Mahesh Babu (born Mahesh Babu Ghattamaneni on 9 August 1975) is an Indianfilm actorbest known for his work in Telugu cinema. Born to actorKrishna in theGhattamaneni family, Mahesh Babu faced the camera at the age of four as a childartist in 1979'sNeeda. His first leading role was in the film Rajakumarudu, which wasreleased in August 1999.[2]

After playing the role of a young Kabaddi player in the 2003blockbusterfilmOkkadu, Mahesh continued in this vein, gaining mass appeal and appearing in manysuccessful films such asMurari (2001),Athadu(2005),Pokiri(2006),Dookudu(2011),Business Man (2012) and Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu(2013).[3]

Mahesh Babu has worked in nine films as a child artist and in seventeen films as alead actor till date. He has won seven Andhra PradeshstateNandi Awards, threeFilmfare Best Telugu Actor Awards, three CineMAA Awardsand one South IndianInternational Movie Award. In addition to the films, he also endorses several brandsin Andhra Pradesh and South India. younger brother of actor turned producerRamesh Babu Ghattamaneni.[8] He also hastwo elder sisters, Padmavathi and actress-producerManjula Ghattamaneni and oneyounger sister Priyadarshini.[9] All siblings have acted in films as child artistes.Maheshs childhood was spent mostly in Madras under the care of his maternalgrandmother Smt. Durgamma and the rest of his family.[10][11]

His father made sure all the children spent sufficient time with him on location and onhis sets, especially during holidays. Mahesh many times said that this was where hisinterest for acting began.[12] The film sets were a second playground and he did nothesitate to face the camera when asked to do a small role in his brother RameshBabus debut film,Needa at the age of four.[12] Mahesh studied at St. Bedes School inChennai while continuing to attend his dads filming during holidays.[13] Few of hisschoolmates at St.Bede's were Surya (Tamil film actor) and Vishnuvardhan (Tamilfilm director).[14] Mahesh obtained an Honours Degree in Commerce from LoyolaCollege, Chennai.[15] Mahesh Babu acted in seven of his father's films as a child actor.

Personal life

Mahesh dated Bollywoodactress and formerFemina Miss IndiaNamratafor fiveyears.[16] She was his co-star in the movie Vamsi. They got married on 10 February2005 in Mumbai.[17] They have two children, son Gautam Krishna (b. 31 August2006) and daughter Sitara (b. 20 July 2012).[18][19]

Career

Early career (19791990)

He started his acting career by playing a small role in his brother Ramesh Babusdebut film,Needa underDr. Dasari Narayana Rao's direction in 1979, at the age of 4.[20] In 1983, at the age of 8, directorKodi Ramakrishnarequested him to play a role inthe filmPoratam since they were having difficulty casting for the role ofKrishnassibling. This was his first full length feature film.[21] Producer and director Dhoondy,one of the early backers of Krishna in his struggling days, watched a preview of themovie and was stunned to find out he was Krishnas own son and remarked that therewas a spark in him and he would become an excellent artist.[22]True to that

prognostication, Mahesh became successful as a child artist through varied roles. In

Sankharavam (1987) he faced the cameras with his father directing him for the firsttime.[23] Veteran directorA. Kodandarami Reddy directed him and his brother RameshforBazaar Rowdy (1988), where he won accolades for his acting.[24]Mugguru

Kodukulu (1988) saw him again team up with his brother and father, the fatherdirecting them all this time.[25]Gudachari 117(1989) reunited Mahesh with his firstfilm director Kodi Ramakrishna in a James Bond type of flick for which his dad, thelead in the movie, was famous.[26]Koduku Diddina Kapuram (1989), directed byKrishna again, had Mahesh in a dual role.[27]Balachandrudu andAnna Tammudu(1990) saw the teenaged Mahesh Babu completing his first innings on celluloid afterwhich he concentrated on his studies and went out of the public eye while lettingnature take its course through the awkward adolescent years.[28]

In 1999, Mahesh was re-introduced as a full-fledged hero with the movieRajaKumarudu (The Prince).[29]Directed byK. Raghavendra Rao and co-starring PrietyZinta, this movie was a debonair start for his career earning him Nandi Award forBest Male Debutant.[30] After the movie was released, both fans and the media startedfondly calling him "Prince Mahesh".[31] His next release Yuvaraju followed in the year

2000.[32] Directed by Y.V.S Chowdary, the movie did moderately well at the boxoffice completing 100 days in 19 centres all over AP.[33] In the same year, anothermovie Vamsi under the direction ofB. Gopal was released and this movie had

Namrata Shirodkarco-starring for the first time with Mahesh.[34] During the movie,the on screen couple Mahesh and Namrata started seeing each other in real life andthis relationship later resulted in their marriage.[35]

In 2001, his successful movieMurari, directed byKrishna Vamsi and co-starringSonali Bendre, was released[36] and earned Mahesh plaudits from all sections ofaudience and from critics.[37]He bagged aNandi Special Jury Award for his

The year also saw Mahesh working again with DirectorGunasekharand actressTrisha Krishnan for the movie Sainikudu.[57] In 2007, for his next venture Maheshembraced corporate film making in Telugu Film Industry. [58] He collaborated withUTV and with young directorSurender ReddyforAthidi which made him the firstcorporate hero in Telugu Film Industry.[59]He was paired alongside Amrita Rao.[60]

After Athidi, Mahesh devoted more time to family matters with a new toddler tospend time with, supporting and helping Namrata cope with her fathers illness andthen his death, followed by Namratas mothers bout with cancer and her death. Dookudu completed a successful run in 152 centres after 50 days and stands at 1stposition in Top TFI Films (With 66cr Share world wide)[69]CNN-IBNfor the year2011, declared him as theActor of the YearandDookudu as theHit of the Yearin asurvey conducted for Telugu films.[70] He also won his third Filmfare Best ActorAward (Telugu) for his performance in the movie.[71] He then costarred with Kajal

Aggarwalin the movieBusiness Man. The film was directed by Puri Jagannadh andproduced by RR Movie Makers, releasing worldwide on 13 January 2012.[72] Similarto his previous release, it took the largest worldwide opening [73]by collecting 18.73crores on the first day[74]and 62.94 crores worldwide in the first week.[75] For the firsttime in his career, Mahesh along with the directorPuri Jagannadh lent his vocals for asong in the project.[76] According to certain reports, Mahesh emerged as the highest
