In business: To maximize production, sales and profits, and to optimize the operation of the OAG project to be able to maximize our exports.

In relation to employees: More engagement of employees and continuous improvement in the work environment, as well as the efficient knowledge management.

In relation to the major projects: to progress with the IGD project so as to complete it as on target, and to continue with the other major projects (like the replacement of the trains and the FHER project).

Following the two presentations in both Das Island and Abu Dhabi, the Management Team was called to the stage and attendees were invited to raise their queries, remarks and concerns.

A lively discussion took place with the management about several issues raised during the presentations. One of the issues raised was performance appraisal and enhancement, succession planning, training, job grades and salaries, etc.

All along, the General management stressed that it always look into the best ways to provide employees with a comfortable and productive work environment so they can excel in their jobs.

CEO Communication Sessions

Employees have come to wait for this annual event and follow it up with interest, simply because this review reflects their own endeavors and

achievements throughout the year.

This year’s sessions started first in Abu Dhabi, where Mr. Fahim Kazim, CEO, presided the session that was held on March 4, 2012. The session was attended by all members of the Senior Management team in Abu Dhabi, in addition to division managers and scores of employees.

The CEO’s Das Communication Session was held on March 13, 2012 and chaired by Mr. Fahim Kazim. It was also attended by members of the Senior Management in addition to Mr. Fahim Uddin, Deputy Vice President (LNG Plant) as well as division managers and department heads on Das Island, and dozens of other employees.

In both sessions, the CEO gave a presentation about ADGAS performance throughout 2011. He started by expressing his satisfaction and appreciation of this now established procedure of holding regular communication sessions on all levels to ensure transparency, and free, direct interaction between the Management Team and employees.

The CEO highlighted the 2011 performance and achievements in comparison with the previous year.

2011 Performance Highlights:Reviewing ADGAS key performance indicators for 2011, the CEO pointed out that the Company had hit new records and excellent performance in all areas that constitute the three pillars of sustainability; namely, HSE, people and business.

HSE-wise, the General management has given paramount priority to the safety of employees and assets, as safety is the gateway of the Company’s success and the quality of work can’t be delivered if safety practices are not strictly observed.

This genuine interest was reflected on the performance of employees, which resulted in a milestone of 31,07 million man-hours worked without LTI.

Additionally, ADGAS was able to reduce gas flaring from 9.2 MMSCFD in 2010 to 8,5 MMSCFD in 2011, the lowest flaring level in the history of ADGAS, which will increase our determination to continue our efforts to reduce these emissions even more in the future.

In terms of production and sales, 2011 has witnessed an increase in the Company’s sales from 4,605 million USD in 2010 to 5,984 million USD in 2011. ADGAS net profits have consequently increased from 841 million USD in 2010 to 1,130 billion USD in 2011..

In people development and training, the total number of employees who participated in training courses increased from 2058 in 2010 to 2566 in 2011. Corporate spending on training and development increased significantly, from 2,88 million USD to 3,93 million USD in 2011.

In terms of social and humanitarian activities, ADGAS activities and contributions have considerably increased, promoting ADGAS role as a responsible citizen and attracting widespread recognition for ADGAS role from several stakeholders in Abu Dhabi and the UAE at large. ADGAS contributions have risen from 1,63 million USD in 2010 to 2,00 million USD in 2011, with some 68 events and activities organized during last year, indicating a growing social role for ADGAS. This has won ADGAS considerable recognition from so many stakeholders, and this was reflected in a considerable amount of coverage in the local media.

In conclusion, we can comfortably say that ADGAS overall performance in 2011 was distinguished across the board, which puts more responsibility on our shoulders to sustain this level of performance and further improve it.

Key Priorities for 2012:Setting the ground for 2012, the CEO stressed that the main priorities and challenges we all have to address in 2011 can be summarized as follows:

In HSE: to achieve our next safety milestone of 44 million man-hours without LTI, by combatting complacency. We should also reduce flaring and emissions through efficient operation of our assets.

Maintaining Transparency and AccountabilityADGAS General Management continues to promote the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance by continuously engaging employees, seeking their feedback and involving them in the policies of the Company. It has become an annual procedure to hold two communication sessions between the Management and the employees, one in Abu Dhabi and the other on Das Island.

