General Instructions:

i. Completed application forms should reach the MSE-PP Office by 31st May, 2018.

ii. All necessary documents including Caste Certificate wherever applicable should be submitted

along with the application form.

iii. All forms must be submitted with the requisite application fee (Crossed Demand Draft on a

scheduled bank drawn in favour of ‘Finance & Accounts Officer, University of Mumbai’,

payable at Mumbai) along with one self – addressed stamped envelope. Hall tickets will

send in that envelopes only write your name & address behind the Demand Draft.

iv. Candidates will appear for the Entrance Examination at their own cost.

v. There will be no supplementary Entrance Test.

Entrance Test for Admission to M.A. (Credit-based) in Economics

1. Students will be admitted to the M.A. (Credit-based) course through an entrance examination only.

2. The Entrance Test will also serve as change-of-faculty/change of subject test provided the minimum requirements are fulfilled.

3. Backward class candidates should be domicile of Maharashtra State and should belong to the categories notified by the Maharashtra State viz (a) Scheduled castes (including SC category persons who have adopted Baudha Religion) (b) Scheduled Tribes (c) VJ/NT, Special Backward Class and (e) Other Backward Class.

4. There will be an examination fee (non-refundable) of Rs. 150/- (for students belonging to reserved categories examination fee of Rs.50/-), in the form of a Demand Draft payable to the ‘Finance & Accounts Officer, University of Mumbai’, payable at Mumbai to be posted to ‘The Director, Mumbai School of Economics & Public Policy (Autonomous), University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Mumbai 400098, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Hall tickets will be send in the same envelopes only. Write your name and address behind the Demand Draft.

5. The dates for holding the Entrance Test and the broad scope of the examination are available on the University of Mumbai website.

6. Seats will be reserved as per Government and University rules, which may be amended from time to time. A copy of the relevant certificates must accompany applications of all categories of students belonging to reserved categories.

7. Students from outside the University of Mumbai will be admitted subject to their obtaining a provisional eligibility certificate from the Eligibility Section of the University of Mumbai for the M.A. [Economics] course. For purpose of obtaining eligibility, candidates have to submit all the documents required by the eligibility section in stipulated time else their names may not be considered for admission.

8. Students obtaining at least 45% marks in Third/Final year (or equivalent) of University of Mumbai in the graduate examination and 50% marks in Third/Final year of other Universities (any recognised Indian or foreign University) will be eligible to apply for the Entrance Test. Students in the last year of their graduation can also do so; however, their final admission to the course would depend on their having obtained the required marks at the graduation examination.

9. The requirement for minimum marks will be relaxed for students belonging to the SC/ST and other reserved categories only from the state of Maharashtra as per government/university rules. (40% marks in Third/Final year for students belonging to all reserved categories of the University of Mumbai and 45% for other than University of Mumbai).

10. Separate merit lists will be prepared for general and reserved category students as per relevant government rules. Though a category-wise merit list of all examinees will be computed, successive lists will be put up to fill in remaining vacancies.

11. For the purpose of preparing the merit lists, the performance of the University of Mumbai Economics students (with at least four papers in Economics of 100 marks at graduation /Third/Final year) will be computed by giving 50% weightage to their graduation (Third/Final

year) marks (overall aggregate marks in Economics of the final year exams) and 50% weightage to the marks obtained at the Entrance Test. The performance of all other students will be computed on the basis of 100% weightage to the Entrance Test marks. 12. A maximum of 150 students will be admitted on the basis of the merit lists so prepared.

13. Details of the Entrance Test are available on the website of the MSE-PP/University. Recommended books are also be specified there.

14. There will be 2 papers of 50 marks each. Paper-I: Analytical & Reasoning Ability at the level of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (50 marks) Paper-II: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics (40 marks) & Indian Economy (10 marks) The following is an indicative list of texts for Paper-II

Microeconomics: Demand Theory, Theory of Firm, Market Structures, and Theory of Distribution (Schaum Series: Theory & Problems of Microeconomics: Lipschutz).

Macroeconomics: National Income Accounting, Money & Banking including Inflation, Keynesian Models of National Income Determination (David Begg, Stanley Fischer and Rudiger Dornbusch. Second Edition: Part 4: On Macroeconomics, McGraw-Hill, 1987).

Indian Economy: B.A. level (Indian Economy: Its Development Experience, S.K. Misra and V.K. Puri; Indian Economy, Dutt and K. Sundaram).

15. How to Apply: Application forms and prospectus may be purchased from the MSE-PP on all Working days (2nd & 4th Saturday are holidays). The duly filled forms with all necessary documents can be sent along with a Demand Draft of Rs. 150/- (Rs. 50/- for students belonging to reserved categories), payable to the ‘Finance & Accounts Officer, University of Mumbai’, by post to The Director, Mumbai School of Economics & Public Policy (Autonomous), University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Santacruz (E), Mumbai 400098, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. The candidate’s name and address should be mentioned in capital letters behind the demand draft. Payment in any other form will not be accepted. No cheques will be accepted under any circumstances. Hall tickets and other details will be sent to the Students in the envelopes provided by them prior to the examination. In case they do not get the same because of any reason it is the sole responsibility of the student to contact the MSE-PP for the same. Before the examination a list of students along with their names, Seat Number and copy of the Hall ticket will also be uploaded on the website a few days prior to examination, so the students can download the hall ticket, write their Seat Number and appear for the Examination. Those who cannot find their names in the list must contact the MSE-PP for the same.
