Principal’s Report
It is indeed a pleasure to submit a report of the activities of Vignan’s institute
of information technology for the academic year 2015-16. In view of fulfilling the
organization’s mission, the institute has undertaken various academic programs,
training activities, research facilities and opportunities supported by continuous
industry - institute interaction programs. The key beneficiaries from the institute are
students seeded with new, innovative ideas and faculty members. The institute
believes that such practices make the society to take the challenges and achieve the
national objectives such as “Skill India”.
The institute has been constantly in pursuing its efforts to build a strong
teaching – learning process, improving results and developing faculty i.e., self
growing with community growing. This has made the institute a star performer in
the industry in east coastal Andhra Pradesh. The uptrend in placements is showing
positive sign of development in line with the nations objectives.
To get a quality output the input is also to be qualitative so to improve the
quality of the students, the institute mainly concentrating on quality of the faculty
which can be measured in terms research - funded research projects sanctioned by
the Government bodies such as Department of Science & Technology (DST) and
Union Grants Commission (UGC) and Journal publications indexed by Elsevier's
Scopus. The institute was successful is its pursuit which is evident from the uptrend
in research publications when compared from 2014-15 to 2015-16.
In view of the rapid growth that the institute has experienced over the past
couple of years, it has become imperative to expand the infrastructure at an equal or
a faster pace. In lines with the need, the institute has spent considerable resources
in terms of setting up the necessary IT infrastructure to enable seamless and
efficient operations through automated processes which were realized through in-
house developed software. The conducive climate of “Skill India” is showing new
horizons. The institute was successful in blending itself with the nation’s concept
which is evident from the successful travel of 2015-16 in terms of student
admissions, academic results, placements, entrepreneurship skill development and
development in research. Finally, the Institute has a successful academic year 2015-

16 in terms of academic results, placements and research output. The Institute has
stood for its stated vision of Technical leadership with ethical values.
1. Student Admissions:
Student admissions in the academic year 2015-16 showed an uptrend when
compared to the previous years as shown in the trend analysis. The pursuit of the
institution in terms of quality education has capitulated positive results both in
terms of academic results and placements thus placing the institute to be the first
choice of parents for Professionally educating their wards.
2. Academic Performance:
The Institute since its inception has been instrumental in raising quality
consciousness among all its stakeholders which enabled the adoption and
implementation of some of the best practices in the region. The Institute is aware of
the fact that the dimensions on Quality of education keep changing with time which
needs continuous monitoring to cope up with the changing national and global
trends in teaching and research.

The quality consciousness and continuous monitoring has aided for excellent
consistent course completion of the students. For UG students the course
completion is maintained above 80 percent, for PG it should above 90-100 percent
which is because of effective teaching learning mechanisms.
One of the key performances metric for any organization during a phase of rapid
growth is the standardization in the quality of the services offered in the face of
increasing scale. The institute has kept up the quality of teaching throughout the
growth phase as a result the student strength has reached 4,087. This could be
achieved with the introduction of new and innovative monitoring mechanisms such
as real-time auditing of teacher performances and automatic analysis of results.
3. Placement performance / Career guidance
Campus placements track record:
The Institute’s in-house training team worked with a dedicated zeal for the entire
academic year of 2015-16 to prepare students for the upcoming placements. In
addition to that, the institute has put on all-round efforts in terms of improving
Industry relationships through Internships, increasing stress on lab work to equip the
student with practical experience have yielded results and the overall feedback from
the Industry personnel has given inputs for positive improvements in placements. In
order to make students industry ready, the institute emphasizes holistic
development of every student who enters the portals of the institution. In its effort
to reduce the gap between the industry and academia the institute regularly

interacts with the industrial experts to understand the deficiencies in the academics
thus creating a road map for developing student in general and developing the
nation in particular. For some theoretical contents, where establishment of labs is
not feasible, the institute takes help of many industries in and around like:
1) For High-Voltage Labs, the institute works with JNTUK, Kakinada
2) For communication, tracking and navigation related areas; the institute is working
with NSTL
3) For real time application of cloud computing concepts, the institute is working
with Microsoft
4) The institution is working with GE and Boeing to let the faculty understand the
advanced applications in aircraft engines
The above associations with industry and research bodies, benefit the faculty and
students greatly, it is also reflected in the placement results. Students are also
trained to hone their employability skills through regular campus recruitment
training (CRT) programs by renowned academicians and professional trainers from
the industry. The department of training and placement constantly endeavours
towards providing best placement opportunities.

