McFatrich Era Opens With Bulldog Invitational

MSU Opens With Arkansas-Pine Bluff ...Friday’s 2015 season opener will mark only the second time in history that MSU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff have faced each other. The only previous meeting came in 2008, when State took down the Golden Lions, 3-0.

Bulldogs Take On ULM ...State and ULM will battle for the 14th time, with MSU holding a 9-4 advantage in the series. The Warhawks took last year’s meeting in Huntsville, Texas, 3-0. The Bulldogs had won the previous six meetings before last year’s contest.

State Versus The Tigers ...In-state foes MSU and Jackson State will meet for the 22nd time in history in the Bulldogs’ Saturday opener. Mississippi State has domi-nated the series with a 19-2 advantage, including winning the last 14 matches. The last time these two teams met was in 2012, when MSU captured a 3-0 victory in Starkville.

Mississippi State Battles Southern Utah ...Mississippi State’s tournament finale will be against Southern Utah, a team the Bulldogs have not faced in their 40-year history.

Bulldogs Against The Conferences ...Of MSU’s four opponents, two are from the SWAC, one from the Sun Belt Conference and another from the Big Sky Conference. The Bulldogs are 53-46 against Sun Belt opponents, 27-2 versus SWAC foes and 2-7 against teams in the Big Sky.

Scouting The Bulldogs’ Opponents ...Arkansas-Pine Bluff went 12-21 and 6-2 in the SWAC last season. The Golden Lions’ second-leading attacker returns for the 2015 season, as Whitney Harris accummulated 200 kills in 2014. She also led UAPB in blocks last season with 83. UAPB lost both their leader in kills and assists from last year.

ULM enters Friday after going 9-24 last season and 3-17 in the Sun Belt. The Warhawks bring back their 2014 leaders in kills (Hope Pawlik, 325), assists (Bayleigh Hoffman, 989) and blocks (Kaitlyn Shearer, 79).

Jackson State finished 2014 11-21 and 5-3 in the SWAC. The Tigers return their 2014 leaders in kills (Taija Thomas, 279), assists (Jenna Sidiqui, 687) and blocks (Mikayla Rolle, 98).

Southern Utah went 14-15 and 6-10 in the Big Sky in 2014. The Thun-derbirds return their leading attacker in Remo Gaogao (337 kills) and their 2014 leader in assists, Faith Ma’afala (1147 assists).

New Head Coaches Trend ...This weekend’s Bulldog Invitational will feature three programs with new head coaches. Along with MSU’s McFatrich, Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Dustin Sahlmann and Southern Utah’s Craig Choate will also be coaching their first match this weekend with their respective pro-grams.

Harris Returns After Stellar Season ...MSU sophomore Payton Harris returns for her sophomore cam-paign after a rookie season that saw her be named MSU’s third AVCA All-American and also to the All-SEC Freshman Team.

Harris finished 2014 with a school record 735 digs, falling just five short of setting the SEC single-season record. She also set the school and SEC records for digs in a match with 59 against Northwestern State on Sept. 13 in a five-set victory.

Team Captains Announced For 2015 ...Coach McFatrich announced his team captains for the 2015 season a week before the 2015 season opener, naming seniors Shelby Ander-ton and Alex Warren and junior transfer Evie Grace Singleton as the Bulldogs’ leaders for his first season. The Fatch And Singleton Duo Continues ...Since the age of 13, Singleton has been under the leadership of McFatrich and her final two years of collegiate volleyball will not change that. After spending the previous two seasons at UCA with Fatch, Singleton transferred to Mississippi State after her head coach took the top spot with the volleyball Bulldogs.

Former Star UCA Setter Added To Staff ...Once a Southland Player of the Year and a three-time Southland Setter of the Year, Marissa Collins is now on the sidelines coaching the Bull-dogs. McFatrich named Collins his graduate assistant coach earlier this week after a stellar collegiate and overseas professional career.

While at UCA, Collins was also the 2010 SLC Freshman of the Year and a four-time All-SLC honoree, including landing on the All-SLC First Team three times. In 2013, Collins became the first player in SLC history to claim the SLC Player and Setter of the Year awards in the same season.

Former Bulldog Taking On Manager Role ...After donning the Maroon and White last season on the court, Kelly Costeira has taken to a manager role for the 2015 season, working behind-the-scenes to keep the Bulldogs going. Costeira’s duties range from statting practices to helping organize player practice and match day gear and other day-to-day operations for MSU volleyball.

McFatrich Era Opens With Bulldog Invitational

A Look At The 2015 Roster ...McFatrich’s first Bulldog squad consists of 17 total players with 10 returning letterwinners and seven newcomers. Of those 10 returners, five are seniors (Anderton, Amber Gass, Emily Howard, Ellen Stuart and Warren). Of the seven newcomers, five are freshmen, while two (Jazmyne Johnson and Singleton) are junior transfers.

Transfers Incoming ...As mentioned, two of MSU’s seven newcomers transferred in for the 2015 season. Singleton comes to Starkville after spending the prior two years with McFatrich at UCA, while Johnson transferred to State from Middle Tennessee. She joins Anderton as the Bulldogs’ second MT transfer, after the senior switched to the Maroon and White last season.

Sato, The First Family Of Volleyball ...Freshman setter Blossom Sato comes from a long line of volleyball greatness and will look to continue her family’s excellence as she begins her rookie campaign at MSU.

Sato’s mother, Liane, lettered at San Diego State from 1985-86 and was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team in 1988 and 1992, when the U.S. won the bronze medal.

