Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter 2012 Boothbay Harbor - Rockland Newsletter #1 season this did not bring out any new racers. Maybe another reason for the increased interest was the agreement signed by MLBRA in mid-spring to have Exodus Film Group of Venice, California and North Yarmouth, Maine lm and promote lobster boat racing as a reality television series. They promised they would be at all the races and in fact purchased a Holland 32 with a tower on it as a lming platform. There is lot of people anxious to see if this takes off. As usual there were rumours oating around during the winter, some about boats gearing up with new en- gines and a couple of new boats being built. Some of the rumours were getting answered at Boothbay. Wes Shute of Stockton Springs was there, but without his boat DAYDREAMER [South Shore 30, Chevrolet]. He said that he was still waiting on his mechanic and his hope of being at Jonesport was now changed to Searsport in mid-July. He also added that he did not BOOTHBAY HARBOR/ROCKLAND – Well the sea- son is underway and two races have already been com- pleted, Boothbay and Rockland, on 16 and 17 June. There were a couple of new boats making their rst appearance of the year, others coming out for the rst time in several years, and some questions about where others were. Bottom-line, there was plenty of excite- ment during the weekend of racing with a number of real close nishes. This past winter there was some renewed interest in lobster boat racing and the reasons vary. The Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association [MLBRA] tried to spur interest by adding back a gasoline class for en- gines over 502 cubic inch, but with without turbos or alcohol. This was done because to compete in an open class, 502 cubic inch, with turbos and alcohol, would be cost prohibitive for most, probably in the neighborhood of $250,000. Unfortunately, at the rst two races of the e start of the Diesel Free-for-All at Rockland with KIMBERLEY BELLE out ahead for a short time.

have 2,000-hp in the new engine. Steve Johnson’s new version of the car-boat, which involves a Corvette and looks like the new bat-mobile, was also a no-show. He simply said he broke it, and did not have time to get her ready. We heard that there were internal parts and pieces of the engine that were now exposed, which is never a good sign. Steve added that she should be fi xed for the races in mid-July. Every year on the eve of the fi rst race of the sea-son at Boothbay Harbor, numerous boats gather at Brown’s Wharf on the east side of the harbor. This year there seemed to be about 20 boats tied up, which was more than they have had in years past. Sign-up was at Brown’s on Saturday morning and when we were ready to race there was a total of 50 boats entered, which was a 15 percent increase over the previous year. The forecast was for a great weekend, but no one told the weather gods, as we woke to overcast skies, a 10 to 15 knot breeze and temperatures in the low 60s, but that did not hamper the racers! There were some no-shows. Galen Alley’s FOOL-ISH PLEASURE [Custom 30-footer, 638 cid Merlin] was in Rockland, but opted not to race in Boothbay fol-lowing a run in with a former harbor master for going too fast through the moorings several years ago. Alley’s issue is that when he puts his boat in gear she is doing over 15 mph. Since Boothbay has a new harbor master, one with a better understanding of the racers, Alley will hopefully return next year. LORNA R. [Riley/Adrian Beal, 1973, 496 Chevrolet], the wooden boat used for a mould to make FOOLISH PLEASURE, and run by Galen’s brother Rocky, was also not there. Bruce En-gert’s THUNDERBOLT [Custom South Shore 30, 496

cubic inch Chevrolet] was still on the hard, waiting on the engine mechanic. Last year Bill Grant’s DOUBLE G. [Crowley 36, 410-hp Sisu] was having a tough time getting by Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35, 350-hp Cummins] and it was said that he was not com-ing to Boothbay, but would be at Rockland. MELANIE JEAN [wooden 38-foot Willis Beal, Diesel: 300-hp Caterpillar] owned by Todd Hubbard of Perkins Cove, was on the hard in a shed in Ogunquit getting some much needed repair work done on her hull. It is unsure when she will be out this year. There were two new boats at Boothbay. Matthew Merchant of Jonesport just launched CHIX DIG IT, which is a Calvin Beal 44 powered with an 800-hp Cat-erpillar diesel and would be racing in Diesel Class N. Alan Dugas of Yarmouth brought out his new wooden 38-foot John’s Bay Boat powered with a 600-hp Cum-mins. She would be racing in Diesel Class J and the Wooden Boat race. There were some older boats out racing for the fi rst time. David Grant of Farmington sold VENOM [Mus-cle Ridge 28, 250-hp Sisu] at the end of the 2010 racing season and did not race last year. This year he returned with EASY MONEY, a Northern Bay 28 powered with 218-hp Sisu and would compete in Diesel Class A. Others included: Matt Carter’s HOWARD, a wood-en J. E. Jones built 33 footer powered with 454 Chev-rolet gasoline engine. She would race in Gasoline Class C. John Albaum’s BUG HUNTER, a Young Brothers 30 powered with a 226-hp Isuzu diesel would com-pete in Diesel Class A. Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL, a Calvin Beal 36 powered with a 650-hp Scania, would be competing in Diesel Class J.

