The Pearl of the Southern Coast of Finland
Loviisa, an idyllic old port town between Porvoo and Kotka, is less than an hour’s drive east of Helsinki. The Swedish King Adolf Fredrik was very fond of the town and named it after his wife, Queen Lovisa Ulrika.
The coastal town of Loviisa has a rich history. The bilingual town has a remarkable main square surrounded by 19th century stately stone houses and immediately next to the centre, you will find the old town districts with their wooden houses, as well as gravel and cobblestone streets. On the western side, you will find the bold neo-gothic Church, while fortresses built in the 18th century are on the eastern side. The sea stretches all the way to the town centre. The Laivasilta area is related to the sailing history of the region and is characterised by its red salt warehouses, making it a popular area for meetings and events during summers.
Loviisa has nearly 16,000 inhabitants and it offers a wide range of cultural sites, rich natural beauty and plenty of activities. Only a short distance from the Loviisa town centre, you can admire manors and craftsmen’s workshops in the area of the Strömfors Iron Works. You can also learn about the interesting past of the area through the historical buildings and fortresses. The pristine natural environment offers the opportunity for swimming, picnicking, hiking and fishing, as well as playing golf. The summer 2012 special exhibition presents maritime history and environmental actions as seen from the point of view of the John Nurminen Foundation. The cultural functions of the foundation are focused on the history of shipping, exploration and cartography. The foundation wields collections of maritime art, maritime antiques and antique maps and charts. The John Nurminen Foundation has, by means of the Clean Baltic Sea project, worked for a cleaner Baltic Sea since 2004. The exhibition is in fact linked with the current day by presenting the actions of the Foundation as a protector of the Baltic Sea. At the museum shop there are also objects for sale, whereof part of the profit is allocated for the benefit of the Baltic Sea.
A museum in touch with time
In 1745 the town was granted licence to export and import goods. Laivasilta had 50 salt warehouses loaded with imported goods, such as salt, tobacco, spices etc.

The sea dominates life in Loviisa during the four seasons of the year. This is why this beautiful town with its restaurants and events attracts visitors from both near and far. The wooden salt warehouses, which have been turned into restaurants or spaces that host art exhibitions and events, give Laivasilta its historical atmosphere. The restaurants are open from May 1st until the end of September and there are weekly special events.
The sea has affected the history and trade of this port town, as well as the income of its citizens. The Maritime Museum located at Laivasilta presents the rich sailing history of the region.
The guest harbour has 55 berths, water, electricity, a fuel station,a recycling point, a septic tank exhauster, post box and an internet connection. It is possible to go to the sauna, take a shower, do laundry and dry up the laundry in the new service building. The Loviisa guest harbour is known for its authentic and romantic atmosphere. The splendid Österstjernan packet yacht has been the highlight of Loviisa Laivasilta since 2006. Österstjernan is a replica of a sailing ship, which sailed between Loviisa and Stockholm in the 19th century. The original Österstjernan was built in Pietarsaari between 1813 and 1814. The current Österstjernan is based on the original ship documents and on a painting dating back to the 1820s. During summer of 2012 locals and tourists have the opportunity to sail aboard the Österstjernan on June 30th, July 21st and Aug. 25th. Departure at 9 a.m. from Laivasilta and return at 1 p.m.

and Clean Natural LakesThe glittering water of the Bay of Loviisa invites you out to sea. The deep, dark lakes and beautiful river landscapes and rills of Loviisa also attract visitors. You can set out by yacht, motorboat or a plain rowing boat.
Along the waters of Lovisa, you will find dozens of fantastic recreational sites that tempt you to go ashore; there are sandy beaches, camping areas and campfire sites. For instance, on the islands Lilla rövarn, Hautasaari, ruutikellarisaari, Kråkholmen and dunkahäll, there are no holiday houses at all.
You can also enjoy excursions and sandy beaches at the shore areas of Källa and Lekarberget-Palikberget-Stennäsudden. An interesting site to visit is also Harudd, which is surrounded by nature reserves.
The small and sensitive lakes and ponds of Loviisa are protected so that only boats equipped with oars or battery-operated engines are allowed. When going by boat out to sea, you must take into consideration the protected nesting areas of birds.
The shores of Loviisa attract fishermen. Companies specialized in guided fishing trips operate in the area and they customize their trips according to the visitors’ needs (see page 34). Other group activities, meals and sauna can be combined with the fishing trips. The area also offers luxurious accommodations to top off your fishing trip.

