Every summer resi-dents of Mogappair as in other parts of
Chennai are forced to de-pend on tanker water sup-ply or buy water paying as much as Rs 5 per pot of drinking water. Over the years the groundwater table has significantly de-clined in the neighbour-hood due to rapid urban-isation.
Residents of indepen-dent houses who have tried to sink bore wells have found to their dismay that sometimes water is not available even at a depth of 250 feet. This is a far cry from the scene in the nine-ties when water would be available in wells in Mogappair at a depth of just 15 to 30 feet.
It is in this backdrop that Rain Water Harvesting could come in handy to
Open Rain Water Harvesting in Mogappairreplenish the groundwater table to an extent. And the Corporation of Chennai has taken the lead to pro-vide open rain water har-vesting structures in parts of Mogappair.
The civic agency is set-ting up rain water harvest-ing systems in open places on locations such as Pan-neer Nagar, Vellalar Street
and EB Road in Mogap-pair West and East.
Corporation officials say they are in the process of identifying more such areas where there is no storm water drain and also the major water stagnation points in the locality. Those points would be converted into water har-vesting points. “We dig a
huge pit and fill them with small stones and use well rings to cover the pit. Fi-nally we cover them with a slap stomper, which will
help collect rain water,” says GK Babu, Assistant Engineer, Chennai Corpo-ration.

“Its effects will be felt over a period of time. It will definitely make the ground water more replenished. We are in the process of identifying more points to provide rain water harvesting. Presently, even if we get heavy downpour the
concrete flooring is not allowing the rain water to go to the earth and that results in flooding. Several harvesting points like these will improve the condition of the ground water” he added.
Raghu Ram, who stays in the DABC apart-ment on EB Road, says, “It is a good thing that the government has taken initiative to prevent our ground water from getting depleted com-pletely. It should be done in all the houses like how it was enforced in 2001. These days no one bothers to provide facilities for that.”
Block building contest

ing an Inter School Block Building competition for school students on Oct 22 at the school campus at TS Krishna Nagar. This compe-tition aims to enhance cre-ativity and cognitive skills of children.The competition is

While residents of Mogappair are happy that work is apace to lay storm water drains in
many parts of the locality, the digging of roads for the project has led to two-way traffic on one side of a stretch of the Church Road for over a week now. It has also cut off access to two streets towards the end of Church Road (ahead of Gan-gai Amman Nagar Main Road) for nearly 10 days.
The storm water drain work that be-gan on the Spartan School Road end more than three months ago has now reached the left side of the Church Road. For a stretch of around 100 metres to-wards the end, the road digging work has forced motorists to use the other side of the road for onward and inward traffic. “It slows up traffic during peak hours delaying our journey to office. There is no sign board at the entrance of the Church Road from Mogappair East Bus
Depot to warn motorists that as they move on they will hit this stretch where cars and lorries have to negotiate with oncoming traffic,” says Vikas Agarwal, who drives his car to office.
Surabhi, who stays in VGN apartment on Church Road, says, “For quite some days now the road is seeing traffic snarls on this particular stretch where they have dug up the road. We are forced to take this
road to head towards the Gangai Amaran Nagar Main Road,” she said. The Church road ends at Gangai Amaran Nagar Main Road. From there taking a right will lead to Nolambur and left will lead to Golden George Nagar and the Maduravoyal New Bridge, which leads to the Maduravoyal-Poonamalle High Road.
She said, “At least a few metres ahead, a sign board has to be kept to inform the drivers to take alternative route to reach the destination. Now all the vehicles are taking the one side of the road causing more congestion.”
Since one of the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board units is on the same road, the tanker lorries keep coming out from the building and also use the same stretch causing traffic snarls, says Hari Krishnan, a resident of Nolambur. “A few buses are plying on this route. Traf-fic regulation is very poor. It may take months to complete the storm water drain work until then will the chaos to contin-ue?” asks Hari.