The institute consistently achieved nearly 100% placements among eligible students
for last 3 years with Microsoft offering the highest pay package of INR 9.74 Lakhs per
annum in the year 2016.
The knowledge, technical skills and other skills like communication, inter-personal,
professionalism and leadership are also assessed through not only the number of
placements made but also the level of companies that hire.
4. Research and Development
Initiatives of Research and Development:
The institute has a vibrant research atmosphere with 43 faculty members pursuing
research, a number of doctorate faculty guiding 23 research scholars and about 7
funded projects. In addition, the institution has an enthusiastic and dedicated
Research & Development cell for carrying out research activities in a systematic
manner.
The outcome of the cell operations is as follows:
1. 171 papers are published in various journals / conferences
2. The institute has been successful in submitting proposals for the prestigious
DST FIST programme.
3. IEEE Conference on Electrical, Electronics, Signals, Communication and
Optimization EESCO-2015 was organized

The Institution has taken up the following initiatives:
1. A well defined R&D policy
The institute has a well-defined R&D policy which clearly outlines the support systems and incentivisation mechanisms available for researchers.
2. Autonomy to the principal investigator
The projects sanctioned by the various funding agencies such as AICTE, IEI, DST, NSTL, etc., are supported by the management by providing full financial freedom to the Principal Investigator.
3. Timely availability or release of resources
The institution creates separate bank accounts for each of the funded research projects with the PI as a co-signatory to take care of timely availability of resources for research. Additional resources are provided whenever required for the successful completion of the projects.
4. Special support to faculty through experts from premier institutes
Experts from premier institutes are regularly invited to the campus to interact and guide the faculty. The following are a few experts who have been invited to the institute: 1. Prof. Mohan, IISc, Bangalore 2.Prof. Visawanadham, IIT Bombay 3. Dr. K.Harinarayana, ADA 4.Prof. Ganeshan, IIT Madras

a. Special privileges such as reduced work load, on duty for visiting industries, attending conferences, workshops, faculty development programs and seminars are provided for the faculty.

In addition to the above activities, a good number of seminars and
workshops have been conducted to develop the specific research skills
among faculty and students. The concerted efforts of the institution created

The institute continuously works towards encouraging students to undertake
research work through the following initiatives:
➢ Introduction of mini projects and optional summer internships to
encourage the students to solve real world problems. The students
continuously pursue internships with organizations such as Steel Plant,
HPCL, BHEL, etc.
➢ Mandatory involvement of UG and PG students in funded research
projects.
➢ Enrichment programs such as MATLAB, Hyper works, CATIA, CAD, PLC,
SCADA, etc. are conducted.
➢ The institution arranges industrial visits for the students every semester
to organizations and companies like Steel Plant, Telecom Training Centre
(BSNL), RADAR Station, All India Radio, Power Plants etc.
A good number of students at the institute have undertaken research
activities. A summary of all such activities is provided below:
Professional Development activities:
Students have participated in various Co-curricular activities such as:
* Paper presentation * Poster presentation * Technical quiz
* Working models * Robo workshop
With all the above efforts about 200 to 300 students participate in every year in the
above inter college competitions and win good number of prizes.
Sponsored Research projects taken up during 2015-16:
The institute provides financial, infrastructure and expert guidance support to the
faculty members in order to help them to secure research funds. Some of
the support mechanisms are listed below:
• Seed money is provided to faculty to undertake preliminary research
whose output such as experimental data, research publications can be

used for applying for funding projects.
• Mentoring sessions are provided by the experts from premier institutes
regarding project proposal preparation.
• Guidance is provided by experts from funding agencies such asDST, NSTL
and MSME regarding the available funding schemes.
• Verification and vetting of project proposals are carried out by experts
from premier institutes and research labs.
• Incentives are provided to faculty members to encourage them to
publish papers. Such papers increase the potential of success of funding
proposals in those research areas.
Though young institution, the institute has actively started supporting consultancy