The fortress of Svartholma is situated at the opening of the Bay of Loviisa approximately 10 km from the town centre. During summer you can visit the island by waterbus, which departs from Laivasilta. The island offers a summer café and the piers have berths for 70 guest boats (at no charge).
ADVENTURES FOR CHILDREN AT SVARTHOLMA! The lost archives of svartholmaThe king of sweden ordered augustin ehrensvärd to design the sea fortress of svartholma to protect his kingdom against russia. The fortress was nowhere near finished when the king arrived to inspect the construction. During this exciting adventure, you prepare to receive the king and discover the secrets of svartholma. The adventure is for children. Please come dressed in comfortable shoes and outdoor clothing. Bring along a torch as well.

A Leisure Trip to the HistoricalSea Fortress of Svartholma
The sea fortress of Svartholma, located at the entrance to Bay of Loviisa, is a sister fortress to Suomenlinna in Helsinki. They belong to the same defence chain of fortresses. The construction of Svartholma started in 1748 according to plans made by Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd. Most of the work was carried out in the 1750s.
The Swedish command ended in 1808 when Svartholma surrendered almost without resistance to Russia. During the Crimean War in 1855 an English squadron blew the fortress to oblivion and it was left as it was. Starting in the 1960s, it has been restored under the supervision of the National Board of Antiquities.
Svartholma is a popular recreational destination for families. Visitors can visit Svartholma by waterbus, which operates during regular hours. Guided walking tours are some of the activities available on the island. In the exciting childrens’ adventure, you can search for the lost archives of Svartholma. Free berths, exhauster for septic tanks, waste and water points, as well as campfire sites are available for guests.
During the Svartholma sea fortress adventure, you prepare for the visit of the King and learn some of the secrets of the island.
EHRENSVÄRD’S TRAIL Beautiful and historically interesting Ehrensvärd’s trail starts from the fortresses Rosen and Ungern. The fascinating nature trail, approximately two kilometres long, offers a unique chance to find out about the early stages of fortress building, from stone hammering to the 18th century fortress. In addition to the interesting construction history, visitors can admire the rich local flora and birdlife along the walk. Ehrensvärd’s trail is well marked. The starting points are the Sports Pavilion (Urheilutie) and Bastion Ungern (Ungernintie).

Bastion UngernWhen heading for Loviisa centre from the east, the first sites you will encounter are the grand Ungern and rosen fortresses. They were built in the 1750s to protect the town. The renovated Ungern is a popular venue for concerts, events and plays.
Loviisa also offers other interesting fortifications and buildings built during the fortress era, for instance the Commandant’s House built in 1755. Nowadays the Loviisa Town Museum is located in the Commandant’s House.
In Ahvenkoski there are redoubts dating back to the 1700s. These fortifications were built during the Swedish era to protect the border check point at the Kymijoki River next to the King’s Road. Kymijoki River was the border of Sweden and Russia 1743-1808. The first shots of the Finnish War 1808–1809 were fired on February 21st in 1808, when the Russian soldiers crossed the border in Ahvenkoski. A rare arch bridge, Savukoski Bridge, is also located in Ahvenkoski.

A CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET Visitors can not miss the bold neo-gothic church in Loviisa, since the impressive building is located at the western gateway of the city centre. The Loviisa church was built in 1863–1865. The Loviisa church has served as a road church for many years and it is proud to be known as the “mother of road churches”. The church was renovated both on the inside and on the outside in 2011. Among other things two priceless glass paintings were restored. Historic Buildings and Neo-Gothic Boldness
The surroundings of Loviisa Square are architecturally unique. Instead of supermarkets, it is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings.
Loviisa is known for its peaceful small town character. On the square, you can experience the relaxing atmosphere that also continues in the charming and historical lower part of the town. Loviisa is a fascinating destination for architecture lovers. The central square is surrounded by 19th century stone buildings: the historic Town Hall, the Post office, the Pharmacy Building, the Sparbank and the district Court House, all valuable conservation sites. The Loviisa Town Hall reminds one of the contemporary House of Nobility in Helsinki, both designed by architect Georg Chiewitz.
We can be grateful to architect Georg Chiewitz for the 1900th century view. Thanks to Elmar Badermann, the German born city architect of Loviisa, the Old Town and the historical lower district were kept almost intact. He was a strong-headed man, who saved the town from most planning mistakes in the wild 1970s.
Several Neo-Romantic buildings, such as the Swedish upper secondary school “Lovisa Gymnasium” by Magnus Schjerfbeck represent more modern architecture. The Bus Station, which represents later functionalism, is also a true pearl.
CEMETERIESamong others, the writer runar schildt and relatives of Jean sibelius have been buried at the old evangelical lutheran cemetery. The new cemetery opened during the Finnish Winter War in 1939–1940. The orthodox cemetery includes a small chapel, a chasovnya. The cemeteries are situated close to each other, on both sides of Myllyharju ridge.

