During the event, students met with representatives from more than 50 organizations including the CaliforniaHighway Patrol, Universal Technical Institute, General Atomics, CEMEX, Mitsubishi Cement Corporation, GEAviation, Jack in the Box, Victor Valley College Automotive Technology Department, Cobra Kai Fitness &Mixed Martial Arts and Essential Home Builders.

Visiting the showcase for the f rst time, AVUSD Deputy Superintendent Trenae Nelson said she was amazed bythe “variety of opportunities” that were available to students at the showcase.

“Right now in the High Desert, there are over 1,000 jobs — that if you get technical training — you can walk intoa $60,000 year job,” Lovingood told students, before one of several panel seminars. “That means you can stayhere, you can buy a house and you can raise your family.”

Lovingood told the Daily Press that he was impressed by the “hunger” of students and parents from theSnowline Joint Unif ed School District who attended the annual event despite the district closing all schools onThursday due to inclement weather.

“I believe in the High Desert and hopefully this event will motivateour kids to stay in the area, to get educated, to start a career and topour themselves into our economy,” Armstrong told the Daily Press.

During the panel discussion, Exquadrum President Eric Schmidtadmitted that, “A four year university isn’t for everybody.” He alsoencouraged students to review educational and career options, andto “Turn something that you love into something that you do for aliving.”

Inside one exhibition building, a dozen students gathered around aGeneral Atomics simulator to try their hand at navigating a dronef ying thousands of feet overhead.

Inland Empire Job Center Admission Counselor Patricia Ledesma and Admissions/Career Services ManagerGreg Trammel had their hands full as they spoke with students about the tuition-free training.

“Job Corps is open to students age 16 through 24. We offer hands-on training in several industries such asmanufacturing, construction and technology,” said Trammel, as several of his instructors demonstrated someof the trades available. “Job Corps is a great place to start a career.”

At age 43, San Joaquin Valley College medical assistant student Christina Norris told the Daily Press “It’s nevertoo late to start your education.”

SJVC Learning Resource Coordinator Donia Taylor said the college’s nine-month medical program is ideal foranyone over 18 years of age.

“Instruction for the medical program includes classroomcoursework and an internship at a local medical facility,” Taylorsaid. “After graduation, we help with job placement.”

Taylor said SJVC admits about 80 students each year to its campuslocated in Hesperia.

SBC Fair Off ce Technician Melodee Fausch was at the eventpromoting the annual fair and fairgrounds, and directing jobseekers to the main off ce.

FAA working on new flight route away from Lake Arrowhead – San Bernardino Sun

Lake Arrowhead residents tormented by an increase in jet noise fornearly the past two years just got some good news.

The Federal Aviation Administration has started working on a new flightroute that would reduce commercial flights over the mountaincommunity, after numerous complaints and protest from residents, announced Supervisor Janice Rutherford’s office Thursday, Feb. 21.

“I’m very, very pleased that collectively our voice was heard,” said DavidCaine, a Lake Arrowhead resident who formed Quiet Skies LakeArrowhead. “We’ve got the promise of something good and we’re goingto look forward to see it happen.”

The new route could take a year or more to develop, but will fully replacethe current daytime route over the lake, which was implemented in April2017 as part of the FAA’s Southern California Metroplex project,

according to the news release.

Under Metroplex, pilots follow a more direct and programmed flight pathinto Ontario International Airport and other Southland airports. Theproject replaces dozens of conventional air routes with ones that arebased on cutting-edge satellite navigation.

The change, however, triggered protests from residents who argued thatthey could now hear engine noise from aircraft less than 3,000 feetabove their homes.

In April 2018, the FAA began rerouting nighttime flights about 2.1 mileseast of the current path to reduce direct overflight between 11 p.m. and 6a.m.

The nighttime path, known as the JCKIE route, is not available during theday because it conflicts with paths into John Wayne and Long Beachairports.

The proposed new route, which is currently undergoing safety andtechnical evaluations in simulators, would be used full time, Ian Gregor,FAA spokesman, said in an email Thursday, Feb. 21.

The FAA expects to share the final design within the next few months,Gregor said.

“This route would have significant operational benefits for the FAA aswell as address concerns from Lake Arrowhead residents regardingoverflights,” Gregor said.

Once the design is finalized, it will undergo environmental review. Duringthat process the FAA will decide the appropriate level of communityinvolvement, Gregor said.

