Welcome to the Islands YMCA Aquatic Program!

We look forward to working with you and your child throughout the summer of 2019 and hopefully many more to

come! We know there are many choices when it comes to swim lessons, and we thank you for choosing the YMCA

of Coastal Georgia. The following information will help you understand the

procedures and policies regarding swim lessons. A careful reading will answer many questions and help you

prepare for your time in swim lessons. Together, we can work to give a positive growing

experience for your child that will last a lifetime. We’re looking forward to a wonderful summer!

Thanks,

Jacqui Overholt

Fitness & Aquatics Director

Please get a pool brochure from the front desk so that you are aware

of our aquatics department policies – It is full of great information!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Please be sure your child has showered & used the bathroom prior to entering the pool area.

Please inform the instructor about any circumstances in your child’s life that may affect

his/her performance in the lesson.

Please plan to arrive a few minutes early so that classes may begin and end on time. Lessons are only allotted

a specific time slot for pool use.

There are always lifeguards on duty. If you hear them blow their whistle or make an

announcement, please stop what you are doing & listen to their directions.

Your child’s lesson will meet on the bench outside of the small pool each session. Children are not allowed in

the pool without the instructor. Your child will have the same instructor each lesson (unless there are

extenuating circumstances). When the swim lesson starts, please take a seat or step away from the pool area. Some children may learn

more when the parent is out of sight. This will help your child concentrate more on the lesson & the instructor.

Dry land lessons may be used in an event of bad weather for no more than 1 session.

If a lesson gets cancelled after 20 minutes it will not be rescheduled. The remaining time may be spent in a dry land session indoors.

PROGRESSION

Children will receive a certificate of achievement on the last class of each (group) session. Our swim program is

progressive, allowing each child to advance at his/her own rate. It may be necessary for them to repeat the same

level before moving on. This is not an indication that a child is slow or falling behind. The levels are not designed for

children to pass through quickly—it is common to stay in one level anywhere from 2-4 sessions. Usually the

instructor will be able to give you an indication of where your child will be near or by the end of the group session.

CANCELLATIONS

Group Lessons: In the instance of inclement weather, a makeup lesson will be scheduled for each day cancelled during

group lessons. Make up days are scheduled for FRIDAYS and may be taught by a different instructor. If a minimum

number of participants for a class is not met within 3 days of the 1st group lesson, then the class will be cancelled &

you will receive a voucher to use at the Islands YMCA. If your child misses 4 or more lessons from a group session,

you will be offered the option to withdraw from that class & join another or receive a voucher to use at the Islands

YMCA (Subject to approval from the Aquatics Director).

Private & Semi-Private Lessons: If you need to cancel a private or semi-private lesson,

please do so 24 hours ahead of your scheduled lesson. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before the scheduled

time will still be responsible for the full amount of the lesson.

ITEMS RECOMMENDED FOR SWIM LESSONS

The following items are recommended to ensure that your swimmer will have a fun-filled and safe

lesson. (Please label all personal belongings with a permanent marker!)

water bottle

cap or hat

sunscreen

swimsuit/swim shirt/trunks/rash guard

towel

goggles

extra change of clothes (if desired)

plastic bag (for wet items after swimming)

**If your child is not potty-trained, then they MUST wear a swim diaper AND an additional

layer of protection.**

VALUABLES/LOST AND FOUND

Do not bring ANY items of value such as (but not limited to) cell phones, other electronics, games,

toys, etc. There is a designated area for Lost and Found items.

Please check this daily— unclaimed items will be donated on a bi-weekly basis.

The YMCA will not be responsible for the loss of valuables or personal property items.

ILLNESS/HEALTH

If a swimmer is ill for any reason, please do not attend swim lessons. It is our policy not to accept

swimmers when any communicable disease is present. This is a preventive measure to protect other

swimmers. We ask that you do not enter the pool if there are signs of: fever, frequent or severe

pain, frequent coughing, Conjunctivitis, vomiting, diarrhea, lice, etc. Swimmers with communicable

diseases such as (but not limited to) Strep Throat, Chicken Pox, Flu, Ringworm, etc. must also be

kept at home. In these instances, please notify the YMCA immediately so that other participants

can be notified of exposure.

MEDICAL TREATMENT STANDARDS/GUIDELINES

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia is committed to providing your child with a safe and healthy experi-

ence. Our staff is CPR and First-Aid Certified. We will contact the parent, legal guardian and/or

emergency contact immediately should care be given and/or the services of a physician are re-

quired.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

A swimmer’s behavior is a great concern to us. We expect all swimmers to respect, listen to, and

follow all staff’s instruction. We also expect our staff to treat the swimmers based on the charac-

ter values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility. Just as we expect the staff to treat par-

ents with dignity and respect, we expect the parents to treat the staff in the same manner.

Any act that could be considered dangerous to swimmers or staff is grounds for immediate

suspension or dismissal.

How can I help my child learn to swim?

BE POSITIVE: Swimming is fun, and it is a life-time sport. Provide positive reinforce-

ment for your child.

ENCOURAGE: Children may not understand or have the coordination to perfect a skill.

Ask questions, observe whether they understand the concepts, & let us know if we need

to approach a particular skill in a different way. Try not to make comparisons to other

children. Each child will progress at a rate that is uniquely his/her own.

PRACTICE…PRACTICE…PRACTICE: As in every new skill learned throughout our lives,

practice is required to be proficient and successful. Repeat key words & phrases that

the instructor uses. Let your child “show off” their new skills! Also, review the safety

tips, rules, and techniques learned in class.

HAVE FUN: Interact with your child. Get into the water with them outside of lessons,

and encourage them to reach new goals each time. Show your child how much fun you

are having in the water too! They learn by watching the best example they know—YOU!

TAKE THEM TO A SWIM MEET: Most children have a wonderful time at swim meets. It is

a positive thing to do— show your child other children who are proficient in swimming

so that they know it’s possible!

INSTRUCTOR CONFERENCES: Try to keep conversations about your child between you

and the instructor only. It is better to talk to the instructor about your child’s perform-

ance in private rather than in front of them, especially if you have a major concern.

Children listen to everything we discuss & sometimes misinterpret what we say.

SIGN UP FOR ADDITIONAL LESSONS! Consider group and private/semi-private lessons!

We want your child to know how wonderful they are doing! We can find something great they

did during class…even if it’s just putting their toes in the water for the first time!

Thank you for joining us at the Islands YMCA!
