Not many are aware that M. M. Dhandapani Desikar sangplayback in a film for Chittoor V. Nagaiah who was himself anaccomplished musician with a good voice and style of singing.Similarly, in the AVM production ‘Penn’, the comedian J. P.Chandrababu sang the hit song ‘Kalyanam Kalyanam’ for S.Balachandar, a musical genius and also a good singer himself. In a chat with this writer during the late 1970s, SB told him,“It was a comedy song and I felt that Babu could sing it betterthan I could, and you know the results! There was no egoproblem at all, only the film mattered. You know, Randor, I amalso a filmmaker!”

In the early years of playback singing, the gramophone discsdid not carry the name of the singer. Instead the name of thecharacter was printed on the label. For example, in a duet sungby P. Bhanumathi and T. A. Mothi in the Gemini Studiosproduction, written and directed by Acharya (T. G.Raghavachari), ‘Apoorva Sahotharargal’ (1949), the disc didnot carry the name of Mothi (a well known playback singer ofyesteryears). Instead the name of the character played by thestar and fine actor, M. K. Radha, ‘Vijay’ was given on the label.

As the years rolled over the horizon, the playback systemcame to be accepted as normal and many singers entered thefield. Today most actors and actresses do not sing with theirvoices. Some of them do not even speak either! Yet they receiveawards for ‘Best Acting’! Ridiculous? But that’s the way it is inIndian cinema! And nobody cares. Neither the film folks northe moviegoers! Happy situation indeed. Cheers!

MOVIES AND MUSICIANS - M. S. SUBBULAKSHMI

A living legend, an icon of the Music of India, internationalcelebrity, charisma-plus person and charming lady of incred-ible humility and more. That’s M. S. Subbulakshmi, affection-ately known as ‘MS’ around the world. Blessed by the Muse, agedid not dare to wither her mellifluous voice or her singing talentsand skills.

However very few know that it was Tamil Cinema whichcatapulted her to limelight and stardom in many worlds. Herinnings in cinema was short with only four films ‘Seva Sadhanam’(1938), ‘Sakunthalai’ (1940), ‘Savithri’ (1941) and ‘Meera’(1945). ‘Meera’ and ‘Sakunthalai’ are rightly and deservedlyhailed as South Indian movie classics. The songs rendered byher in the four movies continue to be as popular as ever not onlyin India but also elsewhere in the world .

‘Maa Ramanan Uma Ramanan’ (Seva Sadhanam),‘Aanandam En Solvene’, ‘Engum Nirai Naadha Bramham’,‘Enthan Idathu Tholum’, ‘Sukumaraa En Thaapam’, ‘IraivaaNaan Oar Pedhai’, ‘Manam Kulira’ (Sakunthalai), ‘ManameKanamum Maravaadhe’, ‘Deviyai Poojai Seivaai’, ‘SolluKuzhandaai’, ‘Bruhi Mukundehi’ (Savithri), ‘Kaatrinile VarumGeetham’, ‘Nandha Baalaa’, ‘Giridhara Gopala’ and‘Brindavanathil Kannan Valarndha’ (Meera) are some of theimmortal movie melodies of MS. The audio cassettes of her filmsongs are best -sellers to this day after more than half acentury.

Madurai Shanmughavadivu Subbulakshmi was born in1916 and inherited musical talents from her famed motherShanmughavadivu, a noted veena exponent of her day. Blessedwith a sparklingly melodious voice and good looks, young MSfollowed her mother’s footsteps and made a mark in Maduraias star material even as a teenager. Besides vocal music, shelearnt to play on the veena at which she acquired considerableexpertise. She had many gurus besides her mother and one ofthem was the singer, stage and film actor and music composerS. V. Venkataraman who was then located in Madurai. In lateryears Venkataraman would compose many of her hit songs infilms like ‘Meera’ and ‘Sakunthalai’.

Interestingly he taught the young MS many Meera bhajansand both were then blissfully unaware that years later theywould be involved in the making of the musical classic ‘Meera’.

By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED

Friend King Mahabali of my good oldKeralam told me that he was one of thespecial invitees to heaven at the banquetthrown by the writers there in honour of Ra.Ki. Rangarajan who has recently joined theWriters’ Club in heaven.

Mahabali, a polytongued king, knew hisMalayalam,Tamil and English as a nativesince, in heaven, He is God who knows allthat is happening and has happened.

Mahabali had been anxious about thenon-appearance of Ra. Ki’s ‘Naalu Moolai’for several months in ‘Anna Nagar Times’and its sister Times. Maha was updated onthis by Ra.Ki telling him that he had, apartfrom writing over one thousand stories andnovels, had kept the hungry Anna NagarTimes well fed with his weekly quota andthat a time comes in the life of every personwhen he thinks “enough is enough”, unlike inthe case of our politicians whose horizonskeep expanding even to the Mars.

Mahabali then asked Ra.Ki if he knew aguy in Madras named Sadanand who writesabout His annual Onam trips to Kerala .

“Of course I do. He too writes a column inEnglish for Anna Nagar Times. But It is notbecause of this but because we wereneighbours in Vellala Street inPurasaiwalkam for some years when I wasin the editorial team of “Kumudam” ,that webecame friends and I used to lend him mostof the English books that I used to get frommy Editor.”

“I have been trying to get him on his land-line but the line is dead”, lamented Mahabali.

“No wonder. Anna Nagar Western Exten-sion is the most dug-up part of the throbbingChennai. The concerned departments arelaying water-pipes cheek by jowl with sew-age lines, allowing the two to coalesce. Thena brain wave hits the telephone chaps whouse the crevices to repair an imaginary faultthat goes awry and all the phones in thevicinity go dead. That’s why Sadanand isincommunicado. But he has a mobile num-ber ....”

“I lost my cell phone when I was packingmy bags for this convention. In hell theydon’t permit mobile communication . Theyseem to have a stingy Finance Ministerunlike in India where Chidambaram is awelcome change. I meet all those literatiwho made our college days miserable withtheir rantings”

“We, I suppose, can see the fun in parlia-ment thanks to the coalgate unless thetoothpaste company grabs an injunctionfrom the Supreme Court against using theword that is phonetically identical to theirproduct that is orally and medically good, while coal is black and the mining allegedlyBillinously illegal. See you again next year!
