Malaysian ringgit falls more than 1 pct on selloff in stocks, bonds

Reuters4 hours ago Share PrintSINGAPORE, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Malaysia's ringgit fell more than 1 percent on Monday to stay near its 1998 pre-peg lows on an extended selloff in local stocks and bonds amid fears of capital outflows.

The ringgit lost 1.4 percent to 4.1370 per dollar in thin liquidity, compared to Friday's low of 4.1500, its weakest since Sept 1. 1998. Malaysia pegged the ringgit at 3.8000 from September 1998 until 2005.

Kuala Lumpur stocks dropped 1.5 percent, while the five-year government bond yield rose as high as 4.036 percent, its highest since November 2008.

Oil prices fell to near six-year lows, heightening concerns over Malaysian exports as the country is a big supplier of liquefied natural gas and palm oil.

Hopefully if the oil price moves upwards then only there's chance for the ringgit to go upbecause Malaysia depends a lot on its exports of oil and LPG/LNG gases to all over theworld.

Malaysian can complain until the cows come home, but what is the use . Bring the UMNO Government down and there will be hope ! Rise up Malaysia, and don't complain as you are the ones who voted UMNO in ,so live with it until the next election in 2018. In the meantime , suffer or take drastic action and bring the UMNO Government down. Allah save Malaysia !

There has been talk of a cut in credit rating for almost half a year now due to high debt level in Malaysia. Drop in currency can be good for Malaysian exporters. They are probably keeping quiet and laughing all the way to the bank.

Reply Accepting funds from Najib is normal, says Shahrir Samad

The Malaysian Insider1 hour 2 minutes ago Share PrintTan Sri Shahrir Samad, who was accused by whistle-blower site Sarawak Report of receiving RM1 million from Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said accepting funds from his party president was normal.

"Who else should I ask for financial aid for expenses in running my division, if not from my own party president," he was quoted as saying by the BNBBC.my portal.

The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) chairman (pic, right) said he was willing to cooperate and explain to investigators how the money was used, if requested to do so.

He added that aid from the party president to any division was normal, especially for divisions suffering from lack of funds.

On Saturday, Sarawak Report said that over US$650 million (RM2 billion) was transferred from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razaks AmPrivate Bank account in Kuala Lumpur to an account in Singapore after the general election.

The whistle-blower site also alleged that the money was deposited into an account in the name of Tanore Finance Corporation (BVI) at Falcon Bank in Singapore on the day the prime ministers AmPrivate Bank account was closed, August 30, 2013.

Sarawak Report said this was the same company account which had originally transferred US$681 million into Najibs AmPrivate Bank account, earlier in March of the same year.

Sarawak Report also said that Najib had distributed funds from his private accounts to a few Umno leaders, who are now proving to be some of the prime minister's strongest defenders in the present crisis.

The London-based site said Shahrir received had RM1 million after the 13th general election, Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan allegedly received RM2 million while Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin got RM50,000. August 17, 2015.

Umno the one betraying Malays, says DAP

The Malaysian Insider55 minutes ago Share

Tweet PrintA DAP lawmaker has hit out at Umno president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for saying that Malays will lose out if Umno is not in power, adding that it is actually the party which has betrayed the community.

Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari (pic, right) said this was seen in how Umno, as the lynchpin of the ruling coalition, had for the past three decades ruined agencies and government-linked companies meant to help and benefit Malays.

These include Felda, which gave thousands of landless Malay peasants jobs and property, and the Pilgrims Fund Board or Lembaga Tabung Haji, which subsidises costs for Muslims going on the haj or pilgrimage in Mecca.

Zairil said Umno had also turned a Malay-dominated bureaucracy respected and trusted during the 1960s and 1970s into a victim of its iron-fisted rule.

I am confident that the Malays will not become bangsat in their own land without Umno. But in reality, it is Umno who are who are bangsat for betraying Malays and Malaysia all this while, Zairil said in a statement.

