It was nice to hear from Incipient Skipper Dave Craigie over the Independence Day holiday. Ha ad first mate, Joyce, were reporting in from Michigan where they were waiting out some high winds before proceeding to the North Channel in Canada for the remainder of their cruising vacation. Dave reported that they’ve been having a terrific time with fine weather and good friends on the Great Lakes.

We are short on volunteers for the CSSA Junior Regatta July 25. Remembering the flood of July 2007 The lake went from 9’ down to 9’ up in about a month.

<--On left note the water is nearly up to the deck. David Craigie actually tied his boat off that Cypress tree in front of the deck at one time. We could use some of that water now!

On the right, Jerry Lojka does some kind of stretching exercise :+) I refuse to publish the next photo in the series. It was-n’t a pretty sight. Note the handi-capped parking sign behind him.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2009 THUNDERBIRD BOATHOUSE HOSTS 7TH ANNUAL

CAST FOR KIDS FISHING DERBY

Fleet Captain: Karen Thurston

We are having a fun racing series for the Commodore’s Cup this year. The turnout has been good, even when we have gales or very little wind. Now that July is here (wow, where is the summer going?!), the winds typically are not as strong. This just makes it fun to see our TSC racers tweak their boats to get the most out of them. It is just as exciting to cross the finish line having beaten the boat next to you at a crawl as it is to go blazing through at 10 knots on other nights. If you are at all interested in racing, give me a call. We can get you on a boat. Or, bring your own boat out and increase the competition! It is nice to see the power boaters look at all the sails on the water. I just know they are envious (or maybe the blank stare stems from the thought that “why would anyone want to work that hard on a boat?”). I want to thank all the racers that are participating this season for the great turnout, the great attitudes, and the great compe-tition. It has been really nice seeing that many sails on the water at once. Sail Fast, Note: See below for an interesting way to retrieve a halyard

The program at this month’s meeting promises to be very interesting - our own Mike Klatt and Britton Rife from the Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative will be mak-ing a presentation based on their research project on wind energy here in Oklahoma - energy efficiency, in-stalling your own wind and solar systems at home (or possibly on a boat?), wind farm development in Okla-homa, etc. A cruise may be on the agenda for our August club meeting! If there’s enough interest from the club, we’ll be chartering a boat for an Oklahoma River Cruise. We need 35 people to commit and the cost will be $12 per person. We would leave Regatta Park at 5:30pm sharp (you should be there by 5:15) and return at 7:45pm. Refreshments sold on board. SEE MORE INFORMATION ON PAGE 9………….

It’s not too early to start thinking about Island Day. We’ll mark the passing of summer at our September meeting with an island bash. Island garb, island food, island music, …. If you have any good ideas for Island Day, please let me know!

Page 4 2009 JUNE KIDS SAILING CAMP

What a terrific June Kids’ Sailing Camp! Along with near perfect weather, we had 15 terrific students along with a great cadre of volunteers. The students were: Jake Boulter Tommy Lindley Eva Sparks Varun Ennamuri Al Miller Jeremiah Johnson Cordell Glover Aaron Agrawal Ellie Thurston Brock Trotter Megan Portwood Justin Burk Kylie Beasley Cody Hale Kayla Portwood Volunteers were: Karen Thurston Delanie Beevers Ed Hale Roger Elliott Rod Horton Raymond Glover Will Beasley Danny Proctor, Lake Patrol Marilyn Friend Jocelyn Peterson Vernon Green Rick Eager Don Davis Gehrig Thurston Te Woei Poon Richard Beevers We also thank Phil Moershel for delivering the donated canoe which was terrific and a special thank you to Justin Tuck for helping to get the safety boats ready for the year and along with Orville Fisher for washing all 12 of the prams prior to the camp. I thank all the volunteers for their great work. Each day went like clockwork, thanks to the camp’s daily schedule developed several years ago by our good friend Howard Haines. This class also had more perfect exam scores than any class I have been associated with over the past seven years. And what great sailors! With 15 newbie sailors on the water we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but having several students from previous years was very helpful as they formed an experienced core of sailors that were most helpful with such a large class. We used 11 or 12 of the prams each day along with several Sunfish, the Minifish, and the Dolphin. On Monday and Tuesday we had strong winds from the south but as usual the cove was protected well and it caused no problems for the swimming, capsize drills, and the rowing, paddling, canoeing, and towing of the boats behind the safety boats. On Wednesday, the first day we actually sailed, the winds were just perfect to do the ‘destination’ sail and we were able to sail across the lake and back twice on their first day of sailing, another first for our sailing camp. Thursday and Friday were light air days and provided lots of practice time on the water to prepare the kids for their tacks and gybes on Saturday to show their parents, siblings, and friends their sailing skills. Thanks again to all the volunteers and students who made this 2009 June camp such a success! Les, Principal Instructor See next two pages for photos from the camp

