President Zuma assesses public transport infrastructure in TshwaneWords: Staff Reporter

President Jacob Zuma has this morning, 06 March 2015, undertaken unannounced visits to various public transport facilities around Pretoria to assess and monitor the standard and state of public transport infrastructure as part of his Presidential Siyahlola Service Delivery Monitoring Programme. President Zuma commenced his monitoring programme by visiting the busy Danneboom Railway Station in Mamelodi Township in the early hours of the morning to monitor the state of public rail transport system and also to interact with commuters. At the railway station, commuters shared their daily challenges to the President particularly on issues of train intervals as well the standard of safety and security within the coaches and the station in general. There was a general concern over constant train delays, which tended to lead to a number of people arriving late at work or school. Another commuter appealed to the President to improve the standard of security at the station and within coaches, and added that women in particular as well as schoolchildren and senior citizens were the most vulnerable with regard to criminal activities that occur daily within trains. The commuters urged the President to intervene because there have been numerous community protests against these challenges but there have been no improvements. President Zuma assured the commuters that government departments as well as relevant state-owned enterprises will swiftly intervene to ensure that the situation was back to normal and that commuters were safe at all times. The President also visited the Danneboom Taxi Rank to interact with commuters and then proceeded to new Nana Sita Tshwane Rapid Transit Bus station in Hatfield where he boarded the A Re Yeng Bus to Skinner Street in the CBD. President Zuma listened intently as various passengers expressed appreciation of the new bus system, its efficiency and convenience, with one student, however, stating that it was a bit expensive for her pockets. Addressing members of the media after the programme, President Zuma said he was generally impressed with the improvements of the

capital city's public transport infrastructure and vowed to urge local government to make further improvements. "During this Siyahlola Programme, I have personally identified some positive improvements and serious challenges concerning our public transport. I am more concerned with the railway transport system because I have personally experienced and witnessed the challenges faced by our people and indeed a lot need to be done to improve our railway transport system. "In Mamelodi people told me that they were always delayed at work due to late arrival of trains and that the standard of safety and security was also a serious problem. Therefore I will engage relevant government departments and institutions to swiftly deal with these problems so that more trains are provided to ensure that the situation is addressed immediately," said President Zuma. The President said he identified no pressing issues that he identified at the taxi rank as well as at the bus station. He added that government will continue to improve the country's public transport system and that he was especially impressed with the new Tshwane rapid transit bus service. During his State of the Nation Address in the 12 February 2015, the President announced that improvement of transport system was one of the government's nine point plans that aims to ignite economic growth and create jobs. The President also indicated that the infrastructure programme continued to expand transport networks and to improve roads, which augur well for economic growth and that R6 billion would be spent in 13 cities on planning, building and operating integrated public transport networks during this financial year. President Zuma will continue with his Siyahlola programme to assess and monitor various government projects across the country, particularly infrastructure and economic development projects to ensure the improvement of service delivery and the lives of all South Africans.

Nastee Nev's 0808 Sweet Soul gold selling album won the Best Dance Album at the Metro FM Awards late February. Deejay & Producer Nastee Nev may be a new found name among many, but he is definitely no stranger to the music industry. Born and raised in the township of Ga-Rankuwa in Pretoria, Nastee Nev's interest and musical journey started at the age of 10 listening to old school vinyl record sounds of Bob Marley, Gladys knight, Nina Simone and many other legends. It was in 1989 that he was introduced to house music by his long time friend Wesi Lefyedi. It didn't take long before his interest in Deejaying developed into a

career and by the early 90's, Nastee Nev had started playing at small parties and street bashes! His meeting with Deejay Positive K, one of SouthAfrica's most respected Deejays, was nothing short of a blessing which was then that he got introduced to vinyl, and playing alongside Positive K his love for music was soon to develop into a huge passion. 1995 marked a year of great things to come as Nastee Nev's Deejaying career took off. He soon became a resident Deejay at club Gemini where he played alongside a number of Deejays, the likes of Christos, Vinnie Da Vinci, Bob Mabena, Evidence Kemp, Quincy Kekana and Aldrin Mogotsi.