The Malay term "bangsat" can mean bastard, villain or in this context, an outcast.

Zairil was referring to the term used by Najib yesterday in a speech to an Umno division.

According to news portal Malaysiakini, Najib had told Umno members that he would do everything to ensure that Umno and Barisan Nasional remained in power.

If Umno is not in power, the Malays will be bastards in their own land, Najib said yesterday while opening the Grik Umno division meeting in Perak. August 17, 2015.

Umno is like a cancer that has inflicted Malays. Unless they are bold enough to undergo radical surgery I feel they have a tough choice. If they had tested other alternatives and made and informed decision it is acceptable. Most have not exposed themselves to other alternative and hence I believe the reticence on their part will spell their doom.

Indications:

From a recent survey Malays would like to identify themselves as Muslims first b4 recognizing themselves as Malays. Some would see it as a 'mass form of escapism', thanks to ali-mamak culture replacing ali -baba culture.Unfortunately the survey did not give a choice if the Malays would prefer to be identified as Malays or as Bumiputras. Most likely they would have identified themselves for obvious reasons as 'bumiputras'.

Reply Too early to predict hung assembly in Selangor, Speaker says

By BY MELISSA CHI | The Malay Mail Online1 hour 1 minute ago Share PrintRelated Content

Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh (centre) arriving for the opening of the Selangor state

SHAH ALAM, Aug 17 Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh said today it was premature to predict the possibility of a hung state assembly, following news of a mass exodus of PAS lawmakers to its new splinter group, Harapan Baru (HB).

She said the state assembly will remain at status quo for now as she has yet to receive official letters from any defecting PAS lawmakers.

I think that is not for the Speaker to comment but it's really up to the top party leadership, now it's premature to discuss it.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no official notice but things went on smoothly today, she told reporters after todays assembly sitting kicked off this morning.

There was a level of maturity among the lawmakers to prioritise what is important to the people and what is merely a political speech, she added.

Last Friday, it was reported that HB Selangor coordinator Izham Hashim said there will be a mass exodus of PAS members to Selangor's HB chapter when it is launched at the end of the month.

Hulu Klang assemblyman Saari Sungib and Morib assemblyman Hasnul Baharuddin who had already been suspended from PAS for a year following the Selangor Mentri Besar crisis last year, have confirmed that they are now HB members.

So far, at least one other state assemblyman, Kota Raja MP Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud has confirmed plans to join the new political party.

Izham, who is the Kelana Jaya PAS division chief, had said HB divisions in all of Selangor's 22 parliamentary constituencies have been set up.

There are 13 PAS assemblymen in Selangor, excluding Saari and Hasnul.

DAP, in the meantime, has 15 seats while PKR has 13 seats in the 56-seat legislative assembly in the country's most developed state led by Mentri Besar Azmin Ali from PKR.

To form a simple majority in the Selangor legislative assembly, 29 seats are needed.

After the fallout between DAP and PAS over the hudud issue, and the clean sweep of seats by the conservatives in the recent PAS party elections, HB was formed by members of the Islamist partys progressive faction.

The movement, led by former deputy president Mohamad Sabu, was formed as an alternative to PAS, and is expected to replace the Islamist party once the opposition regroups to form a new pact.

So far, no official decision has been made about the new composition of the pact.

Currently, HB members are still PAS members as none of them had been sacked and the splinter group is not yet registered as a political party.

According to the PAS constitution, PAS members are not allowed to join another political party. If found out, the members would be sacked.

Penang tells PWD to resolve crisis after industrial zone choked by traffic

Massive jam at the Free Industrial Zone this morning due to road closure and road

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 The Penang government today demanded the Public Works Department (PWD) mitigate jams caused by its road diversion after this caused a three-hour gridlock in the Free Industrial Zone this morning.

A displeased Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng called the choking traffic a crisis, and instructed the PWD engineers and the UEM Builder Berhad construction manager Ismade Ismail to immediately resolve the matter.