Hi Les and all TSC members, Just a few words to let you know how things are going this summer. Perhaps you will find a few paragraphs to put in the next mainsheet. If you want to go boating early in the season, if you want easily navigable waters with abundant anchorages that are super easy to find and have great holding, if you like the "frahnk, frahnk" sound of Great Blue Herons, the bellow of frogs and the chirping of crickets, if you like free ramps and free parking and available marinas for whatever you might need. Then you should consider a cruise on Kentucky Lake where all this and more is available. What makes it all the better is the time of year that we are here; Late May through mid June. The temperatures are cool, the water is warm and the crowds have yet to show up. Other then on weekends in some of the bigger bays, you can find all the solitude that you could ever possible want in the Land Between the Lakes side of Kentucky Lake. Most of our time here has been in the company of other Trailer/Sailors. We have sailed with members from Mis-souri, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Nebraska. Some were old friends from up north, some were new, but in the end we are now old sailing friends and it is likely that we will see each other on the water again some time. There are many highlights to this trip, but perhaps the most memorable is the ease of getting around on the water here. Big and small anchorages are everywhere, so close in fact that you have to do a little daysailing in between so that you feel like you have gone somewhere that day. While we have been on the water for three weeks, I have yet to stay a night in a marina. And while this appeals to me personally, I understand that some boaters desire an occa-sional night at a dock to take care of necessities. So it works for everyone here; stay on the hook or stay at one of the many available marinas, eat on your boat or go to one of the many low key to fancy resort restaurants that are avail-able. Whatever works is available here. Contrary to many that I have spoken to who have boated on Kentucky Lake, the temperatures and the winds have been delightful and we have had many days of pleasant sailing. Later in the summer though, it is reported that the temperature soars, much like Oklahoma, and the winds fail to blow. So we have probably picked the three primo weeks to be here. On Saturday, June 13th we will be heading for higher latitudes; Traverse City MI. I will have more on that at a later date and how our sail north to Canada went. Ed. Note: I talked with David on Sunday, June 21 and they were in MI. We miss everyone and hope that the club has an active summer and new friendships are made all around. Enjoy the pictures. Fair Winds, David & Joyce Photos below, ‘transportation’, Hiwy 68 bridge, Dave/Joyce on sandbar between lakes, and Incipient ‘starboard tack.’

Captains Roger and Les would like to arrange a TSC Okla-homa River Ferryboat ride this year. The Devon boats are 65’ long 14’ wide and powered by two 200hp John Deere diesel engines. The boats have comfortable seating and are heated and air-conditioned with ample room inside and out-side as well. They can handle 40-45 passengers, and if we can get 35 to sign up we will have the boat to ourselves! The boats leave from Regatta Park or Meridian Landing and the round trips cover about 14 miles with the transit of two locks upstream and two going downstream. The roundtrip takes 2 hours and 45 minutes. Cost is $12 for round trip ($11 for seniors on the weekends) There are sodas and snacks available for sale. We are planning a River Cruise in lieu of the Saturday August 15 Monthly Meeting if we get enough interest. Again, “yes” the boats are air conditioned. Please let your TSC board members know if you would be interested and if so please purchase your tickets and we will take the 1730 (5:30PM) ferry trip and have a TSC member as our Captain. We will return to Regatta Park at 2015 (8:15PM.)