Control system in STBs to protect manufacturing sector

Cabinet’s decision to include a control system in set top boxes (STBs) in the implementation of digital migration will not control how broadcasters manage their content, the Department of Communications said on Tuesday. The department said this when it appeared before the Joint Portfolio Committee on Communications and Telecommunications and Postal Services at the National Assembly to give an update on the readiness to implement digital migration. Norman Njelele, the head of policy for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), said set top boxes are a transitional tool aimed at enabling migration from analogue to digital television. “A control system does not mean a conditional access system nor does it mean an encryption of the signal to control access to content by viewers. “A control system refers to a security feature to encourage the local electronic manufacturing sector,” he said. The briefing follows an announcement by Cabinet to include a control system in set top boxes following a protracted impasse between government and broadcasters on the inclusion of a control system in STBs. Cabinet’s approval of the Broadcasting Digital Migration Amendment Policy paves the way for government to implement digital migration, which is expected to improve broadcast quality and clear the radio frequency spectrum currently occupied by broadcasters to free up the much-needed next generation wireless mobile broadband service. The disagreement between free-to-air broadcasters on digital migration has been the main reason South Africa was unable to implement DTT within the International Telecommunications Union’s agreed timelines to switch from analogue to digital broadcasting signal. The ITU’s agreed deadline for the switch off of analogue television signals is 17 June 2015. Njelele said the

inclusion of the control system in set top boxes would be defined once the policy has been published. He said in the event of theft, the set top boxes would be designed in a way that they do not work outside the country’s borders. “The set top boxes must have minimal switching on or off security features to protect the subsidized STBs from theft or leaving South African borders. “They must also have capabilities to enable the provision of government information and services,” he said. In its meeting on 4 March, Cabinet decided that in rolling out digital migration, it will provide free set top boxes to five million poor TV-owning households in South Africa. Priority will be given to the border region areas of the country to avoid and minimise signal interference between those regions and neighbouring countries. The dates to switch from analogue to digital broadcasting signal will be determined by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi in consultation with the Cabinet, Njelele said. – SAnews.gov.za

This past Sunday we celebrated the International Women’s Day (IWD), which this year happened to take place at the same time as our country marked the 60th Anniversary of the Freedom Charter. These two events exalt the vital role women have played, and continue to play, in virtually all spheres of life. We use occasions such as the International Women’s Day to take stock and review progress, as well as barriers that continue to militate against women’s empowerment in our country. They offer an opportunity to elevate women’s emancipation and gender equality. Indeed, as a country, we have done well in ensuring women claim their rightful place in society. In 1994, women constituted a mere 27.8% of the 400 seats in the South African parliament to the current 41%. Similarly, the representation of women in provincial legislatures increased from 25.4% to 37%. To this end, the governing ANC has consciously adopted a 50% women representation in all decision making structures. This has led to increased female representation in all spheres of government at the legislative and executive levels. A lot has been achieved in ensuring that the people govern. There is no doubt that South Africa’s gender parity laws, implemented since the dawn of our democracy, have seen women rise to positions of power in the state, the private sector and indeed civil society. Although there is still much to do before we are content with the gains of women, there is no doubt that the status of women in our country has improved. To accelerate the empowerment of women in this term of office, my department is planning to convene national and provincial dialogues between March and June this year in order to provide a platform for discourse on the strides made towards the attainment of women empowerment and gender equality in South Africa and identify obstacles against women’s progress. The dialogues will give women a voice to tell their stories. The national and provincial dialogues will lead to the development of the ‘’Report on the Status of Women,’’ to be launched by the President on 9 August 2015. – SAnews.gov.za

CAREERS

If you're thinking of getting a new job this year, make sure your CV is ready to go as soon as the perfect position lands in your inbox. Being first to apply doesn't guarantee you an interview, but being ready saves time and stress when the right position appears. And a cool, calm, collected approach to the application process can go a long way to ensuring you make a great impression.

