Our newsletter is long overdue, but as most of us are well aware, time goes much faster than our hands, feet and thoughts! So we're starting 2012 off on the right foot and reserving ourselves to keeping up constant communications with you, our valued customers. Last year was an interesting year both from the fisherman's standpoint and inside of MAK Surfcasting. From the fishing side of things 2011 had a lot of ups and downs. The striper coast was again dotted with hot regions separated by areas of so-so fishing. The hotspots for last year were the Jersey Shore in the spring and then again for an extended per iod from mid-November through the holidays (Snooki not withstanding). Montauk seemed to have it's moments particularly around the end of September and the beginning of October but seemed to lack the fire that it's had over the previous two falls.

Welcome to MAK.

Inspiration comes in all shapes

and sizes.

I have been asked many times

what the inspiration for our

company name was, and what

does MAK actually stand for.

Does it describe the product??? is

it an acronym for our materials???

is it coordinates for a secret spot

that only I know???

NO, NO, and NO

Allow me to introduce Maryanne

Rose, Abigail Rose, and Kyle

Rose, my three children.

There is no better inspiration,

there is no better reminder of why

we do what we do, and there is

not a better way of making them

feel a part of what I do

than to name the company after

the ones I love most.

So, thank you to Maryanne,

Abigail, and Kyle....the heart and

soul of MAKSurfcasting inc.

Sincerely,

David Rose

President

They make a series of hauls with a seine (large net) and count how many newborn stripers are in each haul. After they survey all of these tributaries they derive an average from the numbers and this is used to determine the success of that year's spawn. A video detailing this process can be found here. The point of injecting all of this “boring” science into this newsletter is to tell you that 2011's YOY index or yearly average was 34.6 which is the fourth highest in the survey's 54 years, this is encouraging news!

At MAK Surfcasting we take a strong stand on conservation and it's important for all striper fishermen to keep the facts straight in their heads. Yes, the news of a historic spawning year is encouraging, but it does not mean by any stretch of t h e i m a g i n a t i o n t h a t t h e population is restored. It will be years before these fish reach spawning age and there are a few things to keep in mind between now and then and beyond. Last year's big numbers prove that there is a decent stock of spawning fish out there and we need to do what we can to make sure as many of those big females as possible return to the Chesapeake again, a trend of big spawning years would really mean great things for the future of the fishery.

The other thing to keep in mind is that even a modest spawn is capable of making a huge impact on the future of the striper population.

The 1982 class was a bit over 4.5 and the moratorium was implemented to protect that class which was the catalyst for the striper boom we enjoyed from 1997 to 2005. If we do what we can to protect the 2011 class, it's actually hard to fathom how good things could get.

The MAK Surfcasting Three Tube Bag is the most versatile bag a mobile surfcaster or wetsuiter can carry. The three large tubes offer more than enough space to cover your bases for the day or night, after careful consideration as to which plugs will have to stay home for the trip of course! The Three Tube is lightweight, even when it's packed to the gills the doubled-Dacron construction makes this bag virtually impervious to jagged rocks and barnacles and resists tearing and fraying like nothing else available today. The six inches of Velcro (compare with the measly three most custom bags feature) keeps the bag shut even under the harshest conditions. This also helps when packing extra-large plugs because the generous swath of Velcro will still give you more than you need to safely cover and secure your biggest and burliest plugs. And as if all that isn't enough, the bag features six bucktail holders and an 8-inch front pocket with more than enough room for a few packs of shads, Slug-Go's or other similar baits.

Also back in stock are our 11-loop Bucktail Pouches, these are made with same exacting eye for detail and unwavering standard of quality that all MAK products must meet. Each loop is rated to hold bucktails or tins weighing as much as five ounces, there is also room in between the loops for a bag of rubber trailers or shads. The pouch is affixed to your belt using MAK's unique Triple Overlap Velcro System. This means it's easy to attach and remove the pouch but virtually impossible for it to come loose accidentally. This triple overlap technology is something that you'll only find on MAK products—it's a real frustration saver if you ever need to remove something from your belt!

We're kicking off the 2012 show season with one of our favorite shows . The Jersey Shore Surfcasters (JSS) are a club of hardcores that really know what's gnawing at the souls of all surfmen. This experienced crew will be bringing in some of the best plugbuilders, tackle shops and (ahem) surfbag and accessory makers on the east coast. In addition to the great product selection, they also trot out the best lineup of surfcasting seminar talent you'll find on any show's bill! The show is being held Saturday, February 25th at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And the coast of admission is just $10!

JSS Surfday

The , our consumer line of premium surfbags and accessories will be expanding by leaps and bounds in 2012. The success of our trial introduction in select tackle shops along the coast in 2011 was very encouraging and the feedback has been nothing short of fantastic. We will be introducing the line into dozens of shops before the official start of “surfcasting season” please help us spread the word and ask for it by name in your favorite shop.

MAK Angler Series

I really love this show. This was the first show we presented MAK Surfcasting. The members of The Jersey Shore Surfcasters club are a class act. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all surfcasters to attend. I look forward to seeing everyone again this year.
