Making Inferences with Advertisements

What is an inference?

An inference is an educated guess that we make based on the information that is right in front of us, combined with our own experience.

OBJECTIVE:

• You will work in groups to analysis various advertisements to discover the message within the advertisement.

• Your group will use explicit evidence from the advertisements to justify your inferred analysis of the message.

• Your group will then be able to write a 30 second speech in which you teach your classmates the advertisement's message.

• Finally, will work with your group to create your own advertisement that conveys a message but without explicitly stating it.

Today you start work as an advertising executive!

Information from the text

Things you already know

(schema) An inference!

Let’s try it!

What is happening in this advertisement?

How do you know that? What are the clues?

What did his parents get him?

Who does the car belong to?

LET’S GET STARTED!• With your group, look at the advertisements in the

folder.

• Work with your group to infer what the advertisement’s message is.

• List the clues (explicit evidence) and your background knowledge that supports the message.

• Write a 30 second speech in which you tell the rest of the class 1) what the message is and 2) what clues lead you to that analysis.
