FOR FRIENDS OF ST. VINCENT MEALS ON WHEELS
FALL 2018 I VOLUME 33, NUMBER 3
Continued on page 4
CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Friends and Faith Keep John Going at 96 John Angelo is a former
dancer, choreographer, actor, and set and costume designer who appeared in many classic MGM musicals.
A St. Vincent Meals on Wheels client since 2017, John still lives alone in his West Hollywood apartment at 96.
“I feel wonderful,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. “I had a bad fall, so now I have to stay home and use a walker. But I have friends who check on me, buy me groceries and take me out for Italian or Chinese food once in a while.”
Born in New Jersey, John started dancing as a
teenager and performed on Broadway—most notably in the first production of “Oklahoma!”—as well as in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
In 1952, John moved to West Hollywood after being recruited by MGM as a dancer and acting extra.

INSIDE: An Evening on the Beach, page 5
It’s always a good time to volunteer at St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, but it’s especially inspiring over the holidays.
The smiles and hugs of gratitude you get while delivering delicious, nutritionally balanced meals to homebound seniors will be the best gifts you get all season!
We have many shifts in need of volunteer drivers and meal runners, including weekends and holidays.
You can volunteer once a week, or once a month, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And you’re welcome to a hot lunch afterwards.
If your company is looking to do something special for the holidays, consider a team-building volunteer day. We also welcome students seeking community service hours.
I hope to see you at the kitchen or at one of our exciting holiday events very soon! Thank you for being part of the family, and for making sure no L.A. senior goes hungry this holiday season.
Happy holidays!
— Betsy Rosenfeld Vargas

and social activist Martin Sheen recently visited our staff after making a promotional video for Finding Vince 400, a film competition and festival
inspired by the 400th anniversary of the birth of St. Vincent de Paul’s charism of service to the poor.
Finding Vince 400 champions 21st-century storytellers and challenges

SMART GIVING
Over 70-1/2 with an IRA? Here’s How to Save Money Under the New Tax Law!
If you’re over the age of 70-1/2 and have an IRA, here’s a great way to take advantage of the new tax law’s savings without the pain.
You can have your IRA custodian make a direct donation from your IRA to St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. If your gift is equal to or more than the money you are required to take (required minimum distribution or RMD), you will pay NO taxes on your 2018 IRA income since it went directly to charity.
These Qualified Charitable Distributions or QCDs can total up to $100,000 per year. Also, as long as your gift transfer is equal to or more than the required minimum distribution (RMD), you are not required to take any income out of the IRA.
The bottom line is that if you do not itemize deductions on your 1040 personal income tax return, you’ll come out ahead making charitable gifts this way. There are no taxes on that income.
If you do itemize, this gift is not deductible but you will still probably be better off. Taking withdrawals from your traditional IRA, paying income taxes, and then making a gift to charity is not the same as the direct distribution using a QCD.
Your required minimum distribution (RMD) is generally fully taxable income. Receiving it makes your tax bracket increase and your income is taxed at a higher level.
Using the QCD to eliminate your RMD is a smart tax strategy that may save you a significant amount of tax. Talk it over with your advisors!
For information on making a 2018 qualified charitable distribution to Meals on Wheels, and saving your tax dollars, please contact
Daryl Twerdahl at (213) 484-7112 or [email protected].
His film appearances included “Singin’ in the Rain,” “West Side Story,” “An American in Paris,” and “Guys and Dolls.”
On television in the late 1950s, he was a regular dancer on “The Frank Sinatra Show.” John went on to perform in Southern California theater, and was also a choreographer in Las Vegas, where he appeared with the Rat Pack.
After retiring from dancing, John worked as a set designer for television shows including “Dallas” and “Knots Landing.”
Thanks to your loyal support, the holidays have already begun in our kitchen!
We’re planning delicious holiday meals with added touches to make clients feel special. Our volunteers are creating holiday gift bags for clients with donated items like socks, soap, and hand lotion.
And you’re a part of all the holiday joy too, because you help make it happen!
At the national Meals on Wheels America conference in August, I had the honor of helping to present their inaugural Sister Alice Marie Quinn Award to a leader who embodies SAM’s passion and dedication to seniors.
Jayne C. McQueen, President and CEO of Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, South Carolina, received the well-deserved award.
For more than 41 years, Jayne has committed herself to serving the most vulnerable seniors of Spartanburg County with her heart and soul, just as our SAM did for seniors here in L.A. Mobile Meals of Spartanburg began in 1977 and now delivers 1,100 meals each day on 120 routes throughout Spartanburg County with the help of more than 130 committed volunteers.
We honor Jayne, who was also a personal friend of SAM, for her visionary leadership and effectiveness, and her contributions to our Meals on Wheels movement nationwide.
But let’s come back to our own kitchen, as SAM would want us to do. So much goodness goes on here every day that wouldn’t be possible without your loyal support. This Thanksgiving season, I am thankful for you!
Happy holidays to you and your loved ones!
— Daryl Twerdahl Interim Executive Director

John Keeps Going...Continued from page 1
Starting in the 1960s, John produced theater and dance workshops through his Adult, Teen, and Children’s Theatre Arts Workshop. He produced community theater projects for the County of Los Angeles and the City of West Hollywood. He also hosted an interview show on public access TV.
In recognition of his contributions to his community, West Hollywood proclaimed John Angelo Day on his June 24 birthday in 2012.
“My friends, my faith and healthy food keep me going,” he said.
When asked about his philosophy of life, John called upon his Bahá’í faith. “Live as if all people in the world are one, because we are. The things that divide us are an illusion. The world would be a better place if we all did that.”
From left: Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of MOWA, Dan Pruett, board chair of MOWA, awardee Jayne McQueen, and Daryl Twerdahl.

More than 600 generous foodies and wine-lovers attended An Evening on the Beach, hosted by Audi. The September event at the Jonathan Beach Club featured renowned L.A. chefs preparing dishes, and noted vintners and spirit makers sharing their wines and signature cocktails.
The event benefitting St. Vincent Meals on Wheels raised over $150,000—enough to deliver more than 19,000 meals to shut-in L.A. seniors. Our deepest thanks to our chef partners, vintners, spirit makers, sponsors and guests.

Do a good deed every day for the one hungry senior who needs you most—it’s just $1.
Nancy, a 70-year-old retired L.A. teacher, suffers from cardiac heart failure. Unable to shop or cook for herself, she was isolated, frail, and down to 73 pounds.
Thanks to friends like you, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels’ Breakfast Club delivers breakfast—in addition to our hot midday meal—to clients like Nancy who depend on us for everything they eat.
Nancy’s meal delivery runner Maria—who is also our Client Advocate—added breakfast to her delivery, along with Ensure nutrition drinks to help her gain strength.
Now Nancy starts her day with breakfast from our menu of cereal, oatmeal, fresh fruit, yogurt, muffins, milk, and coffee or tea. She gets an extra boost from the Ensure.
Today Nancy feels stronger and is gaining weight. She said, “I am so blessed to have angels like you watching over me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
For just $1 a day you can create everyday miracles for L.A.’s hungriest seniors.
We invite you to join the Breakfast Club. Your $30 monthly Breakfast Club contribution—or a one-time gift of $365—will provide a year of nourishing breakfasts for the senior who needs you most.
A simple breakfast can change a life. Won’t you please do a good deed every day?
To join the Breakfast Club, please call Daryl Twerdahl at (213) 484-7327 or go to stvincentmow.org/breakfast
