GOING BEYOND THE ORDINARY TO EDUCATE 21 CENTURY LEADERS!ST
“Telling the truth and making someone cry is better than telling a lie and making someone smile.”
Paolo Coelho (Brazilian lyricist and novelist)
By Ponnie Wessels – Nkowa Private School
One of the challenges currently frustrating educators and parents to no end is the habitual dishonesty amongst our
children. Trust is shattered by just one act of dishonesty; integrity is questioned making it very difficult to believe
anything that person says or does. This ripple effect on family, friends and peers must be stopped by addressing
this issue urgently.
It is natural that children model adult behaviour; therefore it is imperative that if we want children to be honest
we have to be good examples of honesty. In this situation you do not want people to say, “The apple does not
fall far from the tree.”
Always begin and end a conversation with the importance of telling the truth. Look for warning signs and
ask relevant questions to ensure that the truth is being said.
When caught lying, remain calm but assertive. Explain your need to expect honesty, allow the sharing of
feelings, discuss the effects and provide ways for them to make amends.
Help children understand the importance of honesty and how it positively impacts their lives, results in stronger
relationships, higher self-worth, increased trust, opportunity, responsibility, freedom and peace of mind.
Reward honesty with praise, as this builds self-confidence and reinforces positive behaviour. Dishonesty must
be nipped in the bud and this type of behaviour must have consequences. Appropriate discipline must be
carried out and followed through, proving that telling lies is not a worthwhile choice.
By all means avoid taking lying as a joke or an amusement. It gives the wrong message to children and sets the
stage for future negative behaviours. Wrong is wrong and it must be taken seriously.
Choose honest friends who will be able to express their dissatisfaction with lying, cheating and stealing.
End relationships that do not encourage honesty. Honesty is a requirement for building long-lasting,
trustworthy relationships; beginning with that in mind will benefit children immensely.

Educators cannot address the issue of honesty on their own. Honesty is bred
at home while dishonesty can be used to manipulate and damage
relationships between educators and parents. Instilling honesty, integrity and
responsibility will set your children up for success at school and encourage
them to earn a positive reputation in the workplace.
Act now to avoid regret and disappointment!