Her uncle, Eric Sato, was a member of the 1988 U.S. Men’s National Team that claimed gold and the 1992 squad that earned bronze. Her other uncle, Gary Sato, lettered at UC-Santa Barbara as an All-Amer-ican outside hitter and served as the U.S.’s head coach in the 1985 FIVB World Cup gold medal finish. Sato has over 20 years of coaching experience for the USVMNT.

Jersey Watch 2015 ...Three Bulldogs will be donning new jersey numbers for the 2015 season. Senior Amber Gass switched from No. 11 to No. 19, while ju-nior Cheyenne Spell went from No. 22 to No. 3 and sophomore Ericka Timberlake switched from No. 24 to No. 4.

A Little Texas Flavor ...Of the 17 on the MSU roster for the season, eight call the state of Texas home, the most of any place represented on the Bulldog team. Coming in second is California, which has four on the Maroon and White.

New Name, New Digs For The Griss ...In its 19th year as the home of MSU volleyball, The Newell-Grissom Building underwent a number of upgrades this past summer. Along with its new nickname “The Griss” which was coined by McFatrich, the Bulldogs’ home received a new, sleek gray court, along with a reno-vated locker room, a team film room, new wall graphics, new outside graphics and a fresh coat of paint around the building.

SEC Network = More Volleyball For Fans ...The SEC Network, which turned a year oldin early August, has already blown expectations out of the water. Since its launch last fall, the Network has quintupled national coverage of soccer and volleyball as it enters its second year.

SEC To Broadcast All MSU Home Matches ...Of the Bulldogs 16 home matches in 2015, six will be nationally broad-casted on the SEC Network. The remaining 10 matches will be shown on the SEC Network +. Four of MSU’s away matches will be shown on the Network, while three others will be aired on the Plus. Fans can access SEC Network + matches through the WatchESPN app or ESPN3.com.

McFatrich Era Opens With Bulldog Invitational

David McFatrich, who directed Central Arkansas to NCAA Tour-nament appearances in two of his four seasons as head coach, has been named Mississippi State’s new head volleyball coach, athletic director Scott Stricklin announced Monday. The hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learn-ing.

In his four seasons at the helm of the Sugar Bears, McFatrich showed no fear in going toe-to-toe with the nation’s elite, annual-ly facing programs such as Penn State, Washington, Florida State, Kansas and Oklahoma. Over the past four years, he has amassed an overall record of 96-36 (.727) with a Southland Conference record of 56-11 (.839).

Also upon his arrival in 2007, UCA’s RPI was in the 240’s. Since then, the Sugar Bears climbed up to an RPI as high as 44th national-ly.

Arriving at UCA in 2007 as an assistant, McFatrich earned a pro-motion to head coach of the Sugar Bears in 2011. In his eight total seasons, he saw UCA capture nearly 200 victories, a rate of 25 per season.

McFatrich saw his biggest success the last three years, tallying a record of 46-6 (.885) and a Southland Tournament record of 9-2 (.818). The Sugar Bears averaged nearly 27 wins per season, while piling up numerous championships to help build McFatrich’s legacy as one of the nation’s up-and-coming coaches.

In his eight years at UCA, McFatrich, the 2013 Southland Coach of the Year, produced four Southland Conference Regular Season Championships, two Southland Conference Tournament Cham-pionships and four Southland East Division crowns. Individually, McFatrich has produced one ESPN Academic All-American, five Southland Conference Players of the Year, two Southland Liberos of the year, three Southland Freshman of the Year and five Southland Setters of the Year.

In addition, Sugar Bear players have captured numerous con-ference player of the week awards. Twenty-two UCA players have been named All-Southland Conference, with 19 of those earning first-team laurels.

Most recently, McFatrich faced a tall task in 2014 after the gradu-ation of six players, but took the challenge head on. The Sugar Bears played for a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season in the Southland Conference tournament finals and reached the 20-win milestone for the seventh time in his eight years with the program.

In 2014, McFatrich’s Sugar Bears extend the program’s confer-ence winning streak to 38-consecutive matches dating back to 2012, which stands as the longest such streak in Southland Confer-ence history.

McFatrich and UCA finished out 2013 in grand style as the Sugar Bears won their second-straight Southland Conference regular sea-son title, their second-straight conference tournament champion-ship and made their second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tour-

nament. UCA posted a 29-4 record, highlighted by a victory against No. 9 Kansas. That squad became the first Southland team in 23 years to capture the regular season and tournament titles in back-to-back years.

Along the way, the Sugar Bears boasted one of the longest win-ning streaks in the nation at 22 matches, while also finishing the reg-ular season ranked No. 17 in the Volleyblog Seattle Poll and No. 44 in the RPI.

In 2012, McFatrich led UCA to a 30-5 ledger and Southland Confer-ence regular season and tournament titles. The season saw UCA cap-ture a win against Big 12 foe Texas Tech and earn the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Spanning from 2012-14, McFatrich led the Sugar Bears to 38-straight victories in conference play, the longest such record in Southland Conference history. Also, McFatrich’s 59 total victories between the 2012-13 seasons stood only second to NCAA national champion Penn State for wins during that span.

Success in the classroom has also been prevalent in McFatrich’s time at Central Arkansas. From 2011-13, UCA volleyball earned a per-fect NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000. In that time, UCA has also placed a number of players on the Southland All-Academic team, including the 2012 Student-Athlete of the Year, which recog-nizes the top student-athlete both on and off the court.

McFatrich is the former Captain & Setter for the 1988 Athletes In Action International Volleyball Team. Touring throughout Latin America, he helped lead the team to a 23-2 record. He has three gold and two silver medals as a member of the Canada Masters Volleyball Team (2009-present), which competes in the U.S. Open each summer.