Last winter David Taylor of Boothbay Harbor, who had been racing as long as I can remember, was diag-nosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away in early spring. His boat MISTY [Crowley Beal 33, 650 hp Sca-nia] was sold to Chris Smith of Swan Island. For the last several years Chris had been racing the Repco 30 LINDA CAROL in Gasoline Class B, but for a week-end of racing with his wife she just was not big enough. He had been looking for a little bigger boat and this one was perfect. As a tribute to David Taylor, Chris ran MISTY down the course as a moment of silence was held just before the start of the day’s races. The fi rst races of the day are for Boothbay Region lobster boats. Only HOWARD was entered in the Gas-oline Class. Class B, Diesel Power – up to 499 hp was won by GOVERNOR [Calvin Beal 34, 375-hp John Deere], owned by Marshall Farnham. In Class C, Die-sel Power – 500 hp and over MISTY took fi rst place with BLUE EYED GIRL second. There were three Work Boat Class races and in the fi rst one (Work Boat Class A, skiffs 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp) there was only one entry, RED’S REVENGE, Jake Hodgdon. In Class B, (In-board, outboard or outdrives, 30 to 90 hp), it was Mar-shall Spear’s J-BIRD [16-footer, O/B, 50-hp] crossing a couple of boat lengths ahead of the second place fi n-isher. The wind was creating a little chop and as the competitors of Class C (Inboard, outboard or outdrives, 91 hp and over) came up the course they were crash-ing through waves. First over the line was SUPA GUPP [Beal 23, 225-hp Honda], William DeBery, followed by CASCO MISS [Eastern 22, 130-hp Honda], Dave Johnston. There was not a very big turnout in the Gasoline Classes, which has been the trend in recent years. There was just one entrant in Gasoline Class A (4 and 6 cyl-inders), CRY BABY [D&L Boat Works 25’, 292 cid Chevrolet], two in Class C (V8, 376 to 502 cid, 24 feet and over), BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 cid Chevrolet], Randy Durkee and HOWARD. No one was entered in Classes B (V8, Up to 375 cid, 24 feet and over), D (V8, Over 502 cid, 28 feet and over, Naturally aspirated, no bolt-ons) and E (V8, Over 502 cid, 28 feet and over, Turbos/superchargers). All three racers came down together and it was no surprise to see CRY BABY leading the fl eet with BLACK DIAMOND second, but fi rst in her class. Six boats came to the line for the Wooden Boat Race and it ended up a real battle between Chris Page’s ABI-

Boothbay Harbor/Rockland - Maine Lobster Boat Racing Newsletter - Page 3.

One of the closest battles of the weekend was between ABIGAIL & CARTER and EMILY GRACE in the Wooden Boat Race

One of the new racers in Diesel Class A was David Grant’s EASY MONEY, a Northern Bay 28 powered with a 218-hp Sisu.

Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE and Bryant Ciomei GENERAL II , both of Stonington, battling in Diesel Class E.

