Commodore’s CommentsA whirlwind summer of racing and on shore activities is under way on Beulah. Heat, then cool, and then thunderstorms have ushered in the first quarter of summer. We are now off to regatta season.

for such an impressive showing. You can find the results on the website. There were 19 Beulah boats out of 63 boats entered. What a strong representation.

July 4th we have the Pancake Breakfast and Games. This is a must attend event! It is a great time to see parents, children, grandchildren, and guests. There is catching up with those offspring making the pilgrimage back to Beulah. Then there is the Egg Toss which includes ALL of the above participants. It is so much fun.

Saturday the 7th is the LBSS fundraiser the Amazing Race. The sailing school student tuition only covers a portion of the LBSS costs, and the event proceeds help with the rest. From the Sailing CommodoreHello Beulah – Summer is cruising by, a second weekend of temps in the 90’s and golden pond is warming up! The racing action is heating up nicely as well, with lots of racing on Beulah and the regatta season kicking in to gear.

The C fleet has been busy, and representing really well. Ben Porter and some kid from Nagawicka pulled off a really cool double double in bringing home BOTH the MIR and C Nationals titles – way to bring it strong, Ben! The Nationals was aka Beulah-fest, as B boats finished 2nd and 3rd and 8th, while also taking bullets in four of the six races.

The C fleet also led off the Roble/Shea fundraising summer, raising over $15k in support of the cause at the C fleet party. Next up is the MC fleet party so we’ll see if they can match the C’s! Meantime, you can get your hands on some cool R/S swag in the form of hats and (Fred’s new favorite) buffs – if you want in on some of that, check in with Nancy Roble! All support very much appreciated – it’s been almost two years now since LBYC had us an Olympian so please pony up and let’s help Stephanie to be the next one!

As to the signal boat:

· It was the best of times, as Kutsch came through with a new and nicely larger gear box for the starboard side – installed, at our favorite price, FREE – thank you Kutsch!

· It was the worst of times, as I type it’s laid up and, with assist from LBSS, on the way to ET marine for some lower unit work, hopefully as you read it’s back in action.

#fairsailing update is that the whole program is going strong! Much evidence on the home front, and also at the C nationals. Look for an email with more details, as the quiz has gone live and the Nag presentation was recorded, we’ll be doing our version in July.

Two quick reminders:

· SEND PHOTOS – seriously, please do it right now – to [email protected]

· Make sure your traveling trophies get returned, engraved and cleaned

Thanks again to everyone that pitches in on the RC, we couldn’t race without you!

Keep sailing fast, and fair, and we’ll see you at the lake.

- Joe

I have many thank yous to hand out… Thank you to Pat and Ken Jarecki and committee for hosting the June 6th Wednesday night Cookout. Food was fabulous!

Thanks also to John and Molly Porter and committee for their Wednesday night “Mexican themed” Cookout and Tim Leroy for his delicious Margaritas, held on June 13th. I brought my grandson, Eddy, to the cookout and he couldn’t get enough of the tacos and black beans. Food was awesome!

Thanks to all who came to the June 9th C-fleet party and Roble/Shea Fundraiser to support Steph and her crew Maggie in their Olympic quest in Tokyo 2020.

My last thank you and final one, I promise, is to Elaine Reitz for organizing the 2018 Youth Nights at the club. The first youth night was June 14th and she called it Flip-Flops Night, it was a big hit!! The remaining Youth nights are June 21st, July 12th and July 19th. QUICK SIPS By Peg SanFelippo

In honor of the club’s 125th anniversary the wines sold by the bottle will be available to purchase by the glass at the June 30th party.

This will give everyone an opportunity to try some really terrific wines without having to purchase the entire bottle. Prices will range between $5 and $10 a glass. So take this opportunity to celebrate with a special glass of wine at a really special event.

We are planning on hosting wine and liquor tastings in July and August on Monday nights. More information to follow.

Peter Keck & Ben Porter Go Back-to-Back at MIR & Nationals Peter Keck (former LBYC member and father of current member and co-skipper of B-87, Alex Keck) is a four-time winner of the C Nationals - Once with Joe Skotarzak and Katie Porter Murphy, once with Andy Burdick and twice with Ben Porter. They broke the “never win the tune up rule” by winning the MIR the preceding week with this follow up victory. Competitors noted this duo was in a class unto themselves this weekend. From bad start to catching a leader from over a minute behind, the team was untouchable... (Excerpt from ILYA ScowLines article. Photos Candace Porter.)

House & Grounds Report by: Greg Thomas

Summer officially began on Thursday, June 21 and the House and Grounds Committee has been working to keep the club running at its full summertime capabilities.

Jim Kutschenreuter drilled a hole and installed a vent pipe from a portable air conditioner that will help cool the wine bottles in the bar storage closet. The machine approved at the last LBYC Board meeting keeps the wine bottles at an even 69 degrees.

The wine bottles share the bar storage closet with one of the main electrical panels in the building. Navigating electrical conduits allowed us to install the vent pipe in the bottom right hand corner of the photo.

Robert and Carol Klement have purchased a tree in memory of Carol’s mother, Betty Gehrmann. It will be located along the South property line in the front parking lot island. The tree is a fast growing, hardy, disease resistant maple hybrid called an autumn blaze maple for its brilliant red fall color. It also provides a silver green leaf during the summer providing unique appearance year round. A duplicate tree will be purchased and planted in the opposite parking lot planting island along the South property with the Klement’s sharing the costs with LBYC.

Thank You! Thank you so much for all the donations at the C Fleet Party and the Sidestays meeting! Your generosity

means the world to us! Because of you we are able to retain our coach through the summer. This summer is very important because the 2018 World Championship regatta, being held in August, will be our first opportunity to qualify the United States for a spot at the 2020 Olympics. We are 100% committed to achieving that goal and your support enables us to put 100% into our training to reach that goal. We proudly fly the LBYC burgee on our sail and are so grateful for your support!

Hudson de Tarnowsky home, Beulah Heights RoadRob Hudson de Tarnowsky has been coming to Lake Beulah each year since 1961 as part of a family legacy that stretches back to the late 1800’s. Rob’s wife Joelle also visited the lake back when they were dating in high school and college. The lake was significant to the character of the property and to the Hudsons’ personal history, so when it came time to design the new house, Rob worked from the concept of the lake as the hero. The idea was to capture a cottage feel and a home that settled into the lot nestled among the trees, making sure that every bedroom had a view of the lake. Dormer lake view benches, an integral screen porch, and art from family members add plenty of character and interest to the home.
