SCRIPTURE READINGS 33rd Sunday of the Year Reflection

Maximizing Our Talents for God and Nation

Rev. Victor C. Yakubu, Parochial Vicar I attended the Veterans Day parade downtown Phoenix. I enjoyed it. Since my arrival in the United States in 2009, I’ve never missed any of these parades to honor veterans who risked their lives to give Ameri-ca its freedoms. From my perspective, I always wanted to be in the mili-tary to serve my country. But it never came to be. I became a priest to serve mankind in a different way. Honoring veterans is a sure way of recognizing the sacrifices of countless men and women who gave their lives to make the rest of us free so that we might give our best to the world. The turnout was great. God bless America! At the parade I saw young faces as well as the usual old faces. Each time I attend a ceremony like this and I see a mix of all ages, I feel a sense of joy that the old are handing over to the young something of value. The sight of young faces is a sure sign that the veterans’ dreams and aspirations will continue to be defended for the sake of America.

The gospel this Sunday speaks about a man who gave his three servants different amounts of talents while he travelled abroad. On his return he demanded an account of what they did with their talents. The first made five extra talents, the second likewise made two extra talents. But the first, who received one, hid it underground and did not utilize his only talents. He made no gain. Jesus concluded the parable with a seri-ous judgment, “But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” Do you think Jesus was harsh to this man who never invested his only talent? Why would somebody hide his talent instead of investing it? Many reasons may come up in your heart.

Every gift we identify in ourselves is meant to enhance the

growth of society. Just take a moment and do a mental evaluation of the things we use every day. From the cars we use to the coffee maker in the kitchen, or from the computers we use to the internet we surf every now and then; all these are ideas of people with talents used by all to ease our lives. St. Paul writing to the Thessalonians admonished them to be alert because times and seasons come and pass by quickly. He admonished them, “For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. . . Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let us stay alert and sober.” When you recognize the gifts you have, you want to give joy to others without counting the cost. Doing so can make you happy knowing that time is temporal and elusive.

I recognize the many contributions that numerous veterans

have given to America and indeed to our world. Coming from Nigeria, I recognize “America’s exceptionalism” as the quintessential nation that many look up to. Others may hate it, yet, they still cannot underestimate the contributions of the great sons and daughters of America in all walks of life. The military might is one single area that others view America at the global scene. However, looking deeper shows that there are hearts in America that love God and give their best to his Church. Say a prayer for America today. God bless America. Keep praying!

2ND COLLECTION: NOV. 23 ALL MASSES CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN

FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT ORIGINS CCHD was founded in 1970 by the Catholic bishops of the United States as their do-mestic anti-poverty program. ►They realized that outreach through established charitable services was not creating the changes people needed in order to get themselves out of poverty. ►With this goal in mind, the bishops worked to address the underlying policies and systems that perpetuate poverty, as a complement to direct service.

IMPACT CCHD brings catholic social teaching to life. It funds community and economic devel-opment programs across the United States that help poor and marginalized people join together to make decisions, seek solutions to local problems, and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. ►Economic development initiatives help create new businesses and jobs. ►CCHD also provides educational opportunities for Catholics to learn about poverty, stand in solidarity with those affected by it, and reflect on their own responsibility before the great need of others.

INVOLVEMENT You can make a difference: DONATE. Your generous support, in the parish collection and throughout the year, is vital to DDHD’s anti-poverty mission and creates real change. LEARN. Take advantage of CCHD awareness programs to learn more about poverty, those affected by it, and our responsibilities as members of the Church. Visit www.povertyusa.org. PRAY for those who receive CCHD support and for all our brothers and sisters strug-gling with poverty.

“COME and SEE” Sunday, November 16th, in O’Carroll Hall, after 11:00 a.m. Mass

Fr. Dindo Bruno Cuario, the Stewardship Council, and the Come and See Committee

“Come and See” is the name of our orientation for prospective parishion-ers and November 16th will be the first meeting of the new edition of the program. We are inviting the whole parish and especially our most recent registered parishioners to join us that day. This is an opportunity for all to meet fellow parishioners, greet new parishioners, and learn more about parish organizations and ministries.

The theme of the event is taken from Jesus' words to His disciples to “Come and see.” We hope all who come will see both what we offer in spiritual, educational, service and social areas and how we can support each other in those areas. Each of us is strengthened when we can pray, work and share with others in a sup-portive, grateful parish community.

We will have snacks, speakers, and a tour of our campus. It should last about one hour. You are already part of St. Paul’s parish — we are thankful that you are! But you might find it fun to be part of our first meeting, and you might even learn a few things you don’t yet know about St. Paul's.

Joy of the Gospel! Dec. 4, 7:00 p.m. Have you heard about Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation? Have you wanted to read it, but never found the time? Let’s do it together! Join us for a study and group discussion of the Joy of the Gospel. The next meeting will be on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7:00 p.m. in Rooms 5 and 6. See you there!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND FAITHFUL GIVING

Adopt-a-Family Program

It’s hard to believe, but Christmas is about 9 weeks away! As in prior years, St. Paul’s St. Vincent de Paul Society will again host the Adopt-A-Family Program.

As you plan for your holidays, please consider adopting a family, either alone, with other family and friends, or as an organization. Families range from a parent and child to couples with several children and we will be very happy to match you with a family that fits your interests.

As a sponsor of a family, you will be expected to provide the food for their Christmas meal and gifts for family members. Sponsors and their families will be matched in late November and early De-cember to give you sufficient time to purchase the food and gifts and to deliver them to your family in time for Christmas.

In these very tough economic times, some of our families will not have a Christmas meal or gifts under their trees without our help.

If you have any questions or are interested in

adopting a family, please leave a message for Regina Castellani at 602-795-5767 or e-mail [email protected]

FAIR TRADE UPDATES

Many of you know that St. Paul’s has sold Fair Trade goods once a month outside Mass as well as at the Women’s Guild Gold-en Bear Marketplace and during the month prior to Christmas. How much do you know about Fair Trade? Below are excerpts from the Fair Trade USA website and a link (URL address) appears at the end of this article.

This knowledge will allow you to become familiar with the concept and take Fair Trade purchases into your own hands. Whether you go to a Fair Trade website and order directly from the suppliers, or

look for Fair Trade Certified goods at your local grocery store, it is important you know that buying Fair Trade is a very Catholic thing to do. While we will no longer be selling these goods out-side the Church or during the Christmas season, we encourage you to purchase Fair Trade products and share this wonderful opportunity with your family and friends. Below the article information are two addi-tional websites from which you can order directly for the Fair Trade coffee (Café Justo) and Chocolate (Divine) that you have come to love.
