Use our throughout

The 300 experts at LASCO have one common goal: the building of machines tailored to the needs and success of the user.

LASCO screw presses with frequency converter drive are in use worldwide. In the illustration, racks for automotive steering racks are being producedon an automated SPR 1000.

Lasco in its role as machine tool manu -facturer, has concentrated its efforts, sinceformation, on the supply of machines andsystems providing solutions for metal workingtasks to users in industry and related trades. The experience of over 140 years of manufacture has provided us with the capability to offer production engineering thatis tailored to the rough working conditionsencountered in the metal working industry.Today, we have over 1000 customers in allareas of industry in over 53 countries throughout the world.

In the electrically driven screw presses fromLASCO, the sum total of the most progressivecomponents available at the time of manufacture combine in the drive, pressframe and control system to form a functionalunit that lasts for decades, providing solutions for a diverse range of applications.

The needs of our customers are the yardstickfor the action we take, which is why everymachine is individually optimized. The basicfeatures and concepts of our directly drivenscrew presses are explained in this brochure. We would be delighted to personally discusswhich features “your” screw press shouldhave.

Capabilities

Screw presses are a classic amongthe machines built for metal for-ming. Leonardo da Vinci is suppo-sed to have built the first one, andGutenberg operated screw pressesfor his printed products. Moreover, several designs originating fromthe beginnings of industrial revolu-tion are known, some ergonomical-ly very dubious. Nowadays, modern, energy-saving precisionscrew presses are associated withLASCO worldwide.

As with hydraulically poweredpresses and drop forging hammers, electrically driven screw pressesalso belong to the family of non-lift metal forming machines.

Screw presses supply a highamount of force and energy at rea-sonable cost. They have no design-related kinetically fixed lower cen-tre point and do not block underload.

As power driven machines, screwpresses will always be used wherethe forming of blanks with a com-paratively short stroke is possible

and/or with a stable energy supply, high repetitive accuracy of the for-ming process is desired.

Screw presses are used for refor-ming, straightening, hot and coldcalibrating and coining steel, alu-minium and other special alloys.

During powder metal forging, sin-tered blanks are re-compacted and, because of their characteristics, are perfectly suited to precisionforging, in both open and closeddie.

LASCO offers exclusively directlydriven screw presses, which useelectric energy to accelerate theflywheel, which is connected tothe screw. Their high efficiencyresults from regenerative brakingcombined with economical powerconsumption and short stroketimes. This drive concept opens upthe possibility of precise, compu-ter-controlled energy regulation. The frequency converter drivemakes possible the use of low-lossdrive motors because the lowpower supply loading is caused by

the frequency converter itself andnot by electrically “soft” and the-refore high-loss drives. Therefore, the forming process is far easiercontrollable. Even several blows ofdiffering energy in the same dieare possible under program con-trol.

LASCO offers an optimal pressconcept for every application withthe basic SPR series (slippingclutch for overload protection) andSPP (can absorb die-to-die blows, therefore no slipping clutch) andnumerous options. Comprehensiveaccessories and the possibility ofautomation are available.

LASCO’s services are not limited toconstruction, production andinstallation of standardized compo-nents, but cover the job of satisfy-ing the customer as a whole. Ourin-house depth of production hasnot only resulted in certified quali-ty but also in flexibility allowing afast, uncomplicated response tothe customer’s needs and require-ments.

LASCO concepts...

LASCO has continually increasedthe efficiency of its screw presseswith a number of constructiveimprovements. The development ofa frequency converter drive for thistype of machine in the 1980s wasregarded as a pioneering achieve-ment in the history of metal for-ming machines and has securedLASCO’s competitive lead in theinternational market. This leadingposition is based on a whole seriesof typical constructive features, such as:

Screw geometryA unique feature of LASCO screwpresses is the screw geometry ofthe forged special alloy CrNiMosteel screw, a joint developmentbetween the Technical UniversityMunich and LASCO. It ensureslong lifetime and eliminates anyself-locking tendency. The fixedbearing arrangement and shortscrew length significantly increasethe rigidity of the machine.