GAIL & CARTER [42-foot John’s Bay Boat, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] and Bill Lowe’s EMILY GRACE [30-foot Bill Lowe, 300-hp GM]. There was only a few feet sep-arating their bows at the fi nish and the win went to AB-IGAIL & CARTER. In third was Don Drisko’s MER-GANSER [Calvin Beal, Jr., 1977, 230-hp Yanmar], which has been sorely missed the last several years. As usual there was some great racing in the Diesel Classes. The fi rst battle we wanted to see was EASY MONEY and Steve Johnson’s LYNN MARIE [Jingle Johnson 28, 220-hp Diesel], in Diesel Class A [Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet] which was won easily by EASY MONEY. Another boat we have not seen very often has been David Wiberg’s SANDRA DEE [Crowley 28, 315-hp Cummins] from Stonington, which won Class C [236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet]. David’s son, Nick re-powered MISS KATIE [Holland 30] this spring with a 355-hp Cummins, but still did not have enough to best Sidney Eaton’s KIMBERLEY BELLE [AJ-28, 370-hp Volvo] in Class E [336 to 435 hp, 24 to 33 feet]. The next close race took place in Diesel Class G [436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet] which again involved EMILY GRACE who was now competing with SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34, 436-hp, Sisu]. There was again only a few feet between the stems and this time EMILY GRACE grabbed the win. Over the past several years there has been a great battle in Diesel Class I between Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE [Libby 34, 690-hp Ive-co], MISTY, Chip Johnson’s THREE STARS [Mitchell Cove 35, 650-hp Mack] and Scott Wood’s WILD ONE [Crowley/Beal 33, 892-GM]. LISA MARIE has been the dominate boat, but at times the others of grabbed the fi rst place spot. The four were still real close half way down the course, but in the end WILD ONE was fi rst over the line followed closely by LISA MARIE and then MISTY. A boat we usually only see at Harp-swell and Portland is Rick Albertson’s ALL SET [Hol-land 38, 1,200 hp MAN]. She was the only entrant in Class L. SIZE MATTERS [Libby 41, 750-hp Iveco] Dixon Smith of Jonesport continued his dominance of Class M with a win, followed by Shane Hatch’s JILL CAYDEN [Calvin Beal 44, 700-hp Iveco]. Diesel Class N, saw Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] just getting by Tom Clemons’ 4 GIRLS [Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] with ABI-GAIL & CARTER third. The winner of the Gasoline Free for All was CRY BABY with BLACK DIAMOND second.

Nine boats lined up for the Diesel Free-for-All which was won by WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, but a close second was KIMBERLEY BELLE, and ALL SET was third. Just the top three boats from the Diesel Free-for-All came to the line for the Fastest Lobster Boat and ended up with the same results. As soon as the races were over most boats head-ed right for Rockland and began preparing for the next day’s races. Rockland almost became a dry town. Sunday was a perfect day with bright sunshine, and a nice cool breeze. It was going to be a fun day of rac-ing with 70 boats competing. Even before the races started big news was circu-lating that Alfred Osgood’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Northern Bay 36, 900+-hp Mack] was not racing after developing engine trouble just days before. It was not known what happened but the boat was heading to Jim Minott’s shop in Brunswick to be repaired and hopeful-ly she will be back for the Searsport/Stonington races. There was one new boat racing, Scott Keenan’s DEAR ABBIE, a Northern Bay 38, powered with a 610-hp Cummins. He would be competing in Diesel Class J. Some other boats entering for the fi rst time included: Wayne and Colyn Rich’s WIDE OPEN, a Robert Rich built 26-footer, 225 gas engine, and would compete in Gasoline Class A. Wesley Gove’s ALL JACKED UP, 210-hp Caterpillar, and Jeff Gove’s DOWNEASTER, Mariner Beal built 38 footer, 210-Cummins, were both entered in Class B; Cyrus Sleeper’s QUEEN ANNE’S REVENGE, a Northern Bay 36 powered with a 265-hp diesel was in Class D; and Nick Geyer’s OCTOBER SKY (x-MILLER TIME), a Wayne Beal 36, 500-hp Caterpillar, and Jeremy Tyler’s ALL IN, Northern Bay 38, 500-hp Volvo, both in Diesel Class H. In the Work Boat Classes there was no one in Class A, but there were nine boats in Class B and this was won by J-BIRD. Again there as a little chop on the course and the spray fl ew as Class C made their way to the fi nish line, which was won by CASCO MISS with a TOUCH OF MADNESS [Sisu 22, powered with a 496-hp Crusader, Ian W. Adair, Vinalhaven] second. In the Gasoline Class A two boats came to the line and at the fi nish it was CRY BABY fi rst with WIDE OPEN second. In Class B Wayne Rich’s FROSTY PUNKIN [General Marine 25, 350 Crusader] took fi rst over MARDON [Webbers Cove 29, 350 Chevrolet V-8,

