A visit to a longhouse is often the highlight of a trip to Sarawak, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the various tribes who have for generations lived in the remote interior of Borneo. While there are many areas in Sarawak where longhouses can be visited, Ulu Ai is one of the best. What makes Ulu Ai so special is the natural environment and stunning scenery. Clean rivers and jungle streams, refreshing waterfalls and undisturbed tracts of rainforest allow you to combine a range of outdoor activities with a longhouse visit.

Accommodation at Lubok Kasai Lodge

In response to the overwhelming success of Borneo Adventure’s lodge at Nanga Sumpa we have opened a new jungle lodge at nearby Lubok Kasai. Lubok Kasai is located a 30-45 minute longboat ride from Nanga Sumpa in what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas of Sarawak. Journey time from the Batang Ai Lake to Lubok Kasai is approximately 2 hours depending on the water level of the river.

This smaller lodge provides a more exclusive environment in a stunning riverside setting at the edge of the rainforest. Lubok Kasai was set up to appeal to people who want to expe-rience a totally natural and tranquil setting - away from the sights, sounds and activities of a vibrant longhouse.

If you want 5-star hotel-style accommodation, Lubok Kasai is probably not for you. However, if you don’t mind staying in a comfortable but basic jungle lodge and enjoy nature at its best, you will be rewarded with a unique experience of upriver Borneo.

Lubok Kasai Lodge is located on the banks of the Lalang River. It is essentially a replica, mini-longhouse with a ruai or verandah at the front, three bilik or rooms in the middle and a traditional kitchen located at the back. The rooms are unfurnished and are set up with mattresses, clean bedding and mosquito netting. Each room can accommodate up to four people.

The lodge comprises the main longhouse-style accommodation building, a separate dining hut and a toilet and shower block with western-style toilets and gravity-fed showers. The three wooden buildings are linked by an elevated plank walkway. At night traditional oil lamps are used to light the lodge and the plank walkway.

Meals are prepared in the lodge’s dining hut and usually feature chicken, beef, fish, fresh jungle vegetables, fruit and other local delicacies. Meals are normally served in the dining hut, which overlooks the river. However, if requested meals can be served Iban-style on the ruai of the main lodge building.

Activities & Excursions

The lodge is surrounding by rainforest in an area that is inhabited by a thriving population of wild orangutans. Staying at Lubok Kasai offers the chance to explore the numerous jungle trails; spot local wildlife; and enjoy the clear cooling waters of the adjacent Lalang River. The Enseluai waterfall is just a short boat ride away; and of course your Iban hosts are always on hand; cooking traditional food and ready to provide every assistance when required. Trips to Jambu and Nanga Sumpa Longhouses can also be arranged, as can fishing trips further upriver.

Lubok Kasai is ideal if you want a more relaxed itinerary; or indeed a tailor-made programme suited entirely to your needs: whether it be trekking in search for orangutan or other wildlife; taking a boat ride further upriver to have a picnic on pebble beach; simply chilling out by the river; or treating yourself to periods of quiet solitude, insulated from the outside world.
