MOTHER OF GOD COVINGTON, KY
JULY 26, 202017TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends, I have heard that there is an old Chinese curse that
says, "May you live in interesting time." Whether there is such a curse, it certainly makes sense and certainly applies to the times in which we live. 2020 has been anything but boring.
I want all of you to know how much I miss seeing all of you. Even for those who are coming to Sunday Mass, I am not allowed to process out and greet people as it could lead to a grouping up of people, violating the social distancing that is necessary. I get it, but it is still difficult. I also miss the coffee and donuts between Masses, when so many of you would gather for fellowship and talk. We are a community and that sense of community that is so profound at Mother of God is unfortunately limited at this time.
In the second reading at Mass this Sunday, Saint Paul writes in his Letter to the Romans, "Brothers and sisters, we know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." There are many comforting promises in the Scriptures, but this is one of my favorites. All things, even pandemics and social unrest, work for the good for those who love God. In my own life, and in the lives of so many I have met, I have watched God turn garbage into gold, over and over. He will do it again.
We are all experiencing "pandemic exhaustion." We desperately want to get back to our old ways of doing things. Some of us are spending too much time locked away at home, isolated from family and friends, and from the activities that are so meaningful to us. Six months of cabin fever, with no end in sight, is a heavy burden.
With lots of prayer, and with trust in God, we will get through this time of trial and we will come out on the other side better than when we began.
Please know of my prayers for you, and please, pray for me.
Father Mike
BISHOP FOYS' RETIREMENTWhen a bishop reaches his seventy-fifth birthday,
he submits his resignation. His resignation may be accepted at that time, or he may be asked to stay on as administrator of the diocese until the next bishop is appointed and installed.
Bishop Foys will turn seventy-five years old this Monday, July 27. On that day, he will submit his resignation. Whether he will be staying on as administrator or will officially begin his retirement, has not been announced as of yet. The last information that I heard was that, when he does step down, he plans to take six months for prayer and renewal in a monastery, and then will divide his time between the Diocese of Covington and the Diocese of Steubenville, which is his home diocese.
There was an article on the Bishop's retirement and a number of articles on the time that he has spent here in last week's Messenger. Take time to read them.
Please join me in praying for Bishop Foys as he begins this new stage of his life and ministry.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!The month of July 2020, is the 50th anniversary of
the Mother of God Contemporary Ensemble Group. We have been so beautifully served by the many men and women who have been part of this group throughout the ages. We want to express our gratitude to the Ensemble and our congratulations on such a momentous anniversary.
I hope to be able to present a brief history of the group soon.
Let us keep the members of the Ensemble in our prayers and wish them well, and thank them when you see them.
DIOCESAN PARISH ANNUAL APPEALThis year's DPAA process was shut down because
of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Diocese has been handling it through the mail, rather than through the parishes. We have received the first report of the DPAA results for the parish.
The parish goal for this year's DPAA is $48,400.00. So far, $59,022.42 has been pledged, and of that $52,107.50 has been received. The money pledged is $10,622.42 over the parish goal. Everything that comes in over the parish goal comes back directly to the parish. As we have reached that goal, your future donations will come to the support of the parish, and will not be taxed for the support of the Diocese.
Only 81 households have pledged so far to the DPAA. I ask that all of you who have not pledged, consider doing so. This is a great way to give your support to the parish, especially in a time of crisis and struggle.
Thank you to all who have donated and to those who will donate.
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 26, 2020
INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?Are you interested in becoming Catholic, or in
learning more about the Catholic faith? Do you feel that God may be calling you into the Catholic Church? If so, I would really like to speak with you to help you prepare for the sessions.
Our Convert Instruction Classes will begin on Tuesday, September 1, at 6:30 p.m.
THE GREAT PARDON OF ASSISIIn last week's bulletin, I wrote about the Great
Pardon of Assisi, a plenary indulgence, granted by Jesus Himself to Saint Francis of Assisi. It is offered on next Sunday, August 2. A plenary indulgence is a total pardon of all temporal punishment due to sin.
Those who wish to gain the plenary indulgence on that day must be 1) in a state of grace, 2) be free of intentional attachment to any sin, venial or mortal, 3) go to any Catholic Church, and 4) pray the Creed (Apostles Creed or Nicene Creed), an Our Father and a Hail Mary, for the intentions of the Pope, and 5) go to Confession and Communion within one week before or after August 2. (If one is not in a state of grace, it is necessary to go to Confession before that date, and before receiving Communion.)
If because of the pandemic, or other serious health issues, you cannot go to Confession and Communion, you can fulfill the requirements spiritually, with a firm resolution to go to Confession and Communion as soon as it is possible to do so.
SAINT MARTHA"Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about
many things." In these words, Jesus was not correcting Martha because of her hard work and her acts of charity and hospitality. Those are certainly virtues which are absolutely praiseworthy.
Many of us can identify with Martha. Many of us are worried and upset about many things. We are worried about the Coronavirus, about the rioting and disruption in our streets, in our financial state, about our kids or our parents or other loved ones. We worry about the election, about our health, etc. Many of us are not only worried, but very upset. The level of anger in our world today is truly frightening.
Jesus invites Martha to do what her sister Mary has already learned to do – to sit at His feet and listen to His words and allow Him to carry our burdens, our fears and our worries. Recently, at Sunday Mass, we heard Jesus say, "Come to me all you who are weary and are heavily burdened. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
When we, like Martha, are busy running around in a hundred different directions, believing that only we can keep the world from falling into ruin and disaster, then we are going to be anxious and upset. Our focus is on ourselves, and on our own limited resources to meet the many demands that we place upon ourselves. But when our focus is on Christ, and on the infinitely powerful God, then we can go about the business of our lives, without falling into worry, fear, and anger.
Jesus invites Martha, and us, to trust in Him, to lay our weary burdens down, and to know His peace and blessing and love.
This Wednesday, July 29, is the Feast of Saint Martha.
SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLASaint Ignatius of Loyola was born in Spain of a
noble family. He read the lives of many of the heroes of his time and being a hopeless romantic, dreamed of becoming a great warrior and hero himself. He became a soldier, and fought in many battles but in 1521, in the Battle of Pamplona, he was struck by a cannon ball which shattered his leg. He had to undergo surgery and a long recovery period. His fighting days were over.
During his recovery, Ignatius came across a book of the Lives of the Saints and read it avidly. Here, he who could no longer hope for the life of a hero on the battle field, had a vision of spiritual battle, of becoming holy, and of leading others to holiness. He would become a warrior for Christ.
Ignatius and a few other men began the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), a religious order that fought against the heresies of the day and went on mission to Asia, South America, He became known as a very talented spiritual director and wrote The Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius which has become perhaps the most important basis for retreats, within the Jesuit order, and elsewhere.
On Friday, July 31, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
