The two shows I am going to compare and contrast are ‘Russell Howard’ and ‘The One Show’

CONTENTThe One Show

The One Show is known for being a general magazine show.The show is presented by Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley.Show starts at 7:00pm and ends thirty minutes later.It has been rated 3 stars.It is also number 22 from 30 in the last couple of weeks which gives them 4.41million viewers.Typical topics they cover: Celebrity interviews, Current Affairs, Crime and Wildlife, Food and Science, History, Health, Nature, Gardening. Russell HowardRussell’s show can be placed as a ‘general’ magazine show and the genre of it is comedy.The show is number 8 out of 30 and has 1.02million viewers over the last couple of weeks.During the show Russell gives his point of view of what is going on in the world and the news.The news and current events happening are not turned in to ‘jokes’. Both of these shows include chats with celebrities which obviously will help the programme gain more viewers and to even promote them. Part of the show is to have entertainment news in a way that will keep viewers updated but at the same time keeping them awake.

Also the two programmes try to connect with their viewers by having individuals who have gone through something in their life but the difference is that The One Show try to comfort you and maybe give you advice whereas Russell Howard’s show gives the individuals a pat on the back for over coming a situation they have gone through.

Russell Howard’s show is more of a ‘funny’ programme and is more laid back and consists of jokes and sarcasm whereas The One Show has more of a realistic, serious but sometimes funny taste to it. Russell has no auto-cute or talk back.

THE LOOK - SetThe set is colourful of where the presenters and guests sit. They are sat on a long corner bright sofa and have colourful blinds behind them and a big wide window. If you look at the table you can see it is quite modern and the lights on the set is beaming on to it. As you can see there is a board behind the guest and it say’s One this is a shortened version of the name of the programme which as you know is called The One Show. The set has vibrant colours which gives off a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

It’s ironic how the colour ‘red’ being the main colour of the show has also been used for channel BBC1 which as they always use it when advertising their programmes.

The Look - Set

This image shows BNP leader Nick Griffin and Russell Howard who had the whole audience laughing constantly with all the jokes he had.

Behind Russell is the royal crown of England because during the video he was making jokes about rap, the Queen and Camilla. To the right is the image of Russell ‘rapping’.

Lastly this image is about Russell imitating Cheryl Cole but he has changed the lyrics about him being in love with a fat man.

As you can see that The One Show has natural lighting whereas Russell Howard’s show is dark and they use spot lights.

Introduction and Ending – both shows Introduction – Russell Howard’s Good News starts by

showing him walking through large objects such as a radio, phone and there are words and quotes. The style used for this is a magazine and it also works well with the stop animation/cut out alongside the drum playing in the background.

Closing – Long shot of the stage showing the corner of the room where you can see the studio audience. Whilst the sound track is being played the credits begin to role, the background then turns into images which of newspapers which have been put together.

Introduction – Graphics is used to open the show. The background consists of different colours and the word ‘One’ appears which is separated then put together.

Closing – Zoom out of the studio which allows you to see the whole set and they also have the link to the website of the show.

The Sound

The One Show has a theme well known which debuts in 2006 and does not need to do up.

There is a variety of sound in the show this is to keep the viewers interested.

The theme tune, includes a happy jingle and involves one word which is ‘One’ and this was cleverly created as it tells you the name of the show and underlines the message of it being broadcasted on the BBC1 channel.

The Sound

Beginning – starts with a drum then the sound of a keyboard.End – audience clapping and cheering for Russell then an electric guitar follows.

Russell has many exciting sounds that play on his show but they are all funny as he adds them in when he is making a joke.

Whether something is funny or sad he always has a musical instrument or song to play.

The Audience

During The One Show the audience are never shown but they are always heard which makes it a television programme ,whereas in Russell's show they are seen and heard which makes it more of a comedic show. Even though The One Show do not show their studio audience the viewers at home still feel connected to the show as the presenters are always talking into the camera making you feel as if they are talking directly to you. Also at then end of the show they show a web link if the programme which enabled you to interact with them. Whereas, Russell’s show when it first begins shows the studio audience which initially you feel part of the show he too talks into the camera but it is almost like you are at a stand up comedy show. As Russell’s show is of a comedy genre it is common to see the studio audience as this is called a ‘performance’.

SummaryMy overall thought about the two shows are similar I like them both but the difference between them is that you have to think about your mood. If you need a laugh or bored at home Russell’s show is the one to watch it’s of a comedy genre and he involves everyone so you can never feel left out. His video’s that he creates like the ‘rap’ and the one of Cheryl Cole that show attracts lots of people. Whereas The One Show covers topics smoothly so you feel like you are getting the news but in the most relaxed and friendly way and as a bonus we receive guest stars for example Zac Efron. Both shows appeal to every individual but maybe the swearing in Russell’s show is a bit too much for certain people. The One Show can be educational and you don’t even notice it. Russell’s use of pre-inserts works extremely well with his personality and humour even more so his own opinion.