Craft and improve your cover letter - Cover letters are very important. They introduce you to the employer, and if they don't like what they see there, your application could be rejected without a second glance. Your cover letter is also a great place to put important information that you wouldn't include in your CV.

Clean up your social presence - Potential employers and recruiters will look at social media channels to gain an understanding of who you are. Google your name. Like what you see? If not, take the time to update and improve your online presence and align your online reputation with your work interests. Help employers to see that you enjoy what you do and that you're good at it too.

Stick to the job title - If you've worked in different industries you've probably gained experience in a variety of fields. When applying for a job, make sure you customize your CV according to the job you're applying for. For example, if you're applying for a position in sales, find the qualities and examples of strong sales experience in your previous jobs that would strengthen your application. Delete any information that is not relevant and remember to keep it short,

How to keep your CV updated in 2015 detailed and always include supporting evidence. Research the company and align your achievements and qualities to what the employer is looking for.

Prove you're the best - Highlight your top achievements for each job or consider placing a “career highlights” section in your CV. The employer must see what you could bring to the team and why you're the best choice. Be careful not to brag or be too vague. Offer specifics, such as how your contribution improved sales by 25% in the first quarter, or how your suggestions resulted in a 30% increase in online registrations.

Prepare your CV for sending - When an interesting job pops up, you should have a neat CV ready to go. Keep in mind that potential recruiters and employers might not view your CV on a PC – some might look at it on their mobile devices as well. Ensure your CV can be easily read on any device and always have a text-based version ready. –Career24.com

Opportunity for SA companies to market themselves

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) is to participate in national and international exhibitions, trade shows and pavilions in different countries to promote market access and showcase South African products and services. Trade and Industry Minister, Dr Rob Davies, has called on South African companies to participate in these exhibitions for the new financial year (2015/16), which starts in April 2015. The department will again continue to lead business delegations in the different sectors to participate in these platforms to ensure that its objective of improving trade between South Africa and the world is realised, Minister Davies said on Wednesday. Part of the department's mandate is to contribute towards the positioning of South Africa as a reliable trade partner by expanding the exporter base of the country, thereby increasing the export supply and sales of South African products. “The dti oversees the implementation of the National Exporter Development Programme (NEDP), which seeks to enhance the national export culture through an extensive capacity building initiative called the Global Exporter Passport Initiative, as well as an effective and efficient National Trade Information System,” said the Minister. He said companies that are competitive in the South African market, have been in business for at least two years and are export-ready stand to benefit from the dti's Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) scheme. Minister Davies urged South African companies to use the host of incentives available from the dti to access opportunities provided and contribute to building the economy of the country. “Among the many incentives that are available to assist manufacturers and emerging exporters

in the dti is the EMIA scheme, which develops export market for South African products and services and recruits new foreign direct investment into the country,” he said. The list of upcoming exhibitions, trade shows and national pavilions is available on www.thedti.gov.za. –Sanews.gov.za

Title: Recovering Democracy in South AfricaAuthor: Raymond SuttnerPublisher: Jacana

Building a South Africa that provides the opportunity for all to be creative, productiveand free human beings.South Africa's hard-won democracy was the main victim of the chaos in parliament during President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation Address. In Recovering Democracy in South Africa, Suttner brings together the best of his recent thinking; he offers a fresh look at the wide range of contentious issues that currently preoccupy South Africans, from the threat to constitutionalism to problems with leadership and questions of ethics. The book is as much an in-depth engagement with our difficult present as it is a damning account of the politics of the Zuma era.It is illogical to think that the chaos of last week, which first saw cellphone signals jammed and then later witnessed security personnel rushing into the National Assembly to evict members of the EFF, represented anything good about our democracy.

