When I discovered I was HIV positive roughly 30 years ago, my work as a photographer is what kept me going. It is a privilege to be able to witness and photograph beauty around the world.

This book is a testament to the beauty of life.

Jaren geleden verliet Helena van Engelen haar comfortabele en veilige bestaan in Amsterdam om in Peru hulp te brengen aan straatkinderen. Ondanks forse tegenwerking, fysiek geweld en zware ontberingen, volhardde Helena in haar roeping. Inmiddels heeft zij in de Heilige Vallei van de Inca’s een oase van schoonheid gebouwd: het project Niños del Arco Iris – de kinderen van de regenboog.

Dankzij Helena en haar team ontvangen talloze kinderen hier dagelijks onder-wijs, medische zorg en maaltijden, en daarmee een perspectief op de toe-komst, een grotere eigenwaarde en een flinke portie levenslust. Met de komst van Helena is het leven méér geworden dan overleven. Een paradijsje voor kinderen die vaak in de steek zijn gelaten, zijn verwaarloosd of mis-bruikt. Helena leert haar ‘niños’ dat ze de moeite waard zijn. Haar grootste gift is de kinderen te leren weer van zichzelf te houden, en van het leven. Leren om liefde te ontvangen, maar ook terug te geven. Een lach, een bloem, een tekening, een ui of een ei. Zij leert haar kinderen dat je niet alleen je hand hoeft op te houden, maar ook iets kan terugdoen.

‘Schoonheid behoort voor mij tot de essentie van het leven. Ik heb een passie voor schoonheid. Niet voor klatergoud, maar schoonheid in de ware zin des woords. Innerlijke en uiterlijke schoonheid symboliseert kracht. Ik geloof dat, hoe arm je ook bent, je je eigenwaarde kunt behouden door goed voor jezelf te zorgen. Ik geloof dat schoonheid schoonheid opwekt.’

Years ago, Helena left the comfort and security of her Amsterdam life to help street children in Peru. Despite strong opposition, physical violence and serious setbacks, Helena succeeded in creating an oasis of beauty in the Sacred Valley of the Incas: Project Niños del Arco Iris, the children of the rainbow, was born.

Thanks to Helena and her team, countless children receive education, medical care and meals on a daily basis. Along with it, they are also given new hope for the future, a greater sense of self-worth and a renewed lust for life. With Helena’s arrival, life has become more than just survival. Offering a paradise for abandoned, neglected and abused children, Helena instils in her niños a sense of self-worth. Her greatest gift is teaching the children to love themselves and life and to give and receive love. A smile, a flower, drawing an onion or an egg: she teaches the children that making a stand is not enough, you have to take action and give back.

‘To me, beauty is the essence of life. I have a passion for beauty; not for glitz and glamour, but for beauty in the truest sense of the word. Inter-nal and external beauty symbolise strength. I believe that, as poor as you may be, you can keep your dignity by taking care of yourself. I believe that beauty begets beauty.’

Orange Babies

Speerpunt van Orange Babies is het tegengaan van de overdracht van hiv van moeder op kind. Dit staat niet los van alle andere problemen, zoals onwetendheid, ondervoeding, analfa-betisme, armoede en huiselijk geweld. Op al deze terreinen is Orange Babies betrokken.

Aan kinderen wordt het vertrouwen gegeven dat je met hiv gewoon kunt leven, gezond kunt zijn en een baan kunt hebben. Dat je later zelf een gezin kunt stichten en kinderen zonder hiv ter wereld kunt brengen.Maar ook leren zij zelf verantwoorde-lijkheid te nemen voor het - op het juiste moment - innemen van hun medicijnen, voor hun studie en respect te hebben voor hun medemens. Het is geweldig om kinderen te zien en te spreken die weten dat ze weliswaar hiv-positief zijn, maar vertrouwen hebben in het leven en het besef hebben dat ze niets minder zijn dan andere kinderen en alle kansen aangrijpen op een goede toekomst.

Bijna alle kinderen op de foto’s zijn hiv-positief en/of wees. Binnen de projecten van Orange Babies groeien ze gezond op, ze genieten onderwijs en ze leven in een veilige omgeving waar ze over hun angsten kunnen praten. Waar ze dus gewoon kind kunnen zijn, ‘toevallig met hiv’. Voor mij is het pure schoonheid om het plezier van de kinderen te zien in hun dans, muziek en creativiteit. Hier word ik gelukkig van!

Orange Babies aims to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. This is firmly linked to other problems as well, such as ignorance, malnutrition, illiteracy, poverty and domestic violence, which Orange Babies also seeks to actively combat.

Children are being taught that they can live healthy lives and find work despite being HIV-positive. They can even start families and have healthy, HIV-negative children of their own. They are also being taught the impor-tance of taking their medication on time, taking responsibility for their education and respecting those around them. It is wonderful to see and talk to children who, despite their HIV status, love life, know they are no different than other children and seize every opportunity to ensure a bright future for themselves.

Nearly all of the children in the photographs are HIV-positive and/or orphans. The projects developed by Orange Babies gives them a healthy childhood, a good education and a safe place to discuss their fears. Here they can be children; children who happen to be HIV-positive. Watching them dance, make music and be creative is beauty in the purest sense. It makes me genuinely happy!

ORANGE BABIES Amsterdam

The Orange Babies foundation was established to help pregnant women with HIV and their babies in Africa.

Orange Babies supports children infected with or directly affected by the HIV virus. It does so by offering information and medical care and by building orphanages, maternity clinics and shelters for these women and their children.