at a Commandant’s HomeIn Loviisa, you can admire interesting architecture while walking around town. The impressive Bonga Castle, which was built during the Russian era, is situated near the church. Bonga castle is now the atelier of the artist and professor Riitta Nelimarkka.
From the corner of the square, continue towards the current library, the former society house. The club house, which was designed by architect G. Th. Chiewitz in the 1860s, was renovated to house the library in the 1990s. During the restoration works, the original ceiling frescoes were revealed.
The best way to get to know the exquisite architecture of Loviisa is to walk around town by yourself. You can buy the guide, ”Walking Tour in Loviisa”, from the tourist office. This guide includes the main attractions and routes.
Loviisa offers several interesting museums. Do not miss the Forge Museum at the Strömfors Iron Works area. It represents one of the first museums in Finland on industrial tradition.
Arts in a Castle and a Museum
The Lower District of Loviisa is a popular tourist site. Old buildings have been renovated with an eye to respecting local traditions.

CRANE PARKThe famous park architect Paul olsson designed crane Park as an extension to the esplanad Park as early as 1917. The plan was realized in the 1930-40s. currently, crane Park is home to the biggest poplar trees in Finland. The park with a water theme is surrounded by fine lindens. The fountain statue of crane Park was made by sculptor Jussi Mäntynen.
Old Wooden Houses,
The Old Town, a wood house area adjacent to the town centre, is a marvellous entity of its own. There you will find a 17th century building belonging to Degerby Estate. Today the building is home to restaurant Degerby Gille. Also the historical Lower District and the Garnison are idyllic wooden house areas where you can admire the craftsmanship of old masters. All houses have their own interesting history.
Considering its size Loviisa has plenty of green parks with historical interest. Kappelinpuisto Park is one of the largest and the esplanad Park divides the centre of Loviisa longitudinally. The Crane Park is located opposite to the Bus Station and the Garnison Fortress Park is located nearby.
The Commandant’s Garden in front of the Town Museum displays typical decorative and useful plants from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Tamminiemi Holiday resort and Camping area is located in a park by the sea and from the panorama view point Kukkukivi the sea stretches as far as the eye can see. ehrensvärd’s Trail will take you through stunningly beautiful woods (further information page 10).

Private homes in historical, more than one hundred year old, houses in Loviisa welcome you already for the eighth time for a visit on August 25th–26th 2012 during the Historical Houses of Loviisa event.
The Historical Houses of Loviisa also offers visitors charming gardens, interesting yards, antiques and collectibles, flea markets and innumerable private yard sales. The event has in fact become the largest public event in eastern Uusimaa – last year the number of visitors was estimated at 14,000. This year the cultural theme is the manors of the region.
The national event on traditional building and renovation also comprises various work exhibitions related to traditional renovation of old houses. A meeting place for producers and choice artisans, the popular Producer Market, which concentrates on locally produced and organic foods, also continues to expand.
During the open Gardens in Loviisa event, private gardens open their gates to visitors. Along the route, there are many different gardens: a romantic rose garden, a lush produce garden, a town garden with cobblestones, a classic topiary garden, and a still pond with wetland plants. Ask for advice, exchange your views with others and bask in the beauty.

