A time for hope

St Peter’s and benefice web site- www.edgehillchurches.org

Christmas will be different this

year; many of us will be seeing few-

er people on Christmas day and

there won’t be the mad dash

around the country to catch up

with a lot of our relatives. There

won’t be the many gatherings and

parties in the run up to it, which

may result in a mountain of surplus

mince pies in the New Year!

Church will be different too; we

can’t gather to sing carols in the

way we normally would, we can’t

do our Crib and Christingle ser-

vices, and those services that we

can do will need to observe the

correct social distancing, which will

limit capacity in some of our

church buildings.

For many people this will be a

first Christmas without someone they’ve loved who has died

in this last year. Some people will have friends or relatives

who are poorly at home or in hospital, and others, even if

well, may have to self-isolate over Christmas.

2020 is a year that I am sure most of us will be glad to see

the back of, but we are not out of the woods yet. The start of

2021 looks like it holds more of the same challenges as this

year… but there is hope. There is hope that, as vaccines are

approved and rolled out over the course of the year, we will

be able to return to life in the way that we used to know it.

We will not be able to spend Christmas in the way we would

like this year, and I am sure that echoes the feelings of Mary

and Joseph on that very first Christmas.

I’m sure that Mary did not enjoy the scandal of being an un-

married teenage mum. I’m sure Joseph hadn’t expected to

become a father to a child that wasn’t his. I am certain that

neither of them wanted to embark on the long journey to

Bethlehem when Mary was heavily pregnant. I can only imag-

ine how Mary must have felt when her baby came, far from

home and the people that may have supported her. How des-

perate they must have felt when there was only a manger for

his crib and how frightened a short time later when they had

to flee the country when Herod sent his soldiers to find and

kill their baby.

They weren’t able to spend that first Christmas in the way

they wanted, but in the midst of it, there were some amazing

memories. Memories that Mary ‘treasured’ and ‘pondered in

her heart’ (Luke 2:19). In the midst of the challenges they

faced, Jesus was born. God emptying himself of all but love and

Merry Christmas!

coming to live as one of us. The angels

celebrated, the shepherds were in awe,

the wise men worshipped, the prophets

spoke, and the rulers trembled. The

world has never been the same since.

Although he was born in poverty, he

was born to bring light and hope to the

world.

This child would grow to be a man who

would confound the religious teachers,

speak out against oppressors, side with

the poor and the marginalised, teach and

lead for a few short years and then die a

brutal death in a tiny outpost of the

Roman empire.

And yet… the movement that he start-

ed has changed the world in which we

live. So much so, that about 500 years

after his death they reset the calendar

to start on the year of his birth. Over

the centuries, his followers founded the first orphanages, the

first hospitals, the first universities and so much more. What

started in poverty and seemed to end in tragedy went on to

be a light in the world that continues to shine brightly in the

darkness.

This Christmas may not be all that we are used to, or all that

we had hoped for, in the same way that it wasn’t for Mary and

Joseph, but there are ways that we can still make some amaz-

ing memories. Rather than trying to do a pale reflection of

what we might normally do, we are changing some of our

Christmas services and events so that we can make some new

and precious memories for this Christmas.

So, look out in your village, or neighbouring ones, for special

services, events and activities to mark this time of year. Ser-

vices, events and activities to remind us of the hope we have,

not just in vaccines and better treatments, but the hope for

the whole world. A light that shines in the darkness, and the

darkness did not (and will not) overcome it (John 1:5)

SERVICES IN THE EDGEHILL CHURCHES We are hoping that our churches will be open

for services again in December! In order to make it as safe as possible for everyone, there are of course

some things we all need to do as we gather together:

• If you have any signs of Coronavirus infection, please do not come… but please let us know so that we can pray for you

• If you are over 70 and therefore classed as more vulnerable,

you are advised to think carefully before attending, but

please be aware that the precautions we are taking mean

that church is one of the safer places that you can go.

• If you are still shielding, then we understand if you still wish

to stay away.

• It is now mandatory to wear a face covering in places of worship, so please bring a mask with you.

