Making Electricity

How do we make electricity?

What is electricity?

• What do you see happening?

• What does the battery do?

• If we are going to make electricity, what has to happen inside the wire?

What do we remember about magnets?

Where is magnetic field strong? Weak?

#1 RULE

• These magnets are STRONG.

• You should have a paper plate taped to the desk.

• #1 YOU MAY ONLY MOVE THE MAGNET AROUND OVER THE PLATE

Try it - Record in Notebook• [1] Get the biggest number you can. Each person

in your group has to be able to get (close) to this number.

• [2] Get a small number (you still have to move).• [3] List at least three things that help make it

bigger or smaller.• We’ll list these on the board (biggest numbers;

smallest numbers and things that matter) - What is happening in the wire? What is moving the magnet doing?

• We may look at using more wire.• Look at flashlight.

If you finish this, we’ll give you another wire to see if you can make even bigger numbers.

My number: ___________ What made it even bigger:

Drawing

On this picture draw a lineconnecting the words to thepart of the flashlight.

Draw a double-arrow showing what piece moves and in what directions.

How is what we did like what the flashlight does. How does the flashlight work?

What is happening inside the wire?

What makes the electricity? What changes?

Electricity and Magnetism Are Closely Related

• Moving magnets creates electricity

• Moving electricity creates magnets

• And yes, you can do both