This is the first time in history of Penang to see such massive traffic jams in that area and the state government is dissatisfied with how it was handled by PWD, he said in a press conference at his office together with Ismade and PWD northern zone special project unit senior deputy director Mohd Yusup Zahidin.

Due to the massive jams, PWD will hold daily press conferences at the Penang Island City Council's office to report the progress of the road changes due to the closure of Hilir Sungai Keluang 1 and Lebuhraya Kampung Jawa stretch along the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

The road was closed since last Saturday to facilitate the construction of a flyover across Sungai Keluang for the Bayan Lepas Expressway (BLE) project, but triggered massive traffic congestion this morning due to the weekday rush hour.

Lim said PWD proposed two alternatives, either a partial closure of the road or total closure of the road while they complete the construction of the flyover along that stretch.

After considering the safety of the motorists, we have to agree to close the road for the construction because we do not want a repeat of what happened two years ago, he said.

In 2013, before the completion of the second bridge, a portion of a flyover connecting to the bridge in the same area collapsed, killing a motorist who happened to be driving by at that time.

Lim said from now onwards, the police and city council officers will assist to disperse traffic in the area especially during rush hours in the morning and after work.

We also want PWD to ensure that the road diversion is done smoothly so that the crisis does not continue, he said.

PWD is also holding a dialogue session with the public on the road closure and the diversion routes on Wednesday at 8.30pm at Sunshine Square hall.

Mohd Yusup said there were no issues during the weekend as there was less traffic then, and that today's gridlock was because drivers still were not acclimatised to the changes.

Most motorists are not used to the new route so there is confusion with some still using the old route and causing a jam, he said.

The road will remain closed for at least another five months pending the completion of the flyover which weighs 14,000 ton and spans a total 390m.

In the road diversion, all traffic from George Town heading to the airport and Batu Maung must use Jalan Tun Dr Awang via the Bayan Baru roundabout instead of the coastal road.

As for traffic from Batu Maung heading to George Town, they must use Jalan Permatang Damar Laut via the roundabout and Jalan Tun Dr Awang.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue personnel view a terrain map in Jayapura in Papua province on August 16, 2015 as they search for a missing passenger

Rescuers raced Monday to reach debris in remote eastern Indonesian mountains believed to be from a plane that crashed carrying 54 people and cash worth almost half a million dollars.

The plane operated by Indonesian carrier Trigana Air lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday afternoon in bad weather on a short flight from Jayapura, the capital of Papua province.

The ATR 42-300 twin-turboprop plane was carrying 49 passengers and five crew on the journey to Oksibil, a remote settlement in the mountains to the south of Jayapura.

Also on the plane was 6.5 billion rupiah ($470,000) in cash, which were government funds being transported by postal officials for distribution to poor families, according to the head of the Jayapura post office.

But the plane disappeared about 10 minutes before reaching its destination, soon after requesting permission to start descending in heavy cloud to land.

It is just the latest air accident in Indonesia, which has a poor aviation safety record and has suffered major incidents recently, including the crash of an AirAsia plane in December with the loss of 162 lives.

On Monday a search plane spotted debris engulfed in smoke near Oksibil and another aircraft was being sent to check. Villagers had already reported seeing the plane crash into a mountain on Sunday and spotted wreckage.

A team of rescuers, including troops and police, were heading to the area on foot but will have to battle through dense forest to reach the remote site, which is at an altitude of about 8,500 feet (2,600 metres), according to officials.

"The area is steep and is covered by dense forests... There is no road, no access at all," said Papua military spokesman Teguh Pudji Rahardjo.

There was no word yet on whether anyone might have survived the crash.

- Angry families -

Relatives of passengers were becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of hard news, with some shouting "We want confirmation!" and throwing a table at a crisis centre set up by Trigana Air at Jayapura airport.