Movie: Kill The MessengerCast: Andy Garcia,Barry Pepper,Jeremy Renner,Lucas Hedges,Mary Elizabeth Winstead,Michael Sheen,Michael Williams,Oliver Platt,Paz Vega,Ray Liotta,Rosemary DeWitt,Tim Blake NelsonDirector: Michael Cuesta

In the mid-1990s, journalist Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner) uncovers information that shows the CIA was aware of major drug dealers who were smuggling huge amounts of cocaine into the United States and to use the profit to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Despite threats from drug kingpins and CIA operatives, Webb goes public with the evidence, publishing a series of articles. However, he then becomes the target of a vicious smear campaign that threatens his career and family and drives him to the point of suicide. The first thing that roped me in was that the film was based on a true story, the second was that it's about on a journalist who used his right to freedom of speech, regardless of what the consequences were. The story of Gary Webb, takes the viewers on a journey that should open their eyes to the dangers a journalist faces when handling classified information that the world deserves to know about. The plot of the story also raises concern for how oblivious people can be about who they have chosen to run their country. Although an American film, it teaches a lesson that all people no matter which country should learn from. With regards to the film itself, the story told in a way that will be easy for people to understand however, a lack of depth in the film will leave curious minds unsatisfied.

ENTERTAINMENTArtist/s: Chris Brown and TygaAlbum: Fan Of A FanGenre: Hip Hop/R&BYear OF Release: 2015

Chris Brown and Tyga present themselves as friends, but on their first full album together, they seem more like enablers. A true pal would have responded to lines like "She'll cook and clean, I got it made/Handcuffed like she a slave" (from Tyga, on the narcissistic sex fantasy "Remember Me") with an intervention, not more studio time. Even clowns can make great music, though, and Fan of a Fan has its share of low-end R&B bangers. A drifting sample of the words "I need you" makes "Ayo" the most notable of these, hinting at the sort of vulnerability the rest of the record tries so desperately to conceal.

Artist: KOAlbum: Skhanda RepublicGenre: Hip Hop/New Age KwaitoYear OF Release: 2014

New Age Kwaito is the sound on rapper K.O.'s debut solo album, Skhanda Republic. I could definitely hear the (thick) kwaito influence throughout the album. This is not a bad thing at all as there many great party anthems aside from the popular one, Caracara. It seems as if the song was a litmus test for the rest of the album because the Skhanda Republic's sound has been directed the same way. From then on it seems the Mpumalanga native could do no wrong. With a cool million views for the video of Caracara, he went on and Renegade'd AKA on his own song (Run Jozi) like Eminem did to Jay-Z but that's a story for another day... The album opens with Delakufa, sampling a M'du song. I'm not sure which one but the it's the one with very few lyrics and an infectious bassline (much like everything he released circa Chepad). You'd think the brightest star on this album will be Caracara, but you'd be terribly mistaken: Son of a Gun is K.O's greatest moment. It's easy to see that this member of Teargas timed his release quite well.

Ga-rankuwa Kids Olympics takes shape

Early March 2015

Words and Images: Enneth Mgidi

The Direlang Bana Forum which is formed by different early learning centres in Mabopane came together on Friday to have their first day of Olympics in the year 2015, The sports day took place at Garankuwa Stadium, it saw over 40 kids from different centres compete against each other on different sports such as wheel racing, relays, hopping ball etc. One of the committee members of the forum Joyce Mashigo said, “We saw the kids Olympics once in Soshanguve and liked the idea of not only bringing and teaching kids about Olympics at a young age, but also bringing teachers from different schools together to engage and share knowledge”. The forum which was started in 2008 does not only come together during the Olympics, but they also work together and exchange information on how to get sponsorship for their different Early learning Centres. The 40 winners from different early learning centres will compete with other Tshwane centres on the 17th of March at a Pretoria stadium.