Screw nutThe screw nut built into the pressram is made of high-grade bronzeand has extremely good glidingand emergency running properties.

The screw’s thrust bearing is alsomade of wear-resistant bronze. Itprevents the screw bending bysymmetrically absorbing the pres-sing forces.

Telescopic guard Premature wear of the screw andscrew nut is prevented by a teles-copic guard. It reliably protects thescrew from scale and dirt.

Press ramThe ram is made of high-gradecast steel, fully stress relieved.

Guiding systemThe guiding system is set at anangle of 45 degrees so that it isable to maintain constant clear -

ance in spite of heat expansion.Bronze and steel are used as guidepairs. The slide rails are nitrated.Adjustable guide rails ensure mini-mum clearance between the guides. In conjunction with longpress ram guides and high ramrigidity, high product quality andexcellent die life are ensured.

FlywheelThe cast-steel flywheel functionsas an energy store. On SPR seriesscrew presses, it is fitted withautomatic overload protection(slipping clutch).

BrakeThe integrated brake providesmaximum possible safety. It actsdirectly on the flywheel and canstop the press ram and hold it inany position. It is closed by springforce and opened pneumatically orhydraulically. On larger presses, multiple disc brakes are used onthe motors.

DriveLASCO’s precision screw pressesare driven by reversing three-phaseasynchronous squirrel cage motors. In the forging industry such drivesare regarded as being exceptionallyreliable with low maintenancerequirements, and therefore highlyefficient. The motors are connec-ted directly to the flywheel andcooled by a temperature-controlledfan.

Thus, LASCO’s frequency converterdrive provides the user with thefollowing advantages:

Lower loading of the power sup-ply by current peaks

Smaller core cross-sections

Energy recovery from regenera -tive braking

Short cycle times, even at lowforming energies

Almost no reactive current

Efficiency improvement by anapproximate factor of three

Negligible motor slip

Lower power costs

Reduction of wear and mainten-ance on the mechanical brake

Exact energy control from 1% -100% ensuring high processreliability and repeatability

...in detail

Equipping a screw press with fre-quency converter drive makes pos-sible regenerative drive operationand increases the electrical effi-ciency of the machine considera-bly. The parameters for the wor-king phase of a frequency conver-ter drive screw press (see diagram)are stored in the control. The ope-rator only has to enter the requiredpower and the stroke for the pro-cess. The control then computesall the relevant data for the fre-quency converter such that theimportant quality criteria listedbelow are reliably fulfilled:

Exact repetitive accuracy of thepower available

Exact approach to the upperdead center

Time optimized motion, evenwith small power requirements

The three velocity-time-diagrams aboveshow the course of the ram at 100, 50 and10% energy set. The ram is accelerated atmaximum possible speed and generativelydecelerated at a velocity equivalent to thepreset energy. After the forming processand the backlash, the ram is electronicallyintercepted, accelerated and again generati-vely decelerated, so that the ram exactlypositions in the upper dead center. So every working stroke may be effected inthe shortest possible time.

LASCO’s concepts...

Bolster plate on the tableLASCO presses are equipped with aprotective bolster plate on the presstable to minimize wear. They aresupplied as standard with T-slots forholding the tools, with option ofcustom designed hydraulic clam-ping systems.

Multiple cavity diesOptionally, LASCO’s screw pressesare fitted with multiple cavity dies.Depending on the complexity ofthe forming process, these diescan be used with a movable slideon the press ram or a turntable for

the lower die. Above all, thismakes sense when material pro-perties and the geometry of theblank to be processed requireseveral forming stages.

Measurement of press forceThe press force exerted in the for-ming process is measured andrecorded by strain gauges. Whenthe maximum permissible force isexceeded, the system displays awarning message and shuts downthe machine at repeated overloadto prevent possible damage to thepress.