To mark this occasion, ADGAS and ADMA-OPCO organized a joint workshop for their young

professionals on March 6, 2012 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

The workshop aimed at discussing CAMS related issues like CAMS implementation, coaching, real job tasks, talent management, succession planning, integration of CAMS graduates, etc.

The workshop brought together more than 50 CAMS trainees or graduates who were able to share their views and experience in the workshop.

CAMS system provides new recruits with extensive training to develop their administrative and technical competencies as well as soft skills to prepare them for jobs within ADNOC Group companies.

10 years have passed since ADNOC adopted the Competency Assurance Management System (CAMS) back in 2002. Since then, thousands of national young men have benefited from this training and development tool to improve their skills and qualify for good posts within ADNOC Group of Companies.

Celebrating the 10th CAMS Anniversary

1. Base management decisions on a long-term philosophy, even at the expense of short-term financial goals. Align the organization toward a common purpose

that will bring the company to the next level. Generate value for the customer, society, and

the economy and evaluate every function in the company in terms of its ability to achieve this.

2. Create a continuous process flow to bring problems to the surface. Redesign work processes to achieve high value-

3. Use “pull” systems to avoid overproduction. Minimize your work in process and warehousing

of inventory by stocking small amounts of each product and frequently restocking based on what the customer actually takes away.

Be responsive to the day-by-day shifts in customer demand rather than relying on computer schedules and systems to track wasteful inventory.

4. Level out the workload. Eliminate waste, overburden to people and

equipment and unevenness in the production schedule.

5. Build into your organization support systems to quickly solve problems Use all the modern quality assurance methods

available. Develop a visual system to alert teams or project

leaders about problems.6. Standardized tasks and processes are the foundation

for continuous improvement and employee empowerment. Use stable methods everywhere to maintain the

predictability, regular timing, and output of your processes.

7. Use visual control so no problems are hidden. Use simple visual indicators to help people

determine whether they are in a standard condition or deviating from it.

Reduce your reports to one paper whenever possible, even for important decisions.

8. Use reliable technology that serves your people and processes.

By Jeffrey LikerReviewed by: Mr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein, Operations Division

Use proven and thoroughly tested technology because new technology is often unreliable and difficult to standardize which endangers the “flow.”

9. Add value to the organization by developing your people. Grow leaders who thoroughly understand the work

and teach it to others. Leaders must be role models of the company’s not

just employees who accomplish tasks and have good people skills.

10. Develop exceptional individuals and teams to achieve exceptional results and common goals. Create a strong, stable culture in which company

values and beliefs are widely shared. Use cross-functional teams to improve quality and

enhance productivity flow.11. Respect your extended network of partners and

suppliers. Treat your partners and suppliers as an extension business by prove.

12. Go and see for yourself to thoroughly understand the situation. Solve problems and improve processes by

personally observing and verifying data rather than theorizing on the basis of what other people or the computer screen tell you.

13. Make decisions slowly by consensus, thoroughly considering all options; implement decisions rapidly. Discussing problems and potential solutions with

all of those affected, to collect their ideas and get an agreement. Although it’s time-consuming, but it helps broaden the search for solutions, and once a decision is made, the stage is set for rapid implementation.

14. Become a learning organization through relentless reflection and continuous improvement. Standardize the best practices and use continuous

and effective improvement tools to determine the cause of inefficiencies.

Protect the organizational knowledge base by developing stable personnel, slow promotion, and very careful succession systems.

Leaders should also support and empower line managers as they are meant to monitor and ensure process safety.

Leading safety performance indicators should be established.

There is a need for putting in place a process safety auditing system.

The Board of the organization should follow up the issue of process safety.

Leaders should study and assimilate the best practices of industry leaders in process safety.

Mr. Baker concluded with the advice that a good leadership is that which is conscious about safety, always looking for ways to improve process safety.

This last point is what Professor Andrew Hopkins took to start his own presentation.

He began by stressing that leaders create and change cultures, while managers live within them. Mindful leaders are those who are always pre-occupied with the possibility of something going wrong. They know that bad news doesn’t go up the corporate ladder. They lie awake at night worrying about the safety of their processes. They feel a “chronic unease” and they are always skeptical about good news audits.

