximum points for p8 fat cover, pH, and

meat colour, combined with a high eating quality score and

eye muscle area to accumulate 80.0 points. (continued over)

A wonderful group of young people from Armidale, Wagga,

Gosford, Gunnedah and Bellingen assisted us in preparing

and leading the steers this year. The crew is pictured below.

2012 Sydney Royal Steer Results continued A brother to the 2011 Middleweight Champion Carcase from

Lyn Louis, Barraba also placed highly in the lightweight steer

and carcase competition. Achieving 5th place in the live judg-

ing, the carcase achieved 2nd place from 17 entries (81.5pts)

along with being awarded a Bronze medal for carcase quality

from the RAS.

Wallawong’s middleweight division entries were not to be out-

done, achieving four Bronze Medals from the RAS for carcase

quality. This included an entry from Heath Birchall, Breeza,

sired by Wallawong Pecorino that was Highly Commended in

Steer class 8.

Also of note were three entries sired by Wallawong Rumpy

entered by St Mary’s College Gunnedah and Wallawong Murray Greys, and bred by Peter Webb, Baan

Baa. Two steers both finished fifth in classes 7 and 8 and the three carcases achieved highly consistent

scores of 85 points and third place, 82.5 points and Bronze Medal and 81.5 points in carcase classes 7 & 8.

A high profile butcher shop in Turramurra, Eastern Road Quality Meats noted the quality of the Wallawong

Murray Grey steers on offer, purchasing four steers for their retail operation to $3.00/kg liveweight. Coles

supermarkets also purchased five of the Wallawong steers for their meat division to $3.05/kg liveweight.

All the steers were selected for the Sydney Royal team by Lachlan back in December 2011 and fed for 90-

100 days on a home mixed ration at ‘Marriot Park’. They also consumed Olsson’s Cattle Tranz electrolyte

prior to leaving and at the show in order to minimize weight loss due to traveling and handling.

All together nineteen Murray Grey steers

from Wallawong clients were shown collect-

ing a bounty of ribbons including a first

place and the Reserve Lightweight Champion

Carcase, two second places, five Bronze

Medals for Carcase Quality, three thirds,

four fifths and two Highly Commended rib-

bons across the purebred and trade steer

and carcase classes. Murray Greys also won

the highly coveted Stan Hill trophy for the

highest scoring team of three carcases.

It’s great for all the hard work to pay off

and to see what you are really producing

with steer and carcase results like these.

Congratulations and thanks to all breeders.

Great Trip to Beef 2012 Rockhampton We enjoyed a fantastic trip to Rockhampton earlier in

May and met so many people enthused with the op-

portunity of using Murray Greys in their future breed-

ing programs. We created our Wallawong Murray

Grey site with pens of cattle on display - 3 big sale

bulls, 2 bulls for sale off the site and yearlings Walla-

wong Dawn and Wallawong Voltage for the show.

We developed a deeper understanding of the wide

variety of climatic conditions our cattle must handle as

we talked to people from all over Australia using

Murray Greys. After a successful class win at Sydney

Royal, W.Voltage was awarded Reserve Calf Cham-

pion at Beef 2012 while W.Dawn won her heifer class.

Wallawong welcomes partnership with Olsson’s after Sydney Steer Trial We trialled the Olsson’s Cattle Tranz electrolyte products

when recently transporting 20 steers to Sydney Royal and

cattle to Beef 2012 Rockhampton. The Cattle Tranz tablets

are placed in the water source 24 hours prior to transport

and then again at the destination to provide additional en-

ergy and minerals and encourage the resumption of drink-

ing. We normally observe the steers ‘going off the water’

and not resuming normal drinking, leading to weight losses

around 15-20kg (around 5% bodyweight). At Sydney this

year 75% of the steers went straight back onto water and

the average loss was halved to 10kg (2.5%) with some animals not losing any weight. As a result of this trial

we have formed a partnership to undertake joint promotional activities of Olsson’s cattle supplement products.