MIDWEEK COMMUNION SERVICE Thursday 3rd December at 9.30am on ZOOM video conferencing Contact edge-

[email protected] for a link to the service

Like so many things, our Crib Service is going to be dif-

ferent this year. We want to share the amazing and ex-

citing story of the birth of Jesus with the whole of Kinet-

on by inviting every household to our D.I.Y. Crib Service.

Scenes from the nativity story will be hidden

around the village with the final scene at St Pe-

ter’s Church. Everyone will be able to download a

map & quiz to help them complete the quest.

At the church there will be a QR code to scan. This will take

people to a specially created website with activities, quiz an-

swers & a nativity film that can be explored online at home.

You can get involved in creating the event by making an angel

to be part of our ‘Heavenly Host’ of angels in the church. You

can make your angel any size and from any material, as long it

is possible to hang it safely from some 1mm clear fishing line.

You can make as many as you like and they can be highly deco-

rated or plain and simple.

You can place your angel in the box at the back of church any-

time from now right up until 18th December.

More details about the DIY service will be available on social

media and the church web pages soon

Thursday 24th December

CHRISTMAS SERVICES We can’t do many of the services and

events that we would usually do at this time

of year but there are some very innovative

ideas that our villages are developing to help

us make this Christmas special.

Please keep your eye out for ways to be involved in the Kineton

and Combroke village physical and virtual notice boards/forums.

See Events on page 11 to find out

how ‘Carols in the Market Square’

is adapting this Christmas.

A Teatime

chat with Shannon Wardell Oaks Holt, Banbury Road, Kineton

Born December 15th 1992, Banbury.

Occupation/s: When I was a teenager my ambi-

tion was to own a dance school. I’d had dancing

lessons in Banbury for many years and took A lev-

els in Dance, PE, Sociology and Health and Social

Care with this ambition in mind. However, when I

was 17 and interviewing for dance school places in

London, I had an accident. I was in a dance produc-

tion in Oxford when I bent over backwards and

got stuck. It turned out I’d knocked two vertebrae

out. I recovered, after many months, but never got

my full flexibility back. That put paid to my dreams

of performing professionally and, while I could still

have been a dance teacher, the experience made

me fall out of love with dancing. So, when I left

school, I went to work in a bank. It was around

this time that I got my first dog. It took a lot of persuading for

mum and dad to let me have one, but in the end, I got Hunter,

a standard poodle. I worked hard at training him, going to clas-

ses and reading a lot about dog training. I even started to train

him to be an assistance dog for my dad who had various disa-

bilities. Not long after, I was given the loan of a pony in Tysoe

and used to love doing gymnastics on his back. Then I got my

second dog Indi, a black Labrador, and started to train her as

an assistance dog too. It was then I realised I would much ra-

ther be outdoors with dogs than working in a bank. So, in

2013, I gave up my job and went to do a degree in Animal

Management at Moreton Morrell. While I was there, I had part

-time jobs with Dogs Trust in Kenilworth and did work expe-

rience with Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs. I also built up my

own business dog-walking and training, which I went into full

time when I graduated in 2015.

What brought you to Kineton and when?

I left home when I started at Moreton Morrell and rented vari-

ous places in nearby villages. Because I built up my business

while I was doing my degree, my clients were all in this area

so, when I came to buy my first home, it needed to be close by

and I settled on Bishops Itchington. It was when I was living

there, in summer 2018, that I met Tim. He was a builder and

owned a house in Moreton Morrell which was being rented by

one of my clients. While we were on holiday in summer 2019,

we talked about where we would live if we bought a house

together. Tim lived in Leamington and liked town life, whereas

I wanted to be in the countryside. In the end, Kineton was the

only place we could agree on! Tim had lived in Kineton years

ago and liked the village and it was well positioned for my busi-

ness. Not long after that, I saw that our house was for sale. It

was a bit more than we could afford but we put in an offer

and, I think because we were local and keen to keep the allot-

ments, the family who were selling accepted. We moved in in

December 2019.

What are you best known for in the village?

