New Store Opening Formalities
• In the early hours of Wednesday, 29th November 2017, Doug Jones opened the floor welcoming colleagues, dignitaries,
suppliers, guests and proud members of staff in celebrating this BIG moment
• Assisting Doug Jones with the ribbon cutting ceremony were Ward Councillor of Fourways, David Folley, Massmart Holdings

Trading Context
• Makro’s 21st store, Riversands, is located north of Fourways, close to other affluent residential areas such as Chartwell,
Dainfern and Steyn City, and value-driven township Diepsloot
• Store size measures 23,263m², and boasts an uncluttered trading space of +16,500m², while stocking an impressive + 68,000
SKUs – carefully selected to cater for the community within which they trade
• The store services a primary retail shopper across LSM 6 – 10, and secondary wholesale / commercial shoppers across LSM

• Makro continues to roll out their ‘BIG on Life’ brand philosophy,
in the successful launch of the newly developed ‘ flagship’ store
• A world-class store of the future, ensuring a one-stop shopping
experience
• Innovation at its best, the store is built to be environmentally
sustainable by producing renewable energy via 890 solar panel
shaded parking bays, along with 250 skylights and LED lighting
brightening up the wide aisles, as well as ozone-friendly, closed-
door refrigeration

Store Layout
• Store layout steers shoppers on a slower-paced shopping journey and is predominantly made up of general merchandise
(60%) as you enter the store, food (30%) positioned at the far right of the store, and liquor (10%), with its own separate
entrance
• 70 till points accommodate shopper volume - 62 service retail shoppers and 8 service wholesale / commercial shoppers
• 7 till points are available in the liquor store

Store Interior
• The interior is clean and bright, with spacious aisles to accommodate shoppers with their trolleys and staff with their
forklifts / hoists
• The store is easy to navigate, with clear departmental and category signage, and gondola ends display promotional items
with side panels stocked with related merchandise

Store Interior
• Low profile shelving has been introduced to ‘hero’ areas such as Health & Beauty, Baby & Toys, and Homeware
• Island-style fridges have been introduced in the Butchery / Fresh & Frozen Food sections, as well as island-style units in the
Bakery / Fresh Produce sections
• All features that encourage shoppers to slow down from the normal rush of buying general merchandise and dry groceries, to
more relaxed browsing

BIG on Food | BIG on Fresh
• The introduction of food increases foot traffic, basket size and attracts new shoppers to the store, especially the value-driven
shoppers from Diepsloot
• The groceries and fresh section is cleverly located near the bulk tills and online collections point, as the store does attract a
large number of Food Traders, and is geared for bulk trading

Private Label
• Private label, a key focus area for Makro, is prominently featured in-store, through an expanded selection of private,
exclusive and Walmart shared brands across general merchandise and food

BIG on Convenience
• Other innovations of significance are the Mugg &
Bean Quick Service Restaurant, a Walmart
branded Money Centre, ‘browse online’ touch-
screens, ‘browse and shop online’ digital hub, a
wine tasting room in the liquor store, and an online
collections ‘drive-thru’ point outside

BIG on Community | BIG on Service
• Makro Riversands is not just about the store, it’s also about
investing in staff from the local community, creating more than 420
permanent jobs and another 200 for peak periods
o Staff are easily identified and only too happy to assist shoppers
• Serving the community is regarded as integral to Makro’s corporate
social investment programme. Makro Riversands hosted a separate
event, which took place on 07th December 2017, where much
needed contributions were handed over to four earmarked CSI
partnerships within the community they serve i.e.
o Hope Worldwide (SUCCEED), Shout Foundation, Tomorrow
Trust and Gift of the Givers Foundation
