Makati Medical Center extends its gratitude to the people who have extended their helping hand since the MetroManila community quarantine was implemented. Since March 16, 2020, medical and food supplies came in drovesfrom the generous hearts of various individuals and groups, some of whom chose to donate anonymously.

Thanks to them, our healthcare warriors were able to brave the COVID-19 frontlines with a full stomach, wearingthe right protective equipment. Some donors also lent their facilities to our frontliners so they would have a place tostay in outside the hospital after their work shift.

With a grateful heart, MakatiMed thanks the following donors who provided for our healthcare heroes from Marchto August 2020:

5 times neck pain is a pain in the neckAnd how to fix them, according to MakatiMed’s

Department of Orthpaedics.Sometimes, all it takes is just oneaching body part to throw off yourentire day.

Take neck pain, for example. A stiffneck limits your head’s range ofmotion, while the pain brought aboutby the sudden jerking of the headcould leave you with a headache, shoulder and back strain.

On the average, neck pain is rarelyserious and often goes away on itsown after a few days. To make sureyou aren’t directly contributing to it,top hospital in the Philippines MakatiMedical Center (MakatiMed), throughits Department of Orthopaedics, pinpoints the five things you do everyday that could be causing your neckpain—and what you can do aboutthem.

Sitting all day. Who would havethought that such a sedentary activitycould be the reason behind youraching neck? “Sitting behind a desk oron a plane on a long-haul flight forhours leads to postural strain in theneck, back, and shoulders,” saysAnne Kathleen Ganal-Antonio, MD.“Prevent muscle strain by standingup, stretching, and walking after longperiods of time. Also, practice goodposture. Sit up straight, with your feetflat on the floor. If working with acomputer, adjust the placement ofyour monitor and keyboard to acomfortable level.” Dr. Ganal-Antonioadded that too much bending down ofthe neck increases the stress on theneck, leading to pain. It is best to keepthe neck in a neutral position.

Exercising. Ironically, even an activelifestyle can give you neck pain.Certain workouts (like crunches oryoga positions) and sports (golf, swimming, cycling) can strain yourneck if done poorly or in a wrongposition. “Ask your trainer or coach tohelp you execute the proper form for

your workout or sport,” advises Dr.Ganal-Antonio. “You can also easeneck pain with this simple stretch.Facing forward, slowly bend yourhead to the right. Hold for threeseconds, then go back to your startingposition and slowly bend your head tothe left. Hold for three seconds thengo back to the starting position.Repeat 10 times.”

Sleeping the wrong way. Bedtime issupposed to be restful and relaxing—until you wake up after sleeping in aposition that strains your neck. “Whenyou sleep on your stomach, your neckis turned to one side. Holding thatposition for hours strains your neckmuscles, giving you that stiff feeling inthe morning,” she points out. “Trysleeping on your back, a with a pillowunderneath your knees to relax yourlower back, or on your side with apillow between your legs. The kind ofbed or pillow type is a subjectivepreference.”

“Laying your head on a too-high pillowalso strains your neck; replace it witha lower one,” adds Dr. Ganal-Antonio.“Travel pillows for the neck are alsohelpful as they support your headwhile you sleep sitting down.”Interestingly the lack of sleep has an

indirect effect on the neck. “Sleep isthe time when the body repairs itself,”says Dr. Ganal-Antonio. “When youdon’t sleep enough, you becomesluggish and achy.”

Carrying heavy bags. Besidesaffecting your posture and the way youwalk, lugging a heavy bag strains thetrapezius muscle on the top of yourshoulder, and affects nearby bodyparts like the neck and back. “To easestrain on your neck, shoulders, andback, lessen the amount of thingsinside your bag,” Dr. Ganal-Antonioexplains. “Also, look for bags with widestraps because they distribute theweight of your bag over a wider area.Cross-body bags also evenly distributethe weight of your bag. When usingbackpacks, have this close to yourback to provide support. Avoid justusing one strap, as this makes theweight and posture uneven.”

Using a smartphone. Whetheryou’re taking a call with your phonecradled between your ear andshoulder, or are catching up on yoursocial media feeds by looking down atyour phone, you can bet your neck’sgoing to feel the strain later. “We callthat text neck,” says Dr. Ganal-Antonio of the latter. “To preventstraining your neck from reading fromyour phone, take mini-breaks to moveand stretch your neck and back, orlimit your cellphone use to 20minutes.” To address the former, hesuggests switching your cellphonebetween your left ear and right earinstead of favoring one side to takethe call. “Gentle stretches, a soothingmassage, a cold compress for 20minutes, and over-the-counter painmedication can also alleviate neckpain. But if the pain lasts for more thana week and makes simple movementsdifficult to do, see your familyphysician immediately,” says Dr.Ganal-Antonio.