While they expect the route would be highly used, Gregor said, therewould be times due to operational factors when they would have to directaircraft off of it due to air traffic volume, weather conditions and airportdemands.

Legislation that could stymie a controversial project to pump groundwaterfrom the Mojave Desert has been reintroduced in Sacramento.

State Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside and Assemblywoman LauraFriedman, D-Glendale last week introduced SB 307, which seeks toensure “that any future water transfers from groundwater basinsunderlying desert lands do not adversely affect the California desert’snatural or cultural resources,” according to a bill fact sheet.

“If we get this wrong we run the risk ofdestroying a precious national monument andfragile ecosystem,” Roth said in a newsrelease. “We must proceed with the utmostcaution.”

If passed, SB 307 could pose a major hurdleto the Cadiz Valley Water Conservation,Recovery and Storage Project, a proposal byLos Angeles-based Cadiz Inc. and Southern

California water agencies to pump 16 billion gallons of groundwater ayear from connected Mojave Desert aquifers to sell for municipal andagricultural use.

Cadiz says the project will save groundwater that would otherwise be lostto evaporation for use by 400,000 people annually. Opponents argue theproject would dry up water needed by desert plants and wildlife tosurvive.

Last year, a bill similar to SB 307 passed the Assembly, only to stall inthe Senate Appropriations Committee after intense lobbying by projectsupporters – business and labor groups among them – and opponents, including environmentalists.

Cadiz also opposes the current bill. But since the last bill’s defeat, “wehave engaged in a dialogue with Senator Roth to address his questions”about the project’s long-term sustainability, Cadiz said in a statementposted on the project website.

“We understand that Senator Roth intends to continue to engage with usand our opponents throughout the legislative session to ensure that theProject can be a part of the solution to California’s long-term waterchallenge, while also protecting state desert resources. We appreciatethe Senator’s willingness to engage with us and welcome a continueddialogue with the Legislature and the bill’s proponents.”

The project got a boost from President Donald Trump’s administration inApril 2017 with the removal of a finding that a pipeline to carry pumped-out water needed a right-of-way permit and environmental studies.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, a project opponent, issued astatement supporting SB 307.

“The Trump administration has rolled back key protections at the federallevel, so we need the state legislature to step up and pass this criticallyimportant legislation to stop projects like Cadiz,” she said.

The National Parks Conservation Association also praised the bill.

“Generations of people who live in the desert and love the desert havefought this harmful proposal, which endangers one of our country’s mostunique, precious and important places.”

As a candidate, Gov. Gavin Newsom, who took office in January, said heopposed the project.

The latest winter storm to hit Southern California has dropped snow ontolocal mountains, prompting some school districts to declare a snow day.

“Due to snow accumulations across Rim School District, but especially atour higher elevations, today, February 21, 2019, is a snow day,” says astatement on the Rim of the World Unified School District’s website.

All of the schools in the Bear Valley Unified School District in Big BearLake, and those in the Snowline Joint Unified School District in thePhelan and Wrightwood areas, will also be closed.

The weather system moved into the area Wednesday evening and wasexpected to bring snow and light rain to the Inland Empire throughThursday.

Southern California snowfall levels expected to drop, some highwaysremain closed

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service don’t expect thecurrent storm to bring as much rain as last week’s downpours, which ledto evacuation orders for local fire-burn scars including the Holy fire inLake Elsinore.

A female chihuahua was found dead in her kennel at the San BernardinoAnimal Shelter last week, but she didn’t freeze to death, police saidThursday, Feb. 21.

Addressing Facebook posts shared this week by animal advocates, police said Lacey, the black chihuahua, was found inside a section of herkennel that has heated floors and heaters overhead. While animals atthe shelter sleep without beds, there was a blanket with the dog whenshe was found on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, police said.

The dog’s exact age is uncertain.

“We are taking care of the animals at the shelter,” police spokeswomanSadie Albers said, “and they are provided adequate heating and givenblankets when temperatures get low, so we do take their comfort andhealth seriously.”

According to police, the stray chihuahua arrived at the shelter Feb. 9 andwas found to have no diseases. She was checked again for diseasesbefore being spayed Feb. 11, and returned another clean bill of health.

A rescue organization was scheduled to pick up the chihuahua following

On Feb. 14, the dog was found dead by kennel staff.

Police say she may have died due to complications from surgery.

In recent months, animal advocates, rescuers and volunteers havevoiced displeasure over operations at the San Bernardino AnimalShelter.