The Unique Setting of the Strömfors Iron Works
The governor of Uusimaa and Turku province, Johan Creutz, founded the iron works in the westernmost junction of the Kymijoki River in 1698. Strömfors Iron Works got its name in 1744, when Jacob Forsell and Anders Nohrström acquired the iron works.
In 1790, the iron works got a new manager, the 31-year-old Virginia af Forselles, who managed Strömfors Iron Works for almost 60 years. A large part of the well-kept environment and buildings currently on display at the iron works are from this period.
The Strömfors Iron Works district is characterised by handicrafts. Life in the centuries-old environment is indicative of the traditions of the region. The craftsmen work all year at the iron works and during summer small shops, museums, workshops and the summer café open their doors.
The iron works district offers a relaxing holiday site all year long in a historical environment. The area is home to first-class holiday apartments and the unique hostel Krouvinmäki built of clay. The restaurant Ruukinmylly offers delicious meals during summer as well as winter.
THe KUKULJÄrVI HIKInG TraIL The Kukuljärvi hiking trail is situated in the majestic forest area between Ahvenkoski and Ruotsinpyhtää centre. The eight kilometre long trail next to the sports centre in the Ruotsinpyhtää centre from the shore of Kymijoki River; from there, it winds upwards towards the high rock landscapes. At times, you can glimpse the sea from afar, until you come down to Kukuljärvi pristine natural environment. The wondrous forests and marshlands bring variation to the scenery.At Kukuljärvi, you can swim and grill sausages at the recreation sites.

GIANT’S KETTLES OF HOPOMyou can peek inside a giant’s kettle on the eastern shore of lake hopjärvi (hopom). The natural splendor of this site allows the visitor to take the time for quiet reflection.

The stunning natural beauty and varied nature of Loviisa offers great opportunities for outdoor activities throughout the year. The tracks wind through myriad landscapes and visitors can easily choose the right walking, skiing, hiking or running track for them.
The hiking trail “Kalle’s track” starts from Liljendal’s running track. The track leads through varied landscapes: swamps, high rocks and easier road sections. In the middle of the track, the beautiful spring lake Tenan appears; in the cabin by a lookout point, you can relax and grill some sausage. You can also choose shortcuts and come close to the cabin and Tenan Lake by car as well. During winter, you can ski along Kalle’s Track.
There are plenty of swimming sites in Loviisa. Plagen Beach is situated near the town centre, close to a nature reserve and next to the tennis courts. Other good swimming places can be found at Lill- Bästö, close to Pernaja church and at the well-equipped recreational centre Rönnäs.
Located on the border of Lapinjärvi and Loviisa, wilderness Lake Tenan is dark and cold, but the biggest lake of the area is Lake Hopjärvi (Hopom). It is graced with splendid flat rocks. In Ruotsinpyhtää, there is a popular clear-watered lake called Särkjärvi.

Golfing by the seaThe Rönnäs seaside offers a great variety of leisure activities all year long. In addition to golf in Rönnäs, you can play tennis or join guided boat tours, canoeing and fishing. Amazing NatureThe village of Isnäs, located at the mouth of Bay of Pernaja, is well-known for its old industrial milieu. Along the old village road you’ll find houses where the workmen of the sawmill used to live. The houses originate from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The Isnäs Steam Engine Museum and Kaarnaranta Bed & Breakfast are situated on the site of the old sawmill. Nearby you also find the organic farms of Wildemans and Labby Manor.
It is not far from rönnäs village, where there is a golf course as well as the Archipelago Museum.
The trip continues along the winding archipelago roads to Kabböle, the southernmost point of mainland Loviisa. From here, it is less than a hundred kilometres to the Estonian coast. As it is situated on a busy boat route, Kabböle offers good services and during summer it is an excellent meeting point. The fascinating m/s J.L. Runeberg stops here and offers you the chance to take a mini cruise lasting just a few hours to Loviisa.
Idyllic Sarvisalo is the biggest island in Loviisa. You can tour the island by car and admire the idyllic archipelago landscapes. Sarvisalo hosts a small cemetery, a chapel, a shop and B&B accommodations.
The beautiful archipelago of Pernaja is a popular cottage area, and summer markets are held in both Sarvisalo and Kabböle.