Well, probably for buying the house that owns the land the

allotments are on. But also now, I hope, for my dog training

and walking business Pampered Paws. During the Coronavirus

pandemic we saw the potential of running training classes from

our house, using a small area of the garden. We are really keen

on sustainability and, as well as shopping locally and using local

services, we want to be able to grow our own produce. Fortu-

nately, when we moved in, one of the allotments came free, so

we’ve put that plan into action already! It’s quite a responsibil-

ity looking after such a big plot but, being a builder, Tim can

turn his hand to whatever needs doing. We know how im-

portant the allotments are to Kineton. We are still renting

them out at £10 a year and have a waiting list, which is great

because we feel it’s important that people want to and can

grow their own food. Before we moved here, I used to run my

dog training classes on recreation grounds and in parks, but

now I can run them from home which is great as I have much

more control and can be very thorough with all the sanitising

procedures we now need. I run four regular classes with a

maximum of five dogs in each class, alongside private one to

one training sessions at clients houses for more specialised

behaviours. It’s an ongoing process with most dogs on courses

that can last for several months. Lockdown has actually boost-

ed interest because more people seem to have decided to get

dogs as a result of it. On top of that, because puppies had to

be picked up from breeders earlier than they should have been

before lockdown, many have behavioural problems, such as

separation distress due to owners going back to work.

What do you like most about Kineton?

We love the feel of it. It’s so quirky, vintage and characterful

and so self-contained. We can get just about everything we

need within walking distance yet live in beautiful countryside.

If you could do one thing to improve the village what

would it be?

I’d make sure everyone with a dog clears up after them. It’s so

frustrating that there are people in the village who still do not

pick up after their dogs. I give away free poo bag holders to

encourage people not to be so anti-social. I’d also like to see a

really good park for children.

What is your philosophy on life in one sentence?

Always try to see the positive side.

How or for what would you like to be remembered?

I’d love to be remembered as a kind, passionate, happy person.

walking her number is 07801 297568.

Local dance teach-

er Charlie Gunter

and her long term

partner Craig By-

field didn’t quite

have the wedding they’d been plan-

ning on October

31st but, despite all

the Covid re-

strictions and im-

pending lockdown,

they had a very

memorable day…

in more ways than one.

After taking their vows in St Peter’s Church, the couple, who

live in Shortacres, raced down to the Sports and Social Club

so that Charlie could lead the sponsored Jerusalema dance

challenge.

Charlie, who runs Carmina Academy and recently opened a

hair salon at MOD Kineton, and Craig, who is building up his

new car detailing company, have been together many years

and have two children Alfie and Story. Alfie, who was at Kinet-

on High School until he left to study dance in Birmingham, and

Story, who is at Kineton Primary School, joined mum and dad

in the dash from the church to also take part in the challenge,

which was joined by about 70 people.

Charlie said they’d had a tricky few months leading up to

their wedding because they’d had to cancel so many of their

plans but in the end it was a brilliant day.

Charlie and Craig asked their guests to sponsor the dance

challenge rather than give wedding presents, which helped

boost the total raised so far by the event to £360.

The money will be split between Kineton Primary School and

Ibba Girls School in South Sudan.

You can see a pretty awesome video of the dance challenge

(not many of which will have been led by a bride and groom

with their entourage!) at https://youtu.be/4O_puzFZzV4 and, if

Gilks’ Garage Café marked its first birthday

on November 14th with one of its signature

dishes….an enormous chocolate cake!

There may have been lashings of rain out-

side but inside there were lots of sunny

smiles as the staff celebrated an amazing

first year.

It has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride

for the Gilks family since they opened the

doors of their garage -themed café on an

equally rainy day in 2019.

On that day, the customers poured in,

and continued to pour in until lockdown hit

in March. Since then, the ever-resourceful

café team have come up with all sorts of

ideas to be able to keep on serving their

customers– creating outdoor seating, intro-

ducing special Covid-safe systems for takea-

ways and

offering free

deliveries in

the village.

