CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow through “and became man”) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Tomorrow (Monday, February 3rd) marks the beginning of our annual Lourdes Novena for Healing. As you know, this is a special time of prayer and reflection as we invoke the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes for all kinds of healing –

physical, spiritual, psychological or the healing

of broken relationships. On each of the weekdays the novena service will begin at 5:15 p.m. and on the weekends the service will be held at 4:00 p.m. The services will last 45 minutes. You should have received blank intention cards in the mail last week. Additional intention cards may be found at the doors to the church. Please write out your intentions and place them in the

basket located in the sanctuary. As in the past, I will read a few of them out loud each evening. This year we have been able to increase the number of nights that the Spokane Symphony brass and string musicians will be present. Your financial generosity makes this possible. Novena donation envelopes may be found in the pews or you may donate online by logging on to our website www.SpokaneCathedral.com and clicking on the blue icon pictured here: Our website also contains a detailed description of each of the novena services. You will notice that we have added a night dedicated to St. Peregrine who is the patron saint of cancer patients. We have also invited the Director of the Office of Spiritual Healing for the diocese who will speak to us about the power of sacramentals such as blessed salt to repel the presence of evil in our lives. Please check your calendars and plan on

attending this important time of healing and grace.

Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ. Father Darrin Connall Rector

CANTOR/ACCOMPANIST WORKSHOP St. Patrick Parish, 415 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362

Saturday, March 7, 2020, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Cantors and organists/pianists from the Diocese of Spokane are invited to a workshop to learn techniques to more effectively communicate the Word of God and lead sung prayer as a cantor or organist/pianist. The first hour will be a presentation on the role of the cantor/keyboardist and in the second hour participants are encouraged to play or sing and receive feedback. Everyone is encouraged to come with a responsorial psalm on antiphonal communion song. For those who do not have an accompanist or a cantor, you will either be paired with another participant or one will provided for you. The workshop will be led by Henry Bauer, Director of Music at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes and Heather Fuller-Johnson, Director of Music at St. Augustine and Cantor at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Cost is $15 per person. Payments in cash/check will be accepted at the door. To register email [email protected]. For more information contact Henry Bauer at [email protected] or Jo Anna Gogl at [email protected].

First Friday

This coming Friday, February 7th, is First Friday and a day to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In an appearance to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, Our Lord promised that whoever receives Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays will receive specific blessings. Among these blessings are the gift of final perseverance and the promise to receive the last sacraments before death. Plan on joining your fellow parishioners this Friday at Noon Mass. Please note: due to a lack of available people

to be in the church, adoration will be for one hour only (from 12:30 pm to 1:30

pm) with benediction at 1:30 pm.

Scriptural Reflection February 2, 2020

MAL 3:1-4; PS 24:7-10; HEB 2:14-18; LK 2:22-40 or LK 2:22-32

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when Mary and Joseph brought their infant Son to the Temple in obedience to the laws of their Jewish faith. This is a beautiful, and in many ways, mysterious feast — and one that is filled with lessons for a stewardship way of life. Our Gospel passage from Luke, recounting the details of the Presentation, teaches us a stewardship lesson through the example of St. Joseph and the Blessed Mother, the “Holy Parents.” Even knowing their Son was God, they still carefully observed the faith practices of their day bringing him to the temple “to present Him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord.” Later in the passage we read that, “When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to their own town of Nazareth.” The Holy Parents were good stewards of their child, teaching Him to live in obedience to the practices of their faith from His infancy and throughout His “growing up” years. Those of us entrusted with the care of children — whether our own children, godchildren, nieces, and nephews, grandchildren, or students — have a vital role to play in the faith formation of these young ones. We, like the Holy Parents, must steward these children well, forming them in the faith by both instruction and example throughout their lives. What a privilege and high calling we have as Christian stewards. Let us take these stewardship lessons to heart and present our gifts and our young ones joyfully to the Lord.

Ceiling Collapse

The plastic roof membrane over the sacristy has failed (likely due to an ice dam) and has allowed water to seep inside. This has resulted in a ceiling collapse. The maintenance staff has installed some temporary barrier while we examine the extent of the damage. It is unclear at this point whether this will be an insurance claim or part of the maintenance budget. In either case, these kinds of repairs are only made possible through your financial generosity to our parish. Thank you!