Multi-piece press frameThe design of the multi-pieceframe offers certain advantages.Potential notch stress concentrati-ons at the connection between thetable and the uprights and bet-ween the cross-head and theuprights are eliminated. Transportand erection of larger presses maybe easier.

Above all, the press frame consi-sting of several parts is considera-bly more rigid as a result of thepre-stressing. For the same tensilestress, the elongation is only 20%of the value induced in a single-piece frame. As well as ensuringlongevity of the frame, and formingof more accurate parts, overall sizeand weight of the press may bereduced.

Laying the foundationsOptional spring damping elementsunder the bedplate ensure lowvibration press operation. Thetransfer of vibration into the sur-roundings is thus reduced to aminimum.

Process controls

Decentralised process controlThe “brain” of every modernmachine tool is its decentralisedprocess control. As LASCO is total-ly customer focused, all configura-tion and programming is perfor-med in-house.

LASCO’s core competence in soft-ware programming and in thedesign and installation of electro-nic and electric components allowsthe consideration of all customerrequests that are technically fea -sible, including the provision ofinterfaces for integration of existing processes and interlinkedoperations.

LASCO process and machine con-trols offer all the performance cha-racteristics of a modern productionorganization, such as:

centralized, product-related set-ting and evaluation of all machi-ne parameters

product data administration, optionally with data base link

operating data registration

product follow-up

integration in MRP

integrated maintenance programme

integrated data logger

The requests of the customer arealso considered, when designingman-to-machine interfaces, as wellas specific screen menus andcharts (available in several langua-ges).

The operator is guided by a gra-phic colour display, which is in thesame language as the messagesdisplayed at the terminal. The regi-stration, evaluation and listing ofdata can be input simultaneouslyduring operation and the data canbe transferred to the network viainterfaces.

Software modules specific to thecustomer can be linked. Options ofintegrated phone- or internet-aidedonline maintenance systems areoffered.

The design, programming and installation of electronic and electric components are just afew of LASCO’s core competencies.

Operator guidance on customer’s demand

Individually programmed

LASCO designs operator menus and screen forms individually according to the customer’sdemand, in this case located in China.

Efficient interfaces ensure real-time communication with automa-tion systems, including industrialrobots. A data logger is alwaysintegrated and offers the possibili-ty of archiving internal and exter-nal analogous and binary signals.

LASCO control concepts aredecentralised systems on the basisof bus systems. Only hardware ofinternational industrial standardsis selected. This permits custo-

mers not only the possibility ofmaking adjustments and perfor-ming maintenance on their own,but also reprogramming andenhancing at a reasonable price. Not least this means a high security of investment.

SPR Series

LASCO’s SPR and SPP series ofscrew presses are supplied withfrequency converter drive and designed for typical metal formingtasks.

With their large working capacity, the SPR series can be used univer-sally and is particularly suited to awide range of forging work, inclu-ding long forming strokes. Theblow energy can be adjusted from1 to 100 percent. The SPR seriesis fitted with overload protection inthe form of a slipping clutch bet-ween the screw and the flywheel. The slipping clutch activates if anunintended die-to-die blow is trig-gered, preventing damage to themachine.

SPP series

The SPP is designed for formingtasks requiring short forming strokes. The maximum energy stored in the flywheel is less thanfor an SPR. So the machine is pro-tected against a die-to-die bloweven without a slipping clutch.

SPP screw presses are particularlysuited to tasks such as accuratecalibrating, coining and the for-ming of flat metal parts. They areused, for example, in the manufac-ture of medical instruments orhigh quality cutlery.

ce, a limitation to a maximum 0.5m/s has proved to be acceptable. The nominal energy is retained inthese variants by making corre-sponding corrections to the designof the flywheel.

This allows an optimal materialflow in the die, even with complexgeometries (for example, thin finsor braces). Fast stroke cycles areguaranteed because of the genera-tive drive operation, independentof the soft materials.
