Adult & Child Programming

Adult and child campers partake in a wide array of indoor and outdoor camping activities designed to meet each campers ability level. Our daily engaging hands - on activities include: swim lessons, physical fitness, sports, arts & crafts, music/theater, boating, fishing, and nature activities. On top of our fun filled daily activities, campers experience how to conquer tasks despite their challenges. Life skills and social skills, are encouraged throughout the session to encourage independence and healthy relationships. Both the children’s sessions and adult sessions include a choice activity such as board games, crocheting, clay work, poetry, animal tracking etc, during the day to peak each camper’s interest. Each evening ends the day with a camp wide themed activity where campers will have the opportunity to socialize with like peers at dances, talent shows, game show nights, outdoor movies and more! “Making friendships that last a lifetime.”

Camp Marcella has been in operation since 1947 and largely maintained by the Lions Clubs of New Jersey. Camp Marcella provides a safe space for persons of any ability level to enjoy nature activities with a few comforts of home. Those who participate in programming at Camp Marcella will create memories of a lifetime and life-long friendships. We do this through our staffing, environment, daily & evening programing, family centered cabins & meals, skill building and building relationships.

Challengers Camp – Young Adult Session One and TwoJuly 22nd to July 28th and July 29th to August 4th 2018

This camping session is designed for adult persons (Age Groups 18 to 28) who have physical or intellectual challenges. Adults in this session will have the opportunity to socialize with their peers through a variety of activities designed to meet each camper’s individual needs. Campers will have some choice in their schedule to attend their favorite activities whether it is sports, swimming, hiking, music and enjoying our evening campfires.

Challengers Camp – Youth and Teenager Session Three and Four (Age Groups 6 to 17)August 5th to August 11th and August 12th to August 18th 2018

Camp Activities are designed to meet the individual needs of campers. Small group activities are planned to engage children while working on fine and gross motor skills, socialization, and providing a traditional camping experience. Children will have the opportunity to explore camp’s natural setting with hands on activities.

One or Two Week Camp Program Sessions available.

Blind/Visually Impaired Camp – Youth and Teenager Session Three and Four (Age Groups 6 to 17)August 5th to August 11th and August 12th to August 18th 2018

Camp Marcella is traditionally known for its’ excellence in programming for campers who are blind or visually impaired. Campers will experience traditional camp activities designed to meet their needs as a person with visual impairment. Campers will engage in fun activities with like peers to create an unique bond with someone who lives with similar obstacles. Campers will feel a sense of belonging that they will take home throughout the school year, having a network of peers to connect with for a lifetime.

Dates “Financial Assistance” A Limited Amount of Partial Scholarships are available for the Blind/Visually Impaired - Pre-Teen and Teenager Camping Sessions for qualified campers that reside in the State of New Jersey based upon financial need and/or hardship. No scholarships are available for Out of State campers. If you need financial assistance, please request a financial aid application from the Camp Director.” Fees are non-refundable.

Camp Marcella aims to go above and beyond a traditional residential camp experience for typically developing campers and for those with differing physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. Counselors bring campers to a variety of daily activities that include: Boating & fishing on our lake, Swimming lessons in our heated saline pool, Physical education on our manicured field, Music & theater program in the Rec Hall featuring a stage, Arts and crafts in a dedicated barn with porch, Game room with bowling alley, pool table, ping pong, air hockey and more, Nature in our dedicated nature barn with porch overlooking the lake, Life skills/Home Economics in our “home away from home” cabin, Board game time in our air conditioned library! Late afternoons incorporate specialized activities such as all camp swims, and choice skills activities where campers can choose to learn a new skill from juggling to poetry! The fun doesn’t stop on rainy days! With our indoor and outdoor space there is plenty of room to keep everyone engaged regardless of mother nature’s plans.

Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner are hosted family style in our dinning hall or buffet style in our outdoor picnic area. Menus are created based on nutritional value and dietary restrictions. Campers are taught table manners during meal time as well as healthy eating habits from washing hands to portion size. Healthy snacks are available mid-day along with cold water and gatorade to aid in recouping from warm weather.

Cabins sleep up to 16 campers and 4 counselors. Counselors have separated sleeping area and bathroom from campers within the cabin. Each camper has their own personal space with cubby for his/her belongings. Camper bathrooms are located in the front of each cabin with sinks and bathroom stalls. Showers are conveniently located in our shower house on cabin row. Each cabin has a family room in the front with a bookcase and table full of social and independent activities. A front porch allows campers to enjoy the natural environment and have a place to socialize while visiting other cabins.

Directors Krystyn & Dan have been working and running camps for over a decade. Krystyn is a PhD candidate in education, former YMCA Program Director, sits on state boards for New Jersey Association for the Education of Young Children (NJAEYC), and Association for Blind Athletes of New Jersey (ABANJ), holds teaching certificates for P-3 and K-12 Teacher of the handicap as well as a consultant for both camps and school age aftercare programs. Dan is a certified High School Mathematics teacher at a Vocational Technical School, Red Cross CPR/First Aid trainer, Curriculum Developer, sits on the state board for ABANJ, and a former Paralympic Athlete.

Program staff consist of college students working in their discipline of music, theater, art, science/nature, etc. Counselors are high school graduates, college students or professionals who focus on careers in psychology, social work, education, or occupational/physical therapy. Our certified RNs, Chefs, Directors, Assistant Directors, and Behaviorist, hold appropriate licenses, professional development and work experience to lead our college aged staff and work with our camper population.

All staff go through extensive background check, have stellar references and attend our pre-camp training program. Staff are not only taught the basic behavioral skills of positive discipline and CPR/FA but the importance of providing camper independence and social skills while building their self esteem. Staff learn how building positive relationships between their campers and with counselors benefits all. One counselor always remains with their camper group throughout the day during programs to ensure all camper needs are consistently met.