The juices, jams and jellies at the Malmgård shop are made from produce of the own garden. At the manor shop it is also possible to buy beers from the Malmgård brewery.
Manor LifeLoviisa boasts several historical manors, of which Malmgård Manor and Labby Manor are open for visitors.
The master of Malmgård Manor, Count Johan Creutz, has harnessed his estate for organic farming. Upon booking, the visitor can tour the castle, enjoy the ecologic scenery, enjoy coffee or lunch, as well as buy organic produce. In addition to brewing beer, beer tastings are arranged at the brewery. At the new manor shop you can find organic produce from the own estate, as well as from other producers of organic produce in eastern Uusimaa. During summers there is a local foods market in connection with the shop.
Historical Labby Manor is located in the vicinity of Isnäs village. Around the manor spreads 130 hectares of fields, pastures, forests and yards. The main building of the manor, built in the 18th century, was moved to its current place from Suomenlinna fortress in 1865. Labby is renowned for its organic and biodynamic farming. The manor park is currently undergoing restoration into its original form. There are a multitude of woody stemmed plants and old perennials in the small tree species park. Tours are arranged for groups interested in the park of the manor and in farming. The visitor can also visit the cheese cellar and the old granary, where there is for instance a collection of museum tools.

ST. MICHaeL’S CHUrCHThe granite church of Pernaja is the pearl of the area and the oldest building in Loviisa. The medieval St. Michael’s Church is representative of the common building style used in Finland and Sweden in the 13th–15th centuries. The church is considered a medieval architectural treasure. It is home to many old objects, such as the family coat of arms of noble families. The beautiful glasspaintings give the church a unique atmosphere.

The luminous wooden church in Ruotsinpyhtää boasts the only altarpiece painted by Helene Schjerfbeck. In 2012 it will be 150 years since the artist was born. The church belongs to the network of road churches and it is open at 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on June 10th–August 12th and on August 18th–19th and 25th–26th, Ruukintie 11 C, Ruotsinpyhtää.
The oldest building in Loviisa and the oldest church of the area, medieval St. Michael’s Church in Pernaja is considered a church historical treasure. The wooden church in ruotsinpyhtää is home to the altarpiece entitled “Resurrection”, painted by Helene Schjerfbeck in 1898. The art work is the only altarpiece ever done by the artist. The church is open daily in summer. The church in Liljendal boasts a singular bell tower.
The father of the Finnish written language, Mikael agricola (1510–1557), was born in Pernaja. Pernaja church is named after the archangel Michael. Agricola in turn was named Mikael after the name of his home church. Agricola lived in a rich peasant house, which was one of the five taxed freeholds of the village. He got his surname Agricola (“farmer”) at the Latin school in Vyborg because of his father’s occupation. The vicar of the local parish persuaded Mikael’s parents to send him there.
Many famous people have lived and worked in the Loviisa area. These include composers, writers, artists, architects and nobles, such as Jean Sibelius, Runar Schildt, Nils Schillmark, Verner Weckman, Ragnar Nordström, Georg Chiewitz, Augustin Ehren-svärd, Berndt Lindholm, C. G. Armfelt, Helene Schjerfbeck, Gustaf Philip Creutz and Lorentz Creutz.

Loviisa is a green town with exuberant gardens hidden behind the fences in the historical wooden house quarters. The tour takes you to private gardens, such as a rose garden, a historical clematis garden and a lush villa garden. In addition, you get to see the fortress gardens, such as the Commandant’s Garden and the area of Bastion Rosen and Bastion Ungern. russian LoviisaThe tour starts with a guided walking tour, which covers the influence that the Russian Terechoff family had on Loviisa and a visit to the Orthodox church and cemetery. After this, the tour continues to Ehrensvärd’s nature trail. Approx. 1.2 km long, this is an easy trail in the Garnison area. The festival founded in 1988 brings the best foreign and Finnish bluegrass bands to town, who together with history aficionados recreate the life of the European immigrants who took this music to America. The Strömfors Iron Works is for the 25th time the perfect setting for the festival.
The European immigrants took their
folk music to America where it developed into “bluegrass” influenced by blues, gospel as well as other influences. The journey into the roots of bluegrass just feels right in the original buildings of the 18th and 19th century iron works. The historical atmosphere is ideal and you won’t need a lot of imagination to envision the people
from northern Europe who decided to travel overseas.

