What is .NET? Funky Tech Explanation- A Microsoft product available for download online

(Microsoft .NET Framework).

IT Explanation- The .NET Framework is a technology that supports building and running the next generation of applications and XML Web services. The .NET Framework is designed to fulfill the following objectives: To provide a consistent object-oriented programming environment whether object

code is stored and executed locally, executed locally but Internet-distributed, or executed remotely.

To provide a code-execution environment that minimizes software deployment and versioning conflicts.

To provide a code-execution environment that promotes safe execution of code, including code created by an unknown or semi-trusted third party.

To provide a code-execution environment that eliminates the performance problems of scripted or interpreted environments.

To make the developer experience consistent across widely varying types of applications, such as Windows-based applications and Web-based applications.

To build all communication on industry standards to ensure that code based on the .NET Framework can integrate with any other code.

.NET Application Purpose Eliminate the risk of accidental removal of settings placed by another department using

SGASADD. Give users access to only the attributes and cohorts they need to manage. Establishing and restricting types of attributes/cohorts as term based or carry-over. Attribute and cohorts are properly ended. Always logging the user of change (the Banner table does not have this).

Carry Over vs. One Time“Carry- Over” or “Multi-Term Based”

When inserting Carry-Over attributes or cohorts, the program will insert it in the term designated and then copy forward this attribute/cohort and other Carry-Over attributes to the maximum effective ‘From’ term.

Example: Student has a 'One-Time' only attribute in 201230 Spring. If Admissions needed to add a 'FLNG' attribute to 201210 Fall, the program would add FLNG effective 201210, 201230 AND 201250 which is the maximum effective ‘From’ term to allow FLNG to be active till end of time.

Note Attributes and Cohorts are managed separately.

Typical Attributes: FLNG - Foreign Language COSC – Computer Science EMST – Emerging Stars ATHS – Scholarship Athlete PBAC – Post Bachelor

Carry Over vs. One Time“One-Time” or “Term Based”

The same principal works with 'One-Time' or term based attributes or cohorts. In the example above, if ‘FLNG’ was the only attribute in 201210 and the user needed to insert ‘ETLR’ in for 201230, the program would copy ‘FLNG’ to 201230 and 201250 and insert ‘ETLR’ in 201230 only.

• Typical Cohorts:• ATEP - Athletic Training Ed• LC* – Learning Community• PACE* – PACE• PCOM – Pre Communication• RC* - Residential College• TCERT – Teacher Certification
