Sul davanti la cos detta fontana della Sirena,

ornato di tutti i fregi della gotica architettura,

al presente dai rottami di questedifizio sol cinta.

Caduto n il tetto, rovinate le mura,

e la sorgente che zampilla si apre il varco

fra le pietre, e le macerie postele intorno,

formando indi un ruscello. sullimbrunire. Sorge la luna.

Lucia ed Alisa

LUCIA (Viene dal castello, seguita da Alisa: sono entrambe nella massima agitazione. Ella si volge dintorno, come in cerca di qualcuno; ma osservando la fontana, ritorce altrove lo sguardo.)

1:9 Ancor non giunse!...

ALISA Incauta!... a che mi traggi!...

Avventurarti, or che il fratel qui venne,

LUCIA Ben parli! Edgardo sappia

1:8 introduction

A park. in the background one side of the castle with a little stage doorIn the foreground, the so called Siren fountain,

The other side of the fountain was once covered with a pretty edifice decorated with gothic friezes, .Only the debris of this edifice surrounds it. Ne tempi a cui rimonta questo avvenimento, fu in Iscozia comune credenza, che il violatore di un giuramento fatto con certe cerimonie, soggiacesse in questa terra ad unesemplare punizione celeste, quasi contemporanea allatto dello spergiuro. Perci allora i giuramenti degli amanti, lungi dal riguardarsi come cosa di lieve peso, avevano per lo meno limportanza di un contratto di nozze. La pi usitata di queste cerimonie era, che i due amanti rompevano, e si partivano una moneta. Si sostituito il cambio dellanello, come pi adatto alla scena. EDGARDO Listen to me and tremble

A ground floor room near Wolferag castle, next to a hall. A table, bare of all ornament and an large old chair form all the furnishings. At the back is a door that leads to the exterior. It is flanked by two windows which, having broken panes, allow one to glimpse most of the ruins of the aforementioned castle, and one side of the same leaning over the sea.

It is night. The place is feebly lit by a dim lamp The sky is horribly black; thunder, lightening and the howling wind mingle with the falling of rain.

Edgardo is seated near the table immersed in his melancholy thoughts, after a few moments he shakes himself and looking through the windows:

Il di lei sguardo impietrito, i moti convulsi, e fino un sorriso malaugurato manifestano non solo una spaventevole demenza, ma ben anco i segni di una vita, che gi volge al suo termine.)