The Park Road in Anna Nagar West-ern Extension off
Thirumangalam-Ambattur Estate Road appears to have turned into a favourite street for abandoning cars. It is surprising to note that on the left hand side of the road (from the Padikuppan Road Junction) as many as eight cars and a lorry have been abandoned. And no one has raised an eyebrow yet about it.
A few metres after you enter the Park Road at least six Tata Indica cars, a Ford and a Maruti 800 are found parked on the side of the road seemingly left unat-tended and uncared for many months. The same is the fate with a lorry. Most of these vehicles have a yellow number plate indi-
cating that they were used as cab service or tourist hire vehicles. The Ford though has a white board number plate, perhaps abandoned by its private owner.
“These vehicles have been here for a few months now. You can easily make that out from the fact that mounds of earth have start-ed to cover a part of the tyres. Also they have a coating of dust cake and dry leaves are strewn on them,” said a mechanic shop attendant nearby.
“It surprises us that someone can simply park a car here and not care to take it away for months. Who would be so rich? Ultimately, these vehicles would only end up in a scrap shop and miscreants would also slowly make away with parts such as

Navrathiri celebrations at Citilights The Citilights Meadows ladies Association organized the Navarathiri celebrations in a
grand manner. The women and kids turned out in traditional costumes and enlightened the evening. Nine kids were

S Rly introduces special trains
Southern Railway has announced two special trains. The first will be between Chennai and Trichy and another between Chennai and Tirunelveli from Oct 29-31.
Get colour voter ID from e-Seva centres
The public can now avail the services offered by as many as 302 e-Seva centres in the Chennai region to get their colour Electors Voter Identity Cards (EPIC) by paying Rs. 25. The public can apply for colour EPICs at the e-Seva centres located in the Secretariat, all Taluk offices, Greater Chennai Corporation head office and its zonal offices.
Special SETC services from three terminals
In connection with the Deep-avali festival, long distance buses of the various State Transport Corpora-tions would be operated from three bus terminals on a temporary basis from October 26 to 28. The three bus terminals from where SETC buses will originate are Anna Nagar (West), Tambaram Sanatorium (MEPZ) and Poonamallee.
The Metropolitan Transport Cor-poration (MTC) will also operate 200 special services during the three days to the three bus terminals.
Special buses to Anna Nagar (West) bus terminus would be oper-ated from Avadi, Red Hills and Tambaram. For reaching the Tam-baram Sanatorium (MEPZ), special buses from Broadway, Thiruvanmi-yur, Adyar B.S., Siruseri IT Park, Kovalam, Chengalpattu, Vadane-mili and Thiruporur would be plied.

The Corporation of Chennai has barred visitors to the famed Anna Nagar Tower Park from walking in with digital cameras and ‘stand’ cameras. Activities such as group dance and playing musical instru-ments inside the park have also been banned.
The Corporation has put up caution boards at two places inside the park (near both entrances)
warning that violators would be handed over to the police.
Asked about the reason for laying such restrictions on visitors, a park worker said, “Of late we have come across instances of groups of people entering the park and performing dances distracting others. There have even been cases of ‘flash mobs’ springing into action. Walkers and those who wish to spend quiet evenings have com-
plained that this affects the serenity of the atmo-sphere.”
Besides, groups of youngsters have on a few occasions entered the park with heavy band music instruments and started playing them. “Their per-formances have been pretty loud leading to noise pol-lution. This is a park and not a public auditorium,” said Kamaleshan, a regular walker from the Anna Nagar neighbourhood.
Questioned about the ban on using digital cam-eras and ‘stand’ cameras, the park worker said, “We have had instances of youngsters, especially lov-ers, chasing each other taking photographs in dif-ferent poses using profes-sional cameras. Also, some of them hire professional photographers to do a pro-file shoot and they come inside with tripods. Other park users have com-plained that such photog-raphy inside the lawns where they sit with chil-dren is not conducive for them.”
Therefore, the Corpora-tion decided to put an end to it by introducing a ban

on using professional cam-eras. “This is rather strange. These days everyone has a smart phone with good camera lenses, which does a better job than a stand-alone digital camera. So anyone could come to the park and still take photo-graphs of his/her girlfriend or boyfriend. How do they plan to prevent that,” asked Samuel Nathan, a regular visitor to the park. “But the ban on group dance and musical instruments is wel-come,” he added.
