As I write this, my term as NAEC President winds down and we get closer to the annual convention. It seems only yesterday I walked into my first
Board of Directors meeting in Boston. It has been an incredible experience to be a part of such a great team at the NAEC.
I would like to extend my gratitude for NAEC’s Executive Director, Teresa Witham, for working so hard towards the Board of Director’s goals in the last few years. It is the behind the scenes work from Teresa and the NAEC staff that is the life blood of the organization that keeps us
running day to day so we can enjoy all of the benefits of the association.
The past year has been full of challenges and opportunities as an organization. We survived a hurricane, we completed a new executive director search, we are preparing to launch new programs, we mapped out a new 3 to 5 year strategic plan and we still continued to provide all of the existing programs, certifications and benefits that has made NAEC great.
The future of NAEC will be in good hands as Teresa hands off the Executive Director role next year to Alesa McArthur. What has impressed me is Alesa’s ideas towards NAEC’s future and her past association experience. This is a very exciting time for NAEC.
The volume of volunteer activity for NAEC is incredible. I would like to personally thank each and every one that participates on committees and volunteers their time. If you have not participated, get involved, our association can benefit from you voice and your passion.
It has been a humbling experience to sit beside industry giants during my term on the BOD and as President. Thank you for this once in a life time opportunity. I would like to thank my BOD classmates for sharing their journey with me. Two board members that have gone above and beyond have been LJ Blaiotta and Joe McNally, if you see them, tell them thank you for stepping up when needed and doing an incredible job.
NAEC’s BOD leadership is in good hands with the passing of the presidential baton to Gary Schuette. Gary and I have worked on having a seamless transition and he has been nothing but incredible during his term as Vice President.
Thank you for all the support and friendship I received during my tenure on the Board of Directors. I have met more people, strengthened more friendships and had more incredible experiences than I would have dreamed.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Atlantic City!

Monday starts off with the Welcome Reception followed by a party hosted by our industry charity, the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation. Founded in 1984 by Michael Bruno, the company initially manufactured hoists to lift mobility equipment such as scooters and wheelchairs into cars, trucks and vans. “We require and certify our dealers via our own technical training, but CAT Certification provides a more comprehensive understanding of the products available and the best practices needed for accessibility technicians,” said Bruno’s Dealer Training Manager Luke Bebeau. Bruno’s training qualifies for continuing education credits under NAEC’s CAT Certification Program.

Another key to Bruno’s success is implementation of a lean production system approximately ten years ago. “We want a clear understanding of our customer needs and ability to eliminate waste in our processes, and lean manufacturing is the tool that we use to fundamentally improve our business. Since the launch of lean initiatives, we significantly improved our delivered quality, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction -- all while reducing inventory and containing costs,” explained Pat Foy, Bruno’s Director of Customer Experience.

What in the mid-1990s was a small home elevator company now has more than 250 employees under the leadership of President Erin Ennis. Britnee Irwin joined our NAEC family in July of this year as our Office Assistant. Britnee’s responsibilities include Membership Development, working to help new members join NAEC as well as maintain our current memberships. Britnee will be taking on an administrative role of our Vertical Transportation Management Program (VTMP). She will also be responsible for the day to day office duties and Accounts Receivables.
Britnee has over 14 years of customer service experience and project management, organizing and planning events. While volunteering on the PTO Board, Britnee led
the planning and organizination of multiple school functions, fundraisers and events. Additionally, she worked in the pharmacy industry as a geriatric specialist working closely with the patients and their families. Britnee’s hard work and dedication will be a benefit to our NAEC team!
Britnee is married to Bryan and they have three children, a daughter who is twelve, and twin boys that are seven. Bryan and Britnee stay busy keeping up with their children’s sports. The kids enjoy playing softball and their oldest competes in archery. In their spare time they like to get away to their farm with the kids to enjoy fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) provides accreditation services in the areas of product and personnel certification. The CET Certification program has been accredited by ANSI-ISO-IEC 17024 since September 2011, making us the first in the elevator industry. This accreditation assures competency and reliability. It also promotes consistency and demonstrates equivalence of assessments via mutual recognition based on peer review. ANSI ensures the CET program continues to conform to the essential requirements.

Why should you pursue and invest in NAEC’s Certification Program for your company?
The CET Certification adds credibility to your employees. Certified mechanics have had their practical skills and on-the-job training verified during the certification process. This process will demonstrate your employee’s knowledge of codes and applications. There are fewer Vocational Schools in the United States teaching skills that were previously taught in High School (i.e. Welding, Electrical, Wiring and Construction). NexGen is a group of young professionals who serve NAEC and its members of the elevator industry by bridging the gap between new and old, providing education, leadership development and peer networking with the goal of facilitating the transition between generations, for the future enhancement of our industry as a whole.
On August 23-26, a group of us, 17 NexGen men and women, gathered in Tucson, AZ for a few days of education, team-building, laughs, and the start of many friendships. Our group consisted of a split of suppliers and contractors and included many new faces from the previous two NexGen Summits.
The trip started off with a welcome reception where everyone was able to meet each other and relax in a laid back atmosphere. It was easy to see very quickly the camaraderie that would develop within the group.
Day two consisted of an all-day education session with Leadership Coach, Larry Hart. Larry’s education style allowed constant group sessions that gave everyone the opportunity to interact with all members of the group and get different insights about each of the topics. We all learned various tools to become a better leader in our company.
The next day started with an education session that reviewed the Project Management section of the VTMP program. As a group, we discussed several topics and followed a presentation that taught us a number of different areas about managing projects in the workplace. Later that night, we all got together at a nearby ranch to try our hand at team penning. This allowed us the opportunity to both unwind and work together as a team.
This was the most well attended NexGen Summit to date and we look forward to seeing even more new faces at the next event! If you would like information on NexGen and join us on our next event, contact [email protected].