MUSICAL REJOICING AT LURENSThe spry Swedish-speaking summer theatre of Lurens has operated on the grounds of Lurens Manor since 1958. The theatre is maintained by Östra Nylands Ungdomsförbund (ÖNUF), and it plays for full audiences every summer. The audience is able to follow the plays from a rotating auditorium. The King Comes to Loviisa on June 30th–July 1st 2012
The Liljendal Days are celebrated in Sävträsk on June 15th–17th. The event brings together both the young and the old. The programme consists of a traditional market and in the evening a dance in a rural setting. You can get acquainted with domestic animals, locally produced goods and the work methods of the olden days. There is also music and programme for children. RUUKKI PICNIC July 7th LILJEVISAN IN LOVIISA The event Liljevisan (Lily Songs), which last year became hugely popular, takes place at the pavilion of Liljendalgården in Sävträsk, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28th and at the Loviisa Laivasilta pavilion at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 29th. The Liljendal Days
Queen Lovisa Ulrika, after whom the city was named, can be seen in Loviisa in the summer of 2012. King Adolf Fredrik arrives on Sunday, July 1st at Bastion Ungern, where the music-rich play “Queen Lovisa Ulrika’s Outing” is performed in Finnish to entertain him. In addition to the Queen, the pastoral play also features courtier and poet Gustaf Philip Creutz, who hailed from Malmgård in Pernaja. The public can join in at the outing after the play.
The newly crowned King Adolf Fredrik visited the eastern parts of the realm in June 1752, at which time he inspected the fortification construction in Svartholma and Degerby. During this visit the King gave Degerby the new name Loviisa after Queen Lovisa Ulrika. In reality the Queen never visited her namesake town.
The 18th century weekend kicks off on Saturday June 30th with a handicrafts market at Aleksanterinpiha. The Good Citizens of Loviisa arrange the event, which now takes place for the 15th time. The association is made up by a group of aficionados of 18th century history and customs.

Loviisa will be charmed by the lovely roses in all their possible forms on July 6th–8th. In addition to the gardens of Loviisa, the roses are found in poetry, music and art. Apart from rose exhibitions by individual artists, professors from the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg will give courses on pastel painting of roses. Master painter Airi Kallio introduces the public to the secrets of decorative painting and rose tea in the famous building Kappeli, which currently is undergoing renovation.
Roses and chocolate meet on Jaakko Halmetoja’s courses on crude chocolate. The courses are given at Restaurant Degerby Gille, in a building built in the 17th century. Other flowers and herbs are also present on the menu of the restaurant. However, roses can be found in the beverages and delicacies offered by other cafés and restaurants in Loviisa. The Rose Dance takes place at Laivasilta on Saturday, July 7th.
Expert lectures teach us of the history and cultivation of roses and the scent of roses charm us at the popular rose soap courses. The local shops offer the rose theme in delicacies, utensils, fabrics, wall paper and ornamental objects. The children have not been forgotten either – they can see the real Sleeping Beauty, Briar Rose, in a fairy tale park adorned by children.
This year the theme of the rose event is “The Rose – The Flower of Love”. In honour of this everyone is invited to a genuine rose wedding in the recently renovated Loviisa church. The first wedding fair of the Wedding City of Loviisa is also arranged in connection with the weekend. All the lovely wedding churches in the city are presented during the fair. SMALL SHIPS’ RACE July 21st–22nd
The Small Ships’ Race is a sailing race for classic wooden boats. People arrive from afar to admire the stars of the race, the traditional Baltic Sea workboats. Conveniently for the spectators, the race takes place on the Bay of Loviisa. The boat festival lasts for the weekend and includes plenty of other activities - from a children’s playground to night dances and the Miss Loviisa contest. The sailing contests and the parallel events can be seen on a big screen.

Loviisa Peace Forum celebrates its 25th anniversary on August 4th–6th 2012. There is music, peace pancakes and information on the activities of the peace organizations on Loviisa Market Square at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 4th. The event continues with peace seminars. The power of singing is enormous. People sing for freedom, out of despair, for better or for worse, to praise and to protest, to celebrate or to lament – but above all, to be happy.
The renowned Loviisa Singing Festival started in 1899 and it has attracted both choirs and people who enjoy collective singing at the historic fortresses in Loviisa. During its peak year, 1971, nearly 8,000 music lovers gathered at Bastion Ungern.
The international and multilingual choir event will again take place at Bastion Ungern on Sunday, August 5th.

In his youth, the composer Jean Sibelius spent several summers in Loviisa. The sun, the sea, summer and light filled him with impressions that were to inspire him for the rest of his life. This is also the frame in which international artists – and the festival audience – interpret Sibelius. The Loviisa Sibelius Festival is characterised by its warm, youthful atmosphere. Over the years, this traditional festival has brought a number of stars to the town under the management of artistic director Jan-Erik Gustafsson.