In November, protestors spoke out against interim shelter manager Lt.Frank Macomber and reports he had euthanized healthy animals andanimals that rescuers had arranged to pick up. Protesters also said thelieutenant had turned away volunteers, animal groomers and rescuers.

For the last several years, the San Bernardino Police Department hasmanaged animal services, the shelter included, though that may changesoon.

Earlier this month, city leadersinitiated the process ofrelieving the department ofdaily operations there.

A statue of John Wayne stands at the baggage level of the airport bearing his name. Is it time to put him out to pasture? (Mark Boster / Los Angeles Times)

Most people familiar with the life story of John Wayne are aware that the late movie star was a dyed-in-the-wool right-winger — after all, he was still making a movie glorifying America’s conduct of the VietnamWar (“The Green Berets,” 1968) well after the country had begun to get sick of the conflict.

But the resurrection of a 1971 interview Wayne gave to Playboy magazine has underscored the sheercrudeness of the actor’s feelings about gay people, black people, Native Americans, young people andliberals.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s impossible or immoral to enjoy Westerns and war movies starringJohn Wayne; that’s a personal choice. But it certainly undermines any justification for his name and imageto adorn a civic facility.

I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to apoint of responsibility.

We’re talking about Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. It’s long past the time that Wayne’s nameshould come down.

This wouldn’t be the first time that the airport’s name has been the subject of debate. Orange CountySupervisors pondered the issue in 2008, when local tourism officials expressed concern that the namefailed to convey exactly where the airport is located. There may have been other occasions since 1979,when the supervisors christened the airport at the urging of Supervisor Thomas F. Riley.

Riley was an ex-Marine, but his rationale is lost in the mists of time. It may have had something to do withWayne’s status as a rock-ribbed Republican conservative, which was Orange County’s self-image in thatperiod.

It’s time to take John Wayne’s name off the Orange County airport - Los Angeles Times

To fight the housing shortage, California is right to come down hard on Huntington Beach

FEB 01, 2019 | 6:00 AM

But that Orange County no longer exists. That should be evident from the results of November’s election,in which voters turfed out the county’s last remaining GOP members of Congress — some of whom hadembraced Donald Trump in a fruitless effort to save their careers--and elected an all-Democraticcongressional delegation. Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse communitythat it’s hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after anoutspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of theconcourse.

Wayne’s May 1971 Playboy interview has been unearthed before, notably in 2016 when his daughter Aissaendorsed Donald Trump for president. But it may well resonate more today, when iconic representationstied to racism, such as statues of Confederate war heroes, are being evicted from public spaces.

So let’s take a gander at some of John Wayne’s opinions, circa 1971. A typescript of the Playboy interview, which I link to here, has been circulating widely and is the source of the quotes, but I validated it againstfacsimile pages from the original Playboy edition. Magazine writer Richard Warren Lewis conducted theinterview at Wayne’s home in Newport Beach.

In a racist tweet, Trump treats the genocidal Trail of Tears as a laughing matter

FEB 11, 2019 | 6:00 AM

Gay people:

Wayne: Movies were once made for the whole family. Now, with the kind of junk the studios arecranking out. … I'm quite sure that within two or three years, Americans will be completely fed up withthese perverted films.

PLAYBOY: What kind of films do you consider perverted?

WAYNE: Oh, Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy — that kind of thing. Wouldn't you say that the wonderfullove of those two men in Midnight Cowboy, a story about two fags, qualifies?

Black people:

WAYNE: With a lot of blacks, there's quite a bit of resentment along with their dissent, and possiblyrightfully so. But we can't all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to theleadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point ofresponsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment toirresponsible people.

PLAYBOY: Are you equipped to judge which blacks are irresponsible and which of their leadersinexperienced?

WAYNE: It's not my judgment. The academic community has developed certain tests that determinewhether the blacks are sufficiently equipped scholastically. But some blacks have tried to force the issueand enter college when they haven't passed the tests and don't have the requisite background. … But ifthey aren't academically ready for that step, I don't think they should be allowed in. Otherwise, theacademic society is brought down to the lowest common denominator. … What good would it do toregister anybody in a class of higher algebra or calculus if they haven't learned to count? There has to bea standard. …

I think the Hollywood studios are carrying their tokenism a little too far. There's no doubt that 10percent of the population is black, or colored, or whatever they want to call themselves; they certainlyaren't Caucasian. Anyway, I suppose there should be the same percentage of the colored race in films asin society. But it can't always be that way. There isn't necessarily going to be 10 percent of the grips orsound men who are black, because more than likely, 10 percent haven't trained themselves for that typeof work.

