Landscape ReportA dead tree was removed near my homelast year, but another tree has not beenplanted in its place.

Over the 42 years since LBS was created, the existing trees have matured signifi-cantly, and we don’t need to replace all thetrees we are losing. As you’d expect, treere-planting is another large expense, withan average cost of $500 per tree. Our ar-borist has recommended that we set a treereplacement target of 50% of the treeswhich we remove. We also work closelywith our arborist to develop a planting listwhich includes a wide diversity of treespecies, to help insulate our tree popula-tion from future pests or diseases that tar-get one genus, as Emerald Ash Borer didwith ash trees. To get the best pricing in anenvironment of rising tree costs, we bundleall our tree installations and send a singlerequest out for bids once a year. The actualplanting occurs in late Fall, when temper-ature and moisture conditions for newtrees are usually ideal.

You did re-plant a tree near my home aftera dead one was removed, but why did youput it in a slightly different location?

After a dead tree is removed and the stumpis ground, thick roots of that dead tree re-main below the soil surface and make in-stalling another tree in that exact spotextremely difficult. As those sub-soil rootsslowly decay, the decomposition processalso removes nitrogen from the soil, andnitrogen is essential for the healthy growthof the new tree. That’s why we never re-plant in the same location.

Speaking of stumps, a tree was removedweeks ago near my home but I’d like toknow why the crews left the ugly stump.

Stump removal is done with specializedequipment and crews, and we make betteruse of our tree removal budget by holdingoff until we can “batch” a full day’s worthof stump removal work. It’s also impor-tant to understand that before stumpingcan take place, the tree contractor is obli-gated to contact the utility locating serviceknown as JULIE to mark the location ofelectrical and telecommunication supplylines, to limit the risk of damage to theseunderground utilities. The JULIE processtakes time, and occasionally, the JULIE

Trees are living organisms, and as is true with all livingthings, trees have lifecycles.LBS boasts a population ofover 10,000 trees, and eachyear some of them naturally

reach the end of their lives. Others suc-cumb prematurely to damage done bythe pest known as the Emerald AshBorer, or to fungal diseases such as Doth-istroma blight, Rhizosphaera needle castand Cytospora canker which take holdin conifer trees, especially those stressedby droughts in recent years.

An LBCHA Landscape operation hasbeen aggressively removing dead anddying trees. In 2016, as in each of the fiveprior years, we expect to remove over100 trees, and we expect this trend tocontinue or accelerate for a number ofyears in the future.

Today I’d like to answer some of the com-mon questions residents ask about ourtree removal and re-planting practices.

I have a dead or dying tree near myhome—why hasn’t it been removed yet?

Tree removal is expensive. It can easilycost LBCHA $500 or more to remove adead tree, and the costs depend on treetrunk diameter as well as difficulty of access for crews and equipment. All deador dying trees have been professionally assessed to determine their priority for removal, based on the threat they pose topersonal safety or to structures, as well astheir aesthetic impact. We are increasingreserve contributions for tree removalsover the coming years, and will eventuallyremove all dead or dying trees.

Bill ’s markings will reveal that using the stan-dard stump removal equipment poses toogreat a risk to essential underground util-ities, and we need to get creative withother stump removal options.

So once the stump is gone, what is the planfor the bare area where the tree used to be?

In some cases, your condominium associa-tion decides to use landscape enhancementfunds to create planting beds of shrubs orperennials where a tree had been sited. Inmost situations, however, once we verifythat the stump removal is complete, anorder is sent to the appropriate groundsmaintenance contractor to remove thestump grindings, add soil and turf seed andcover the area with “straw blanket” to pro-tect the seed as it germinates. Once the areahas been covered with straw blanket, youcan help the seed develop into turf if youmist the seed blanket daily using a sprin-kler head on your hose and water the newturf at least weekly during dry periods.

What can I do to help the trees near myhome?

The single most important contributionevery resident can make to preserve thebeautiful landscape investment we have atLBS is to water during dry periods, espe-cially July and August. Newly-planted treesare especially vulnerable to dry soils whilethey establish themselves in their new loca-tions. The most water-wise method to pro-vide our trees the moisture they require forgood health is to trickle water from a hosefor 15 minutes at a time at the soil level at3 or 4 locations around the tree ring. Thisshould be done twice a week for new trees, and weekly for established trees.

HELP

CONTROL

LANDSCAPE

COSTS

Watering trees, shrubs, perennials and turf once a week will optimize plant health, and that helps keep landscape costs in check. Please do your part to keep the LBS landscape beautiful.

ASK BEFORE YOU ACT!!

Thinking about making changes to the landscape around your home? Before you begin, remember to review your plans with your condo association’s

Landscape Representative, and complete a Landscape Variance Application if needed. The landscape belongs to the association - not to you personally - and the community has adopted rules to preserve the beauty of our shared grounds.