In the brief summer window

when restrictions were relaxed,

they even managed to host a

craft fair, which raised hundreds

of pounds for the Shakespeare

Hospice and they’re hoping to

raise even more funds for the

hospice with a Christmas fair,

jointly organised with Dan Beck-

ett of neighbouring Pinnock Distillery, in the café grounds on

Saturday December 5th from 10am to 3pm.

Katherine Gilks commented: “All the team would like to thank

everyone who has supported us through what has been a won-

derful, but rather challenging, first year. We are extremely

hopeful that our popularity amongst villagers, visitors, cyclists,

bikers and motorists, will bode well for our second year when,

fingers crossed, we will eventually be able to get back to nor-

mal.”

So many villagers have risen to Kineton’s

Christmas Tree Trail challenge, it looks like

there will be even more trees this year

than last!

Organiser Gill Hawtin from Flower

Thyme is delighted at the response as it

was only a few weeks ago that she feared

the latest Coronavirus lockdown could put

paid to the event.

“There was a moment when I wondered

if we would be able to make it happen but

there was such a lot of enthusiasm I felt we

just had to persevere.”

And that perseverance has paid off, with

almost 300 trees expected in the trail,

which will launch on Saturday Decem-

ber 5th and run until the end of the month.

“We won’t be able to have a grand

‘switching on’ ceremony like we did last

year, but the important thing is we will

have the trail and I hope it will provide

hours of fun and entertainment for hun-

dreds, if not thousands, of adults and chil-

dren.

“The theme this year is Heroes and Her-

oines, so it should be a lot of fun guessing

the focus of each tree and there’ll be a

chance to vote for your favourite entry,

with a prize for the winner,” said Gill.

Trail maps, priced £2.50, will be available

to buy in village shops and online at

www.kinetonchristmastreetrail.co.uk with

proceeds going to local charities.

Also Kineton Primary School will be

providing parking and selling trail maps,

along with mulled wine and mince pies,

from 2-6pm on the Saturdays before

Christmas.

Gill added: “I would like to say a big thank

you to everyone who has once again taken

part and put such a lot of hard work into

creating a spectacular trail.”

Before and after….. Above are nine-year-old Harry Horton (left) and Warren

Nicholl before they Braved the Shave in aid of Macmillan

Cancer Support at Kineton Sports and Social Club on

November 1st.

Harry challenged dad Michael that if he managed to raise

more than £500 dad would do it too!! He raised that in 48

hours and duly dad joined in, with their sterling efforts raising

£1,118 for Macmillan.

The three are pictured above, after the head shave, with Mi-

chael on the left, Harry (clutching his shaven locks) who took

part in the sponsored event in memory of his friend Sam’s

grandad, and Warren, who wanted to raise funds in memory of

his dad Bob who died in 2013.

The closure of Warwick Road should end this month

(December) several weeks earlier than the original January

22nd end date.

The closure was needed because of ground works for the

housing development opposite Brookhampton Lane.

There was uproar at the original timing for the closure, which

was set to last almost three months from the beginning of

November.

Meetings between representatives of the county, district and

parish councils however has resulted in a speeding up of the

works and the promise that the road will be open before

Christmas.

Kineton shop owners were dismayed at the closure, fearing it

would cause yet more damage to their trade, especially before

Christmas, when so many are already struggling because of the

Coronavirus restrictions. The earlier date for opening won’t

help them much in that respect, but it will be a relief for any-

one who regularly travels that route as the Lighthorne Road is

a narrow and dangerous alternative, unsuitable for buses and

large vehicles or large volumes of traffic.

Road to open sooner

Developers insisted that the nature of the work they needed to

undertake meant there was no way of avoiding the closure of War-

wick Road, but they have agreed to speed it up.

Kineton Parish Council is considering a review of the two chil-

dren’s play areas in the village.

This might look at the type of equipment provided at each of

the locations for which the parish council now has responsibil-

ity.

Consideration will need to include the changing age profile of

children and young people in the village, the incredible changes

in play equipment now available to purchase and the grant

funding which might be available.

As this review progresses, the parish council will consult with

and seek the opinions of users.
