This two day intensive workshop was designed for visual artists and animation students/profes-sionals, who were interested in extending their skills in experi-mental animation and interested in finding inspiration in the work of contemporary artists in the field. In a combination of theory and practice, participants dove into the theoretical and practical context of experimental anima-tion and got to apply their fre-shly gained knowledge to han-ds-on activities under personal consultation with the artist.

Leonardo Carrano (Rome, 1958). After studying at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts, he started his ca-reer as a painter and graphic artist. In 1980 he got his first prestige recognition with the Lubian Prize awarded by Renato Guttuso. Since 1992 he has been working with experimental animation cinema. His works, resulting from the combination of diffe-rent techniques and languages, experimental and half-way between the abstract and the referential, soon attracted the attention of critics and were se-lected for major festivals in Italy and abroad (The Film Festivals in Venice, Rome, Locarno, Montreal, Paris, Annecy, Zagreb, Casablanca, Shanghai, Bei-jing). His animated films have frequently been bro-adcasted in some RAI programmes such as “Blob” and “Blob cose mai viste”. In 1994, we provided the digital scenography for the program L’ANGELO. In his work, Carrano has also collaborated with well-known and popular composers like Sylvano Bus-sotti, Giorgio Bastianelli, and Ennio and Andrea Morricone.

His oeuvre AETERNA is an experimental animated film, originating from the sensations aroused in the author, from listening to Mozart’s Requiem. The sections of this famous mass are interpreted throu-gh 14 films that create an organic and variegated whole using animation techniques and expressive languages.