Due to the focusing efforts of the institute the number of consultancy projects may
be increased to 10 projects completed/ongoing/proposed in the coming academic
year 2016-17. In addition the institute looks forward to sign more MOUs.
Thus, The Institute has taken significant strides in the pursuit of true research
in the academic year 2015-16 and the innovative initiatives of the year completed
are expected to yield positive results in the years to come.

association with the ISB is offering the Technology Entrepreneurship program to
engineering graduates after the second year. In this program, experts from ISB guide
the students regarding the process of commercialization of ideas, preparing business
plans, setting up companies, process and opportunities for funding and scaling up of
companies. This process helps the students to think of starting companies even while
pursuing their undergraduate program. As described above, the institute has
designed and developed curriculum for non-credit courses based on the student
need in order to help them achieve the objectives of employment, higher studies
and Entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship development cell achievements during 2015-2016:
• The cell has succeeded in terms of conducting more number of workshops to
enrich the entrepreneurial skills among the interested students
• Conducted Entrepreneurship Awareness Drive in association with IIT-KGP
• Motivational programs and Faculty Development Programs are also
conducted to motivate the students towards entrepreneurship and also the
faculty to put their efforts in motivating the students towards
entrepreneurship
• Also ED cell has conducted some extension activities during 2015-16 like Eye
camp, and Dental camp etc
• Also undertaken social conscious programs like celebration of National Youth
Day on the occasion of 153rd Birthday celebrations of Sri Swami Vivekananda
• Put efforts towards development of self employment and employability skills
among the students
Infrastructure development
Right from its inception, the institute has been planning its infrastructure facilities in
a time-bound and scientific way towards facilitating all learning activities without
any hassle. The institution adopts “Bottom up approach” in planning and “Top down
approach” in execution and monitoring. While the policy is to comply with all
statutory norms, the strategy is to provide more than what is stipulated to increase
comfort in teaching learning process and student living.

The institute has a well-defined policy for creation and enhancement in a time-
bound, scientific way towards facilitating all learning activities without any hassle.
As on today, to have adequate infrastructure the institute has initiated many
development of infrastructure. The institute is located in a serene atmosphere and
a pollution free area nestled among hills. The institute is planning the following to
increase the infrastructural facilities
i) The space available per student is 12.40Sq.m which is 24% more than the
one prescribed by AICTE norms.
ii) Average area of each class room is120 Sq.m as against 66 Sq.m stipulated
by AICTE.
iii) The average area for circulation is maintained at 30 – 35% of area, to
facilitate free movement and informal discussions among students and
faculty.
iv) Every classroom enjoys good lighting and ventilation and comfortably
accommodates 60 students.
v) Utmost care is to be taken in the design of furniture to provide student
comfort and create a professional feel.
vi) The air-conditioning library is equipped with comfortable and
aesthetically designed furniture to enable its use for longer hours.
vii) to develop plenty of greenery, to make the campus is eco-friendly
providing a good ambience and stimulating learning experience.
viii) Most of the infrastructure, especially library, laboratories and class
rooms are utilized in multiple ways to realize the goals of curricular and
extracurricular development.
All departments are to be provided with the state-of-the art laboratories to
meet the curriculum requirement and even beyond. Equipment required for
the regular curriculum and to deal with the topics beyond the syllabus and
also for the research is provided.

7. Financial Results:
In the financial year 2015-16, the institute has collected total receipts of INR
26.3 Crores vis-à-vis the annual operational expenditure of INR 35.4 Crores, thus
generating an annual deficit of INR 9.1 Crores. The deficit is attributed to the rapid
growth that the institute is experiencing; the increase in the expenses during the
same period. The increase in expenses is expected to slow down in the next couple
of years as the institute reaches saturation in terms of staff additions and
infrastructure additions.