Donald Hilt Jr., Rockland]. In Class C the only entrant was BLACK DIAMOND. There were no entrants in Class D and in Class E, FOOLISH PLEASURE made her debut with a speed of 57.7 mph. In Diesel Class A EASY MONEY bested LYNN MARIE and Johnson Boyce’s RELENTLESS [Beal 31, 225-hp John Deere] took third. In Class B seven boats came to the line and MERGANSER took fi rst with Ed Glover’s GRACIE [Calvin Beal, Jr., 160-hp John Deere] a close second. Five boats were on the line for the next race, Class C, and it was SANDRA DEE tak-ing the win with Stonington’s Mitchell Eaton’s BRIAN MITCHELL [Young Brothers 33, 300-hp Caterpillar] second and North Haven’s Ben Sparhawk’s PATRICIA LYNN [BHM 31, 320-hp Volvo] third. Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF [Libby 34, 300 hp Caterpillar] contin-ued his winning ways for the weekend with another fi rst in Class D. Second went to Johnathan Jones’ JAYLIN LUCAS [Duffy 35, 318-hp Volvo]. MISS KATIE put up a valiant effort but just did not have enough for KIM-BERLEY BELLE in Class E. A renewed battle from last year was MS. ROSE and DOUBLE G. in Class F. As they sped up the course it was MS. ROSE by only a couple of boat lengths at the fi nish. Now came Class G, which had been a real tight race the day before with EMILY GRACE upsetting SEACOCK. Today it was another close race, but SEACOCK came out the winner by just feet. The dominate boat in Class H has been Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM [Northern Bay 36, 410-hp Sisu] for the last several years, but today he got a real race from Jeremy Tyler’s ALL IN, which fell just short at the fi nish line. Three boats came to the line for Class I and it was anyone’s guess who would cross the fi nish line fi rst. Who made adjustments and would they push too far for the win and blow an engine? Again the top three boats were all within a boat length of each other and it was LISA MARIE crossing with a half a boat length between her stem and that of WILD ONE. In Class J David Myrick continued his weekend’s winning ways with another victory with DEAR ABBIE second and HEY BABY [Northern Bay 36, 610-hp Volvo, Carl Gross, Vinalhaven] third. Just Justin Philbrook’s RIS-ING SON [Calvin Beal 38, 375-hp John Deere] was entered in Class K and just Robert Young’s CYNTHIA LYNN [Northern Bay 38, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] in Class L. Two boats came to the line in Class M and it was SIZE MATTERS besting JILL CAYDEN. Four boats were in the last diesel class race of the day, Class N, and

One of the battles that is always close is between Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE and Tom Clemon’s 4 GIRLS.

at the fi nish line it was 4 GIRLS edging out ABIGAIL & CARTER for the win in Class N. In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was FOOLISH PLEASURE streaking to what looked like an easy win when there was some coughing and sputtering and she died just a 100 feet before the fi nish line. However, she had enough of a lead and with her headway she did manage to just drift across before BLACK DIAMOND could cross. FOOLISH PLEASURE’S problem was the blower belt letting and this meant Galen was done for the day. Galen added that this was an easy fi x and that he would be ready for Bass Harbor. In the Diesel Free-for-All it was going to interesting as 4 GIRLS, CYNTHIA LYNN, KIMBERLEY BELLE and WILD ONE headed for the fi nish line. KIMBER-LEY BELLE jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold it. At the fi nish it was a real surprise to see WILD ONE edge out CYNTHIA LYNN followed by KIMBERLEY BELLE. In the Wooden Boat Race there were nine boats on the line, but the real race was between ABIGAIL & CARTER and EMILY GRACE. Again it was another real close battle, but it was EMILY GRACE’s day as she just edged out ABIGAIL & CARTER by a half a boat length, with MERGANSER a close third. In the fi nal race of the day, Fastest Lobster Boat, just four boats came to the line. Scott Wood, owner of WILD ONE, said that he did not want to tempt fate and decided not to race this one. At the fi nish it was CYN-THIA LYNN, followed by KIMBERLEY BELLE and 4 GIRLS. It was a great weekend of racing. At both races Exo-dus Film Group did extensive fi lming and said that they got some really good footage. Not only are they fi lming the races, but also interviewing some of the compet-itors. By the end of the year they should have some interesting footage. One new rumour that was circulating at these races involves James West, Glenn Crawford and his WILD, WILD WEST and Tom Clemons who had offered a 1,000-hp C-18 Caterpillar diesel engine. No one is re-ally sure how well this will work, but it could be very interesting. A C-18 weighs about 4,000 pounds with a gear and in a 28-footer that could be interesting. As we left Rockland it seemed like the project was a go and we can only hope she makes it out sometime this sea-son. Later it was learned that this project had been put on hold.

D&L Boatworks’ CRY BABY has dominated Gasoline Class A for several years and this year started no diff erent.

One of the prettiest boats on the coast is Don Drisko’s MERGANSER, built by Calvin Beal in 1977.

Colyn Rich skippers WIDE OPEN, a 26-foot wooden boat built by his great-grandfather Robert Rich of Bernard in the 1950s.