Native Americans:

PLAYBOY: For years American Indians have played an important — if subordinate — role in yourWesterns. Do you feel any empathy with them?

WAYNE: I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that's what you'reasking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were greatnumbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.…

Martin Luther King Jr. had a few words to say about calls for 'civility'

JUN 26, 2018 | 10:40 AM

PLAYBOY: How do you feel about the government grant for a university and cultural center that theseIndians [then encamped on Alcatraz Island] have demanded as "reparations"?

WAYNE: What happened between their forefathers and our forefathers is so far back — right, wrong orindifferent — that I don't see why we owe them anything. I don't know why the government should givethem something that it wouldn't give me.

PLAYBOY: Do you think they've had the same advantages and opportunities that you've had?

WAYNE: I'm not gonna give you one of those I-was-a-poor-boy-and-I-pulled-myself-upby-my-bootstraps stories, but I've gone without a meal or two in my life, and I still don't expect the governmentto turn over any of its territory to me. Hard times aren't something I can blame my fellow citizens for.Years ago, I didn't have all the opportunities, either. But you can't whine and bellyache 'cause somebodyelse got a good break and you didn't, like these Indians are. We'll all be on a reservation soon if thesocialists keep subsidizing groups like them with our tax money.

Wayne made these comments against a backdrop of generalized contempt for those he labeled leftists, socialists, and communists, without making much distinction among them.

Some of Wayne’s defenders have stepped forward to say it’s unfair to condemn an elderly man’s memoryfor a 48-year-old interview conducted during a very different era. In a statement issued Wednesday to FoxNews, Wayne’s family says, “It’s unfair to judge someone on something that was written that he saidnearly 50 years ago when the person is no longer here to respond.”

But that won’t wash. Wayne was a few weeks shy of his 64th birthday when the interview appeared inprint. It was 1971, so the civil rights revolution had been going on for years; Martin Luther King Jr. hadbeen assassinated three years before.

Wayne wasn’t expressing the tenor of the times — he was reacting to the advances being won by AfricanAmericans through demonstrations and legislation. His words already were retrograde when they wereuttered. Wayne wasn’t an old conservative who hadn’t yet been “woke”; he had seen the future, and it puthim into a racist rage.

The family’s statement also refers to Wayne’s “continuing work to find a cure for cancer through the JohnWayne Cancer Foundation and the John Wayne Cancer Institute.” It’s unclear what they mean. Bothcharities were founded after Wayne’s 1979 death when his family allowed his name to be used, apparentlyfor fundraising; the institute is located at St. John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica. They may do goodwork, but it doesn’t appear that Wayne himself participated during his life.

Nor did he serve in wartime, despite his later flag-waving and Vietnam War-mongering. Wayne was 34when the Pearl Harbor attack brought the U.S. into World War II, and reportedly dodged enlistment evenin the documentary film unit headed by his mentor, director John Ford, which apparently irked Ford noend.

The great irony of the airport’s moniker is that John Wayne’s old home of Newport Beach hates JohnWayne Airport. The first line of the Newport Beach municipal website devoted to the history of the airportstates, “Each decade that the airport has been in existence has brought with it changes that have adverselyimpacted Newport Beach neighborhoods.”

The city sued Orange County in the 1980s to block the airport’s expansion, eventually settling on noiseabatement rules that remain in effect, more or less. These account for the bizarre take-off patternexperienced by departing passengers, which involves a sharp climb followed by a sudden cutback in enginepower as the aircraft crosses over residential neighborhoods.

That leaves us with the question of why John Wayne’s name should be associated with any civic institutionin Orange County, its airport or otherwise. He doesn’t appear to have been a major contributor to civic lifein his home town or county; in 2016, when a GOP state assemblyman from Orange County tried to get thestate to declare a “John Wayne Day,” he was rebuffed when legislators mentioned Wayne’s support for theHouse Un-American Activities Committee and the John Birch Society.

There surely are residents or natives of Orange County more deserving of having their name on theairport. (My vote would go to electric guitar pioneer Leo Fender, a native of Fullerton.) But the mostappropriate choice might be the one proposed by those tourism officials in 2008. Just call it OrangeCounty Airport.