A component analysis of the institute’s annual expenditure shows a mix of staff
salaries accounting for 38% of the total expenditure followed by administrative
expenditure with 33% of the total expenditure which is further followed by Non-
Recurring expenditure of 29%. This is lines with the norms prescribed by many

Governance Report
The institute’s mission resonates with the core values of the founders of the institute in
serving the base needs of the society and in turn serving the Nation. The institution’s
mission defines its distinctive characteristics as follows:
a) The institution’s mission to serve the surrounding regions and the nation
resonates very much with the values and the philosophy of the founding
members
b) Through its innovative teaching-learning practices, the institute serves the needs
of the students by making them ready for best opportunities in employment,
higher studies and entrepreneurship
c) Through pursuing cutting edge research the institute serves the needs of the
local society and the industry in terms of providing innovative technology
solutions for their problems
d) The institute strongly believes in a future where the best teaching-learning is
provided to the students transforming them to be visionaries and leaders
The Governance and administrative processes as well as systems in the
institute are democratic, de-centralized; transparent and made participative at all
levels for smooth functioning to realize the University’s vision and mission.
• With well-defined administrative roles, the institution encourages
independence and autonomy to each department to reach their set goals.
• The Institutes Grievance Cell resolves student problems at the earliest.
• The feedback of students and other stakeholders are taken and analyzed the
same for remedial action.
• Professional development of teaching and non-teaching is encouraged by
sponsoring to QIP, conferences and workshops.
• Welfare schemes like insurance and health checkup are offered to faculty and
staff.

• Gender audit is carried out regularly. The institute has more than 33% girl
students and women faculty. Gender sensitization programmes are conducted
on the campus.

IQAC takes care of quality maintenance of all activities of the institution by
reviewing them periodically.
In order to ensure effective implementation of policies and plans from time
to time, the institute adopts the following procedures:
Academic leadership is provided to faculty members at every level with the Principal
being assisted by the Deans who are in turn assisted by HoDs. They are assisted by
the other faculty members as coordinators of various academic committees. Each of
these roles is given full freedom to lead their respective domains regarding the
introduction of innovative teaching-learning methodologies, innovative practices and
evaluation techniques.
Grievances / Contingency Management
The University has Grievance Cells at overall University level and individual
Department levels. All stakeholders such as Students, Parents, Alumni and Industry
are part of the various levels of the Grievance Cells. The following are a few
examples of grievances received by the University Grievance Cell and the resolutions
provided: The following committees have been set up to address any serious
grievances:
• Grievance and Redressal Cell (GRC)
• Women Protection Cell (WPC)
• Anti Ragging Committee(ARC)
Facilities like drop boxes, complaint registers and online complaint mechanism are in

Summary
Vignan’s Institute of information Technology has completed another successful year
in its endeavor to blend itself in the nation’s objective of “Skill India” through
Technological upliftment. It is a matter of pride that majority of the students who
have come from various backgrounds and communities have successfully pursued
their professional courses this year at the Institute and have gone on to either
become entrepreneurs or employees of multi-national companies or have moved on
to pursue their higher studies.
The process of training & monitoring has been significantly strengthened in the
academic year 2015-16 which has yielded good results and significantly higher and
better quality placements with good feedback from various companies. The
continued focus on research activities has resulted in increase in the number of
research papers published in conferences & journals. The number of papers
published in Scopus indexed journals has also risen significantly.
As the saying by Lao Tzu goes that a “Journey of a thousand miles begins with one
step”, Vignan’s Institute has taken a step in the journey of academic excellence
through quality dimensions. We at Vignan are excited about the prospects of
stakeholders in the journey to bring new colourful horizons. Further the excitement
for the potential this journey holds for us to strengthen the nation through supply of
technology leaders to “Skill India”!