"My family and I have been gathered here for hours. We want to know the fate of my brother, Kepi Deal, who was on board the plane," Rifan Wea, one of about 100 relatives at the airport, told AFP.

"We want to know whether he is dead or alive."

After the plane failed to land at the weekend, Trigana Air sent another flight over the area to hunt for it but the aircraft failed to spot anything due to bad weather.

Captain Beni Sumaryanto, Trigana Air's service director of operations, said the weather was "very unpredictable" in the area where the plane went missing and he believed bad conditions had caused the crash.

Small aircraft are commonly used for transport in remote and mountainous Papua and bad weather has caused several accidents in recent years.

Last week a Cessna propeller plane crashed in Papua's Yahukimo district, killing one person and seriously injuring the five others on board. Officials suspect that crash was caused by bad weather.

Trigana Air, a small domestic airline, has experienced a string of serious incidents and is banned from flying in European Union airspace.

Last year's AirAsia crash was one of two major air accidents that Indonesia has suffered in the past year alone.

The second incident happened in June when an Indonesian military plane crashed into a residential neighbourhood in the city of Medan, exploding in a fireball and killing 142 people.

The aviation sector in Indonesia is expanding fast as the economy booms but airlines are struggling to find enough well-trained personnel to keep up with the rapid growth.

Revelations by BN spokesman show Najib meddled in 1MDB probe, says Azmin

The Malaysian Insider2 hours 10 minutes ago Share 2 Tweet PrintDatuk Seri Najib Razak "deliberately interfered" with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) investigations, going by revelations from Barisan Nasional's (BN) communications director, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said today.

He said BN strategic communications director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan's interview in The Sunday Star yesterday showed Najib had resorted to the "drastic action" to "save his own skin".

"From Rahmans account, the prime minister unleashed a flurry of action in order to prevent himself from being prosecuted.

"We take it that this flurry of action refers to the PM sacking Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and four ministers, replacing at lightning speed the attorney-general Tan Sri Gani Patail, disbanding the 1MDB task force and presumably ordering the IGP to unleash his own flurry of action raiding, arresting and transfer of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers and interrogating Bank Negara personnel.

"What Rahman has said essentially means that the prime minister had deliberately interfered with an ongoing investigation that was being undertaken by the 1MDB special task force comprising the highest echelons of the nations law and regulatory agencies," Azmin said in a statement, adding, "To my mind, such an interference may amount to criminal acts both under the Penal Code and the MACC Act (Section 186 and Section 48 respectively)". Azmin - Putting words into people mouth.. flurry of actions also could means getting PAC to be involved, tasks force of MACC, Police, BNM etc.. why would PM do these if he were to hide things. It like saying PKR claims on getting rid of Tan Sri Khalid is due to "betterment of Selangor" ... what betterment is PKR refering to as it created a rift between The PKR components specifically with PAS and to certain extend with Sultan of Selangor

Malaysia needs such leaders who are responsible, accountable, ethical and has basically a good character. The question is how and when can those bad apples be put aside before they get even more rotten and spoil the whole basket.

Under one term Selangor already manage to turn from red to black and Selangor reserve keep improving since then. It shows that we can still rescue our country by putting it under the right person.

Keep it up Selangor and Azmin! Good work, at least no need to hope for donations to improve state infra and welfare. How come only opposition states with surplus?? Any BN-run states recorded higher surpluses??

Why would anyone donate to Malaysia or Najib personally?

Why did we need foreign donation???

Why would the Prime Minister accept personal donation personally into his personal account???

Then quickly withdraw the money and close the account???

AS a Selangorian, I am really proud to have efficient MB like Khalid & Azmin. And our respect to our Tuanku Sultan Selangor for putting his trust on capable MB like Khalid & Azmin. We all pray that Selangor will continue to have 'good MB'.

Bravo Azmin. This is what we want to hear, increase state fund & reserve. If you can increase productivity and at the same time time, increase the state reserve & fund, this is what we call efficiency. Good works Azmin.