Professor Andrew went on to give some advices to ADNOC managers attending the symposium:

Commission audits to go and find the most serious problems

Go and find out for yourself. LISTEN! The leader’s role is to listen and encourage

people to talk. Senior executives should spend at least one hour a

week on site, middle managers should spend one hour a day on site, while line supervisors should spend 30% of their time on site.

You should know to whom you should talk. It is not enough to talk to your direct subordinates. Rather, you should go down and talk to your blue collar employees. Some senior executive feel uneasy talking to workers because they are conscious of the economic gap, but this should not prevent a leader from going down, sitting with workers and openly discuss their views and concerns.

After the two presentations, attendees were invited to raise their questions and express their views, which resulted in a highly interactive exchange of ideas between Abu Dhabi’s oil and gas industry leaders and the two speakers.

The two speakers further commended the pace at which Abu Dhabi is progressing, saying that they have been in Abu Dhabi before, and they have watched it flourishing rapidly in the last few years.

An ADNOC Process Safety Symposium

The event hosted the two globally known speakers, Mr. James Baker, former US Secretary of State and Professor Andrew Hopkins, Professor of Sociology, Australia.

The Symposium started with a welcoming note from ADNOC Director General, H.E. Abdulla Al Suwaidi, who welcomed the two distinguished guests and the participants of this high level event which brought together the senior managements of ADNOC Group companies.

H.E. pointed out that ADNOC has always considered process safety a priority in all industrial operations and has always warned against complacency, which was reflected in its safety record.

This was followed by the presentation of Mr. James Baker, titled “Baker’s Report: Learning for Leadership”. Mr. Baker reviewed his own experience after being asked by BP to chair the Investigation Panel that investigated the circumstances that led to the explosion at BP’s refinery in Texas City on March 23, 2005, killing 15 people and leaving 170 injured.

The investigation, said Mr. Baker, concluded that BP has focused on personal safety rather than process safety, with dangerous gaps in the Company’s safety management system.

He summarized the main recommendations of the investigation as follows:

There is a need for a process safety leadership, which starts at the top level.

An integrated process safety management system should be established and monitored.

Process safety knowledge and education should spread across the organization.

Process safety culture should prevail, where employees are encouraged to ask questions and challenge prevailing ideas and procedures.

Leaders should put high expectations and responsibility towards safety.

individuals and organizations alike to take part in the efforts to reduce energy consumption by switching off all lights and energy-consuming machines between 8:30 and 9:30 PM on March 31, 2012. The event was organized by the Emirates Wildlife Society in cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature “EWS-WWF.”

Commenting on ADGAS participation in the event, Mr. Fahim Kazim, ADGAS CEO, said, “ADGAS is not new to the environmental concerns, as it was initially established as an environmental venture, to stop the flaring of associated gas into the atmosphere. Since then, the environment has always been an integral part of our strategy and policies”.

“We were one of the UAE’s earliest organizations to embrace this global initiative. In fact, we have always been working on reducing our environmental footprint both on Das Island and in Abu Dhabi. This campaign is just an added reminder of our responsibilities towards the planet and the coming generations,” concluded Mr. Kazim.

Circulars, banners and other tools of spreading awareness have been used a couple of weeks before the Earth Hour date. A big paned was erected at the Headquarters lobby where employees signed their names as a pledge to support the initiative.

“We are glad to join hands with the EWS and the Environmental Agency – Abu Dhabi, and with the ever growing movement of world NGOs, organizations and private citizens who celebrate this event annually in an effort to spread awareness on the grave dangers threatening our planet due to excessive and inconsiderate consumption of energy,” said Mr. Salem Al Ameri, Chairman of ADGAS Sustainability Committee.

“We have previously organized our own environmental initiatives, some of which (like the Paperless Day campaign) have been met with national and global applaud,” Mr. Al Ameri added.

The employees of Abu Dhabi Gas Liquefaction Company (ADGAS), decided to meet again the environmental challenge and further reduce their personal and corporate environmental footprint by proactively embracing the Earth Hour initiative for the second consecutive year.
